I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

I think only the first brana recruitment needed a separate roll, and the success and precedent of it meant they are now included in the roll of potential recruits we get. My read on that might be wrong though.

[Semi Canon] An Apprentice in Need, +15 to a Roll, Eilifr Ori of Clan Flamespitter exists, master undecided.
An Apprentice in Need

Eilífr examined the armor he'd created, cringing internally. Not, not, because it was not to par. It was fine. The best he could do, in fact. Which isn't saying much, for somebody not before his 30th birthday, but still. No, what annoys him is not that his elders might find flaws with his work. He is mortal, he is young, he expects it, has lived long enough to know he will somehow always disappoint his parents, disappoint his mother and his father alike. He knows the jeers and insults, wine-drinker, beanpole, worse waiting for him.

No.

What angered him is that it is not its actual flaws that will anger those who see it, but instead the fact that it is, in any sense, out of the ordinary, unusual, strange to their eyes and therefore innately unworthy.

What annoys him is that they will ignore the armor he has created for what it is rather than what is actually wrong with it.

A long coat of cured, hardened leather scale from a beast the elves call the Trickster Serpent, a grand snake in the dark lands of Naggaryth, harvested after the beast sheds its skin. Not lightly to be trifled with, but not a true man eater either. The elf he had first bought it from, an apprentice Shadow Weaver himself, had challenged him to a drinking contest for the secret of the stuff, how to harden it into proper leather.

He had lost.

So he had paid the elf in another way for such knowledge, the story of his grandfather's actions in the Incursion. For such was the elf's clan's interest, in the War, on all fronts and in all places, to understand all who had shed their blood facing down the enemy. They spoke of the deeds of Dwarf and of elf and of powers aside, giving everything, giving anything, to stop the enemy.

And so he had stretched it over the the mannequin, tailoring it specifically to his own shape, for the mixture, you see, the mixture made it hard, all but unworkable. And when it would fit over his body like a second skin, when it would keep his limbs and chest and everything safe, a long, dangling coat down to the knees. Then he had painted the mixture, a particularly noxious mixture of vinegar, ground bark, salts and more that had cured the thing for seven days and seven nights. When it was done it could stop an arrow, or a sling's bullet, or a sword stroke; a good Fimir blow could carve through it, aye, but the same was true for anything short of Gromril, and particularly thick Gromril at that.

But he was young, not an idiot, Eilífr was. So he had made something else too, a cuirass of lamella made of hard bone bound together with sinew, all of it taken from the bodies of harvested trolls, the slimmest pickings taken, the little not already claimed by elder craftsmen. That had been much more straightforward, but still painfully time consuming, hours upon hours spent making sure there was not a gap to exploit. Not a flaw to look at. Nothing wrong.

Except that it was not Gromril. Except that it was not metal.

Except. Except. Except.

He sighed, ran his fingers through his hair, and put himself to oiling it.

Ale flowed like water, music played, and people talked. Of course they talked.

But not about him. Never about him. Did it matter that the hammer had glowed, shown that Thungni's blood ran true, that he had the gift? No. No of course not. Why would it, when his back-up piece had been so strange? Why wouldn't the Runesmiths swarm his kinsmen, his usual, average, so very dwarf-

"Now that is an oddity."

He whirled around as he heard the woman's voice speak, running her fingers over the hard scale. Her plaits were long and intricately braided, still brown as good strong ale, a hammer at her waist and thick robes swathed around a form thick with muscle. Even morose, brooding, sour he knew at that moment who she was, well enough at least, Snerra the Smiling Maiden, Snerra who saved a king, Snerra greatest damn Runesmith in all of Krakka Drakk. He bowed deep at the waist to her, as was only right and proper. "Honored Elder, thank you for your time." He noticed her guard glaring at him then too.

She ran her fingers over the scales, over the bones, over it all, trying to figure out if there was even the slightest flaw in the armor, examining it with a critical eye. "Acceptable, if not exemplary, for one of your age." She looked at him out of the corner of her eye. "What inspired it? Talking with elves, I suppose?"

In spite of much, in spite of the reverence of age, the crushing youth, the trepidation, he felt his gorm rise up in that moment though he quashed it down. "You may ask my parents, Honored Elder," and Ancestors wasn't that the truth, they'd more than gossip about their son to anyone who asked, "I have had a penchant for leatherwork and organic materials long before I so much as laid eyes on an Elgi, by my beard."

"By your beard, hm?" She smiled a little then. "I believe you, but that still didn't answer the question."

"...I wish I could tell you that I had a friend who was a Ranger, or some Brana who needed adequate work, or some Ancestor who passed it along, but in full honesty, Honored Elder, all I can tell you is that I had the predeliction for it, found working with it suited me." Same as he had a prediliction for wine, Brana or Elf alike; and the shining sun overhead, fierce and bright; and much more aside. "The quickness, the haste it allows, I suppose you could say it appeals to me; but I am honest enough to admit I would practice it even if it gained me nothing."

"Well!" She clapped, smiling the more. "I respect honesty. Enjoy the festivities, beardling."

Eilífr Ori of Clan Flamespitter woke the next morning feeling somehow more tired than when he had gone to sleep, after a long, lonesome night of tossing and turning as he tried to forget the rest of that long, boring night. He heard his parents and a voice he could only dimly recognize as he dressed and prepared to go down for breakfast, brushing it off then, for that time.

His eyes still widened as he saw Snerra speaking with his parents, hastily bowing at the waist as she turned to him. "Good. You're awake." She nodded to his parents and then turned back to him. "You have the Gift, and I'd hate to see that potential squandered, either by your or by Masters who refuse to recognize it. I can't promise the work will be easy, that there will be no challenges, that nothing can go wrong; but I can promise, if you start the path, if you follow it through, there will be honor enough and acclaim even for you, beardling. If you accept."

What else was there to say?

[AU] Snorri (Ruler) FATE Charsheet 2, +10 to a Roll

Snorri Klausson (Ruler)

Art by Renu

Director Goredolf,

We've managed to summon some more help. Mathilde might still be pressing us, but at the very least we've summoned one of the greater Dwarfs to ever walk this Lostworld. He reminds me somewhat of the Fairies of Britain, too much even for my comfort. He is all dedicated to craft...and to vengeance. The Grudge weighs heavy on him; we are fortunate he does not seek our blood, yet. One of the greater Runelord of the Golden Age, which is not a small group, this particular incarnation of Snorri walks and talks and fights as a relation of Thungni over all else. The one who founded Khazagar, the one who looks to the future.

-Ritsuko Fujimaru

Because as much as you appreciate practicality, and fully well know that there are better, more effective Runes for this door, the message sent by your actions is sometimes just as important.
Class: Ruler, 5 Star
-Snorri himself is not sure how many classes he could be summoned as, the amount of mana required to summon him being...prodigious. Likely less than Weber, at least, but in return each would be a mighty force to face. You can ask Cu, we are sure he can be summoned as Caster and the weight of an Avenger rests on him; but other than, it will be a learning experience for us.

Titles: Runelord of Kraka Drakk, The Gift Giver, Founder of Khazagar, Burudin Member, The Greed Slayer, The Earth Mover, Shadowkiller, Hold Warder, Eldest Runelord of the North, Grimunbakazi a Dum (Unyielding Breaker of Darkness), Azrilgromthi a Vengryn (Silver Ancestor of Vengeance), He Who Gives Gifts and Quiets the Winds, Elder Windstiller, Chainwright, The Scarred.

Alignment: Lawful Good

Attribute: Sky

Parameters:
Strength: A+
Endurance: EX
Agility: D
Mana: E
Luck: C
Noble Phantasm: A+

Class Skills:
Magic Resistance: EX
-He throttles magic everywhere he goes, freezing the Winds, burning away at Mana, with but a simple thought unmaking all that is mysticism.

Item Construction: A

-The Snorri that most deeply plunged into craft, the one who learned the deepest lore, the one who followed the Runemetal. He lacks the flair for integrating Elf and Brana lore into his craft that the Caster wields so easily, but he is second to none in wielding what was passed along by Thungni.

Territory Creation: A

-The Snorri most deeply tied into Khazagar as an idea, the Snorri that made it his legend, the Snorri who shaped Krakka Drakk, that Snorri, most firmly exists as a Ruler.

Divinity: C

-
The Snorri that most leans on his relation to Thungni, enhanced by the fact that he runs around covered in their Runes, he bears a fragment of the power of the gods with him. This has proven itself both blade and shield before.

Personal Skills:

The Ever Thirsting Armor: A

-
Barak Azamar, a superb suit of hyper-hardened armor fed the Greedy One's heart to have truly infinite power. Only a truly exemplary blade can hope to pierce it, and that only with luck; and it provides the power he requires for his more impressive Noble Phantasm.

Old Weathered Wisdom: B

-Wisdom passed along from the Ancestors, from his Master, from his mother, from a million and one different sources, has given him a broader understanding of the world. Age is wisdom, after all.

The Gift Giver: C

-
He is the gift giver no matter what. Not quite the purest encapsulation of that portion of his personality, but good enough.

Noble Phantasms:
Khazagar( The Hall of Infinite Miracles)
Rank: EX
Buff
Range: 100
Targets: 1000

He summons Khazaghar, the great hall of learning. His allies' weapons and armor, their noble phantasms, are given temporary runic effects that make them even more effective and potent, while the enemy is weakened, their magic shattered and their noble phantasms drained of power to feed it; further, he can enter its halls to locate some strange arcane and esoteric halls. This is a copy of Khazaghar as it existed in Snorri's own time and not the institution itself, currently still standing defiant in Krakka Drakk.

Barak Azamar( The Mountain Cannot Kneel Before the Wind)
Rank: B
Buff
Range: Personal
Targets: 1

-Barak Azamar was so tighly woven into the legend of Snorri Klausson, the Gift-Giver, that it is likely all permutations have this Noble Phantasm; however, what they effectively turn it towards, aside from generally being very good armor, likely varies considerably. In the Ruler's case it powers Khazaghar, ensuring Snorri is capable of anything at all outside of summoning it.

Personality: Surly, cantankerous, gerontocratic, conservative, and more; but also wise, giving, generous, industrious and honorable. A streak of vengefullness certainly runs through him as well, a desire to soothe the Grudge, though less so than his more modern kin. Grandfatherly, and many of the younger servants I have summoned seem to flock to him for the toys he seems to produce from nowhere.

I have never felt such a bemusing mixture of exasperated and grateful to a man in my life. He regards forty, fifty year olds as barely grown, only just outside of adolescence; consider, then, how he regards me, on the younger side of my twenties? Never have I been so consistently insulted; but never have I recieved such aid before this, short I suppose of Raikou.

Relationships

Karna (Santa)

"Give until you drop, aye?"

The Hero of Benefaction has aided him in distributing toys to the youths now about us and around us, modifying his Saint Graph in accordance with the same modifications he made during Christmas.

First Hassan

"…And seek God's forgiveness! Truly God is much forgiving and Merciful."

"Mine aren't."

The champion of a merciful God, indeed perhaps the last mercy that can be offered, The Old Man of the Mountains fights the Old Mountain of a Man for his love of the Grudge, of perdition, of vengeance without hope of pity or mercy or compassion; even the black blade of Azrael is mercy, in its own way.

Cu (Caster)

"...Wait, that should make that blow up..."

Having realized that at least the Runes which Cu wields were independently discovered, and at most that they arise from a similar but fundamentally different process, Snorri works well with him to try and understand the Runes.

Let me think...

Berserker - definitely, from the time when he lost his wife. Even more durable than the Ruler, but lesser runic stuff

Saber - probably not. For comparison (I don't know how strict FATE is on the "saber must be swordsman" thing), Otrek the first Kraka Drakk king would definitely be a Saber in addition to being a ruler (so long as they aren't too strict about the sword thing)

Lancer/Archer - definitely at least one of these two, given his penchant for hunting down the nastiest enemies (Greedy Troll, Meargh, those corrupted Dragons...). Maybe even both, depending on how much his Shadowkiller Title, Brana-tossing and Ash Storm feature into his legend. He wouldn't be the fastest of either class - indeed he'd probably rank among the slowest - but he'd be at the top of the mountain for hitting power.
EDIT 3: worth noting that Archer would probably have a crossbow with bolts styled after the Bolt Thrower and Grudge Bolt he used to weaken Kholek Suneater as standard equipment - may or may not be a skill, would not be a Noble Phantasm.

Assassin - definitely not.

Beast - needs special mention because as he is now, absolutely not. But in an alternate universe where our lovely noperopes go out of control, or he fucks up a waystone...

EDIT: concerning how the Ash Storm interacts with his legend, I file that under Archer instead of Caster for much the same reason that Oda Nobunaga has an assload of firearms - it's a singular projectile weapon (though a very wide area one) that, once forged, does not particularly require further Caster-Casting to make it work. Also because he has a particular legend to his name that is more appropriate to Caster - namely the Storm of Magic he survived.

EDIT 2: damn it, now this is really sparking my munchkin creative juices. What ability would each Class of Snorri have? Note that all names and concepts are subject to being transmuted into the nearest FATE equivalent if they need to be, I don't know enough about FATE to say for certain.

All of them will have some level of Magic Resistance, Item Construction, and The Gift Giver, though that last one might get twisted into something unwholesome depending on Class.

Avenger - His primary ability would be that ring of his (can't recall the name) which would be powered up by the Avenger class. His noble phantasm would be This Far And No Further - a host of ghostly Hearthguard, at their prime in equipment but mangled and battered, appear to assault and contain the target of Snorri's wrath. Should the poor bastard in question manage to survive the combined attentions of them and Snorri, a final assault will occur in which the ground shatters open under them, dropping them and Snorri into a volcanic pit garnished by runefire and floating shards of Voidstone. This mimics the combined legends of the slaughter of the Greedy Troll and the lesser legends of his Hearth Guard.

Berserker - His primary ability would be Forever Broken - even as his equipment repeatedly shatters and renews under the weight of combat, each crack and tear is fed into Snorri's blows; they are not necessarily made stronger, but they slowly destroy nearby enemy equipment and obstructions. His Noble Phantasm is The Grudge, a sort of karmic judgement that applies an immense but incorporeal weight to the victim, greatly hindering servants and outright crushing lesser beings into paste. The worse the victim's karma, the greater this weight is. Not the strongest skills in and of themselves, but The Grudge is lent a fair bit of power by the general Dwarven concept and cultural history.

Caster - His primary ability is Forged in the Storm; any rune he knows that can be applied to two or more Runic Item Categories, he can cast in thin air without needing to embed them in items though they'll still consume mana and the effects might vary without the boundaries of an item to contain them. His Noble Phantasm is Herald of the Warp-Storm; extremely dangerous and not at all to be used lightly, even more so than the vast majority of other Phantasms, this ability quite literally recreates the effect of the Storm of Magic he used to forge his cloak complete with spontaneously spawning Incarnate Wind Elementals and empowering his Runes potentially beyond their ability to survive or be safely handled. The actual power and magnitude of this is dependent on how much mana is available, but even in mana-lacking environments it's nothing to sneer at.

Lancer/Archer - His primary ability is Dismantling - the more valuable the body parts/equipment of his target is as it relates to making Runes, the more precise his strikes and the more likely he is to disembowel/dismember them. His Noble Phantasm as a Lancer is Branakroki, where a small swarm of Brana (maybe a score or so) of random Winds and equipment appear from nowhere in the near vicinity to assault and slaughter his foes. His Archer Noble Phantasm is City-Killer, where he summons his Ash Storm at maximum power and can control it to a fairly impressive degree.

I'm honestly just surprised he takes less mana to summon than Mathilde.
I believe that was saying he can be summoned as less classes than Mathilde, not Mana requirements. Took me a second to parse, myself.

But yeah, getting airdropped by Brana is definitely enough for a Rider option. Riders go in for minions, so his golem shadow would definitely show up for it.

I thought that you needed Gromril to draw out the full power of Armour Runes? I mean, there is that wood that has flecks of Gromril in it which can partially bear Armour Runes, but getting leather infused with gromril seems difficult.
Yep this is currently where armor runes are at. Non gromril armor will explode if you put armor runes on them. Stuff like Azrilwut with gromril flecks will not explode but will be underpowered. The current solution for light armor is to wear gromril chain which takes runes just fine and the rangers seem fine with that.

Hm... I suspect that if we're going to put armor runes on non-gromril armor without it blowing up, it probably involves the The Movement Of Things or The Rune Metal trees. Both of which are, if I recall correctly, basically waiting for us to do Extrasensory so that we can actually see what the magic is doing to a more thorough degree.

Yeah I think step 1 is figuring out why exactly armor runes are so picky and blow up so easily which will take runesight, probably part 2 or 3 of ESP. It might be possible after that to invent an entire new category of runes that are lower in power than armor runes but can be put on non gromril armor. Not sure it would make much difference though since anyone who can afford to rune their armor can likely afford gromril armor or at least chain.

I guess it would be more cheap or more market available to those who are not Dawi. I think the runes would enchant and not empower a given thing. Like, they would enchant already existing qualities of the item without adding very new ones that would destroy the structure of the item. Like, it would add less and at the same time more, even possibly give a chance to write multiple runes on higher-quality stuff, which would be a great step to discover how to write multiple master runes.

[AU] Snorri (Avenger) FATE Charsheet, +10 to a Roll

Snorri Klausson (Avenger)

Art by Renu

Director Goredolf,

Yet another of Snorri Klausson's Saint Graphs comes to us, bringing with him a prophecy of doom and ruination. A great Champion of the Fimir rises up to aid the Reborn Prince in his struggle to cast this Lostworld into darkness; another foeman comes upon us seeking our blood; another enemy desires our bloodshed. And our enemies are intertwined. The Snorri that most seeks vengeance, blood, death, the Grudge Price paid; the one who broke eight into seven after they took his wife from him. An echo, a long, mournful note, crying out into the world because it cannot fade. All that is vengeful in him, finds itself cast into this incarnation, this Class; if there is anything left for the Berserker, it would not be much.

-Ritsuko Fujimaru

They're trying to run from him.

A fool's notion.

The storm responds to his simmering fury, roiling and releasing a wave of lightning that illuminates the clouds to reveal the dark outline of the enemy outside his storm as clear as day. He adjusts his movements accordingly, sprinting with limbs that do not tire, and a body that has escaped the constraints of mere flesh.

Do they think to escape him? To escape the consequence of their death-dealing and malice?

Bah.

Class: Avenger, 5 Star
-It is no great shock to discover that a Dwarf is an Avenger, given how much importance they place on their Grudges. However, even by Dwarf standards Snorri's capacity for violence to soothe his (supposedly innate) need for vengeance, to soothe the Grudge, to clear his mind and soothe what has been taken from him; enough that he now may channel his relation to Grungni, High King and creator of the Great Book of Grudges, much as the Ruler channels his relation to Thungni.

Parameters:
Strength: A++
Endurance: EX
Agility: D
Mana: E
Luck: D
Noble Phantasm: A+

Class Skills:
Magic Resistance: EX

-Magic withers and dies and falls before him, freezing it all before it is all burned away in the fires of his rage, his anger, his deep and primordial fury against a world that does him wrong; by that same token however, it fluctuates considerably, always potent but the more he rages against the enemy and seeks Vengeance the more potent it is. I fully believe that if given an order opposite enough to him, he could ignore my Command Seals.

Item Construction: B

-He tossed away some of his ability to create, some of his love of craft, some of his wisdom, to become a more potent slayer of all things, a more able killer and tool of vengeance. At this level, he is locked only to violent, warring, creations, things of pure violence; but in return they are very good at unleashing violence.

Self-Restoration: A+

-Combine his already obscene vitality, his stubborn willingness to endure all things, his connection to Barak Azamar, and you find a living font of Mana, though he cannot use most of it; or rather, it is spent ensuring his other Noble Phantasm functions properly and in allowing him to survive it rather than to be killed by it.

Divinity: C

-Descended from Grungni through Thungni, he is the right hand of his Grandfather; the one who wages war in the name of vengeance and the High King, the one who brings destruction and ash in its purest, most potent form.

Personal Skills:

The Unbreaking Armor: A

-
Barak Azamar, as with Ruler, effects Snorri in two ways, fed Mana to power him. Much as the Ruler, it is itself a hard, strong, good piece of metal strong as the mountains that are not cleaved; more importantly, it always turns him into stone, while the Ruler form does so only at his command so that he may endure what he unleashes.
Mystic Slayer: A

-One who permanently killed a Daemon, one who saw Hashut broken like a cheap twig, who slew the Fimir Meargh and Balefiends like so many flies, who undoes magic with his very presence. At this rank, his very presence is enough to weaken demons and monsters of all sorts as few short of Raikou ever have.

This Far, No Farther: EX

-A unique permutation of battle continuation, reflective of his never-ending need for vengeance. Against all foes even if wounded he would get back up to take his vengeance, his fury, his hate. Against the wicked, his blows burn like bright fire and hot steel and the very sun itself unleashed to burn those who harm him. His very presence itself rejects the Beasts, weakening them in all cases, making them lesser, weaker, unworthy of their own power.

Noble Phantasms:
Skarrenbakraz( Fire Inside, Storm Outside)
Rank: A++
Anti-Army
Range: 100
Targets: 1000

He unleashes Skarrenbakraz, a cloak that summons forth a storm equal to the rage of Zeus. It cloaks him, sheathes him, turns him into a walking volanic eruption. Aside from a truly stupendous mana cost, its biggest drawback is that it has no comprehension of friend or foe, striking both, making it less than optimal when the enemy lurks within Altdorf itself waiting its own opportunity for vengeance. For now he is put to work spoling the attempts to march an army of beastmen from the forests.

Barak Azamar( The Mountain Cannot Kneel Before the Wind)
Rank: A

Skarrenbakraz does not require quite as much mana as Khazagar, and in return Avenger has powered it up such that he always has flesh of stone. He can feed it even more Mana to acquire a level of protection not quite equal to that which Artoria Caster used during our incursion into Lostbelt 6, nor as wide ranging, but sufficient that raw power will not harm him for a time.

Personality: Brusque and businesslike, the embodiment of Snorri Klausson's desire to avenge the Grudges he accrued over his long, long, long life. There is little if any of the doting grandfather or skillful craftsman of Ruler or Caster, at least at first glance. His energy he turns towards destroying the foe.

Because he loves his people. Because he loves his wife. Because the world will continue to do wrong to him unless he strikes at it first. Let him begin speaking to Raikou, let him take off the mask and walk as a man again and his acts become more understandable. His soft spot is further emphasized around children and their parents, for instance crafting fine clothes for Jack.

Relationships

Ibaraki Douji

"What is that...thing...doing here?"

Snorri hates Demons, and Ibaraki is no exception. The two contest each other's will often, glaring and tossing hateful comments when they believe I am not paying attention. Snorri considers himself honorbound, and there is just enough difference between the daemons of his world and the Oni, to stay his hammer; while for her part, Ibaraki quite apart from anything else is aware her odds are not good enough until and unless Shuten appears.

Raikou (Berserker)

"...If you love him, move, before the world moves upon you..."

Bound by a shared love of killing demons, parental aspect, and parentage from the god of lightning, Raikou and Snorri have bonded quickly and easily with each other. She speaks with him often, and he with her, and the two share old war stories, tales of the youths they raised, and general advise with each other.

David

"Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him."

"If there is no vengeance then there can be no justice and all wrong-doers shall not know what they have earned."

The God of Abraham is a God of mercy, even to those that transgress; even to David, who failed and rose and failed and rose many times did he show mercy. Something about this bleak figure of murder and vengeance, for whom there is no mercy, no pity, only blood spilled and the book crossed out, has driven David to argue and fight and abhor them; and Snorri, whose heart is vengeance and grudge, takes as much offence to that soft at heart notion.
