2314.Q4.M3.F1

Having retired Admiral Kahurangi around Starfleet Headquarters again was a special treat for everyone. The last few years of sun and relaxation have done her a world of good. You appreciate the opportunity to commiserate with one of the very, very few people who have any idea what it's like to be in your job. But at the end of the day, you brought Kahurangi back to do work. Her first opportunity arrives with the Arcadian yacht, His Arcadian Majesty's Yacht Morshanib. Representatives of the Imperial throne and the major Houses are in attendance. You send along Vitalia to to the New Seoul Summit, sending her along on a UESPA Constellation.

Despite the best efforts of all involved, no common ground can be found that might avert war.

However...

There are glimmers of a post-bellum order that may come to pass. The urgency of the situation, plus the clout of Vitalia, prompt the deepest cooperation between Starfleet and the Diplomatic Service that you can recall in your decades of service. The Intel services of both sides work together and focus your efforts on the Tartresis and the Bene. Baroness Othid Tartresis, a cousin of the Duke, is the chief emissary of that House, and Kahurangi establishes an early rapport. They will fight alongside their liege, they won't turn their backs on Arcadia during a war, but they are a noble people, and if Starfleet fights in a noble fashion, then it is entirely possible to see peaceful relations with a Tartresis run Empire.

There is rather a hiccup in proceedings when the Ixarians present some of the after-action reports of the M5 computer fiasco, along with some fairly alarmist views on the potential fallout. Not a few current senior Starfleet officers had involvement in that incident. Kahurangi isn't the only one rubbing old war wounds after hearing that name. But the argument is made convincingly that an AI disaster is something that can be safeguarded against, but the full mentat process effectively produces its own failure state.

Meanwhile, the Bene show a certain flexibility. They may hold the key to avoiding a scenario where the war has to be prosecuted to bedrock. There is nothing concrete, of course, but your Intelligence officers tell you they have back-channels open now that will allow them to continue to talk to House Bene in the future.

At the end of the day, unfortunately, with the intransigence of the Ixarians, the Kortennon, and the reluctance of the throne itself, a path to averting war cannot be found. A new ultimatum stands, to expire at the end of the year, in one month's time.

State of Emergency, 2314.Q4.M3.F1 (Turn 5 of State of Emergency)

You are currently operating in a State of Emergency.

This entails an increased operational tempo and an increase to available assets.
These assets usually will require no additional resources from Starfleet, as you are directing the resources of a Federation that does not embrace money. Any additional requirements will be noted on the actions themselves. The most notable brake on your mobilisation of assets comes from their effect on the war support of the various member groups. You have already been provided control over a large fraction of fleet assets from the member worlds nearest the LBZ, but more can be requisitioned.

This State of Emergency will endure until such time as the cause of the crisis is resolved. In this case, until the Mentats of the Arcadian Empire no longer poses a threat to the Federation.

DEVAS AND ASURAS
Chapter Two

Recommended Listening: Selection from Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7

USS Republic
Six Light-Minutes off Deva IX
Stardate 25152.7

"Engineering, give me main phaser conduit status."

"Holding; some heating, but we can sustain this output level for- I'd estimate forty to sixty minutes."

"Good, but try to improve that."

There wasn't much room to put more tubes on the torpedo-heavy Constitution-A. But there'd been room to run a dedicated EPS tap up through the neck, straight from the warp core to the forward phaser banks. The old-style banks, with deep battery rooms and rugged circuits, overbuilt for their era and with more than their share of potential for overcharging. Those were Republic's real teeth, now.

Switching that tap on had been one of the first moves Sulu'd made, after Kumari and Endurance jumped into position. So long as power burned straight from the antimatter furnace to the cruiser's main beams, they couldn't escape into warp- but anything that crossed Republic's bow would know it had been kissed.

There they go again! The chaotic turning battle was a madhouse. Sulu was a child of the early '90s Academy, a tactical tradition focused on the classic single-ship actions of the 23rd century. Only occasionally had they practiced a surprise jump to Axanar or Caleb IV or the sort of crazy dogpile Dad might come up with. But they had practiced those. And a good thing too, at Kadesh, when all the old admirals were out of the picture. It had been the laughing wild child from the Academy class ahead of hers that took command, then, used that training, and did the new generation proud.

Sulu felt a thin, dauntless twist of her lips coming on, something close to a smile. She didn't particularly care for the dizzying brawl the Sydraxians were trying for, with threats on every side. But she could cope, and she could fight her ship, trying to impose shape on the fight. Hasques swooped around to trap Kumari in a crossfire; Republic and Korolev's forward phaser banks pounded the Sydraxian escorts back with brilliant, flickering, summer-lightning beams.

The Sydraxians returned fire, their escorts' chin guns blazing before breaking off the swooping attack runs. Republic's reinforced shields shuddered under the hammer. But combining their attack with Kumari's crack gunners, the Starfleet cruisers wove a net of death the Hierarchy ships couldn't escape, despite the baffling grace with which even their heavy units slipped out from under Starfleet sights. The Mirandas, with the broad firing arcs of their turret phasers, did their best to corral the enemy back into the cruisers' path, but it was a long, long way from easy.

And once in a while...

"Ma'am, Endurance is relaying their next target. I have a lock on them."

Once in a while, old 'Uncle Pavel' brought the artillery. "Tactical, arm torpedoes. Stand by to fire a spread, impact immediately after Endurance's birds. Helm, bring us around; put that cruiser at relative bearing eighty mark sixty. Tactical, main forward phasers, full fire."

Answering Sulu's word, the sleek Constitution yawed and pitched her saucer upwards, giving the main phaser banks full play. M'Rasha seized her moment, the heavy phasers lancing out to put ripples in the heavy cruiser's shields as the forward tubes whumped, sending a pair of blazing missiles downrange.

And then it happened. For far from the first time during the scrambling ship to ship dogfight, the Sydraxian cruiser seemed to slide in a direction no engine burn or maneuvering blast could properly explain, piloted with an effortless grace. Despite the Kalindrax's almost explorer-grade size and bulk, she seemed almost leisurely as she out-danced six torpedoes from Endurance. The flaming scarlet bolts of destruction tracked towards their target, but too late- perhaps blinded, perhaps simply outmaneuvered, four detonated dozens of kilometers off their heavily shielded target's bow, barely affecting it. Two more lit up the cruiser's shields to minimal effect, most of the gamma ray burst rolling off into space in a shower of crackling, dissipating energies.

Sadly for the Hierarchy, Endurance's phasers tracked them through the turn, drawing shield power off to that flank- just as their helmsman's evasive turn brought them squarely into the path of the pair of torpedoes from Republic, on crossing trajectories artfully laid in by the Caitian tactician. Antimatter erupted, spraying broad patterns of shield scatter where the expanding bubble of gamma rays met the hard-held dome of force covering the Sydraxians' broadside. The heavy, armored ship reeled under the heavy blow.

"Reading their shields at just over thirty-five percent, ma'am!" M'Rasha called with satisfaction.

"Good work, Guns-" Damn. The Mirandas were starting to fail to keep back the more numerous enemy escorts. Again. If Kumari got caught in a nutcracker like the one Republic and Endurance had set up for the Sydraxian heavy hitter for any length of time, the whole battle could fall apart!

Sulu had cut herself off in midsentence to issue the next round of orders. "Helm, bring us around on a reciprocal course; Tactical, plot a firing pattern that will force those warbirds to go full evasive." Settling the enemy cruiser's hash would just have to wait. But they could do it. Sulu felt a bit of a smile twitch at the corners of her mouth. They were doing it!

That was when all six Sydraxian ships pitched up and over and unloaded a sudden, massed barrage of weapons fire at USS Endurance.

Heavy Cruiser Skafladrax
Six Light-Minutes off Deva IX

Conductor Rexasodie's ships wheeled and whirled and danced, lines of death and power stitching out across the eternal night. The moment came, she judged, watching nervously as the Federation ships exploited their formidable beam weapons. Even so, there were moments of greater and lesser pressure. And this was the moment to carry out the commands she'd already issued.

"Strike!"

Trusting, her captains executed her orders without delay. Six ships swirled, still taking the brunt of Federation weapons on their wavering shields as they twisted around. The full firepower of six million tons of solidly built warships came to bear on that lone, sharpshooting Excelsior, so far out on the edge of the battlezone.

The scarlet flame of massed disruptors struck Endurance's shields like a blowtorch. Her frigates' axial cannon snarled and tore at the dreadnought's defenses. Sheaves of torpedoes blurred across the gap, and she awaited their arrival tensely. This wasn't safe, might not be wise- but it was the only way to do more than inconvenience that lone enemy ship. And that, they had to do; Chekov's sniping fire, guided by the the massive dreadnought's sensor suite, was more than her ships could take while fighting fang and claw against Kumari and her little sisters.

Even under overwhelming attack, Chekov's practiced crew clearly knew their business. The entire torpedo spread from the frigate Tintreax suddenly veered aside, the little ship reporting that somehow the Starfleet wizards had hacked their fire control telemetry. Then another spread, from another frigate- the same fate, but still the remaining missiles closed in. Three more vanished in a sudden gulp of inverted, devouring un-space, something her own CIC chief couldn't even analyze except as "SPACETIME ANOMALY," with a hasty note about deflector dish adjustments.

That still left a great many torpedoes running straight and swift, and though the range was long, the Sydraxian barrage had finally crossed it.

USS Endurance

"Good work!" Pavel Chekov shouted encouragement to the quiet, dry woman at the comm console, not that she needed it. Whatever trick she'd used probably wouldn't work on Sydraxians in any other battle, not unless they were outstandingly stupid- but it had done wonders to ease their troubles here and now. So would that burble of warp field Commander Kole had managed to coax from the main deflector. But as For the rest...

"All hands, brace for impact!"

Sparks of induced fusion ripped through metallic hydrogen as the Sydraxian torpedoes reached their target. Already abused and thinned, the explorer's shields flared blue, then burst like a soap bubble. Crackling arcs of disruptor fire ate into Endurance's starboard nacelle and stitched lines of fireballs across half the saucer. The great ship rocked, power surging and faltering, propulsion offline while the crews down in Engineering scrambled to bring backups into operation.

Heavy Cruiser Skafladrax

"Its shields are down!"

The flagship rocked fiercely, jolting her against her seat restraints. That felt like a blast had penetrated the weak shield bubble entirely and scarred Skafladrax's armor. The fleet's emergency batteries would help with that soon, but even so this battle wasn't going well. Maybe, maybe she could turn the tide before minor damage started to add up beyond what her squadron could survive to tell the tale. Not that she was looking forward to her after-action lay, even in the best possible case.

But, having lamed Endurance, it remained to finish it. Keeping up concentrated fire much longer would doom her command as the rest of their squadron reacted. On the other hand-

The Hierarchy had never yet had any joy of a clash with Federation in deep space. They'd harried blasphemous Miracht in vain. They'd raided, they'd attacked fortress-stations. In vain. They'd ambushed- still in vain. But face to face, in personal combat? Nothing Starfleet had ever accomplished had given the Sydraxians much reason to fear them. Close up, no longer wrapped in millions of tons of steel, all the advantages of alien superscience would be neutralized. That was a fight they could win.

The Hierarchy's cruisers were built like fortresses. They could keep up full power on, say, their ventral shields- and still flicker down the opposite side to beam commandoes onto the alien dreadnought. They could do it. For a while, at least. If she used the reserve batteries.

"All ships, emergency supercharge to the shields. Cruisers are to break away from the enemy main body, reinforce shields facing the main body, and prepare to beam boarding parties over to the Endurance. Tintreax is detached to support the boarders and act as staging nest for boarding operations. All other ships, keep up full fire on the enemy main body; they may try to exploit our vulnerability."

Her ships were stretched cruelly thin by the enemy's superior weight of metal, but maybe, maybe she could stretch this out into a win of some kind, or at least force the enemy to withdraw and leave her one of the huge "explorers" as a prize. That would be a Hierarchy victory worth more than a little price in blood and steel...

Captain's Log, USS Odyssey, Stardate 25681.3 - Captain Langa Mbeki

A passing cargo ship reported unusual sensor readings coming from the sixth planet of the Cronulla system. Of course, with the recent demands on the attention of the Explorer Corps, this task has sat for about a year, so I'm not sure what we will find when we arrive.

-

Personal Log, Commander Jennifer Zhang, Stardate 25682.3

My time aboard the Basilica of Lakhept is coming to a close, but we still have a mission to go on. The Honiani have discovered a new spacegoing power on their coreward border and Big Lak is going to pay our respects. We're not sure of too many details about what these people are like, but we mean to put our best foot forward.

I will be allowed to make contact on behalf of the Federation as well, and the Diplomatic Service have sent me some details to help me make a good impression.

-

Captain's Log, USS Bulwark, Stardate 25682.7

[Chief of Staff's NB: FYI - This one came my way from the Director of Starfleet Engineering along with a lot of colourful invective]

As per orders from Starfleet Engineering, we deployed to Viridia IV, at the coreward end of the neutral zone, where the new listening post was meant to go.

Turns out that the mapping run that was meant to pass over this planet first before we established the facility was never run and there's semi-intelligent life down there. I don't know who fouled this up over on Operations end, but I can't put this facility down without violating, at last count, forty-two Federation laws.

[Lost 10pp]

-

Captain's Log, USS Odyssey, Stardate 25683.4

The gas giant at Cronulla VI is still putting out unusual energy readings. Highly localised and utterly mystifying, well within the cloud layer, just hovering along above the liquid ammonia layer of the planet, we are having a hard time isolating its sensor signature through the natural interference.

My chief science officer has proposed cleaning up the sensor image by placing probes at three points around the anomaly.

-

Personal Log, Commander Jennifer Zhang, Stardate 25683.7

The Obar are a rather long-limbed and spindly race, with a covering across their head and shoulders that truthfully makes me thing of tree moss. Their chief emissary, Ambassador Akthuun, puts me in the mind of a stern but gold-hearted grandfather. A somewhat dangerous impression for someone who you are meant to be conducting diplomacy with!

A thoughtful and ponderous man, he seems quite taken with the Honiani. I hope I have made as good an impression for the Federation.

-

Captain's Log, USS Odyssey, Stardate 25684.1

There's something incredibly strange about this energy reading. After we isolated it down with the probes, it began to emit EM pulses through the atmosphere. My science officer believes that there is something pattern-like about these pulses, and is trying to identify what it could be.

The ship's counsellor is telling me that she senses a presence down in the gas giant's atmosphere as well.

-

Personal Log, Commander Jennifer Zhang, Stardate 25684.5

I have started making arrangements for an envoy from the Obar to travel to Rigel to meet with the Federation. And even some of the normally taciturn members of the Obar delegation have expressed enthusiasm about the Federation.

Some kind words thrown in our direction by the Honiani also helped.

[New Race Encountered: the Obar - starting 65/100]

[Gain +50 relations with Honiani for successful completion of Jennifer Zhang's tour]

-

Captain's Log, USS Odyssey, Stardate 25685.1

The energy anomaly is an intelligent life form! It is using the energy pulses back through the atmosphere in an attempt to communicate with us. We've managed some primitive exchanges by sending pulses indicating basic electrical principles, plus leaning on our telepathic ship's counsellor. I'm thrilled to be a part of this discovery, to find life in such an unexpected visage.

[Gain +10rp, Cronulla VI is now a research colony option]

2314.Q4.M3.F2

Tick tock, tick tock...

You can hear every passing second as the clock on the ultimatum draws down to its final ebb. There is no five minutes to midnight diplomatic rush.

The Gaeni have been waiting.
The Ked Paddah have been waiting.
The Arcadians have been waiting.
The Romulans, the Klingons, the Cardassians, the Honiani, the manifold powers of the galaxy, all have their eyes on Sol III and the forthcoming declaration.

The last days of peace are at hand.

Kahurangi is also on hand, and she is your confidant in these days of bitter self-reflection and terrible anxiety. Her war was a simple thing by comparison - so much more dangerous, but morally as simple as can be. She helps you face the coming multi-layered storm. She is there along with Eriksson, Sulu, zh'Dohlen, sh'Tharvasse, and your other most trusted officers and friends, as President Arsharra N'Gir steps up to the podium on Federation Broadcast News.

"My fellow citizens of the Federation. As of ten minutes ago, the deadline for the ultimatum issued to the Arcadian Empire of Morshadd expired. As a consequence, it is my melancholy duty to account that the Council of the United Federation of Planets hereby recognises that a state of war exists..."

=====================================

State of Emergency, 2314.Q4.M3.F2 (Turn 6 of State of Emergency)

Recon Units

Recon Units

Supplementary patrol units that you can attach to your starbases, outposts, and fleet units.
Internal Diplomacy

Internal Diplomacy

Assets that you can employ to help bolster links between member worlds, or shore up flagging support. They can also be used to increase the rate with which you are able to mobilise assets, though that may become a double-edged sword.
External Diplomacy

External Diplomacy

Assets that you can employ to conduct relations with other nearby powers, such as the Ked Paddah, the Honiani, the Laio, the Gaeni, and others.
Engineering Teams

Engineering Teams

Field deployable units consisting of Engineering Ships, construction crews, and the like. They are capable of conducting operations abroad in unsettled systems.
Heavy Industry

Heavy Industry

You need heavy industry to provide extra boosts to ship production, repair, to produce the components necessary for constructing stations, outposts, and starbases.
Doctrine Specialists

Doctrine Specialists

All doctrines are plans, and no plan survives first contact with the enemy. War is the most unforgiving task master, so you best learn what works and doesn't work quickly.

Admiral's Stateroom, USS Sarek

"My dear Captain! What did they do to you!?"

Thuir looks up at the familiar but horribly unwelcome voice. For a few slow seconds he breaths in deeply, looking to keep his calm. "I believe you'll find that they promoted me. It's Commodore Thuir, now."

"I know, Michel, it's horrible!" The energetic being of seemingly limitless powers pops up onto Thuir's desk and crosses her legs nonchalantly. "How could you let them do that? We would have had so many adventures together!"

"Be still my bleeding heart," replies Michel dryly as he leans back in his chair. "To what do I owe the pleasure, Q?"

Q flicks her hair back over her shoulder and shrugs. "What, do I need a reason to see my favourite captain after years away?" Thuir just looks at her silently. "Well, if you must know, the idea of humanity going on a crusade to cease the recklessness of another new race to be absolutely hilarious. I wouldn't miss this for the world."

Admiral Sousa,

We've been holding tight for the past quarter. The recent spate of battle has clearly pushed our repair infrastructure as far as it can be born, which is leaving me waiting on the new repair yard and marshalling the remaining assets. Unfortunately, the start of the problems with the Arcadians has clearly left me a bit further down in terms of resources, and I am starting to put out feelers towards our counterparts among the Indorians and Caitians to see if they are interested in joining out efforts here.

In good news, the Amarkians have finished the Tal Hanar outpost, and are preparing to establish a mining colony to exploit some of its riches. They want to establish a civilian colony sooner rather than later, but we are still red-lighting that for the time being due to safety concerns.

Sincerely,
Rear Admiral Rachel Ainsworth

The man who led the Amarkian response to Syndicate slaving raids in Amarkian Space.

Sector Details
Roughly encompasses area from 4h to 1e, with outcroppings, with space above and below this plane
~15 Squares worth, each of which contains a few dozen stars, of which a quarter will have planets and other items of interest
Each power is accessing the sector from a different direction. Your staff will be attempting to surge out, claim, then retain space. Keeping a safe route for logistics for stations and nascent colonies will be important.
To start with, your commanders will have Starfleet assets and Starfleet auxiliaries. They will begin to ask for other resources, and you will be empowered by Acts of Council to pick and choose who you use to contribute.

Shipyard Ops - 2315.Q1
2315.Q1

So it has come to war.

The beast that lurks within has been freed from its chain, and the Federation will flex its might. For the first time in many years, the commander of Starfleet looks out over their domain and prepares to do harm. You must now set aside questions of righteousness, the question of if this is necessary, if it could have been avoided, if the President is up for the task. Right now you know that the only way out is through, and the quicker and more decisive you can make this fight, the less bloody and the less risky it will be.

As always, your first task in the new year is to tend to the forges of exploration, the shipyards that dot the Federation.

Starfleet Intelligence Report

Admiral,

Indications are strong that two of the under development shipyards Cardassia is establishing have been completed. One is at Karadoc, the other at Cardassia. Both shipyards consist of a pair of Jaldun-size berths. The other shipyards should complete within the year.

Dutifully,
Commander Tabhria Palanna, Supervisor, Office 34, Starfleet Intelligence

Member World Coordination Office Supplementary

The Amarkian navy is rushing the two newly refitted Hebrinda-A class vessels to the GBZ to replace the damaged CAS Jolintoor and Odala.

DEVAS AND ASURAS
Chapter Three

Recommended Listening: "The Battle of the Ice"

Advisory: This chapter contains depictions of intense, close-quarters violence.

USS Kumari
Six Light-Minutes off Deva IX
Stardate 25152.7

"Ma'am, the Sydraxian cruisers have dropped shields on the side facing Endurance- I think they're beaming boarding parties over!"

"Understood." Jessica Rivers hid the fuming frustration and worry building in her gut.

She'd had her reasons for dividing her command in the face of the enemy. She'd expected a chaotic melee with no ship able to concentrate on another for long. Formation fighting had never been a Federation strength, and nothing she'd seen, read, or heard led her to expect it from the Sydraxians. But if the fight would be chaos, keeping one ship out of the fray to watch the others and exploit opportunities? She'd need that, as a reserve force.

And it had worked. Endurance's sniping fire had chewed up the shields of more than one of the Hierarchy ships, either directly or indirectly. But the price was leaving Chekov isolated. She'd bet on the Sydraxians being too busy to take advantage of that, she'd lost, and now they would pay.

Still, better a bunch of screaming commandos than another spread of those crude- but frighteningly effective- thermonuclear torpedoes. If the enemy wanted to board Chekov's ship, at least they had minutes, not seconds, before the Excelsior was mortally threatened. Minutes they could use. But how? Rivers felt her jaw twitch slightly, as she pondered the display. How to make the advantage Chekov had bought her count? Could they exploit that, hard enough to turn the tide of the battle, and bail the other Excelsior out of its disastrous troubles?

USS Endurance
Main Bridge
Moments Earlier

Pavel Chekov sucked in a deep breath as the Sydraxians milled about in the middle of their battle against the rest of Task Force One.

They'd brutally beaten his ship with massed fire. Endurance lolled in space, attitude thrusters stuttering in short sharp bursts to counteract plumes of boiling coolant from hull breaches. Entire sections were offline, though he desperately hoped that was damage to internal communications and not outright destruction of vast tracts of the hull. But he still had torpedoes, most of his phasers, some of his propulsion systems... The shield generators would be back on line soon enough. If the rest of the fleet could keep the Sydraxians from finishing the job-

ch'Vohrer cried from the backup tactical console, "Sir, their cruisers are lowering shields-" even as frinc Cheg at the main controls laid in a barrage of phaser strikes. On battery power and with some of the control lines cut, the Excelsior's fire lacked its usual ferocity, doing little more than skitter across the cruisers' armored hulls, leaving long burn scars but little damage.

"Picking up spikes of transporter energy!"

And within a heartbeat of those words, an armored soldier began to appear in a blue shimmer before Chekov's very eyes- only to double over, agonized. Ensign Melethdra had leapt from the helm console in that moment, drawn her smallsword, and leaned into the mass of sparkling motes. When the Sydraxian fully emerged from the transporter's unreality, he did so with a length of steel as long as his forearm already buried in- commingled with- his heart.

The Amarki drew her phaser and died, another Sydraxian's carefully aimed flechette gun raising a spray of blue-green blood from her chest and neck. Time seemed to stretch as Melethdra fell, and Chekov shouted an agonized curse. He'd had his phaser out and trained and firing, but the stunning beam shimmered harmlessly against the commando's heavy armor. The Sydraxian's flexible neck flicked around quickly and their eyes met. Then a second weapon warbled its song, Commander frinc Cheg adding the weight of his own stun-beam.

The commando's knees buckled from what fraction of the effect had leaked through armor plate, buying moments. Chekov's fingers might tremble now and then, but he knew exactly where to place them from half a century of practice as he set his phaser to kill. It was the old model, souped up in a few ways that had never made it into the books, and the captain's next shot left a blinding red-purple outline of disintegration where the Sydraxian used to stand.

Chekov hissed and nearly dropped the weapon; he'd forgotten how much heat the little old thing could generate at maximum power. He knelt, half expecting to have to pick the phaser up off the floor, but it didn't slip through his fingers after all. His decision took only an instant as his bridge crew traded energy beams against scattergun blasts at point blank range. We'll never be able to hold here, or control the ship even if we do. Sooner or later there'd be a second wave.

He flipped the hidden latch off a cover plate, made one adjustment- screamed again, as ricocheting flechettes chewed into and through his left leg, sending him sprawling to the deck. Scrabbling, the old man recovered the weapon. Removed a certain interlock dowel, made another adjustment, a third. Over his head, his bridge crew fought and died. Frinc Cheg screamed horribly, and it wouldn't stop- The main door slid open and a security team charged through, phasers at the ready. Soon the firing stopped.

Chekov dropped his gun and stopped gritting his teeth against the pain. This he must do. "Computer! Transfer control to Auxiliary Bridge! Bridge crew, evacuate!" The Starfleet officers around him heard the shout, and the computer's faint, calm "Acknowledged." A few moved as if to argue, but when they saw that he was wounded they changed their minds. Two security troopers moved to drape his arms over their shoulders and led him off the bridge.

Numbly, he allowed it- his eyes, though, dwelt on the wrack and ruin of officers and equipment.

USS Endurance
Deck Five Corridors

As he led his people to sickbay, Pavel Chekov had scraped together the bridge crew, the bridge module computer techs, and two medical orderlies. Even so, They had barely enough people- even counting walking wounded- to keep watch against the fireteams of roving enemy commandos, keep moving, and assist those unable to move themselves.

Especially not after the Sydraxian claymore mine went off, killing the security team's point man and wounding two other officers.

Ch'Vohrer limped along on his own feet now, refusing help and sweeping for more boobytraps. The Andorian was so mauled from his attempt to grapple with a Sydraxian commando that Chekov was amazed the lieutenant could stand, let alone operate a tricorder. But he couldn't afford to tell him to stop, as they trudged and staggered through corridors that were starting to fill with the smells of smoke and blood.

He could hear Commander T'Mela's crisp voice over the intercom; either the Sydraxians didn't know where Battle Bridge was, or they hadn't been able to get commandos into it. Grimly, he repeated the long-familiar process of thanking his stars for a Vulcan's implacable nerve in a crisis.

For a moment he longed for his old leaders, his old companions- then thought better of it. Perhaps it was best that it be him. The hapless young Russian. Not so young now- but in his bones and in his heritage, Pavel Chekov knew how to endure through red-handed chaos. McCoy, Sulu, Spock, the rest- they deserved better than to have to suffer this. They'd have done marvelously, that he knew... but this wasn't their kind of fight, not any of them.

And the new breed of officers, the ones who'd killed the Biophage and manned the frontier against the Cardassians? They had their virtues, too. Lieutenant Commander Chatsworth had, without a word, with seemingly total unconcern, quickened her pace to replace the team's point man. Holding her phaser in a posture straight out of a textbook, she fell into step with the security team.

Presumably, the communications officer had spotted the arm sticking out around the corner a split second fast. But only a split second- Ensign Zwicky shouted "DOWN! GRENADE!" even as the hissing whine of Chatsworth's sidearm split the air, and ended in an eerie silence. No explosion. For in that moment, grenade, arm, and hand had all vanished in a red flash of disintegration, annihilating the chemical explosives before they could detonate.

The silence was broken by armored commandos charging around the corner. Chatsworth took the first, her beam stepped back down to high heat, tracking out to sweep up and through his long, twisting neck. Two security men fired within moments, the net of deadly energies such that the next commando was disintegrated before he could fall. They turned their fire on the third and last- who was already writhing, his armored visor smoking from another burst from Chatsworth.

Chekov could not help but be surprised, even though he'd known this on some level, known since the counter-intrusion drills he'd ordered run just after the Cardassians hit Bajor.

He'd known this. He'd known. He just hadn't... grasped it when he came aboard.

The most capable pistolera on his ship was his communications officer. Not Security. Not Tactical, as often proved the case despite the difference between war in space and on the ground. No, it had been communications, of all things. The quiet, asocial, electronics wizard. The standoffish officer with the clipped, severe voice, the one he couldn't help but imagine shushing library patrons. Sometimes he half expected her ears to sprout points- but in all honesty, most of the Vulcans he'd known were friendlier, once you got to know them.

And she might just have saved all their lives.

Gritting his teeth, Chekov gasped, "KEEP... GOING!" Sickbay was defensible- at least, so far as any place could be defended against this.

Chekov rounded the corner they'd just fought their way around, bolstered by a barrel-chested Vulcan. The computer technician gripped his shoulder with casual strength, like a machine press trying to be gentle, supporting his captain even as he carried Commander frinc Cheg slung under his other shoulder like a parcel.

All the Vulcans among their motley band were helping wounded, now, whatever they'd been doing before, whatever their specialization. Anyone could fire a phaser or scan for explosive boobytraps. Only a Vulcan could handle two or three wounded men with no more trouble than a human would have with one.

Looking at the alien, Chekov couldn't decide if the first commando, the one with the grenade, had been lucky or not. The disintegration blast had only taken the Sydraxian's arm. Chekov watched, realizing that the seeming twitches of the commando's right hand were not purposeless, but truly were reaching for some device- but even as he took breath to shout an alarm, the commando vanished in a shower of blue swirling sparks. Beamed up, beamed away to some Sydraxian ship that must be hovering like a vulture outside his own.

It hadn't only been the descent on the bridge, then. The Sydraxians must be using their transporters for more than just a round of boarding attacks.

Unbidden, his mind threw images of the enemy commandos appearing out of nowhere, vanishing as his security teams reached them. The attack on the bridge might have been a fight to the death, but the Hierarchy's ground troops weren't stupid. They would know an Excelsior's crew had the advantage of numbers, and better knowledge of the ship. But with Endurance's shields still firmly down, the Hierarchy troops could move about the ship and concentrate their forces at will, whittling away his people one attack at a time and vanishing whenever they met more resistance than their objective was worth.

The blood of his crew, draining from a hundred cuts...

Smoke and burnt flesh were stronger smells, now; distant explosions and the sounds of weapons fire echoed along the corridors through the glare of emergency lights.

His mind was wandering. Focus! He wracked his brains, trying to recollect things that could be done to defeat a teleporting enemy, things within the skills of the people he had left...

Omake - Shipyard Survey - Vehrec
I would like to offer a thought. Been thinking about an ancient, derelict, asteroid-base used by the Orion empire but I couldn't come up with a name...until I remembered The Last Orion.

Suitable sites for Shipyards in the Orion Union: New Construction
(An excerpt from Lieutenant Xia Wu's reports.)
Subsection 2-1 Summary
  • Loknar Tamash is a planetoid approximately 209x250 kilometers in size-it is primarily composed of nickel-iron, and was extensively mined for Duranium by the Orion Empire.
  • These mining operations, in time, expanded into a vast shipyard, built inside and exterior to the original asteroid.
  • Said shipyard was ultimately left to decline due to official neglect, warring Hypercorps, and multiple invaders, and finally, Syndicate salvage teams.
  • Very little is left, but the site itself is centrally located and accessible, with multiple sites for heavy industry, critical sub-component assembly, and assembly yards.

Loknar Tamash is a minor planetoid with an ellipsoid shape, measuring 209 by 249.4 kilometers in it's minor and major axis, in the Alukk system with a storied, but faded history. Records of it's operations are vague and distorted by legend, destruction, and the actions of salvagers and the Hur'q, but it was once the greatest warp core foundry and shipyard of the entire Orion Empire. Huge Duranium reserves, though played out over a millennia ago, provided the initial impetuous to mine the asteroid-ore refining and smelting operations were soon moved to it as well, and before long, entire habitats were growing on and inside the asteroid. The largest mines, though long abandoned, still pock the surface of the asteroid, hollowing out a side and held open by huge girders to prevent the collapse of the entire edifice. These stark structural elements are all that remains today of the once imposing structure.

Our best picture of Loknar Tamash dates from approximately 920, shortly before the first outbreak of war between the Imperial government and the Hypercorperations. Unlike most shipyards at the time, it was owned jointly by several Hypercorps, each of whom profited from the others and compettion was actually fierce for contracts and employees. At this stage, Loknar Tamash swallowed the resources of an empire about the size of the Klingon's holdings in the 2250s, and brought forth from it's yards a myriad of civilian, quasi-military, and purely martial ships. Accordingly, our picture is of a vast, urban-industrial complex, sprawling across the surface of the asteroid, and connected via huge boom arms to orbital platforms like squat space elevators. Domes cover entire towns, or huge arcologies burrow into the surface. Most interesting of all, hundred-kilometer structures trail from one end of the complex, their purpose unclear even now. The onset of the Colony Wars, and subsequent battles for supremacy, saw this station greatly reduced in size, population, and productivity. In 920, Loknar Tamash may have had 5 Capital Ship berths and at least twice as many Warbird berths, but by 1100, perhaps only one warbird berth was still in operation. The Hur'q temporarily restored some facilities, only to strip bare the entire operation around in the 1300s and remove even the bolts from the walls. So complete was this salvage operation, and subsequent scouring by the Orion Syndicate, that very little historical structure has been left, and only the holes indicating where fasteners were once attached testifies to Loknar Tamash's size and industrial power. (see Appendix 3 for an speculative 'reconstruction' of the facility and a comparison to current yards.)

For the Federation however, Loknar Tamash offers an interesting possibility. It is one of the few sites within the Orion Union where a suitable shipyard site exists that is not already claimed by a cooperate or government agency. It is large-very large, too large for the Orion Union's needs in fact. This is why, despite it's obvious prestige, no effort has been made to reclaim it for the Orions. Distance also plays a role-Loknar Tamash is rather distant from Alukk, and it would be necessary to build the tools to to build the tools to build the ships-and building accommodations for hundreds and thousands of workers would also be required. With no nearby planet to base efforts from, for industrial work and defense, initial setup and defensive measures will necessarily be more expensive. Even with the best minefields and defense stations guarding it, Loknar Tamash is a poor defensive position. But when it is deep within the Federation, a weak defense against direct attack matters far less. Restarting operations at Loknar Tamash would take a huge effort-but it could easily become second only to Utopia Planitia, and it's central location allows for shorter logistical lines to certain colonies. (Appendix 4 is a tentative schedule for reconstruction and expansion, based on early plans by the Orion Union to reconstruct the original facilities, and Starfleet's expansion priorities.)
