The kid is constantly looking nervously to the clan head when being asked reasonably innocuous questions, as if worried that answering truthfully without explicit permission will get him thrown in the stockades or beaten with a bokken.

This didn't really sit well with me, but it could just be nerves. Still...
There's also the fact that the clan head of what could be considered the closest thing to an enemy clan within Leaf is acting friendly, yet scrutinizing and demanding, while at the same time disrespecting, if not outright insulting, his own clan head. It's a tense situation to be in for any young genin.

Something to keep in mind about Harumitsu's nerves is that a) he's apparently right out of the Academy and probably just dipping his toes into proper missions, and b) this is easily one of the most important moments of his life. Meeting our expectations makes the difference for him between being a nobody at the bottom of his clan and being a priceless clan asset, and he has no idea how fair Lord Goketsu, enemy of the Hagoromo, will be to him.

He's probably still not the boldest in normal situations, but I imagine this is about as nervous as we'll ever see him.

I am trying to not get attached to that kid as he is most likely going to suffer horribly in a political war in which he is noting but a pawn; but i am failing miserably. I mean, really?!, Diligent, alienated and has a stutter; how not to try and subvert this poor soul to our cause ?

The guy is an obvious patsy for any shenanigans that go down; any seal failures or other fuckups that happen are going to be blamed on us first, and if/when Asuma says that it was clearly not Hazou's fault Ritsuo will just go "oh I guess it was the adopted half-breed trash blah blah insert racist bullshit here".

I don't think thats too likely, we're basically doing this in his living room, so his whole family is likely to get caught in the crossfire.

This guy doesn't strike me as Super Dumb, just a fucking bigoted dick.

If we accept him as our student I propose we eventually have him do tins and fill mission whit the excuse of having him practice perimeter security and kagome's maxim in a low danger environment. Then we can spoon feed him uplift whit examples of how his work makes civilian life better.

"Gōketsu."

"Hagoromo." Hazō didn't bother bowing. 'Lord' Hagoromo did not deserve the respect at the best of times, and he'd kept Hazō waiting ten minutes in the Hagoromo manor's tea hall before deigning to join him. He was now pouring the tea into cups where one cup was directly in front of Hazō and the other was directly in front of himself, a full foot of distance between the two cups.

"So glad you could join us," Hagoromo said. He finished the pour and wiped the lip of the teaspout so that the last drop would not drip and stain the snow-white linen tablecloth.

"The Hokage commanded it," Hazō said, leaning forward quickly enough that he could take the cup from in front of Hagoromo while the older man's hands were busy with the teapot.

Hagoromo froze, glaring daggers at Hazō, then set the pot down delicately and lay his hands gently on his thighs, ignoring the remaining tea.

Hazō pretended, deliberately unconvincingly, to touch the cup to his lips, then set it down. "Delightful tea," he said, not making any effort to inject sincerity.

Oh, the shade! I love it! We should keep Lord Hag alive just for interactions like this! (okay, not really, but still, this was funny and cathartic!)

"Truly?" Hazō shook his head in regret. "I recognize that sealing is a difficult art—it requires intelligence, painstaking attention to detail, and creativity. I had not realized the Hagoromo were so short on these characteristics. Well, let me meet this Harumitsu. If I judge him competent, fine. If not...I'm hardly going to teach someone who I think might destroy reality through his stupidity or flutter-brained carelessness, now am I? We'll simply go back to the Hokage and explain that you have no capable students."

A vein in Hagoromo's temple was starting to throb. Hazō firmly squelched the resulting surge of delight.

[*snerk*]
[*breaks down into giggles*]

"Harumitsu is bright, attentive, and detail-minded. I feel certain you will have no difficulty instructing him."

"It gives me boundless pleasure to hear that you believe that. In the meantime, I gather you have two daughters? Perhaps one of them would make a good candidate. Most likely the younger one—younger minds do tend to learn more quickly."

"Perhaps, although adults are often less foolish and better able to ignore distractions."

Hazō's lips twitched. "I believe you'll find that no one who survives as a sealmaster for more than a week is either foolish or easily distracted. If either of your daughters is stupid, careless, or flutter-brained, I will have no trouble noticing that fact."

"Unfortunately, both of my daughters are occupied on matters of critical importance at the moment. Why don't you interview Harumitsu and we can proceed from there? I feel certain that he will satisfy the fair and unbiased investigation you will no doubt bring to the interview."

HAZ: "Now, now, you're being stupid. I won't be forced to unilaterally pick someone to train. Who's the sealmaster in the room?"
HAG: "We only have him as an option."
HAZ: "Do your daughters not fit the criteria?"
HAG: "I won't have you seducing them."
HAZ: "My, my, someone has so little faith in their own family. Is your bloodline truly so weak?"

"Hello, Harumitsu," Hazō said, smiling in as friendly a fashion as he could manage. Whatever grievance Hazō had with the Hagoromo leadership, this boy did not deserve to be caught in it.

Okay, this? This I liked. This was the right way to go about this.

"You understand that you are here to be considered as my student in the art of sealcraft?" Hazō asked, ignoring the stutter completely. He found himself regretting once again that he was the one sitting here. Kagome-sensei would have been a far better teacher for this young man, but Asuma had ordered that the instruction take place in the Hagoromo estate, and there was no way under the heavens that Kagome-sensei could be here alone for ten minutes without destruction following in his wake. This was going to be a major drain on Hazō's time going forward, but there were no other Gōketsu sealsmiths with sufficient experience and knowledge to teach.

Still say we should've waited until we could adopt that one LGBTQ clanless sealmaster and have him train someone. The Hag would've had a fit and it would've been glorious.

"This is the part where I try to give you an entirely reasonable level of fear," Hazō said, offering a half-smile. "Please understand that you are not required to be my student. Knowing yourself and your own aptitudes and weaknesses is the most critical attribute for any ninja. If at any point you feel that you are not willing or able to pursue this course of study whole-heartedly, it is far better for you to say so than to try to gut it out. Gutting it out on something as dangerous as sealing is like trying to continue a mission when you aren't field-ready: All you're doing is endangering your teammates. You can bow out and there is nothing but honor in doing so. Repeat that back, please."

I like this. Hazou's outright warning the kid that "I'm not trying to bully or be cruel. I'm not using you as a patsy to get back at your Clan Head. I'm trying to give you enough information that you make an informed decision. These are real things that have happened to real sealmasters, often enough through no true fault of their own."

Hazou is trying his damnedest to do right by this kid, and I like that.

Harumitsu glanced briefly at Lord Hagoromo, then swallowed nervously. "My L-Lords, it's obvious t-t-to everyone that there is a p-problem between our c-c-clans. Me being Lord Gōketsu's student might help to fix that problem, at least in a s-s-small way. Lord Gōketsu, you said that it was important that I know m-m-myself. I think I do, and I know the odds for genin survival. Instructors get imp-p-patient with m-m-me because of my s-s-stutter, and my eyes are w-weak; they're fine close up, like for reading or sparring, but I'm not going to s-s-survive a year in the f-f-field. I think sealing doesn't require distance vision, right?"

KID: "Here's the line that I was told to say."
KID: "But between us, I'm an annoying preteen with bad eyesight. I'm going to die soon if I stay on the active mission roster."
KID: "I'm also the bastard son of a ninja and a clanless/civilian woman. My life has no worth. Everyone tells me that, and I'm young enough to believe it."
HAZOU: "The Goketsu feel differently."

"Well done," Hazō said, nodding thoughtfully. A spike of anger went through him when Harumitsu brightened at the very minimal compliment. "All right, the next test is basic brushwork. A sealmaster must have clean writing, avoid splotches or misplaced ink, and must be able to repeat the same design precisely, over and over again." He unsealed a writing desk and supplies and passed them over to Harumitsu. "First, show me your basic handwriting. Write the Academy Creed for me."

[*Slams hand on table*]
I WANT THIS KID IN THE UPLIFT FAMILY!!

Harumitsu swallowed nervously. "M-My Lord...when I was t-told that I would be considered as y-your student, I t-t-t-tried to go find some books on s-seal theory, but they are all r-r-restricted. So I b-b-borrowed as many explosive t-tags and storage seals as I could and c-compared them all. They're all d-different depending on who m-m-made them, and each one was a little different than the others, but I noticed that the p-p-pressure seems really important. Anywhere that there was f-f-f-feathering, it was always as close to identical as I could see. Also, they were all clean copies with no t-t-touch-ups, so it was obvious that you can't fix a seal once you've d-d-drawn it. I feathered those seals wrong so I threw them out."

Showed initiative and insight. Not to mention he likely found a lot of Hazou and Kagome's own sealwork to compare --if nothing else, then because Hazou and Kagome churn out a small nation's worth of explosives on the daily and then hand them out like candy on Halloween. I like him.

Time ticked by slowly and Hazō fell into something of a meditative trance, studying his probable student without letting his mind fixate on any particular detail. When Hazō had asked, Kagome-sensei had been a fount of advice on the subject of teaching and how to select a student. How it was good to maintain identical conditions when practicing a given thing until mastery of the basics was achieved but also important to change something about the study conditions when changing topics, as different conditions provided 'hooks' that made it easy for the memory to distinguish between the different topics. About maintaining the right balance between praise so as to avoid causing despair or dislike of the teacher, but also sincerity so that the student didn't lose faith in the teacher's words or become complacent. About the value of different sensory modalities to aid in memorization and comprehension—speaking the words, providing them in written form, offering physical objects to be manipulated where feasible, and so on. It had been an intense conversation that made Hazō feel like his brain was too full.

[*sighs in future educator*]
I know the feeling.

The dance was essentially the same as a taijutsu kata, and every Academy student was expected to master those through watching. Harumitsu had no trouble with it, although Hazō did correct his foot position during one of the pelvic thrust segments. Harumitsu began again, but stumbled slightly and blushed beet red when one of the guards strangled a very quiet snort of amusement.

"Congratulations, fuckwit," Hazō said, his voice cold. "You just distracted a sealmaster during a critical safety procedure. The best outcome is that you killed one of your clanmates and deprived your clan of a sealmaster. Brilliant job. Get the fuck out and tell your Clan Head to find someone who isn't such an idiot to guard the rest of these meetings."

On one hand, probably just being paranoid and teaching Harumitsu these dances just in case. On the other hand, Kagome has a track record of being right far more often than he should be, especially about things that you would swear couldn't possibly be right.

On the other-other hand, Harumitsu is a twelve year old who has been told his life is worthless because he was a clanless ninja, and then when he joined a clan, he was told his life was worthless because he was a bastard child. And the guard --however unintentionally --caused Harumitsu a great deal of embarrassment, and now anytime he does this totally necessary protective ritual, he'll remember being embarrassed (which might make him mess up).

Harumitsu didn't reply, focusing instead on repeating the motions he had been shown. This time he got it—not flawlessly, as he still needed more arc on the arm swings, but well enough.

Must be hard for Hazou-of-the-Iron-Nerve to see that normal people can't flawlessly recreate their successful actions each and every time. I know Hazou once mentioned his Iron Nerve created a distance between him and other people, that he felt like a robot/puppet on strings, and I can't help but wonder how this difference in qualia is going to impact Hazou in his capacity as an instructor.

Still, Hazou has an immense amount of empathy and compassion, so I think he'll manage to overcome it.

"Good," Hazō said, taking his seat again and gesturing for Harumitsu to do the same. "Last step in the process: learning new material. How much do you know about mathematics?"

Harumitsu looked stricken. "I'v-v-ve h-h-h-had the b-b-basic Academy m-m-m-mathem-matics, M-My Lord? I kn-n-now there's m-m-m-more b-b-ut I haven't s-s-seen it."

"Excellent, that means this this really will be new to you. What about astrology? Can you name the Thirteen Signs? Do you know the difference between jellicle and tosurent?"

Tears were gathering at the edge of Harumitsu's eyes. He shook his head mutely.

This boy needs all this hugs, all the positive feedback, and a mountain of Goketsu-style familial affection. Maybe he has some enemies we can drown?

Harumitsu took the folder and clutched it to his chest, his eyes very wide as he nodded like a bobble head. A moment later he realized that his nodding could be interpreted as inadequate respect, so he started bowing repeatedly and deeply.

Oh, kid. Eh, he'll learn. I want to train him.

Cute kid. Let's hope he survives.

Let's ensure it.

Wait. Can you feel that?

Something... theres been a shift in —

"I'm glad you like it. Shall we proceed? I have chosen your student. He is young, but—"

"Excuse me. I believe you meant to say that you have proposed a student for my consideration? The Hokage did specify that the choice must be mutually agreed."

GASP

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I WANTED A SITH APPRENTICE!

Its not faaaaaiiiiirrr
I was like reasonably sure that was it, but Keiko's proclivity for saying very little with long strings of overly dramatic phrases gave me pause.

Keiko's powerbase and influence is increasing at an alarming rate.

We must counterbalance this to maintain the current dynamic.

Given that the whole "Sith Lord" schtick has been appropriated by her, I am willing to move the framing to more of a "Jedi Master" type relationship with multiple apprentices and/or friends.

Join me, @Roomba, and together we shall defeat the oncoming tide of darkness.
NOBURI: What if we acquired a bunch of Sith Apprentices for you to delegate all the grunt work to in exchange for elevating their status and teaching them an indispensably useful ninja art?

HAZOU: Brother, we have never been more in alignment. Please, cackle mischieviously with me until Keiko stops her most recent self-deprecating monologue.

KEIKO: Hey!
Your weekly reminder that most gaping pits of time expenditure can be heavily streamlined by acquiring half a dozen Sith Apprentices in varying areas for the clan. Just get everyone a Kouhai at this point, and get Kagome those clanless kids as sealing students so that we can have them print out all of our seals in 3-4 momths instead of having Hazou and Kagome spend 40-50 hours a month doing it.
Snrk.

Snrk is only one letter away from Snek.

Otherwise:

WHERE IS MY SITH APPRENTICE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

!!!
Hazō turned back to Lord Hagoromo. "I admit, he's better than I expected you to give me. I'll leave you to it for now. After I've assessed him tomorrow we'll see; if he can't do the work then you'll need to find another candidate. Otherwise, I look forward to working with him."

Oh we're going to have such fun subverting/empowering him to stand up for himself. Thanks for giving us literally your weakest link Hagoromo, you dipshits.

Something I mentioned on discord but kinda want to bring up here too: There are lots of things we can do to subvert him to uplift if we can talk with him one on one, but that's initially hampered by Lord Hagoromo or his lackeys breathing down our neck. As such, I have an idea for how we can take the first steps under his nose while being completely unchallengeable about it.

In the middle of all of our intensive sessions, we take a break to destress before the second half, and fill that break with conversation, notably philosophy. Ostensibly this lets us press him to build confidence, which is genuinely an important thing for him to have, but the true purpose is to figure out his philosophical beliefs and let him build familiarity with our own. That way, when the master/student bond starts forming after a while and the environment starts looking right to set up some one on one talks about Uplift, he'll already be half-turned, and there isn't a single thing Lord Hagoromo can do to call us out on it.

Is it possible that Lord Hag, in his infinite Jonin low cunning, anticipates that the playerbase would take to Harumitsu like catnip? He's ostracised, clanless, suffering from a physical impediment. Lord Hag could have installed the Ninja equivalent to a wire on him because he knows there's basically no way the playerbase would refuse the poor guy.

/voice of Kagome

Why were we asking after his daughters, anyway?

This reminds me of Keiko's summoning lessons in Isan. If Hazo can draw from that for inspiration, that'd be good.

"Hello, welcome, and thank you for your interest. I am your first point of contact in your journey towards formally joining the Gouketsu, should you wish to continue. Statistical analysis has established that it is most efficient for everybody if somebody occupying my role reads you in to the summaries of some of the shinobi you may be joining."

"First off is lord Hazou. His mother was a clan heir during the rule of Yagura before she told them where they could shove their orders and was thrown out with the clothes on her back. When he was six his father died and his aunt tried to seduce him with promises of a rich, easy life. He impolitely declined. He has since piloted a troupe of outcast misfits into a voting clan in the most powerful state on the planet by literally walking on air and making the most dangerous people on the planet threaten to throw him in the midden. He currently averages about one S-Class killing intent a month. Four of them were Hokage. He was on a first-name basis with the last three before they were Hokage. T&I has decided that it is more budgetarily convenient to just invoice him for monthly killbox-hours."

"The next is Akane. She is the single friendliest person you will ever meet. She also told the lady Senju that she was wrong. About medicine. To her face. Then she knowingly walked into a punch. Then she stood back up. All-in-all, probably the most benign of the bunch."

"Noburi can be easily charmed by referring to him as the 'Gouketsu Prince'. He is quite amicable and has a healthy relationship with his brother, but it should not be forgotten that when he came to his siblings confessing an impediment to his wedding they immediately went to war so hard the Hokage had to personally step in and put a stop to it for the sake of sheer national security. His bloodline may also be a critical factor in a few dozen clan plots."

"Yuno is Noburi's other half. She is an involuntary sacrificial lamb of a misbegotten backwater who in childhood stabbed to death and beyond with a blunt training knife the monster who murdered her father in front of her. She then left her village and wandered the world before finding her way to her beloved bloodsoaked but unharmed. Also has an axe which talks to her and sees colors. Do not touch."

"Mari likes you. That's not necessarily true, but it is in your best interests to sincerely believe it. I really should just be able to say 'elite jounin', but then she wouldn't be a Gouketsu. Has cultivated a unique school of conflict resolution."

"The lady Nara is the token anchor of sanity among what we civilians have come to think of as 'The Trio'- except when she's not. Ask the Hagoromo for details. She tends to complain about being overworked while simultaneously playing omni-agent with senior members of voting clans."

"The Ami has no doubt already noted my mention of them. Since there aren't any genjutsu-specced shinobi available let's just pretend that I spun your head around until you vomited and then drowned you in a frozen river."

"Haru doesn't like you. Haru doesn't even like us. In fact, the only thing Haru likes less than the Gouketsu is anything which comes to his attention in his responsibility as a Gouketsu. He is in charge of the complaints department."

"There is no Kagome. Kagome does not exist. There certainly is no autistic savant who spent a full decade contemplating stealth and explosives before casually snapshotting hundreds of tons of megalodon. If the Kagome did exist, you would most definitely not have any way of knowing that he is already standing right behind you waiting for an unfortunate sudden movement to drop the bass."

"Now, why did you want to join the Gouketsu?"

So, the way I see it is that we throw an octopus and a cabbage into a cauldron. Winner eats the loser, then gets boiled in oil in turn.

Also, we apparently need to figure out how to rig a superhuman prosthetic out of a medieval tech base and bullshit ninja battle-majic.

Engineers, assemble!

Ideally, these should be separate projects. Mixing the envelopes up could lead to some very confused Nara and Akimichi consultants.

  • Ami
    • Tone: We're supposed to be equal partners, let's achieve mutual understanding
    • Thank you her for the apology message.
    • Does she know why you were angry?
      • We understood your hidden message, but the way you communicated it was abhorrent
        • You exploited intimate information about us.
        • We were shocked and panicked, fixating on how dangerous pregnancy for Akane would be.
        • You could've just said it outright, since even you admit that no one was within earshot.
          • Pranks are fun, but the line between fun and cruel is fine
            • You're allowed to ask
              • Trust us, of all people, to be reasonable about weird things.
      • Cruel methods, though effective in bridging qualia, cannot exist between us.
        • Ami, if someone expressed this level of existential disregard for Keiko (especially for something as paltry as communicative efficiency) what would you do?
      • Normally it's permissible, because ninja. But we're more than that: family.
    • "Mutually beneficial relationship between two neutral entities" is easy.
      • But we're not just that, otherwise things wouldn't be so difficult.
      • We're something new, and that requires change from both of us.
        • Not repeating rote, old patterns because it's familiar/safer.
        • And yes, it's pain. Welcome to the party. But in our experience, it's so worth it.
    • If we don't exist in your priorities, this whole fiasco is just a result of us misplacing our trust. We don't think that's the case. Uplift aside, we're united in our shared priority in Keiko.
    • We would offer a peace offering, but there is nothing to offer, because:
      • As family, if she ever needs help, we'd help her regardless. Because normal rules don't apply.
    • You have a permanent seat at our dinner table, and an optimization meeting (at your choosing) for your… plan.
  • Keiko
    • Optimize with the Goketsu, Tenten, and Shika
    • Keiko, we've noticed that you're stressed, and that you don't seem to feel comfortable with the success that you've achieved. Would you like to talk about that? We can (and will) list out each and every reason why you've earned the success you've gained.
    • Crystal Sisters
      • During the Engagement Party, Crystal made a social mistake (Crystal propositioning Hazou)
      • You've been tolerant of our social blunders, even when you would've been justified in turning against us (ex: first killbox)
      • Is there anything we could do to help our sisters' progression as individuals
        • Failing that: we could be an ear to listen, as you vent your frustrations?
      • We were also wondering if you would be against us spending time with our new sisters? FOOM can wait a bit if it means our family stays connected. What use is power if it means you're alone and your family is neglected? Look at Orochimaru.

  • Sanity check with Mari.
  • Meet with Asuma to discuss the LGBT community.
    • We will comply with Asuma's orders to not use the LGBT community as a weapon against Hagoromo. We want to consult him on what we can do to protect them and reduce the ostracism they face without crossing the lines he's set in the name of Leaf security.
    • Can we still offer them sancturary?
    • Can we continue to hold meetings for them?
    • Can we make non-vitriolic attempts to normalise them?
    • Is there anything else that he would suggest, or particular dangers that he would like us to be mindful of?
    • On another note: is there anything we can do to make his life easier wrt the concubine law (or just in general)?
  • Meet with Shikamaru to discuss necromancy.
    • Pain brought Akatsuki back to life with a ninjutsu, and we've physically entered the afterlife and brought back someone we watched die right in front of us.
    • We're looking into ways to reopen our portal or create another, so that we can send expeditions into the afterlife and rescue the dead from it.
    • While we'll refrain from being too emotional at him, there are people that we both very much want to recover.
    • We want to do this sensibly. If that means that it takes years or decades then fine, so long as it gets done. We're beginning the early phase of information-gathering right now.
    • Will he join us in this project?
      • If so, explain our experiences in the afterlife in detail (especially wrt loss of chakra). Also ask him for information on the paths, or anything else he might think is relevant that isn't Nara secrets.
  • Research LBF.

To clarify, what does Hazō believe the hidden message was?
Optimize with the Goketsu, Tenten, and Shika
In practical terms, how? Is Hazō going to aim for a time when Keiko's not at the Nara compound to visit them?
During the Hag-Rebellion Party, our sister made a social mistake
What does this refer to?
Can we still offer them sancturary?
What does this entail?
Can we make non-vitriolic attempts to normalise them?
I have a vague idea of what you mean, but I'm not sure Asuma will. Can you clarify?

What does this entail?

Offering them a place to stay on our compound if they're feeling unsafe.

I have a vague idea of what you mean, but I'm not sure Asuma will. Can you clarify?

Mostly spreading propagander among the leaf populace that LGBT people aren't weird perverts and are still people who you should care about, without directly trying to turn people against bigots or otherwise attacking them.

Not sure if people at large belive that, i think that we should ask Mari fist in order to confirm if that would be productive before bringing it to asuma.

[x] Action Plan: Steps Forward

  • Can we still offer them sancturary?
  • Can we continue to hold meetings for them?

That's what he said:

Asuma leaned forward over his desk. "Being honest, I don't care about any of this. You and the Nara and the Hagoromo can sort out the insults that both sides feel they were delivered and I don't particularly care how you do it as long as it doesn't affect Leaf as a whole or its military readiness. I don't care if sexual deviants want to spontaneously group up for mutual support—in fact, more power to them. Everyone should have the chance to be happy and I don't care if they're futtering a man, a woman, or a sheep—although the spines make that last one risky—so long as they are willing and able to do the missions I assign them. None of this is my problem... until you made it my problem by involving Leaf society in general with your war against the Hagoromo.

So the answer is probably just: Yes, as long as it doesn't make him some problems, just saying that you could cut it for wordcount.

We should ask him if there is a way for us to help him to pass the Concubine laws in their original state without any further changes. He does need the goodwill of the more conservative clans, doesn't mean there isn't anything we could do to help.

Meet with Shikamaru to discuss necromancy.

Ask him about the other paths? Kagome isn't 100% reliable on this topic.

And share with him our observation of the other Path, the whole chakra doesn't stay there seems important.

I'd still feel safer double-checking. I'll remove it if people want it gone closer to the deadline.

I think I can work in the other stuff.
