e: Also, this is my notice that I'm publicly precomitting to do work on the team-social portion of the plan later tonight.
e2: It occured to me while working on the team social portion that going behind Minami's back to address team cohesion could be taken as suborning her authority, in itself. Do any of you have thoughts on that?

I would let Minami take point on this entire mission. Have her decide who goes to meet the contact. Also would try to to find out about how she got promoted.
I don't think asking Akane to explain how the team social dynamic works in front of Minami is suborning her authority. Akane can explain it far more diplomatically than the socially inept Hazō can and in ways that Minami can understand.

Depending on who/where the contact is, others might be more suitable. I'd rather decide this on case by case basis, or let Minami pick.

I don't like much the talk to Keiko part, but I also don't have much in terms of feedback. I think she expressed her views sufficiently with eyebrow thing, and it's not like she's been overly concerned with morality before.
Overall, I don't think she's the right person to have this talk with. Maybe Akane?

Hazō knows nothing about the state of chocolate-making in the Elemental Nations. It is an elite food for rich people, and given his upbringing, it's miraculous enough that he's been able to eat chocolate at all. The chocolate he's eaten did not have any features distinguishing enough to tell him (with his basic cooking skills) how it was made.

A Comment on Birthdays
I think Hazou (and by the extension the thread) is getting a little dysfunctional about this birthday stuff. Birthdays should not cause scrambling and distress. They should not turn into obligations where the perfect gift must be found. I know posters in this thread come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, but I personally don't generally give friends/family birthday gifts as an adult. Instead I make sure to let them know I'm thinking of them, and that's enough. In game if there's a team tradition of birthday gifts now, that's fine, but don't let it become a cause of stress. If nothing good comes to mind, it's cool to shrug shoulders and say, "Nothing good came to mind."
Hazou (with Kagome's assistance) got a gift for Akane because he likes her and wants to make her happy. There's no need to wait for some arbitrary deadline to give his girlfriend a gift. Muer'ci says "This is way to expensive for a casual gift." Birthday gifts are casual gifts! If it's a non-casual gift then it's because it's Akane, not because it's her birthday.

Cultural differences aside, effort of giving thoughtful gifts returned to us as great scenes of character interaction. Can you imagine if, back in Tea, instead of crafting a medallion for Mari the team went "Happy Birthday, many happy returns, what's for breakfast?"
Personally, I don't find "scrambling" for a good gift idea more stressing than what happens during our more daring plans, and it's not like every gift has been some incredible feat of crafting. We gave Noburi an IOU after all.
Jewelry is only a casual gift if both you and the recipient are rich enough to buy things like that on 'whenever fancy strikes' basis. Clearly not the case here.
We can't wave off the money concerns because we didn't buy it with our own money. And CCnJ or not, presenting something clearly expensive as casual gift and going "no strings attached" will only make the other person uneasy.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm all about giving Akane casual gifts just to make her happy. I'd have been content to pick up a hair ribbon, or maybe something like a wooden comb, nothing fancy, to give her immediately.
In fact, we might still do that. I think i'd like that.
But if you wouldn't randomly gift someone an engagement ring just because, don't give bejeweled pin to Akane.
That's my cultural opinion.
