There's not really anything we can do for Star right now. She crit succeeded in going into hiding thanks to us, which means it will take two or three turns for someone looking for her to find her. For now, we focus on shoring up our defenses and making sure we're actually in a state to help Star rather than just flail around trying to find her.Cannot disagree more. Demona is actively searching for Star, in the name of Toffee. Every turn we don't attempt in some way to find Star is giving Demona a turn's worth of head start. While I'd say we have better odds of finding Star than Demona does, consider: once Toffee has Star, Star is dead. Full stop.
We have defenses that need shoring up, it's true. But we have a valuable agent in danger, out in the field - that has to take priority.
Defenses I think could use shoring up:Actually, people keep bringing up "shoring up defenses," and thinking it over, uh ...
...what defenses are those, again? Like, alright, there's the digital front, certainly. But other than that ... where are we particularly weak? Who do we think is going to be assaulting us? What crisis are we facing that needs immediate attention? Like, I don't want to misrepresent reality or ask loaded questions, but literally the only non-computational crisis I can think of is ... Finding Star Before Demona Does.
Also, shoring up our defenses is certain to take the form of Martial Actions, Occult Actions, Learning and Stewardship Actions. I'm not going to say that Intrigue Actions can't be used to defend ourselves, but it ... feels? ... like we're going to have enough wiggle room to toss some action economy that direction.
Don't forget Mr. Doom. (And possibly Negaduck/Drug Ring/MCR/Zootopia eventually?)Defenses I think could use shoring up:
3. Intrigue defenses. We initially had a very strong start here, and have done little to improve it and have actually lost a significant portion of our defenses; our only improvement was in crushing crime critting, iirc.
...
3 is only a concern because of the Phantom Blot, at least in the short term, although we'd like to improve it generally.
In the short term, I don't see doom being an issue. He's failed seriously before in his attempts to use intrigue on us and has lost his spymaster. He's an intrigue threat in the medium term, sure, but that's less urgent than blot (and he's also objectively less capable than blot).Don't forget Mr. Doom. (And possibly Negaduck/Drug Ring/MCR/Zootopia eventually?)
You are right. I was just worried about Doom pulling the public against us. I forgot we are on good terms with that many people.Socially? Well, that's just not true. Doof's great at social.
We're on extremely good terms with Xanatos, pretty okay terms with Shego, we have a working relationship with the Zaibatsu, and we've got contacts both magical and mundane, in pretty far-flung corners of the world. We've made diplomatic overtures to Hell and to Mongolia, we've managed to get the US Government to have a positive opinion of us despite seceding, barring unfortunate trips to Drusselstein all our Hero Units find us agreeable and pleasant to work for, and people who talk to Heinz Doofenschmirtz find themselves, well liking the guy, despite everything.
I concede that we likely need Intrigue defenses, however. Luckily for both our positions, any information network that would work well as an Intrigue-based defense would also serve us well in searching for Star. Win-win!
Well, I'd argue we have two immensely important Intrigue actions, next turn. We need to investigate the murder of Hawk, and we need to investigate our employees. Both of those are rather high DC, to the point of needing Personal Attention on one, IMO. So, yeah, in the short term intrigue is rough. But certainly, after this turn, we can put some attention on that.Socially? Well, that's just not true. Doof's great at social.

I am worried about investigating employees though. After all, we just had Alan break our firewall intentionally, which, while for a good purpose, Kind of was acting against us.Well, I'd argue we have two immensely important Intrigue actions, next turn. Those are pretty significant benefits that we don't have an equivalent of for Toffee. "Let other people handle it" is a perfectly viable strategy for alien invasions, Kat aside. Our only specific benefits are being under the Galfed Aegis, the US / NATO Aegis and our lazer cannons.
He's the mayor of LA. Not enough people care what he has to say for him to turn the public against us. He spent two turns a bit ago setting up a PR attack on us and nothing happened. It may be in character to act like we're one attack ad away from angry mobs burning down our headquarters, but that's only because Doof has cripplingly low self-esteem.You are right. I was just worried about Doom pulling the public against us. I forgot we are on good terms with that many people.
Furthermore, I can't really think of anyone in space who's anywhere near as bad for Earth, in particular, compared to Toffee. Mitch is a possibility, but he doesn't seem like much of a conqueror. Meanwhile, GalFed might come after us for Jumba, but that'll take a long while. Lastly, Kat's species is a problem, but is best mitigated on the home front, not by working on space. Those are pretty significant benefits that we don't have an equivalent of for Toffee. We didn't, noHey, did we ever find out the results of what happened when we said "Press Y"? I mean, I assume that's what the vote decided. Still, did we ever see the result of that?
I think we need to start putting them on projects with a high chance of failure, or even critical failure, and hope for the best from there.Looking at things a pressing issue in my opinion is to decide what to do with L.O.V.E.M.U.F.F.I.N.
They reached the point with loyalty that it wouldn't surprise me if they are a bad random event away from leaving, the main cause of that is the Feels Unimportant+Stop Sidelining Us! status together, while those are there any attempt to raise their loyalty is just putting band-aids on a cut limb.
The main problem with that is that they are ... not good enough to deal with a truly important task and most heroes that interact with them end up disliking them. Basically it would be finding something big enough to be worth it and probably someone to babysit them (and even then I don't know if they would have to do the task solo to be able to remove or reduce the 2 main status).
For what I have seen we seem to be using L.O.V.E.M.U.F.F.I.N. mostly as a generic learning hero when we don't have or need someone specialized (probably because their stats are just not there). In learning, their main stat, half of our heroes are better and they have on top a negative trait that increases critical failure chance.
It seems at the end that we have 2 options:
- Really make an effort to remove the 2 negatives by putting them on something important and sciency (and no half measures). OR
- Wash our hands from them, continue to just use them on menial stuff and accept the expected betrayal later on
Losing a hero wouldn't feel great but we also have to decide when trying to patch a sinking ship is too much effort especially if the ship in question didn't even float that well to begin with.
"You can't trade us like gimmicky trading cards!"we can negotiate a hero exchange with another king and trade LOVERMURFIN for anything else. (In the series there was an exchange with a guy from Canada, even though he was from Greenland)
Would a doppelganger of Doof understanding enough of his mind to make extra actions for him?
