The plan called to have Canvass sniff you over as you left the city, to make sure no trackers were on you. She smelled something weird on you that freaked her out, but it was faint. Probably a secondary contact, she thought. (i.e. it got on someone else, you interacted with that person enough to get some of it on you.)
As per the request on Discord pinging @Paperclipped and @Velorien

Was the bad smell on just Hazou? Or was it on all three of Kei/Kagome/Hazou

I'd expect the first case if the source was Orochimaru or maybe Ino? And the second case if someone on the Goketsu estate was the source of the smell.

Also did Canvass have any details on how it smelled? Objects of comparison etc.

Also please tell me we scrubbed like crazy to get it off.

Suddenly very alarmed.

Okay so like, this is the kind of thing that we're going to forget about for 100 chapters if we don't address it right now. Honestly, I say we start work on a seal or rune that utterly erases all scent within its radius, so no matter how subtle the tracker we can always cleanse ourselves of it.

Right? I was not expecting this. We should have had her sniff everyone in the estate before we left. Just as a precaution. We haven't been using this asset appropriately

Naruto's plant gift from noodle?

Edit: The logic being not that the plant itself left the scent, but that the plant was a trojan horse carrying in something else, which went to Naruto. Only trace amounts were left by the time the plant was creeping on Hazo

That would be direct contact.

Best guess is either toad stuff via Noburi, or (hopefully just flower/perfume/poison) stuff Ino handled. But it makes me nervous. Was the scent equally on all three of the PCs?

If it's on all three equally, AND Canvass can rule out toad-smells, that make me suspect Mari as the shared vector. If so we should warn her about possible poison/drugs, and recommend she hire Inuzaka to investigate.

Word Count: 299
  • Sealing Research - on the Seventh Path, return for infusions
  • Cannai
    • Inform him about our changing circumstances, Naruto has ordered us to build Akatsuki-killing weapons.
    • The Toad Sages have agreed to teach us Technique Hacking. So we'll be primarily in Toad for a while.
    • Ask him about the natural philosophy of chakra.
      • What does he think chakra is ontologically?
      • What are the differences between human and nature chakra?
      • How about the Elements inherent to both? Why are they so different?
    • Share what we learned from Orochimaru, does it match his experience as a Clan Boss?
    • Has he ever heard of a human able to filter nature chakra and live?
      • Jiraiya warned us of its lethality at the Chunin Exams. The Toad Sages have let slip that nature chakra turns humans to rock?
      • Yet apparently the Toad Sages can teach a human how to successfully filter nature chakra, and even combine it with human chakra.
      • Do the Dogs have any knowledge of this?
    • Does he know of anything able to affect how much potential energy is in chakra? Analogize to a ball on a hill.
      • It seems possible to set up dampening filed where human chakra is useless, but our Summons could fight unimpeded.
  • Misc.
    • Begin studying TH with the TS
    • Ask Noburi to get something that smells of Jūchi Yosamu and/or Fifi (safely)

my edit was too slow but basically more like a bug that was hidden in the plant rather than the plant itself. Bug leaves scent on plant which touches hazo, indirect. Of course Naruto had some sort of security check on the plant directly before letting it creep onto clan heads in casual meetings, but something using the plant as a diversion might have snuck through.

It's an oddity we actually had a chance to observe happening in the text, which makes it a possible clue to something happening on screen we could catch instead of off-screen shenanigans.

Do prep days on the following seals/runes if there's additional time on some tracks
  • Storage Seal Modifying Rune
  • Force Claws (only after completing Force Walls)
  • Chakra Mapping Rune
  • Chakra Filtering Rune
Our second task on the third track here should really be CATEARS.
Applying defuffs on turn zero(before he gets attacked) will be huge for Hazou's survivability and combat, and it's a fairly easy seal. And it boosts the whole team.

Misc.
  • Continue studying TH with the TS
  • Ask Kei to come up with a plan for introducing the gold to Leaf's economy
    • Should we revalue the currency? How can we benefit the economy overall
  • Ask Mari to go quietly buying up mines (iron, silver, copper, tin etc.) with the wealth from the gold mine
    • Prioritize iron mines if you can but secrecy is more important
"Make a plan to reconcile with Hinata after the gemstone thing, and a plan to destroy the Hyuga's infuance. Run both by us via Noburi."

Editb
tell Mari what Canvass knows about the weird scent. Recommend hiring a Inuzaka to help you investigate.

I don't agree that it's higher priority than a seal we have almost already researched

After we finish Force Walls, sure.

EDIT: are you suggesting that we have time on the third track to research CATEARS? I assure you we don't.

Force Walls will take 7 days, out of 9 in the research portion of the cycle. Unless you want to do a single prep day on CATEARS (this is suicide) we don't have the time.

Have we done a prep day on EM Nuke Runes? Because if we haven't we should (albeit quietly, so that nobody knows we did it).

Yeah "second task on track three" meant "right after force walls"

Edited in a bit about the scent also, give it abother look.

Probably a good idea, I was hoping that we'd finish Jiraiya's Cooling seals first. Next cycle okay (as we can likely have them finished by then) or do we need to do it this cycle?

So, it's time to research. I'm fully in favor of finishing the seals we've already made progress researching, but after that we really need a research program that will eventually result in an essie-killing weapon. I've heard some candidates already—@Twinnstars' sekiyuu, IIRC @Inferno Vulpix had a plan to convince Hazō to investigate the EM spectrum with light shift seals (which would allow us to eventually produce gamma rays), and I had an idea for accelerator seals (that accelerate objects moving past them) that can be chained together to form a railgun. What else have we got?

EM Nuke Runes

EDIT: Also some of the more esoteric time stuff, a Time Stop Rune would effectively kill them. Also would be a viable anti-Oro weapon

Oh, and if we deploy EM nuke runes, we definitely need to make sure people don't figure out the same effect is achievable with a jutsu. So what's the cover story? I guess we could claim the first EM nuke was a sealing failure and then we used runes to recreate it, but you definitely can't do that without runes pinkie promise. But IIRC people generally aren't able to use sealing to recreate sealing failures, so I don't know if that story would hold up. We could ask Kei what she thinks, I guess.

Cool, I think I gotchu.

I noticed that you were spending spare research days on thinks like "prep for force claws" and thought that CATEARS was significantly more important to rush.
I probably misunderstood where the extra days are coming from, and might still be confused, but as long as you say you aren't deprioritizing CATEARS for a different new non-SSA seal, it's all good.

Hoping you edit to give Mari an FYI about the weird scent.

If we succeed in creating EM Nuke Runes, we don't need to worry about a cover story.

CATEARS already has a prep day on it. It's definitely the next seal I want to do on a non-SSA track. Modulo the possibility of doing Oro's stealth seals, but I hope to give them to Kagome after he finishes helping us with RRBs

@Sir Stompy your plan should probably specify if we're doing as much of the research as possible on the Seventh Path and only returning to the Human Path for infusions, or if we're staying on the Human Path.

Mess with inertia/mass.

In particular, there's merit in accelerating a small projectile to extremely high speed (presuming small stuff easier to accelerate) and then unsealing as much mass as possible via a storage seal that sacrifices anything else in favor of more single use mass or a bunch of storage seals that all activate. This effectively amplifies the energy delivered downrange by the ratio of original mass to unsealed mass (and a spear like projectile can potentially fit a lot of quarter sized storage seals).

There's also the inertia modifying seal. If it truly messes with inertia, you might be able to hyper accelerate projectiles with it (amplify inertia, apply lots of force over a short distance, remove inertia amplification, resulting in a amplification factor+ increase in speed). If that works, combos well with storage seal based mass amplification.

Likewise, rune based accelerator or impulse seal+ either of those would be devastating.

In ideal form:
Rune based accelerator pushes really hard on time inertia sealed object. Inertia returns to normal, super speed, unseal stuff.

Everything downrange dies from big cloud of hyper velocity projectiles. For reference, a claymore mine only has 680 g of projectile. So a few tons at that speed is a LOT.
