Folks, the northern trading post is labelled "dangerous" for a reason. I'd love to get pine seeds and plant them all over the steppes, but let's not rush into it.

I really want a trading post for the saltern boost, but I'm favoring the eastern location. The situation to the west sounds explosive, quite frankly, and I think that the Trelli have bitten off more than they know how to chew. I recommend that we move into position to work on them, but make them think we're still their friends, and wait for the right time to put the screws on.

Boats, roads, and reestablishing peaceful relations with our neighbors are all great options.

Stability boost for a Golden Age. We're so close!

Well, if we do the northern trade post I vote we immediately do the south post as well next turn so we can fend off the Trelli a bit better while we try to study pine forests enough to a) figure out how to grow more pines in our more northern provinces, and b) figure out pitch.
Definitely. This is meant as preparation, not as "good enough" project.

Ideally we build more boats as well, but I cannot promise that.

Its taking the opportunity to prevent them from making a fight of it.
I think you're being far too optimistic.

Especially since you explicitly missed that the Trelli are hiring external tribes as mercenaries, and that trying to cut off their tin is going to take time to kick in - time in which they're going to drop a lot of force on that newly-built trading post. And if we can't supply the defenders, they're not going to run out of time before they get their tin back - and we get kicked in the face for failing a subordinate and losing territory.

What is the saying, 'power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely'?

Central governments work so long as the power is never fully concentrated. Separation of powers is one of those things that you really have to admire the American founding fathers for.

Even if it was in large part due to paranoia about the role of central government getting too powerful. :V

The only way for power to not concentrate in a central government, is to not have a central government.

As for the USA, the paranoia was very much justified, after all the skeleton government of the early USA, is now a behemoth with powers that were once thought impossible.

Well, I wouldn't be salty if North won, but I personally feel that we need to do West first so that the Trelli don't take the location before we can.

That's just greed speaking, we are a primarily land focused nation that relies on vast land producing people and goods; not Venice playing trading game.

Attention and actions are limited, focus is a requirement not a leisure.

Before. We are playing a different game now

Now we have to deal with Pirates.

Pirates that we are not prepped to deal with.
We are going to be hit by pirates no matter what we do. Our choice right now is whether we want to have a second base (that also builds more boats and denies them access to a critical war material) to fight them off with while they are weak, or to allow them a safe haven from which they can harass our shipping.

Hold on. I know that we're not used to naval combat, but wasn't naval combat in this era basically simply all about boarding actions-attempting them, avoiding them, and fighting them?(also ramming, but ramming was pretty difficult, and not a factor here since we don't have ships specced for this).

Now, granted Trelli ships probably have more crew per ship, but we can crank out longships like nobody's business, and in a naval battle all about boarding, we can probably swarm a single ship 2-1 and have a good shot at capturing it.

Basically, naval combat against the Trelli will suck, but we won't automatically lose thanks to our equipment and ability to probably swarm small patrols with ships and capture them.
