[x] Action Plan: Puppies, Power, and the Power of Puppies
Word Count: tbd
  • Cannai
    • How're the Dogs doing? Need assistance? Should be fully healed in a few weeks.
    • We've mulled over Cannai's poem, and have some questions.
      • The poem claims the Sage went 'beyond the trees' to rest, and that 'truth or death' could lead to him.
        • Did he go to the Naraka Path? We might've seen those trees once...
      • Sage also left 'seven rocks with seven locks' and the Great Seal is, basically, a giant lock made of rock. There's seven paths... are there six more Great Seals somewhere?
        • What does Cannai know of the other Paths?
      • Who are the Lost Ones? Does this refer to the Sage's Five companions Cannai mentioned or someone else?
        • Is Jashin a Lost One? Has Cannai heard of Jashin before? His cult's symbol is a circle with a triangle inside.
      • Trees made of Iron or Stone? Are those supposed to be buildings? Why is their shade dangerous? Is it because the Lost Ones reside in them?
    • Pantsā told Kei that the denizens of the Seventh Path absorb 'nature chakra' from it, which is why stronger denizens are harder to Summon. Jiraiya later told us draining a Summon could be dangerous. Is nature chakra toxic to humans or something? Would Hazou get sick from staying here too long? Mareo seems to have managed it.
    • Jiraiya said that Nature Chakra is dangerous for humans, but not for denizens of 7th Path. Y'all can use your non-human-standard elements just fine on the Human Path (which doesn't have nature chakra). Can Humans use Nature Chakra?
  • (Offscreen)
    • Hidan:
      • Request Jashin's holy symbol back (Hidan might return)
      • Start carrying stored peppermint tea (delay tactic)
    • Review information gathered from the Rock facility.
    • Kagome: please review Summoning notes
    • Shikamaru:
      • We have Earthshaping. We could help with any Collapse mapping/extraction/recovery.
      • We could use of earthshaping to map out underground areas, stabilize unstable areas, and shape them to be more navigable.
      • Kei said that important things (disguise kits, Earth country intel, etc) were lost in the collapse. Maybe we could recover some of it for the Tower, for the war effort?
    • 7th Path
      • spider wife: we know how human path chakra interacts with seals, but we're less sure on nature chakra. Minor seals have been fine, but when stabilizing something like the Great Seal, "fine" isn't enough... do you have any way of sensing/interacting with Nature Chakra?
      • Ask Hornets if they have a Summon Scroll.
      • Check if Hornets/Arachnids can operate seals.
      • Inform Asuma about the Bear Summoner's situation.

Jiraiya said that Nature Chakra is dangerous for humans, but not for denizens of 7th Path. Y'all can use your non-human-standard elements just fine on the Human Path (which doesn't have nature chakra). Can Humans use Nature Chakra?
I would change this to "Jiraiya said that Nature Chakra is dangerous for humans, but not for denizens of 7th Path. Y'all can use your non-human-standard elements just fine on the Human Path, does that mean the Human Path has Nature Chakra too? Can Humans use Nature Chakra? If they haven't tried, how would Jiraiya be so sure it was dangerous?" Or something to that effect, I think the fact that Summons can use their stuff on the Human Path is weak evidence that nature chakra occurs there too.
We could combo HLaM with Earthshaping? It'd be a medium-long term project anyway, but the prospect of recovering valuable lost intel would be worth the impracticality/inefficiency.
It's been months, those documents probably aren't legible anymore. Not to mention that ES's range is small enough, and the jutsu is slow enough, that shifting through all the wreckage that way would take years. Maybe not for just the Nara estate, but they probably don't want us up in their business anyway. Ninja be like that

I suspect this could also be done with Hiding Like a Mole (albeit, much less skillfully, since HLaM only allows the caster to move through Earth, rather than the Earth around the caster).

That said, it's a worthwhile notion and it'd potentially give Shikamaru more screentime. I'll add it, just give me a few minutes before you refresh the page--
Oh wow. Did'nt expect you to include in this vote but maybe the next one.

And I was thinking of using it not as an alternative to HLAM, but a supplment to it.

I was thinking that some of that there woukd be underground rubble that would block off or make some areas difficult to reach. Explosives to bust through might be unpalatable if it endangers integrity of the rubble making up the underground structures.

Imo earthshaper is extremely unoptimized for archeology

Like is Hazou gonna turn all of leaf into a puddle of playdough and move it around? That sounds extremely impractical and his range is like 16 feet
The intent wasn't really to try and outdo HlaM but to assist it. My reasons for proposing earthshaping were mostly to do with it's ability to infuse chakra could be taken advantage of to map out 3-d replicas to assist anyone who has HLaM.
That Hazo might be able to join seperate materials to strengthen dangerous tunnels or shafts is a bonus.

Chapter 477: Puppy Therapy
I am a bit confused on what everyone's been voting on since we are apparently going with the old plan anyway.
Also, yay puppies! EJ, did you watch the 30-sec clip of the man getting swarmed with them?
"Good morning, Hazō. Is there an imminent threat or would you like tea?"
I love the implication here that, if Hazō is bringing him another world ending threat right now, Shikamaru is going to withhold tea from him.
Shikamaru nodded in appreciation of the efficiently-worded reply and poured the tea, offering Hazō the choice of which cup. Hazō took the one on the left and sat down in the chair that Shikamaru nodded him towards. The two teenage Clan Heads raised their mugs to one another in silent toast and sipped.
Tea surrounded itself with a complex etiquette in every social group; the etiquette varied from group to group, but it was always intricate and full of secondary meaning. Among ninja, being granted the opportunity to drink tea with someone was a gesture of (at least minimal) trust: I am willing to have my hands occupied in your presence. Of course, that could be reversed if the person physically handed you a cup of tea; that was a power move: I am your superior and can compel you into danger. Offering the choice of tea where one cup was closer to the recipient than the other was a question: Take the one closest to the offerer (I trust you enough to have my hands occupied around you, but will still take the one less likely to be poisoned) or the one closest to the recipient, which came with its own gradations of meaning depending on body language and the amount of time that passed between offer and acceptance—anything from I reluctantly submit to your will all the way up to I trust you implicitly.
I love how Shikamaru just skipped all this byplay by having both cups be equidistant from both of them. Too troublesome for him.
"Shikapama will be pleased. She carved it to your measurements."
When I was a high school student, I used to take music lessons every Saturday morning. Afterwards, I would always go to this deli right next to the music store and order a "Reuben on a plain bagel," which to this day is the best sandwich I have ever tasted.

One day, one of the workers didn't ask me for my order and just said "The Usual?"

It was an interesting moment for me. On the one hand, it was both heatwarming that they remembered my exact order and also a little amusing that it had taken them over a year to get to this point. One the other, it meant that they knew me well enough that we could skip our weekly script.

I imagine Hazō feels like that, but instead of Shikamaru responding to his food habbits, he's responding to the fact that Hazō consistently brings him end-of-the-world scenarios. Very amusing to me as an outsider, probably less so to Hazō. Also, quite sad in what it implies.

I wonder if the chair comes at the cost of Shikamaru always asking "Is there an imminent end-of-the-world threat xor would you like some tea?"
"I can't tell you how much I appreciated what you did yesterday, Shikamaru. Your political acuity is the only reason we're all here right now, and you showed guts for days doing it."

Both eyebrows went up. "Thank you, Hazō, although I fail to understand why my actions are worthy of praise. They were merely—"
I really am starting to ship Kei x Shikamaru, which is an odd thing to do becuase they're already married and also not actually together(maybe?). Gah, gives me a headache. Whatever, I look forward to Hazō babysitting their going-to-be-absolutely-adorable-and-full-of-the-best-dialogue toddler years down the line.
"They are squirmy slobber machines that have an unpleasant habit of nipping."

Hazō laughed. "I see. Bad childhood experience?"

"My third birthday. I note that I am uncertain whether I most dispreferred being bitten in the face or having my birthday cake splattered everywhere."
Hahahahahahaha
Shikamaru's face spasmed in revulsion. "I—"

"Husband, I believe you were the one encouraging me to engage in uncomfortable activities in order to, quote, expand my comfort zone, unquote. Were you not?"
I'm torn about this. On the one hand, this is supposed to help both of them and definitely isn't for making Shikamaru uncomfortable. On the other, I suspect that this toddlerhoodexperience isn't so serious or tramatic that EJ won't write it out once Shikamaru starts being piled on by floofers.

Also, I was worried that Kei wouldn't want to be touched by puppies so this is a very good sign.
Half a dozen blasts of colored smoke marched around the patio, each resolving itself into a dog.
Six is....acceptable. I'm hoping that Mari is going to get/already got the full treatment of the entire swarm, however. Hazō isn't limited by chakra in that scenario.
Actually, 'dog' wasn't really the right word. Nor was 'young dog'. 'Puppy', while chronologically appropriate, didn't properly convey the reality. No, what Hazō had summoned were six instantiations of the Platonic ideal of adorableness. Six fuzzy, big-eyed, floppy-eared, bundles of love balanced in ungainly fashion atop oversized paws.

Also, six carefully-selected fuzzy, big-eyed, floppy-eared, bundles of love balanced in ungainly fashion atop oversized paws. Most of Hazō's puppies were excitable and energetic, altogether unsuitable for providing the form of lurrrrvvvv that a Nara needed.

Cantred and Cannula, a brother/sister pair of low-slung basset hounds, lolloped over to Keiko and pressed their heads against her knees while looking up with soulful eyes.
Ohhhhhhh. These are the "calm" puppies. I take it back. Six is honestly more than I was expecting for this.
Keiko was, as the moment required, a brutal assassin, a scathingly rapier wit, and a plan-optimizing machine. What she was not, however, was immune to those eyes. She was unable to keep a smile off her face and instead simply nodded. The two pups galumphed up onto the lounger and had a brief and relatively cordial pushing and shoving match to see who who got to claim the best bit of lap. The question settled, they floomped on their backs, paws waving in the air as they wiggled slightly in a silent and highly effective plea for belly rubs. Kei was happy to oblige, her crushing haptophobia apparently inapplicable against the power of adorable tummies.
Yay!

(Also, let's keep this in mind if she ever wants to work on exposure therapy for her haptophobia.)
"Kai," Shikamaru muttered, making the handseal for breaking out of a genjutsu. When reality failed to reassert itself he gave in and began to stroke his fuzzy visitors.

Hazō watched all this in amusement as Canshō, a young beagle, pushed her way onto his chest and bumped her head under his chin in a demand for petting.
I love the Kai!
Quiet descended on the Nara patio. Quiet, and a sense of peace and comfort that brushed aside the very concept of stress. Within ten minutes Shikamaru was asleep with a smile on his face and his hands loosely draped over his visitors.
This is definitely a scene that Hazō needs to immortalize into a life-sized, photorealistic statue replica once his earthshaping is high enough and he has the time. See my OMAKE Planner in my signature for more details.

Wait, since EJ posted a chapter today, does that mean tomorrow is Vel's day, or is EJ still writing it? Because, depending on who's writing what, I may need to shuffle my action plan wrt what's "on-screen."
I'm still writing for Sunday.

I am a bit confused on what everyone's been voting on since we are apparently going with the old plan anyway.
Also, yay puppies! EJ, did you watch the 30-sec clip of the man getting swarmed with them?
@Velorien and I split the original plan due to spoon availability. And yes, I watched the clip -- it was adorable.

PSA: I'm going to run the vote tally from this update, so if you have votes from before it that you want to keep, please re-vote them.

Update: Jesus fuck, those dogs are cute!
A Hyūga with Hiding Like a Mole has definitely already done this. Its such an obvious strategy that I'd be very surprised if this hasn't already been done. In fact, I suspect that Hyūga moles have already been adapted into Leaf's underground defense system.

No no no, we want her fanclub to get involved because then they will think that she likes puppies and start sending them to her.

This will have my vote if you can find a way to specify that the peppermint tea is high-quality.

My mental model when I proposed this idea was that Hazō would have Gaku arrange for the highest possible quality peppermint tea to be sealed right after brewing. Hidan may be an S-Rank ninja, but he's still forced to move around constantly and probably hasn't been able to get tea brewed by the world's best tea maker prepared with the world's highest quality leaves. For us, however, it's a simple as asking Gaku to figure it out offscreen.

Aside from the fact that this is a really good delaying tactic, it also will raise Hidan's mood considerably more than some random tea.

Could you make the current line into something like this?
"Have Gaku arrange the sealing of the world's best peppermint tea. Add to EDC"

Going to be awake from my computer for about 5ish hours. Continue to ping me for feedback, and I'll implement them once I get back.

@eaglejarl, my action plan was first posted before your update (where you're going to begin the vote count). Should I repost the plan, or should whomever first voted for my plan after the update link to it? Not sure what the SOP is regarding situations like this...

Does Hazou have complete sensory awareness of the infused area? If he were looking for buried treasure and infused the area around it would he sense it? I'm pretty sure Earthshaping doesn't do that, that's like the entire purpose of the jutsu "Living Roots"

I don't know about complete sensory awareness, but he's able to see the area within his mind's eye with great detail of the terrain (grain, grooves, channels, etc), so It's a more holistic mental image than living roots.

Living Roots is better for detecting how far away a target is based on the vibrations they produce.

So the difference is ES concentrates more on getting fine detail from an area while LR is better for detecting moving, living targets.

EDIT: IIRC LR isnt great for detecting targets below a certain size.

So what I'm getting from this is that you could have offered Orochimaru a ninjutsu that allows people to scan a large area of terrain with perfect accuracy.
