Is there any provision in Exile society for there to be multiple generations of Patriarchs/Matriarchs at once? The reigning lords of the royal houses retire, and in our generation that was the end of it, but I imagine there would be occasions on which a lord lives long enough to see their living great-grandchild born.
Though I doubt a lord has to step down and retire when that happens, if they're still in good health and not so inclined.
it's allowed, from what I remember. There's no real limit to how many generations are "allowed" to exist. usually they're retired from politics and it doesn't matter much.
I remember that one of the requirements to step up to Lord/Lady position is to have an heir ready (and presumably approved by seers) though.
The part where Dandeer could mind-control not only Lord Vegeta to protect her (which was fairly predictable) but also Berra (!) and Yammar, who hates her (!!!)... Ehh, THAT had nothing to do with Carrick. It seems likely she'd implanted commands in both of them years ago, so there's at least a reasonable chance that a vision could have warned us we'd have to face more opposition.
In which case we could have taken some precautions and avoided a lot of suffering.
I think we also took it for granted that people would have been screened for mind control shenanigans.
We kind of expected Berra, honestly. Yammar was the true surprise, which we definitely could have seen coming because WHY didn't he act more decisively?
If only we had thought to explicitly ask the Senzu sorcerer to check Yammar's mind for possible spells... one more mistake we made.

The supposition was that if someone in the inner circle was compromised, we were screwed because they would have just up and told Dandeer. We didn't count on Dandeer being a level of genius in Sealing that was completely unprecedented(apparently, the kind of control she demonstrated over Berra, Vegeta, Yammar, and later Jaffur usually leaves them more akin to Resident Evil zombies than anything remotely capable of passing for a normal person) while being mediocre at best in everything else, with Diplomacy as a dump stat that she was mostly getting around by abusing her position, and we were seeing cracks in that whenever she did something the Vegetans found particularly repugnant, like her total apathy to the humans dying to nuclear detonations.
We were also didn't know that being hit with mind control in your base state carried over if you went Super Saiayn, as the only time in canon a SSJ has been mindcontrolled via magic was Majin Vegeta, and he explicitly allowed that to get the power boost so he could match Goku in a fight, and still retained enough control to focus on that over Boppity's orders. We were not expecting Dandeer to outperform Boppity in mind control to such an extreme degree. Though I suppose a sample size of 1 isn't really enough to be confident in.
One of the big reasons she got as far as she did in the World Seal she carried out was that she was just forcing anyone who might try to visit her quarters away with her Lady Vegeta authority, and Poptart mentioned that us being a Scion would have allowed us to bypass that, though I remember a response to that along the lines of 'You wanted us to spend time alone with Captain Mindcontrol... like, on purpose?' and a number of comments that the thread had an amply demonstrated hatred of Dandeer they shared with Kakara, meaning there was little reason for us to deliberately spend time alone with someone who had mind controlled her own son.
Our issues with Berra assisting in Sealing Jaffur were one thing. Kakara had apparently had a good relationship with him right up until the point she went Super Saiyan trying to stop him from grabbing Jaffur, and she reached out to him on that basis. We barely knew Dandeer beyond 'Jaffur's mother who takes abuse from Vegeta too' before the Sealing, and everything we learned about her after that point only increased the 'this person is only marginally better than Dazarel, the guy who goes around eating planets for power, not unlike Imperfect Cell' impression we were continually gaining. Finding out that she'd faked injuries she'd taken from Vegeta(she was the one who broke her arm), her suspected involvement in the attempts on the Scouts, bombing of diplomatic talks between the Exiles and humans, the way she just left Kakara to die when Kakara offered a fig leaf by leaving her 6 open for Dandeer to cover, and let's not forget the monstrous slaughter of ten thousand Vegetan Sorcerers. And she has the audacity to try and claim any kind of victimhood.
Like, Kakara has a Superman-esque level of 'Thou Shalt Not Kill' going on, and Jaffur commented on how much she clearly wanted Dandeer dead after the Vegetan Sorcerer reveal. At this point, Dazarel manages to eke out more empathy from me, because he's been left to go around and eat planets without any social influences after he separated from whatever poisonous influence set him on this path in the first place that even Dazarel recognizes as such based on his lack of surprise to Kakara's supposition that his tutor was trying to get him killed, while Kakara herself commented on how Dandeer continues to double-down at every opportunity, treating Sealing like a hammer.
Heck, this whole training Dazarel thing we're doing is entirely about giving him a little bit of trust in the hopes he'll improve. Dandeer's had years where Vegeta was a loving husband and father she could fiddle with like a wind-up toy, and Jaron her obedient son she could similarly mess with whenever she pleased, but that World Seal thing was years in the making. She got the family she wanted, and immediately turned around to try and do the same to the whole world, possibly even before. The only reason I won't vote to kill her when it comes up is because Kakara won't go for it unless there's legitimately no other choice, because I fully expect that Dandeer would happily try to dominate all life if given access to something like the Anti-Life Equation.
Dazarel is at least smart enough not to try and sabotage Kakara when his last effort ended with him 20 times weaker than he started and having drawn the ire of the God of Heroes, who seems to have the exact sort of conceptual advantage against Dragons you would expect. Given Dandeer almost let Kakara die against Dazarel, I doubt we can count on her not to try and spite Kakara even if it risks getting herself killed. Since, you know, she already did that once back when all Kakara had really done up to that point was glare at her and not speak up in her defense at the Ancestor Cult's trial, and now we've led a failed coup against her and are currently scheming to effectively tear the world down around her by removing her World Seal and definitely couping her this time.
Since this does seem to be the time to dredge up old plot points and all that: has it been enough time that you would be willing to tell us how things would have gone if we had gone to Dandeer instead of Valentine about training Jaron? IIRC, that vote also had the "what the heck is your future plan?" sub-option, and I've always been curious as to how that would have panned out.
I know you said year seven, and it is still IIRC only year six, (both in quest, and also IRL time since the quest was started) but you also said to ask in a year or two, and it has been five. I think by now we've probably had enough time to cool off from that specific vote to take the answer like mature... ah, who am I kidding? On the flip side, we have gone on to be salty about... other things... so I don't think the fallout from this answer would be very bad, comparatively.

The custom of succession is that the Scion becomes Lord/Lady when they have a child the Seers approve of to succeed them, with the prior Lord/Lady stepping into the Matriarch/Patriarch role, which is typically held to be more of a cultural/religious position vaguely akin to the English monarchy. Albeit, this is not a fantastically stable society and this custom has been broken as often as it has been honored. There can be any number of generations of Matriarchs and Patriarchs. They vaguely sort according to seniority, but they are saiyans and quite happy to slug it out if they have an issue and aren't willing to back down.

Asking Dandeer would've stunned her. Her first answer would've been a hard no and ordering you out of her house, but the gesture of outreach would've been a possible in to reframing her mental image of you. It also would have been a purely in-character crack between her and Jaron.
Basically, what you did was what needed to happen to start training Jaron in ki use at the cost of permanently alienating his mother. Asking Dandeer would have given you chances to open social combat with her, at the cost of losing the chance to train Jaron at the time.

I'm gonna guess this one's probably off-limits because we're most likely not done jumping around yet - if they were on the list of places we could wind up before, there's every chance they'll still be there when we make our next hop.

Fair enough. Not what I would have expected, what with the final part of the confront Dandeer option basically calling her out about her (lack of a) long term plan and needling her that her own people don't support her, which to me would have reinforced her adversarial mental image of us, but I can see it.
That said, I think you definitely made the right choice not to reveal this at that time. IIRC, there were over 100 omake bonus points stacked towards convincing Dandeer, so to go through all of that and then "fail" the communication... in as much as training Jaron was the goal, so not training him would be a failure... I think that the revelation of this result would have lit the thread on fire even moreso than the actual result did, as those who "lost" might have felt that they didn't have a fair shot to "win" at all, especially with the situation surrounding that specific vote in the first place.
Or at least that's how I would have probably seen it if I had voted for that option. I can't really speak for anyone else though.
To be fair, she is, loosely speaking, a Dragonball Z villain. So her having abilities that are both insanely high and insanely minmaxed such that she's ludicrously weak in other areas shouldn't really be surprising.
Well, we kind of knew that Dandeer's mind control would work on different premises.
...
Babidi had to give specific orders and was trying to boss Majin Vegeta around by a direct contest of wills. And Vegeta, say what you like against him, does have a lot of willpower, especially when his will is telling him "be a stubborn vicious asshole who wants to fight Goku some more."
Dandeer seems to do mind control by removing your capacity to understand or remember the reasons you shouldn't do as she says. This is much more insidious, and almost ideally calculated as a strategy for remaining in control of mind control victims who are themselves very strong-willed. Because your control won't feel, subjectively, like someone trying to impose orders on them while you rant about how the one thing a saiyan always keeps is his pride. It'll feel like "oh, hey, why not go do this?"
If Dandeer had been in Babidi's shoes, Vegeta would very likely just have forgotten he hated Goku. And forgotten any other reason not to obey his good friend, Dandeer.
...
On the other hand, on the large scale and in the long run, Dandeer's approach is probably more prone to screwups from forgetting to cover all your bases, all else being equal. For instance, we were ultimately undone by the fact that Dandeer made Yammar willing to fight for us. Specifically Yammar. Jaffur had Lord Vegeta pretty well neutralized even if Vegeta did eventually contribute significantly to our defeat through heroic willpower and sniping with a beam attack. And we were able to neutralize Berra at the cost of inflicting a lot of pain on him.
But we never did really put Yammar down, and that fact was more than we could handle.
And yet Dandeer's own plans could have been entirely undone by Yammar's own actions while under mind control because it turns out (in hindsight unsurprisingly given his backstory) that he has some kind of trait whereby he is 100% willing to let hostages die rather than allow them to influence his actions.
Berra was greatly hampered by his perceived need to keep Dandeer alive even while we were in full "HIT A MOTHERFUCKER WITH ANOTHER MOTHERFUCKER!" mode using Dandeer's unconscious body as a flail. But Yammar didn't even slow down and would, while under Dandeer's own mind control, have killed Dandeer himself if we, Kakara weren't so scrupulous about letting her survive.
I do not think Dandeer would have been happy with how that situation played out, but the nature of her mind control (which does not override the victim's will so much as it redirects it) caused that to happen to her.
Other failings of her mind control included things like not telling Carrick explicitly that she should warn him about speculative threats (whether he managed to logic his way into it or managed to irritate her by pestering her every time she interacted with another person and thus opened up the slight possibility of causing them to attack her is up to reader interpretation) and not ordering Jaffur, once she had reasserted her control over him, to be nice to her, thus resulting in him delivering that remarkably blunt description of how very badly Jaron wanted to tear her into pieces, to the point that he was too mad to still be suicidal for the moment.
It's a very powerful tool is deployed precisely or broadly enough, but she was trying to navigate a very delicate situation with only a partial understanding of what she would even need to be targeting.

Well, given how bad that lack of understanding turned out for her, we should assume that she will be more careful with her orders and safeguards going forward.
Which is why I again proppose that we should use our free wish to undo her control on our people instead of a time chamber or whatever the current plan is. Seriously, the Namekians already have three wishes to prepare for the invasion, we should use ours to free our people to prevent the potential genocide from when the invaders get to Garenhuld (be it the one the saiyans will commit on the invaders or that of the Garenhulders that Dandeer won't bother protecting).
Well, since Dragonball Z dragons are usually gracious enough to tell you when a wish is impossible of fulfillment, I figure there's not much downside in trying.

Meanwhile, Back On New Namek...
The chirping of birds echoes oddly, trapped in the bizarre acoustics of the unnatural chamber. Blue grass stands still and frozen in the dead air. The sounds of nature seem almost confused, cut off as they are from the endless shifting of the circle of life.
"HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
BANG
Birds panic, screeching and flapping wildly as a shockwave blasts through the air. Grass flattens, trees sway.
Perika hangs in the air, wreathed in her pulsing, white aura, and stares down at her group of Namekian sparring partners.
Tambourine grimaces, rolling his shoulder and raising his fists. "Ah, crap."
tsew
Perika flashes down through the air and hurls a kick into his guard. He falls back, grunting in pain with every blow turned aside.
From the side, Oboe charges, forcing Perika to turn and catch him. He howls, aura flaring as he strains to hold her in place. "COME ON! FOCUS ON ME- OHGODAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-!"
Perika smoothly whirls in place, dragging him along with. She spins for a moment, and his legs flare out like a propeller, forcing the others to back off. Laughing, she releases him, letting him slam into Tambourine. The two men yell in pain as they go down in a tangle of limbs.
She lets the spin carry her around to face the other two fighters, spreading her arms and grinning. "C'mon, boys, gimme something here," she says, dropping to the ground and bouncing on her toes.
The remaining fighters, Tuba and Cello, trade deeply resigned looks, then sigh and square up. Cello charges as Tuba raises his fingers to his forehead.
Perika grins, teeth glinting in the gloom.
tsew
Cello screams in shock as she appears in his face. He rolls to the side as her leg snaps up, wincing as it streaks through the space where his stomach just was. Throwing up a hand, he lets out a broad blast that consumes her entirely-
tsew
-only to go spinning into a hillside and obliterate it. Perika half-turns, grin widening as she looks over her shoulder at Tuba out of one eye.
His eyes widen. "Oh, crap." He aborts his charging and draws one arm back. "Special Beam Cann- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!"
Perika darts forward mid-word and throws her arms wide, releasing a wave of ki in all directions that scours the hilltop of grass and sends Tuba hurtling into the air. He cringes, ready for an impact-
thump
-only to slam into Perika's hand as she catches him on the way up. "I'm pretty sure Kakara calls that the Makankosappo," she says, smirking.
"Pretty sure Piccolo didn't actually speak Namekian," replies Perika. "...weirdly enough, come to think." She slams her fist on the katchin dome blocking out the suns' light in a specific sequence. "So I don't think he would've called it that either."
"Ugh, whatever, it still works," says Tuba, engaging his own flight and drifting out of her hand. "I mean...usually."
"Have to hit to have an effect," says Perika, shrugging. Around them, the dome begins to dissolve. "Ah, there's some sunlight!"
The others fly up around them. "Honestly starting to think we don't have much to offer you, Perika," says Cello.
"Kinda got our asses kicked," adds Tambourine. "Not even close." He folds his arms, scowling.
"Well, that just means that I have something to offer you!" she replies, grinning. "You'll catch up a bit, then I'll catch up a bit, and eventually Kakara'll get back and help us all get stronger!"
Oboe shrugs uncomfortably. "She didn't agree to train us, Perika, just you."
"Yeah, but she's generous," replies the saiyan woman. "She'll help out."
"Are you all done up there?"
The group looks down to the small group of mages standing on the grass below.
One mage waves up at them. "I know the training is fun for you all, but we've just been sitting around occasionally hearing the dome ring!"
Perika laughs awkwardly, drifting down to the ground. "Sorry, Cargo!" she calls. "Got a little caught up. We're done now." She touches down next to him.
He shakes his head, laughing. "Well, as long as we can go home. Getting late in the day, it's time for a drink."
"Food too!" she says. "I hope so, at least!"
"Some of the refugees have a meal going. Whole neighborhood's pitching in," says Cargo, lifting off. "I think they called it a potluck? Come on. You can see for yourself."
Perika grins, following. "Couldn't keep me away!"
* * *
With the coming invasion fleet, refugees fleeing the advancing forces have begun slowly filtering onto Namek.
As of yet, it's a trickle, the result of Namekian adventurers telling trusted friends and acquaintances to make quiet preparations so that the fleet doesn't realize that they've been compromised. But those early waves have established communities springing up around the Namekian villages, with plans and room for more once the word is out.
It's Perika's favorite place on the entire planet.
Tail wrapped securely around her waist, under her clothing, she absolutely wolves food down, her sparring partners looking on in bemusement.
"How do you eat so much of it?" asks Cello, cocking his head and eyeing her musclebound stomach. "Like, where does it even go?"
Tuba smirks. "Pretty sure it goes up."
Perika swallows. "Yeah, yeah. Screw all of you, drink your water."
The four men each take a sip in tandem, eyeing her with amusement.
She snorts. "If you really wanna know, it all goes to these." She slaps her arms, bulging with rippling muscles. "Muscle mass doesn't pay for itself for most animals. I can't pull stuff out of water the way you can." She shoves a plate of food their way. "I know you can eat, though. Try some! This stuff is delicious!"
"Pass," replies Oboe, pushing it back. "Like, yeah, sure, we can, but it really doesn't play well with heavy exercise."
"Cramps like you wouldn't believe," says Tambourine.
Perika rolls her eyes, picking up a leg from some kind of massive bird. "Oh wow, cramps. Can't possibly imagine what those are like!"
The namekians all wince.
She chuckles. "Poor baby boys."
"I refuse to believe that's natural," says Cello.
"Ask Kakara when she gets back, she'll back me up," replies Perika.
"No thank you," says Oboe. "I'm not particularly interested in hassling the super saiyan."
"She's not that bad," snorts Perika.
"She regularly blasted you into the ground," points out Oboe.
"And I asked for it," says Perika.
"Saiyans," sighs Tambourine, shaking his head. "I don't know how Bassoon does it." A slight smirk gives the joke away.
Perika flips him off regardless. Gotta thank Kakara for teaching me that one. "You're just jealous."
"Of course we are," says Cello. "We aren't going to complain about it, though."
She flashes him a grin. "Thanks, guys." She settles in to eat for a moment, her friends sipping at their water.
After a moment, Tambourine speaks up again. "Any word yet on how we'll be deployed when the invasion comes?"
Perika swallows, sighing. "Depends on how much stronger I can get," she says. "If it's Haila, they're saying that when Kakara fights him, I might be able to support her, or maybe take care of any soldiers who manage to get inside the dome with him. If I stay stuck here, though..." She shrugs. "Guess I can hide my tail, tie up my hair, and act like a human champion fighting with you all." She ruefully touches the spiky, black locks of hair cascading down her back and over her shoulders.
"I think you'll be fine," says Oboe. "You kick our asses all the time and you're still getting stronger. Once the Scion returns, I'm sure you'll really hit the jets."
"I hope so," she says.
She glances around the bustling market, at the people from a dozen races filling it. The smells, the sound of conversation, the laughter and joy at a good meal shared. All of it underlaid with an air of tension and dreadful anticipation. This is a home, but for people fleeing theirs. This is temporary. It is a moment of connection and peace, but in the midst of a world turned mad and cruel.
"Gonna be a good fight, right?" asks Tuba, grinning and nudging her in the arm. "I'll bet that gets your blood pumping!"
Perika's eyes linger on a family down the line, a mother settling a young child while his siblings eat quietly. Then she shakes herself, glancing back to her friend and grinning. "Sure does," she says, taking a bite. "If they have anything that can give me a real challenge!"
The namekians groan, Tuba shoving her. She cackles, tossing her hair.
* * *
Old Namek did not have nights; while New Namek was similar in atmospheric terms, it only had one sun and lacked the accident of astrology that placed its predecessor at a livable distance between a cluster of three. Thus, it did have nights, and the namekians who made it their home had adapted to the idea of sleeping when it got dark out pretty seamlessly. They had very good ears, but absolute crap night vision. They never needed it at home.
Perika, creeping out into the grasslands beyond the refugee settlement, wondered what Planet Vegeta had been like, that her night vision was excellent by comparison.
Probably overthinking it, she mused. Kakara told me that humans are like this too. Probably just that we had to move around at nighttime every now and then.
Coming to a halt in a small stand of Ajisa trees on a hill overlooking the sleeping town, Perika starts stretching, rolling tension and stiffness out of her muscles and calming her breathing. After a few moments, she takes a stance and starts running forms, boxing with the air.
She keeps her power level low as she does, remembering-
* * *
Months ago.
She screams, aura raging around her. Five million, ten million, fifteen, and just creeping up to the sixteen that she has barely scrounged her way to after months of nearly continuous practice against all of Kakara's warnings about how even that was an exceptionally high cap, there wouldn't be much more, and she should focus on transforming instead.
All of it, and then hold. Breath. Let the dust settle. Lock eyes with her Scion, currently sitting pretty at a measly ten.
Kakara smirks.
Perika snarls, pride stung. She dashes forward with a roar, fist wound back-
Kakara ducks, crouching almost all the way to the ground and stepping past Perika whip-crack fast in a loping, smooth stride that makes Perika's thighs ache just to look at it.
Then, Perika feels a hand closing around her ankle.
She wails as she goes tumbling, her foot wrenched clean out from under her just as it touches the ground. As she rolls across the ground, she feels Kakara lunging forward and kicking her, again and again, keeping her going until finally she smacks into the dome and lays still, groaning.
"Sloppy!" calls Kakara, bouncing from one foot to the other. "C'mon, Perika, you can do better than that!"
Perika growls, hauling herself to her feet and scowling down at her Scion. The other woman grins up at her, unbothered by the difference in height that Perika knew for a fact some would find intimidating.
Perika snorts. "I'm not a toy."
Kakara's expression instantly falls, guilt crossing her face. She settles down. "Sorry. Yeah, no, that's not fair. Just..." She shrugs, giggling. "This is a weird feeling for me!"
"You're better than most of the warriors," grumbles Perika.
"And that is strange to me," says Kakara. "I'm a good fighter back home. I worked hard for it. But I'm not top-tier, not by a long shot. Heck, a lot of the warriors here are a lot more developed than me. I don't have too much of a style to speak of." She settles down to the grass with her familiar, eerie grace, legs smoothly folding up beneath her as she goes. "I mostly get by on my fundamentals." She smirks, tilting her head. "And you're trying to distract me."
Perika rubs at her hair. "Ha...yeah, I guess you're right. Your techniques, they..." She grimaces, fumbling for a word. 'They don't come naturally,' she thinks, which Kakara repeats aloud. Perika nods in thanks. "They don't come naturally. I've been trying, but..."
"Reminds me of some really old stories," says Kakara. "Don't worry," she says, teeth flashing in a sudden grin as Perika tenses. "No storytime. Not right now, anyway."
Perika laughs awkwardly, embarrassed at being caught out that easily. Her Scion...really...likes to tell stories. "Like our people on Planet Vegeta?" she asks.
"Exactly," says Kakara. "You can be better than that, Perika."
Perika ducks her head, looking away and folding her arms. "I know!" she says. "I...I know. It's just hard. I have to learn years in month."
"Months," says Kakara. "And that construction was a bit awkward." She flashes a suggested alternative by telepathy and carries straight on. "You're not wrong, though. There's a lot to pick up, and that's why we're trying to help you transform too. But you'll always fight better with both. Jaffur..." She trails off, her gaze distant. Her brow furrows.
Perika swallows. Kakara always gets like this when her home comes up, and especially regarding the people who were closest to her. It hurts to watch. She's clearly feeling a lot of pain, but the worst part actually comes next, as she remembers, herself, snaps back, clears her throat, and-
"He's the best fighter I've ever met," she says, voice too light to be natural. "Alive, anyway. Powerful and skilled. You need both, Perika." She smiles; it looks very convincing.
Perika's right hand, tucked between her arm and her chest, tightens into a fist. Yeah, that, she thinks. I really hate that. "I'll try," she says, trying to keep her voice level. Judging by the furrow that appears on Kakara's brow, she doesn't entirely succeed, so she unwinds her arms -- carefully flexing her right hand to take away the sting of her fingernails from her palm -- and takes a stance. "Can you show me again?"
Kakara visibly considers calling her on the obvious lie for a moment before letting it pass. She stands, as smoothly as she sat, her tail lashing idly. "Sure," she says. "Let's start from the top."
* * *
-Perika shakes her head, focusing on her forms. She delves deeper and deeper into them, one move chaining into the next with the smoothness of constant practice. She feels the burn of exercise and the rush of endorphins. Teeth glint through her lips as something approaching the rush of battle fills her. More moves, more forms. A punch; pivot into a kick. Miming a blast into the dirt, but keeping her power suppressed. Hopping up to snap her leg through the air as her imaginary opponent leaps up to dodge the shot. Hanging in midair, lunging forward to exploit the opening. Punch, kick, a proper flurry now that she's unmoored from the ground. Knee to the gut, push back, frame the target and Kikoh-
And then, a light clicks on. "You're up late."
Perika nearly swallows her tongue, pinwheeling in the air to look behind her with wide eyes, hanging upside-down.
Cargo stands there, arms folded, a flashlight in his hands.
She stares back at him. "...hi!"
"Hi," he replies, one eyebrow raised. "You do your best fighting on a night of crap sleep, is that it?"
She flushes. "It's just for a few minutes!"
"It's already been over thirty," he says.
She blinks. Slowly, she glances down at her watch; sure enough, she's lost the better part of an hour. "...oh."
The mage responsible for supervising her training sessions sighs, stepping past her towards one of the trees. "You're just lucky you didn't touch any of the Ajisa. The Elder would've had your tail if you'd broken any."
"I'm more careful than that!" objects Perika. "I know how important they are to you."
"I know," he replies, touching one of the branches. "But the Elder's a real stickler for the trees. Probably would've gotten on your case if you even put a leaf out of place."
"You're exaggerating," she huffs.
He turns, finally grinning at her. "Maybe a little."
She chuckles, folding her arms and cocking her head, not bothering to right herself again. "I'll come to bed. Soon. Just one more form."
"'One form,' means, 'One form,' with you, Perika, but only until you're far enough into the form to forget that you promised that," he replies, arching an eyebrow again. "Come now. There'll be training tomorrow. With katchin, so you can actually power up. Pinky swear."
She scowls at him. "I'm not a child!"
"No, but your teacher is," says Cargo. "She taught me that one. Well, I saw her do it to Bassoon once, anyway."
Perika frowns. "A child? Kakara's a grown woman!"
Cargo shakes his head. "Kakara had a growth spurt. Apparently you saiyans do it all at once. She had hers early. She looks like an adult, but she's thirteen years old."
Perika feels her jaw go slack; a moment later, she flips back upright again so that it can properly drop. "What?"
"Yeah, your Scion's a kid," says Cargo. "Hell of a kid, but still." He tilts his head. "What, she never mentioned it?"
"It never came up," mutters Perika, mind racing over old conversations.
Cargo hums. "Well, now you know. You learned something. The day wasn't wasted. Good job." He scratches at his scalp. "Maybe it's genetic. Explains why the two of you never stop and take a break."
Perika scowls, thinking over all the times she's seen or spoken to Kakara, and...drawing a complete blank on a single time when the Scion wasn't doing something important. "...I don't think so," she murmurs. She thinks again of that reflexive daze, flinch, and placid smile any time Kakara thinks of home.
Not privy to her inner thoughts, Cargo shrugs. "If you say so." He yawns. "Now come on, let's get back. Gotta set a good example, don't you?"
Perika snorts, shaking herself out of her ruminations. "I was literally born a few months ago."
"As an adult!" Cargo chews on the inside of his cheek contemplatively. "Kinda."
She scoffs. "All right, screw you, asshole."
He snorts. "Riveting. Put that one in a poetry contest."
Perika rolls her eyes and turns, stepping towards the town. "Fine, fine. Mood's ruined anyway, now. You killed it."
He sputters. "I- I killed the mood?! You were sparring!"
"It was a lovely moment for training by starlight," she says, her customary, airy tone settling back into place. "And you ruined it."
"I ruined you punching the air! Come on, Perika!"
She snickers and folds her hands behind her head as he scurries after her. While he isn't looking, though, a slight frown glides over her face again, still stuck on those moments of disorientation and rapid self-collection.
I'm getting better, Kakara, she thinks, gazing up at the stars as though she can find the war Kakara's visiting right now. Stronger. Better. And once this is done, you and I have a conversation we need to share.
Perika, her caps shattered in her final spar with Kakara, is continuing her training, her strength and skill growing in bounds. In her training, she develops bonds with her partners, the namekians closest to her on New Namek. And her thoughts on her wayward Scion grow more troubled.
Perika is determined to improve both her skill and her strength, but she has a particular focus, as she grows, and after months of effort, she has a crowning achievement to her name. By the time Kakara returns to New Namek, what has Perika achieved?
[ ] Perika has developed a personal technique around which the nucleus of her own style is beginning to form.
[ ] Perika has grown more adept at harnessing the wellspring of power within her, able to deliberately invoke it, with great effort.
[ ] Perika has taken up the use of a weapon -- a sword forged in the heart of a star, gathered by an adventurer years back.

Heya, y'all! Lookie what I have here~
We're heading back to Kakara after this; this was meant to be a brief series of updates, but as you see, 4,000 words later it was a short story that stood on its own. Good to see y'all again! Enjoy!
[X] Perika has developed a personal technique around which the nucleus of her own style is beginning to form.
[X] Perika has taken up the use of a weapon -- a sword forged in the heart of a star, gathered by an adventurer years back.
Like both of these! The sword sounds shiny and the techinque sounds a little intriguing. Might end up ditching one of these for supporting the one I feel most inspired by tommorow if votes req it. Beyond that... @PoptartProdigy
[X] [Write-in] Perika has developed an exceptional talent for basic blasts.
In that like, it fights how she fights here and might be a neat contrast, here? Not sure I especially care for that nesscarily but.
Hope we'll get a bit more concrete info on how she is, now.
How about [] Perika has developed a talent for created techniques on the fly. They're surprisingly effective, and she takes to the creation like a fish to water.

Master of a 1000 techniques... Kinda. If Perika invents them on the fly its moreso invention of, unless we're saying her mastery is of ki control.

I like the idea of having someone really good at coming up with off the wall techniques. Plus, this gives Poptart the opportunity to come up with their own cool techniques!
e: Plus, it plays into what she could have learned from Kakara: Taking the Oddball trait and running with it.
ok, better to give a quick skim to past events, I'm a bit rusty.
so... I'll start from page 17 of reader mode.
Summary/Bullet Points since our visit to Heaven, right after abandoning Garenhuld
1) We visited Heaven. Our best way into Heaven would be through Hell, but we need to be stronger. Our current ideas for that are perfect Multiform, Spirit Saiyan and SSJ2. Gohan, The God of Heroes, bullied Dazarel (the currently pocket dragon) into helping us.
2)We end up in Bassoon's head while he's breaking through the Siege to Arcosa.
3)we get up to speed on the galaxy. There's another saiyan descended from Tarble somewhere, Toru. Dazarel hates the Namekians because of their "stuffing dragons into dragon balls" thing. Frieza and the enemy had a fight centuries ago, and while he's presumably around he hasn't been seen since.
4)We're checked for magic. Interesting tidbit: the saiyan masque (the enchantment that seals away our saiyan nature to appear as a human) is apparently a masterpiece by other magician's standards. The Saiyans only do sealing, but they do it incredibly well.
5)visions. most relevant ones: Namek attacked in a year, Toru (the other saiyan descended from Tarble) killed by the Enemy in 4 years, also a true prophecy (that WILL be true).
"A YEAR UNTIL THE END; A YEAR BEFORE THE FALL
NEW NAMEK TURNS, STILL UNAWARE
"THAT WHICH HAS LAIN DORMANT MUST AWAKEN
AND THOSE WHO HAVE SCATTERED MUST RETURN
"BEFORE THE BLOW COMES AND THE LAST DRAGON FALLS SILENT."
6)The New Cold Empire is only around 60 years old. They're mostly winning against the "Kingdom" of the old king of the universe, that tentacled thing seen during db super at one point, who mostly kept his power in the past by bluffing that he had the support of the Z warriors. Another polity, the "Alliance", is supported by 17, 18 and Buu.
7)There's a bounty on saiyan heads, people report to the Enemy their locations. Dazarel reveals that the Sight is a physich power. Kanassan Sight, passed through Bardock. Psychich powers consist in changing the world through raw willpower (presumably the same source of the willpower pushes, Yuki). Usually seers only have the one gift, other psychics usually have 2 or 3, rarely 4. We learn to read other people's thoughts, something unexpected of a seer.
8)There's a whole thing about getting to Namek while avoiding a bounty hunter (Tariq) trying to kill Bassoon, but it hardly matters
9)We discover we have interman mental (psychic) powers. for now, mostly mental shields reinforcing our ki-based defenses.
10)we start work on perfect multiform, and learn to gift ki to Bassoon from his Mindscape.
11)We find out the "Old Family" option for when we leave Bassoon is 18. lore dump about the Alliance, namely that while both it and the Kingdom are too worried about the New Cold Empire to worry about each other, they are NOT in friendly relationships.
12)We reach Namek and talk with Guru.
13)Porunga apparently has more trouble with information gathering than most other things. Implication that Porunha has divine ki. We learn to manifest a body from Bassoon's mind, but it only lasts less than 5 minutes. Porunga apparently creates a saiyan girl we end up adopting. We call her Perika and kind of adopt her.
an interesting quote:
First of all, it might be somewhat misleading to refer to both yuuki and shouki as mental ki, although they are both non-physical. The translation, as often happens from Japanese to English, is somewhat imprecise, is that genki is bodily energy (obvious enough; this is what the wider galaxy has down pretty well, as they seem to treat ki as a function of the body; see their fascination with mutants), shouki is mental energy (right-mindedness, strategy, calm, keeping your center; this is the self-discipline part of things, and right away you can see why most of the Freeza Force likely had little enough of this), and yuuki is one's courage (again, translation somewhat inexact; consider courage, willpower, spirit, determination, etc. Strength of character, perhaps most broadly).
And Kakara knows all of this already. Her ki control skill is at exceptional; she is a master of ki, even as young as she is. This is one of the reasons she's holding up under the world-shattering trauma of the Unsealing so well; she has an incredibly strong and developed sense of self, and a very deliberately honed ability to endure hardship.
Now, as to what Dazarel has to say about the distinction between yuuki and psychic willpower...
'Absolutely nothing. They are the same thing, applied two different ways.'
14)Dazarel swears in his own mind to get free and get revenge one day. we know, as we were reading his thoughts.
15)there's some weird psychic trap in Bassoon's mind, containing dragonballs capable of summoning the REAL Porunga. somehow. or, at least we THINK it was (part of) the real Porunga. He promises us a single wish in exchange for freeing him (some of the ideas: portable time chamber, or freeing all saiyans under Dandeer's mind control) . Also we get a vision about young Bassoon searching for the dragonballs to resurrect his grandfather (dead of old age, so it wouldn't have worked).
16)Main magics of the Namekians: Creation, Healing, Unlocking. Bassoon also has movement. Ki trumps magic in direct contests, but any clever mage will not contest it directly. keep not the ki user still, but the air around it. Don't force a mind to obey, but remove the reasons to disobey in the first place.
17)note: Bassoon is Guru's son. the alien invasion is still on route to Garenhuld.
18) Frieza lore dump. Basically he conquered part of the galaxy, recruited lots of champions to train, talked about the danger of the enemy, then fought him and disappeared. and all the champions went their own way. Our theory is that he might have deliberately engineered a galaxy full of threats of various power levels for future saiyans to use as stepping stones/challenges in their power growth.
19)Bassoon's uncle Berimbau unlocks our psychic potential. Better shields to start with. Perika is apparently a saiyan mutant of some kind, and can go beyond the 15 million cap without transforming. Maybe she can even become a Legendary Super Saiyan? Time will tell.
20) quote from an update after a 5 month hiatus reminds us of the current crew we're traveling with. We're exploring Tamrii in search of the future invading fleet, as we want to gather more intel. SPECIFICALLY, who the invading prince is, as we're only a match for the weakest of them.
So, our last update before my latest hiatus was introducing us to the new team who'll be our companions for this next mission. Bad time to fall out of contact, right after we've met them, so let's have a quick refresher.
So, our last update before my latest hiatus was introducing us to the new team who'll be our companions for this next mission. Bad time to fall out of contact, right after we've met them, so let's have a quick refresher.
Lyre: Tall, muscular, and unusually dark-skinned by namekian standard, Lyre habitually works with Flute, the two moving about as partners in their adventures in the wider galaxy. One of the team's heavy hitters, Lyre clocks in at 27.3 million. He's a fairly serious and unsmiling man. His friendship with Flute is very much a match of opposites.
Flute: Short and stocky, Flute is Lyre's partner in adventure. Actually the strongest person present on the team -- aside from you -- Flute reads at a solid 29.5 million. He smiles often, usually has a joke, and always has time to get a rise out of Lyre.
Bugle: Bugle is fairly unexceptional in terms of appearance, except for a fairly spectacular scar coming straight through his left eye. He's your team's blaster -- which he says is a specialty he prefers due to poor luck in hand-to-hand fighting. Bugle is fairly withdrawn, but seems to be warm with Bassoon. His power level comes in at 22.4 million.
Snare: Snare is extremely tall and very lanky. He doesn't look like a fighter at all. Indeed, he's not on the team to be a fighter. Snare's power level is only 1.1 million. Most Exiles could flatten him in a fight, and there are plenty of champions in the wider galaxy that could do the same. He's along for his wide network of contacts and extensive experience in getting to know the places of the galaxy; mission control, in other words. He's a loner by habit and fairly unassertive.
Bassoon: Your host, Bassoon has a picture listed back in, "Old Friends," which is still good. Coming in at a solid 27 million, Bassoon is a ki fighter and a momentum mage. Most of his activities deal in regions towards Arcosa and its eternal siege, so he'll mostly be relying on Snare for this one. A refugee called Tariq is still out looking for Bassoon from the last time Bassoon ran the blockade around Arcosa. He's on decent terms with everybody.
21)If we attack the leading Royal before they reach New Namek, we get Frigid (I think the strongest of them) involved. So, we can't start hostilities before the assault on New Namek.
22)Dazarel's teacher never taught him how to train. Only how to eat ki for power. He was probably setting him up to fail in the long run. We start using Dazarel's desire for strength as a way to get closer to him, and begin teaching him our ways. specifically the genkidama, as presumably he can't learn it without going through something of a change of heart.
23)Cell's Perfect Multiform was not perfect. the clones were actually really fragile.
24)On Garenhuld: The misfits are training with the Senzu, they're not exactly happy with the condescension from most of them.
25)The Senzu take advantage of an opening to send Dandelor (and Jenny) to the houses of Kakara and Jaffur to get some of their personal items to use for his spells. They recapture Kakara's mother, who had fallen to Dandeer's spells. Dandelor came up with a spell to absorb and redirect impacts from enemy blows, allowing Raditz (as a ssj) to somewhat keep up with the FPSSJ lords.
26)massive progress in training: we can use presentsight in combat, Perfect Multiform is (barely) viable as a finisher against weaker enemies, but it's extremely draining to use. We also learned how to drag our host into their mindscape (potentially useful in the future with hosts unable to do that on their own)
We also progress with the Dodonpa, which can now go through weaker/unfocused ki blasts, and have ki refinement to a stable 10% boost, same as Jaffur many years ago. We can also charge the genkidama from Bassoon's mind, which means it can be trained again too.
27) we get some intel on the fleet. namely, there's a transport ship with shielding keeping who's inside a secret. We've also identified the command ship. Their plan is likely to force a ground fight, but it might be possible to ambush them in space.
28)Lore Dump on New Namek: they mostly stayed isolated for centuries, and only recently-ish started protecting a few close worlds, which has led to them gaining the attention of the Cold Empire and the incoming invasion.
29)also the Frost Demon Royals REALLY want to face saiyans, because of the meaning to their shared history. They're their legendary rivals and foes, beings who could stand up to gods, and they want to relive those legends.
...well, I've checked this all. I can now ACTUALLY proceed to the new update. Hopefully this is of help to someone other than me
