I assume that sharing the event location and time with the other teams counts as cross-referencing, since they'll speak up if they've found anything.

PSA: There has been a small retcon on the most recent chapter. My understanding of henge did not match that of the other QMs and it was suggested that Hazō's henge had been shown as more durable than it should have been. After discussion, three or four sentences have been removed such that Hazō went with the enforcer willingly. This will not make any difference to anything that's going on right now, but we wanted to be consistent.

You know, I did pause for a second there to think "Huh, that's a pretty durable Henge".

I'm more-specifically interested in Shino bugging it via some means -- he's previously said that he has trouble tracking through forests, but this isn't such a case -- than actually doing contact poison shenanigans. But yes, that would be fine.

Okay, I just edited in the following:

  • Hazou will also raise idea of messing with the bandanas in some way to give ourselves an advantage
  • If soaked in insect pheremones, Shino might be able to do night 'assassinations' via chakra drain since they have to be worn at all times?
  • Rather than try to find existing bandanas, what if we just bought a bunch of bandanas ourselves, treated with whatever we want to treat them with, and had them delivered to the Tower with "for the Exam" written on the delivery statement? With luck the proctors will assume someone else in the bureaucracy did it and go ahead and use them. And if not, we lose nothing.
  • We could also dose them in a slow-acting mildly soporific chemical that doesn't hurt anybody but is distracting and can make people drousy... of course we secretly have identical 'clean' bandanas that we pull out and switch for the drugged ones we're given.
  • Or is messing with the bandanas too perilous to even try, given how seriously Mist takes them as protecting the safety of the village?

As you can see, I had an evil idea about how to actually dose the bandanas. It seems from the instructors that the proctors weren't told what the bandanas will look like. Probably someone was tasked to go buy them, so with luck we might be able to trick them into using ours rather than whatever ones were bought by some flunky.

Hilarious, but completely off-topic thought: What would happen if we stole all the bandannas? Like, the proctor opens the storage scroll holding them only to find it empty.

It also occurs to me that the bandana strategy and our "visit the shops pretending to be a proctor" strategy would work together. There probably is a shop that the Tower would logically order its bandanas from, and Keiko with her superior logistics analysis might be able to suss out what it is. So while asking about the exam, we can also ask about "the bandana order" and if it hasn't gone out yet.... Yeah, hell, this could work! And I'm preeetty sure that Ino has some poison expertise she's keeping under her vest (her family runs a flower shop for gods' sake), so I best she could provide something suitable to dose them.

I mean, sure, maybe they already bought their bandanas and had them delivered a week ago, but it's worth a shot. And the village has been overworked and overstretched and in chaos, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if they're doing things last minute.

Further Pangolin Ally Info
@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail Any word on Keiko's Pangolins, Pangolin jutsu, character sheets, or what Panashe learned at the end of Chapter 165?
Pandamonium is a heavy weapons pangolin. He uses ninjutsu to scoop up earth and stone to shape into huge projectiles, then prodigious physical strength to lob them.

Panta is a courier pangolin. He has an excellent memory and a talent for staying stealthy while running very fast.

Pangaya is a bodyguard pangolin. She uses ninjutsu to get allies out of harm's way and/or redirect harm's way from them to herself.

Pandojuru is a battlefield support pangolin. He uses ninjutsu to strengthen and energise allies, though some of his abilities only work on other pangolins.

Pangolin jutsu are next on the list. Whose character sheets are you asking for?

What are their various summoning costs as per the chart below?

XP Value of Summon / Chakra Cost to Summon
0-1k / 15
1k-2k / 30
2k-3k / 60
3k-5k / 105
5k-8k / 165

Pangolin jutsu are next on the list. Whose character sheets are you asking for?

Hazou and the rest of the team. We haven't been given access to the finalized sheets.

everyone else

Pangaya is a bodyguard pangolin. She uses ninjutsu to get allies out of harm's way and/or redirect harm's way from them to herself.

:):):)

The tricky part is that the sustain cost is 1/3 summoning value per hour after the first hour. Keeping Pangaya for even a10 hour day will take huge chunks of Keiko's chakra.

Man, we need to figure out some way to get more chakra. Maybe we ought to capture and tie up another team and use them for chakra batteries?

Defend the Log Technique
Resolve * 4, Stamina * 2

Fight, mighty Pangolin Clan! Rise up, allies of the Pangolin! Breathe in the power of the Pantokrator as you Defend the Log! Allow His speed and strength to flow through you as you crush the enemies of the Clan!

At casting time, the pangolin designates:
  • A cube of up to X meters per side, where X <= (⅓ * Level). The volume of the cube must include the caster's current location.
  • A power level of up to Yd100, where Y <= Level.
  • Zero or more allies, all of whom must be within the volume of the cube as it forms.
Every turn, the pangolin gets +Yd100 to TacMov and physical combat skills. Its designated allies get +(½ * Y)d100 bonus to TacMov and physical combat skills. The bonuses to TacMov apply to initiative on the following round.

Any ally who leaves the cube (voluntarily or not) loses the benefit and does not regain it if they re-enter.

If the pangolin leaves the cube the jutsu fails.

The cube is visible as a faint shimmer of coloured chakra.

This technique does not stack with itself, although it does stack with normal chakra boost.

Cost: X * Y CP per turn that the jutsu is kept active. Combat action to activate, Quick to sustain.

For the verification of the information on the next event the process we should use is thus:

Each team shall write down as close to verbatim the information they got before even speaking out loud with the other teams.

With the information the source from who, where and when the information was obtained.

After all the information is written down then share the contents. Compare the notes and write down on a separate page the differences and leave space for notes on the sources themselves and the possible motivations for the differences.

With a large sample size we can pick out the good informants we can use for other information gathering efforts.

Trying to think of more rat bastard ideas. What do you think about these plans?

Sleeping Locations
1. As part of Event preparation, find an pliable employee at every likely inn/hostel we think might be utilized in the Event and bribe them in advance to note if any bandana-wearing contestants check in and what room(s) they are staying in. Arrange it all in advance so we can send someone around to collect the information tomorrow evening after the "clients" have closed up for the night. (Special note to look for that Lightning team.)

2. We won't be able to execute this until the exam starts and we get the info, but we take the information from #1, write a bunch of notes information on the position of various teams, and have them given to the hotel clerks for delivery to the other teams. Remember, we get no special points for doing the assassinations ourselves. But if we "encourage" other teams to start attacking each other by giving them information on each other's sleeping locations, we get all of the benefits and none of the drawbacks. (Naturally, leave Leaf teams off any lists.)

Client Transport
1. We rent a rickshaw or carriage or something with enclosed walls and a roof, and use that to transport our client around. Anything to give them some actual cover when moving from one place to another on the streets so they can't be easily sniped. (Damaging the carriage is "collateral damage".)

2. We arrange for several carriages to be available for rental near the Tower at dawn tomorrow (easily done by telling vendors there is money to be made - they might even pay us!). However Hazou secretly makes and plants a seal trap in each one whereby when someone's feet get in the passenger position, they break the line of effect and cause a misterator loaded with "'poison gas" (really a harmless pungent scent) to release. There's a small note near the seals, "This was poison gas. Report your client is dead." (Teams may assume this was set up by the exam rather than us.)

What do you think? Other ideas?

I like these ideas a lot. But the more of these ideas (which are very good!) we have, the more reason we have to let the other Leaf teams in on it so they can help us arrange these things.

I think I might have hit an "oops, no spoons exception" error with my suggestion. It would be an unavoidable offloading to the QMs for information that other teams would be gathering.
