On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Have you forgotten that each turn is 10 years? A century is 10 turns.

Clearly I haven't which is why I disputed your five turns time line, ignoring for the moment we're going to likely take 5-10 turns to make the place to begin with it wont be for at least 15-20 turns from this point that any changes can realistically be made.

I will reiterate for everyone in the thread. TREAT THE MAXIMUMS CAP AS A HARD LIMIT UNTIL I SAY OTHERWISE, and when I say it won't change for a while I do mean a while. Changing or adding Services to the Workshop, even if it's every few centuries, says just as much as taking all the Services you want at the beginning and then chilling for a thousand years. It's up to you to decide which is better.

This is why I'm saying the timeline would be centuries plural, because that's the way Soulcake talks about it.

When considering IC vs OOC time passage and whether or not something will ever happen in the life of the quest one should also take into account that has the quest advances it grows more elaborate. Turn 46 has a lot more stuff in it and say turn 2 and turn 100 if we ever get there will take even longer. Personally I do not think it is reasonable to assume that any improvements will be made to the number of Maximums in the span of the quest and will be voting accordingly

Indeed, as quests get older and more elaborate the update rate slows down commensurately. The next 48 turns will almost certainly take longer than two years real time.

That's fair, I'd like the whole-hog plan considering that but I'm too worried about Snorri's mental health to go for it.

It's part of why, but the other reason is that I do want the maximum library and so getting there piece meal involves a much larger standing hit, where as if we did it now it's just a -1 and no effect on the radical side where as if we do it piecemeal it's -2 to conservatives and -1 to radicals and that's assuming we don't eventually bump the other services up.

Yeah. This is also why I'm treating this as a now or never vote.

I've heard "We'll get to it eventually" far too many times.

Rune Metal, Movement of Things, Finishing the Chainforger, dozens of proposed projects like the Banner for the Temple of Valaya.

Unless we commit to it now its never going to happen.

To be fair, those projects are slowly coming into focus over time. Other completed projects knock action cost off of those, so eventually they will become cheap enough for the thread to be willing to commit.

But the same is not true of building a library, the time to improvement is just that time, there would be no way to chip away at it, just a long wait for an indeterminate span of turns.

I must say some opinions stated strike me as odd.

Sometimes it seems that some of you want the quest to change as much as possible as soon as possible.
Or to change the Dwarven race as much as possible as soon as possible.
Or to change all runesmiths (not runecraft, but just the guild and how people act within it) as soon as possible.

This seems odd to me. We're playing as a Dwarf and having a lovely time with this quest. Certainly a large part of that is how different Dwarves are from Humans. It definitely is for me at the very least.
One of the aspects of this are the cultural differences. Dwarves are slow to trust and slower to change. I think the mentorship and the way runecraft is passed on through the millennia has some real charm. I really really like it.

So to my point: Why do so many plans have so many votes to the maximum of what Snorri would take? In clear terms, these are mechanical limits Soulcake has had to introduce to make sure people don't act too out of character. Instead of treating them like these, people treat them as limits to overcome. Goals to accomplish as soon as possible, even beyond this vote people are speaking of 'the decades until we can do x' or 'the centuries until we have accomplished y'.
I would urge people who find themselves feeling like this to consider why it is they want this, and what these reasons have to do with what Snorri wants.

In addition, while it is sort of etiquette to pretend all previous votes were unanimous and everyone in the thread agrees with all previous won votes. Reality is that this can't possibly be the case. It is normal and expected for people who really pushed or believed in other options on previous votes not to bring it up. In exchange, I think it would be kind if everyone who did believe in the vote that won, to take into account the opinions of the voters who lost the last votes.

I'll shut up now, but I really feel quite strongly about this. Please don't just use this quest to encourage and accomplish your own wishes. Let's instead use it in a way that has everyone here have the most fun. (Not that I believe some of you want others not to have fun, I definitely don't mean that and I apologize if it comes across in that way)

Rune Metal, Movement of Things, Finishing the Chainforger
Those are all in progress though. We can't ignore everything else to monofocus for 10 turns, for those we reach a significant "breakpoint" and shift angles for a bit. Look I get that you're bitter about the gronti but this constant disingenuous doomposting about how we're incapable of finishing projects and we'll never return to this one is getting old.
Edit: for that matter I don't think Soul would actually let us monofocus, say, Rune Metal turn after turn until we've completely exhausted it. He'd likely find some way to turn us away from it.

Finishing the Chainforger
Did anyone ever want to go further? We hit pretty much all our goals when we started that. Beyond many of them. We stopped researching this because we felt it was plenty for our purposes.
Aren't the only people who advocate for the next step just the people who are obsessive about 'completing' tech trees?

Apart from standing cost the other big thing of making library now is that we cant reach T3 learning and waiting until 20 Turns before reaching it means dwarfs spend more time learning under us when they can other things like making runic items or doing research.

Its better to have Com and learning max right out of the gate to show just how great rhus wonder is when it cones to runesmiths.

... Dangit I popped in thread to read the omake and, I skimmed the Comments to See people talking about it. But It only got mentioned a few times. Thanks Soulcake for the continued non cannon storyline. I enjoyed it. But I'm very disapointed that The Thread didn't even take a break in the Agruments about Dwarf Books, to Comment on the Story.

Nah snorri wants gromril chain to be affordable to normal metalsmiths before considering it complete IC abd doing so would also finish chainwrights achievement probably making t5 and showing the bonus.

I'd like to see it finished, because Brok is waiting on us to finish it, but it's not something that needs doing right this moment and I can also see Akazit playing a part. Plus we just finished a large milestone for the chain whereas all those elf books have been sitting there for a while.

Some people did, but it both wasn't too large of an update and didn't add too much beyond Kharsta's descendants being there.

Given that their canon fate was shameful demise by inches as they all collectively decided to commit mass suicide ('Age of Vengeance') I would say that most people in the fandom have some inclination to change it yes. Now you can have a different tolerance for what is acceptable change, but for those changes that are acceptable why would you not want to make them as fast as possible so we can actually see the results. I find the idea of 'going slow' not as a means to an end, but as part of the end kind of hard to understand personally.

It's etiquette to prevent bitter feelings and fights breaking out amongst the players. If people didn't pretend like that every time anything went wrong people would be screeching in the comments about how they were right and try to lynch the rest of the thread. It's better for everyone to maintain the keyfabe.

So we have four plans that are clearly in the lead. Will be interesting to see which one will win by the end.

  • [X] Plan Books and Runesmiths Do Not Mix
    -[X] Food:
-- [X] Extravagant: +3 actions. +5 Size. +3 Learning. +2 Communication. You'll provide a wide variety of fine ales and food, though that will necessitate the hiring of a handful of Chefs as well. Multiple Halls are dedicated to serving as dining spaces, with separate eating areas for smaller gatherings as well.
    -[X] Lodgings:
-- [X] Extravagant: +4 actions, +7 Size, +2 Learning and Communication. Rooms big enough to be considered rather well off, with enough of them to comfortably fit the entire population of the town and then some. Such a scale would doubtlessly need grand galleries with enough levels that only the mightiest Clan Halls are larger in scope. A Karak in miniature. Plenty of room and plenty of rooms for people to simply loiter around and chat.
    -[X] Shopping:
-- [X] Extravagant: +3 actions, +6 Size, +3 Learning and Communication, Requires Exceptional Lodgings at minimum. Using Jorri's numerous contacts and speaking with the inhabitants in Khazid Okraz you could probably set up a reagent market to provide a wide array of more basic reagents within the Workshop. It would be of no benefit to you, but it would mean those learning under you need not go far to gather the reagents they need. Which means they spend more time learning and less time futzing about.
    -[X] Defenses:
-- [X] Marvellous: +5 actions, +12 Size, Requires Extravagant Lodgings at minimum, Unlocks Capstone Project write-in vote, +1 Conservative and Radical Runesmith Standing. Insane? Maybe to some. Secure? Beyond question. Almost enough to make you think more can't be done, almost. As before, but even Grander. Great Artillery pieces capable of shooting wyverns from the sky, of launching boulders that can paste entire bands of enemy warriors. Runic defenses second only to the Karak itself. You'll create something so impressive that by virtue of its strength Gloin will most likely make it the lynchpin of the Karak's outer defenses. If staffing the lesser option was difficult this would be near impossible with just your Hearth Guard, you will most certainly need extra bodies to man this structure to full readiness, around say a middling-sized Clan's worth of warriors. Then to top it all off, you plan to create a defensive work so mighty, so grand, that only a southern hold could hope to match it! You would not beggar yourself, but you would feel the cost of such an undertaking.
-[X] Aesthetics: The finishing touch to the whole shebang. More than the decor, it is the theme, the feel, the very image of your new Workshop.
-- [X] Extravagant: +5 actions, ???, +1 Conservative and Radical Runesmith Standing. This. Now this is something you want to be known across more than just the Far North. A true Wonder of the realms, and an edifice of such fine Craftsmanship that even the most hidebound Conservative to the most revolutionary Radical can appreciate the efforts put into the structure, if not the purpose. Kraka Drakk will certainly appreciate the association.
-[X] Classes: The Entire purpose of this is to make a place to teach these youngsters. What, or perhaps who else would you allow?
-- [X] Let Master Runesmiths disseminate Runes or related knowledge from here if they wish: 1 MAXIMUM, +4 Learning and Communication. Roughly doubles the rate of new Rune dissemination in the Far North. WILL BEGIN NORMALIZING SHARING OF RUNELORE IN THE REGION. If a Master Runesmith wishes to share a Rune they have developed you will, after proper vetting, give them access to the Workshop's facilities to do so.
-[X] Forum: Having Runesmiths around the compound and each other will get them talking. It's simply a matter of what you want to do about it.
-- [X] Make it part of the plan: 1 MAXIMUM +5 Learning, +15 Communication, Requires Exceptional Lodgings at minimum, +2 Radical Runesmith Standing, +1 Conservative Runesmith Standing. Noticeable increase to the creation of new Runes in Kraka Drakk, and half that for the Region. WILL BEGIN NORMALIZING GREATER DIPLOMACY AND CLOSER TIES BETWEEN RUNESMITHS IN THE REGION. This shall be a place for Runesmiths and their ideas to be forged and purified by the rigours of honest academic and sometimes physical debate. Halls from which they make spectacle and debate with each other should they wish. Better than them ruining the bars in town at the very least.
-[X] Business: Should the Workshop allow for Runesmiths to pursue the mundane realities of business, finding buyers, suppliers and patrons, within its walls?
--[X] Allow it: 1/3 MAXIMUM, Roughly half again increased proliferation of Runecraft in Kraka Drakk. If a Runesmith wishes to set up an appointment here you will not deny them.
-[X] Forging: You are RuneSMITHS after all, and a Smith is nothing without a forge.
--[X] Use unused Forge Space: 1/3 MAXIMUM, Roughly increases the base quality of metal goods in Kraka Drakk by half. When you aren't turning ignorant fools into slightly less ignorant fools, the forges you use to do so lie cold and empty. It feels like a waste to have such a well-made forge simply sitting there, never mind the cost of the coal to get it started up again! You abhor such efficiency! Let them be used if an enterprising smith has the tools and material available so that they aren't left to waste.
    -[X] Procurement:
--[X] …and Discounts: 1/2 MAXIMUM, +2 Learning +5 Communication, Requires Exceptional Shopping at minimum. Roughly doubles the quality of Runecraft across Kraka Drakk and half that for the Region. Get Jorri and perhaps Gloin on the case, and you're certain that you can find a way to offset the cost of reagents for prospective students and regular tournament winners. What better way to cultivate talent? They can certainly pay off the debt to the Karak.
    -[X] Library:
--[X] None at all: Books? Books are for people who aren't Runesmiths!

Then to top it all off, you plan to create a defensive work so mighty, so grand, that only a southern hold could hope to match it! You would not beggar yourself, but you would feel the cost of such an undertaking.
    -[X] Aesthetics:
-- [X] Extravagant: +5 actions, ???, +1 Conservative and Radical Runesmith Standing. This. Now this is something you want to be known across more than just the Far North. A true Wonder of the realms, and an edifice of such fine Craftsmanship that even the most hidebound Conservative to the most revolutionary Radical can appreciate the efforts put into the structure, if not the purpose. Kraka Drakk will certainly appreciate the association.
-[X] Classes: The Entire purpose of this is to make a place to teach these youngsters. What, or perhaps who else would you allow?
--[X] Let your Fellow Runelords disseminate Runes or related knowledge from here if they wish: 1/2 MAXIMUM, +3 Learning and Communication. Your fellow Runelords should be given the same offer, after all, they were chosen by the House and for all your quarrelling none of you would let an unworthy Dwarf join the ranks of the Runelords.
-- [X] Not an ember: You have a Workshop, go use it you wazzok!
    -[X] Procurement:
-- [X] and Hiring: 1 MAXIMUM, +3 Learning +5 Communication, Requires Extravagant Shopping, -1 Conservative Runesmith Standing. Roughly triples the quality of Runecraft across Kraka Drakk and double for the Region. WILL BEGIN NORMALIZING MORE ROBUST SUPPORT FOR JOURNEYMEN AND TALENTED RUNESMITHS IN THE REGION. Tournaments, discounts for students and continuous victors, and a system by which Runesmiths may not only hire bands of adventurous Dwarfs to help them gather reagents or collect said reagents for them, but also let regular Dwarfs offer reagents they may be in possession of for sale.
    -[X] Library:
--[X] None at all: Books? Books are for people who aren't Runesmiths!
[x] Plan: Perfectly Balanced as all things should be
    -[X] Food:
    --[X] Extravagant: +3 actions. +5 Size. +3 Learning. +2 Communication.
    -[X] Lodgings:
--[X] Extravagant: +4 actions, +7 Size, +2 Learning and Communication.
    -[X] Shopping:
--[X] Extravagant: +3 actions, +6 Size, +3 Learning and Communication, Requires Exceptional Lodgings at minimum.
    -[X] Defenses:
--[X] Marvellous: +5 actions, +12 Size, Requires Extravagant Lodgings at minimum, Unlocks Capstone Project write-in vote, +1 Conservative and Radical Runesmith Standing.
    -[X] Aesthetics:
--[X] Extravagant: +5 actions, ???, +1 Conservative and Radical Runesmith Standing.
    [X] Plan Balanced Progress
[X] Plan: Double Learning and triple Communication while staving off excumication?
[X] Plan A Good First Step
--[X] Limited: 1/3 MAXIMUM, +3 Learning. Tomes about some reagents and other information a Runesmith may find useful, but nothing truly groundbreaking.

I think people aren't quite grasping how significant of a change to the fate of the entire dwarf race the North still being intact and connected is. Rediscovery of a single northern hold was enough to crown someone as the high king of the entire race. And yeah, "modern" Warhammer had dwarves slowly being ground down by everything but some sort of end is unavoidable; everyone, even non dwarves, were heading down a bad end, like that's to a degree unavoidable. Go ahead and change things, we already have and still are, but don't expect (and please don't try) to flip the dwarf race on its head, and don't expect to be able to stave off everything bad for some sort of good, utopia, dream like ending for the race as a whole.
Also semirelated, a crit we got early on left the underway connections more protected than in canon so even greenskins & skaven are going to be weathered a bit better.
Edit: Go for change, but try and be measured and reasonable about things please.

, but one major issue I could see coming up is that collecting a large store of runelore-related info, which we ourself would curate and dictate access to, might be regarded by those less charitable to us as us trying to control how Runesmithing develops in the North, by creating a resource a large number of Runesmiths would have access to and probably use while also exerting more or less sole authority over it. By not adding in certain knowledge, or placing special emphasis on certain types, or whatever.

Not to mention it goes against a lot of Runesmithing tradition in general, which in and of itself could be seen as an overreach.
This whole endeavor is something that goes against tradition somewhat. That is what the Maximum indicators are meant to portray. The Library option is not any more special than the Business option.

Heck, I'd consider the Business Shopping option as something that is just as risky as a Library since they'd obviously be carrying rune related ingredients in transit, so they would be an easier target than a paranoid Runelord's abode.

Edit: I meant shopping, obviously.

Yea, that's the point every maximum is equally tradition breaking, but the library section is being treated as much more sacrosanct when it flatly isn't.

Library carries more standing penalties, so that first point isn't true. And Business is all about runelords taking commissions here. It has nothing to do with the transport of materials, which also doesn't have any risk to the craft and is already a normal thing.

Equally tradition breaking can be argued sure, but equally well received? No. Not at all. Just look at Forum and Library, and the standing gain and loss differences relative to the other options.
