We'll need to have a lengthy talk with the Ishinomaki girls if we want to know what really happened to Kato. Maybe other independent meguca too, so we can reconstruct her last days before she 'died' or went missing. Problem is that independent meguca have a high 'turnover' rate, and it's been more than a year since then.

There's a very high chance that Kato's been a seed for awhile now and fed handed over to an incubator :(
I think that we have a good idea what happened to Kato. We know Kato leaves, Akiko goes after her, and Akiko comes back with an obsession to gather Grief Seeds. Likely scenario: Kato witched out in front of Akiko, and Akiko killed her.

If it was up to me, then when it comes up I would have Sabrina say to Akiko telepathically "What did you do with Kato's Grief Seed?" An innocuous questions that I think the comatose Akiko would react to if I'm correct.

We need to try and help Akiko too, if only for Rin's sake and the stability of the groups.
Stability was a poor word choice. Akiko is largely a source of instability. And more people would be happier to see her gone then vice versa. But as much as I dislike her and most of her group, yeah we have to attempt rehabilitation. Joy.
We don't need to do this. We don't owe Sendai anything, and Akiko walking around would make her (many, many) victims at least as unhappy as Akiko not walking around makes Sendai.
On the offchance that she does recover, I'm sure we can manage the situation, but I see no compelling reason to bring this outcome about.

We can and we should because this whole situation screams of us not having the full picture. As long as the Akiko problem is unresolved, I don't think we can safely turn our backs on Sendai, knowing that it won't implode on us one morning. Besides, for all that fighting them was necessary and the right choice, Sendai needs what help we can give too, where practical.

Maybe Oriko could find out more about Kato, if we can get a physical description or photo of her.
Just have her look for the prettiest meguca that's ever been seen in the nearby cities. A meguca so pretty that asking about her whereabouts gets you stories about how pretty she was. :p

Lists of worse and horrible things we could do.
  1. Steal Kirika from Oriko.

And that's all I got.
That would be horrible, but it's something Oriko showed she could handle, even if the way she would handle it would be by arranging things so she's buried with Kirika. Of course, if we first gave Oriko hopes that she won't die anytime soon and that she's actually got a happy life with her girlfriend ahead... then yes. That would be the worst, short of fulfilling empty threats.

Normally I don't ship, but I can easily see Mami having... confusing feelings when it comes to Sabrina.

The thing is that any shipping with Mami's pretty much off the table with Sabrina as her emotional anchor since that...would be Bad. Very much so, and go against the goal of having her be truly happy and stable without unhealthy dependence on Sabrina.

Regardless of whether it's one sided or mutual (and I definitely ship it), it isn't a viable option right now for the characters.

tl;dr: now super sure Oriko's honestly trying to do good; I don't think Homura will allow us to let O&K go free.

Thinking about Oriko lead me to think about Homura and Mami.

After our talk with Homura, I'm preeeeetty damn sure Oriko's not plotting anything behind our backs. Like, 99.99% sure. The best we've ever gave her was our promise to try and talk to Homura and Mami into releasing them from house arrest, letting bygones be bygones. Something that seems won't be happening any time soon... Mami's reaction to anything nice we say about O&K is pretty much "if you say so...", while Homura's pretty much "no", even thought she tries to give us as much leeway as she can.

Now we've promised to be more careful, instead of less, so I don't see O&K being released in a long time.

Supposing Diabulus Ex Oriko was manipulating us into wilfully releasing her so she could get into a better position for her dastardly schemes... I know her plans tend to fail, but this is just a non-starter.

...

Now, on actually fulfilling both promises, how do we get Homura and Mami less distrustful of Oriko while being more careful in our dealings with her?

Making them spend time together doesn't seem to work with Homura: Both times she was in proximity to either Oriko or Kirika, she just glared at them and pushed them as far away as she could. I'm thinking that unless something crazy happens and Oriko ends up saving Madoka's life or something, Homura's not gonna let up on this.

...Sadly, we're not in the kind of universe where making convoluted plots to make two enemies get along would work; else I could see Sabrina, Kirika and Madoka plotting to make it happen. :p

At least try to keep her alive until Walpurgisnacht, and get Kirika out where possible. Homura doesn't seem to care about her as much for some reason.

To be brutally honest, Best Buddy is not as important as Oriko, as far as threat assessment goes, due to Kirika being pretty much an extension of Oriko.

But Homura's not exacly OK with Kirika, either:
Homura nods again, the motion slow and measured. "Fine," she says, turning to go. A few steps bring her to the edge of the roof, and she leaps away, golden ribbon trailing after her. Kirika grins at you, and follows the time traveller.

You can see Homura give Kirika an undisguised, wary look, and gesture at the far end of the rooftop. Kirika pouts at her, before bouncing over to the far end of the rooftop and plunking herself down on the ledge. Homura watches her go, before pulling out a rifle of some kind from her sheild and resting it on her knees.

We can only do what we can. Mami will probably warm to Oriko given time, and Homura can hardly object to us being around Oriko if we frame it as keeping an eye on her.
Homura might change her mind on her own or with further assistance from Oriko, or we might eventually summon up the courage of our convictions and proceed over her objections.

That'd be a diplomacy fail unless Homura makes it necessary, though. In the name of playing nice, keeping Oriko under comfortable house arrest seems like the least bad option for now.

That's like telling Mami after she's been lichbombed: "By the way, Kyubey won't tell shit unless you ask", an innocuous statement normally that she could react to.

Or put in another way, the only outcomes are either Akiko doesn't react/understand or she spirals. Even if we can dewitch, we should ask other people before Akiko.

Oriko: "I'm not your dating service!"

That is nice and all but I've kinda thrown it out of the window after Sabrina asked Mami to let her sleep with her.

Yes, it can be purely platonic, but...We know she has a crush, so no way that is. Shipping is more than just hugs, dates and kisses.

That said, I care about warehouse-kun far more than Mami's daw/brokeness as my recent posts would indicate.
Though the oujo can be pretty cooool.

Oriko: "I'm not your dating service!"
Sabrina: "For a precog, you're really shortsighted, aren't you? Do you think I could even go on a date right now? With Mami limpeting like this, I can't date her nor can I date anybody else since she'd be a constant third wheel. Really, smartest meguca you are not. Now, let us never speak about this again. Bye."

And they never spoke about any of that again.

...

Three years later:

"Lunch time! Who's turn is it today?"

"It was me yesterday, so it's you today."

"Oh... OK, I guess, how's she doing?"

"Same old, same old. I thought she said something yesterday, but it was just my imagination."

*Sigh* "Well, I'll just get this done quickly, then we can go get some ice cream?"

"Sure."
