Well, the existence of the Spirit Bomb wasn't lost, as I understand it- there is seriously NO WAY that the Exile legends wouldn't include "and then Goku blasted ___ with the Spirit Bomb!" The technique of the Spirit Bomb seems to have been lost more because Goku (and/or Gohan) never taught anyone to do it while they were alive, and nobody had any idea where to begin now that they were dead. Not even the historians. Nobody remembers that about Chiaotzu. After all...telepathy? Ki does that. Telekinesis? Everybody learns how to at least push something. Psychic energy blasts? Ki blasts. Obviously.
At one point somebody forgot to mention that Chiaotzu was psychic. And the people to whom that wasn't mentioned went on to write the histories. And then it was forgotten forever. Much like the Spirit Bomb.
I figure if he's remembered at all, he's remembered as one of several interchangeable figures from when Grandpa Goku was rambling about his boyhood. "Oh yeah, when he was little he fought the Red Ribbon Army. They had generals code-named after the colors of the rainbow. Like General Blue and General White and Captain Purple and Colonel Green, no wait I'm pretty sure that last one's from Star Trek..."
simply because however Goku did it Back In The Day, I am preeetty sure it didn't involve him doing calculus in his head fast.
Could still be 'your father was clearly talented at math, but refused to apply himself!' as a major motivation point.Chichi had Gohan studying all the time long before anyone knew Instant Transmission, except the aliens who invented it.
Chi-chi was initially, in a word, some combination of a sheltered princess and a country rube, so I'd not be surprised by that.Heh.
The only fundamental issue I have with that (it hits right where I live) is that without formal instruction in higher mathematics, it is impossible to tell who is and is not good at it. Goku might show extraordinary aptitude with basic arithmetic, but if he never had formal schooling in algebra-and-beyond, it would be hard to ever know if he would have been good at it. That includes, obviously, calculus.
Then again, it may well be that nobody ever told Chi-Chi that, and knowing Chi-Chi, making the assumption "your father is good at math but never bothered to learn algebra, THEREFORE YOU WILL EXCEL AT ALL THE MATH OR ELSE!" would be entirely in character for her.
That's true, but I was thinking more in terms of her basic personality. Would you tell her she had misconceptions about how math works? I'd be a bit nervous about it.Chi-chi was initially, in a word, some combination of a sheltered princess and a country rube, so I'd not be surprised by that.
You nod, stepping back. "Yeah, well I've been there. Think next time. But this time, I think I can forgive the mistake." You take a few steps back. "Although, you do know that this is going to last, like, less than a second, right? I can't even really do full power without breaking the wards." You blink and then cock your head. "Actually, come to think, maybe golden oozaru is a lot more powerful than we thought. We've never been able to test the upper bounds, we kinda just assumed..."
And for that, you have Oddball to thank.
Tabe blinks, quite off his balance. "Oh...right...um. I didn't think about that, really, I just..."
I thought we "confirmed" this was Golden Oozaru's current cap in Jaffur's head (possible endurance training for a FPGO notwithstanding) by powering up to "full" at the 5% spirit cap. Were we mistaken, or is this just a reference to the endurance training Jaffur thought of? Or is this going to be one of those things where us "knowing" our cap was 1.5 billion made it real as a spirit?Golden Oozaru Power Level: 1.5 Billion (At Cap, speed of 750 million, durability and strength of 2.25 Billion).
It's more that Kakara just realized that she never actually powers up to full anymore. So this got kind of skipped over in the discussion:
This is what's currently in our character sheet:

If nothing else, this is a reminder that we'd really like to find a way to train at full power sometime. Maybe we can ask Gohan next time we talk to him if there's a way to visit the afterlife without dying?
Speaking of Gohan (in the quote there), will we have the opportunity to talk to him again before the dragon? It's more that Kakara just realized that she never actually powers up to full anymore.
To clarify: there are times when she's at her cap, but she isn't doing the typical scream-and-lights show to get there unless she's feeling dramatic. For her, powering up is like flicking on a sliding light switch. She wants 1.125 billion, she sets to 1.125 billion. She wants 5% of 1.5 billion, she sets to it. She never powers up to, "everything I've got."
So in one sense, it's occurring to her that there may well be more power in the golden oozaru form and she simply never thought to check. She's relatively sure that isn't the case, but she's never set out to try and discover the truth of the matter. In another, though, Oddball was firing and thus she started jabbering in stream of consciousness.
Yes.Speaking of Gohan (in the quote there), will we have the opportunity to talk to him again before the dragon?
