On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

I'd love to see the results of this turn before accepting requests, due to the suspected Valaya-Hearthstone link and our little gift basket.

I would like to do the Gazul request given we have a good way of expanding favor with Valaya with the hearth guards. Next turn I want to put two actions to rune metal part 1b and do much the same thing we have done this turn with materials research.

We would need 520 more favour (without spending any) just to reach the next standing rank with Valaya, and we have no guarantee favour earning options will show up for the hearthguard every turn, though Valaya favour probably will be a common option.

I think these concepts could slot in beautifully as part of Snorri's runesmithing ethos, as translated into a fighting style: a hundred thousand hammer blows, and on the hundred thousandth and first exchange, a single strike, perfectly timed and aimed to finish his work - be it striking a rune into existence or separating a demon's head from its shoulders.

Huh, I must've mixed it with the concept of another axe. Whoops, my bad.

But thing is, our Spell-X is a bit lacking (even if the standard Runes of Spellbreaking and Spelleating are quite nice), so I was thinking of using the axe idea as an excuse to up our Spell-X without having to trade for it. Maybe after we're done with the more pressing matters, though, and maybe after Karstah and Nain return from their Journeyman Trials.

So how does the currents rune fit into all of this? Well, one way to look at it is to say it embodies concentration. It represents unerring cuts that can slip past any defence, piercing armour and scales not because of overpowering physical force but rather because of sharpness of implement and precision in the hand that guides it. It is the rune for strikes made exactly at the right time and in the right place.
I would worry that you are imposing a meaning rather than drawing one from the source rune description. Currents speak to me of water, of the way it flows around obstacles and uses the pressure created to flow all the more powerfully as a result. That is to say the ability to adapt, to change the timing and angle of attack slightly mid-swing in response to the movements of the opponent. To turn an imperfect strike into a perfect one.

It speaks to me as a recognition that errors can and will occur, but the skilled individual will spot those errors and correct them before they spoil the intent of the original action.

So... anyone else kinda curious what kind of buildings we can do? Like, buildings are things we can rune and do stuff with, we did it with the gates, but nothing else so far. Outside of maybe the pure-gromril smelter but that's not listed as a creation of note.

I'd like to do some kinda big fancy building thing at some point but got no idea what kind of thing would be worth doing.

Didn't we rune the royal palace (or whatever the Dwarfs call it)? Or am I misremembering?

On the subject of magical architecture, take a mundane use and inflate things to magical proportions is one method. So a mill can grind wheat into flour, then a runic mill can grind rocks into dust (references to stonebread and so on). A library can store knowledge and lend books on a limited basis, a runic library can create books on demand ensuring that knowledge is never lost. A shop can help people get what they want, a runic shop can identify what they need.

Hrm, maybe I should try coming up with an axe concept to help with the theme.

Snorri's pretty great in an all around sense in terms of duels thanks to Zhargall and Barak Azamar making him absurdly durable.

So what he really needs is a superlative monster killing Az if we're going to go that route, I think.

If its for killing monsters, it should be a sword. That's the tool of a monster slayer, according to Gazul. Rare as it might be to need something able to kill monsters.

I agree with others an Az should be the next weapon we forge for Snorri. It would also mirror his old armor/weapon set made by his wife which is important as well. A symbolism to remember her by even if he no longer wears the gifts she made for him.

And thinking about it now @soulcake what was Snorri's wife's name?

Why do people want Snorri to use a sword or make a sword for himself? Snorri has spent centuries wielding an axe and hammer into battle, yet apparently we must throw away all these centuries of experience so we can wield a sword, that at least as far as I'm aware does not give some +5 you are using a sword bonus to kill things instead of an axe. You know what Snorri has wielded for centuries and is used solely for murdering, and the primary warrior ancestor used? A god damn war axe.

Yeah, I've got no issue with Snorri using an axe in the vast majority of battles. Just that swords are meant to be used against monsters, not axes. That's the lessons taught by the Ancestors. Sure, Grimnir could use an axe and make it work, but that doesn't mean we could/should. I'm definitely up for getting an axe first, and having it be our main weapon. Just... have a sword available to switch out when we have to deal with monsters that simply won't die from just an axe.

We've not really fought anything that took days to kill with an axe as it kept healing back or anything. The monsters we've fought don't really seem to be the same kind of monsters that the sword was meant for. Though could be wrong there.

There is no difference, not in the system we use and not at our level of skill.
