When it comes to Dragon ball Z forget everything you know about biology. There is no way Saiyan are the product of evolution. There is no way that the super Saiyan transformation is a product of evolution when for most of Saiyan history no one could do it. And that is no where near the only biological impossibly of Saiyans.

When I try and come up with plausible explanations the only thing I can come up with is that Saiyans are the result of intelligent design and the civilization that made them was destroied by a SS2 that could not control itself. Blasting all back to the stone age.

That's honestly my theory as well, that Saiyans were the result of some ancient human civilization's super soldier program that went horribly wrong.

Specifically on the subject of transformations, it wouldn't be entirely surprising if a sapient species

We didn't evolve to be able to read, but we can, and it's now a pivotal feature of all our cultures, one that vastly amplifies all our other skills and abilities. Our civilization is to the way we lived in the ancestral environment as a super-saiyan is to the "average saiyan warrior" state.* And a lot of it is, arguably, because we were able to use evolved 'force multipliers' and various 'hacks' that take advantage of our inbuilt capabilities in unforeseen ways.

Maybe saiyans just do the same thing with their ki. Consequently, once they become powerful and disciplined enough, they have potential to do things they never evolved to do...

I suspect that their potential to achieve divinity isn't biological, it's a function of the fact that saiyans have uniquely... well-attuned... ki. The typical saiyan can reach a level of ki manipulation and skill that only the most exceptional mutants of other races could ever hope for, and they can do so very naturally. That feature could easily make the difference for a ki user seeking to achieve godhood.

Also them turning into giant monkeys in defiance of conservation of mass. Especially with it only on the full moon when their home planet only has a full moon every 7 years.

Well, a species that's evolved to use some of ki's weirder and wilder potential might very well have physics-breaking abilities. In a world where biology has innate magical energies that violate the laws of physics as they apply to inanimate matter, you can bet on evolution adapting creatures to exploit those energies if at all possible.

As for the oozaru form... Yeah, something like that could just about make sense as a 'mating season' behavior, but that's so conspicuously far from the way the saiyans actually behave that if it ever served that role, it certainly doesn't now and hasn't within the past few million years of saiyan evolutionary history.

Eh, most life is intelligent design. Remember, the principle job of a Supreme Kai is to create and spread life. Which explains why most sapient life is humanoid: they're basing it on themselves. Humans being so common is the gods getting lazy/Shin not being very good.

Personally, my theory is that Saiyans, originally were just a slapdash creation of the Kai's that, a few beneficial Ki Mutations later, went far beyond what they were originally designed to do. And possible involved crossbreeding with other races.

I mean, is Frieza really any more implausible?

That is why I say that for Dragon ball Z in general you should forget everything you know about biology. Namekian are almost as bad.

Namekians are worse insofar as they're genetically sophisticated beings with a (presumably) complex genome that evolved despite reproducing asexually, that have an innate ki-based fusion ability that cannot possibly have been inborn/evolved, even in the stretched sense that oozaru could have been a mating season thing. Plus, Namekians throw the laws of physics out the window with their ability to subsist on water and regenerate large amounts of tissue with minimal effort even without transformations.

At least a saiyan has to explicitly change physical forms to violate conservation laws.

This is cut off and I'm not sure where you were going with it.
Specifically on the subject of transformations, it wouldn't be entirely surprising if a sapient species had the potential for transformations they never underwent in the ancestral environment. Hell, in Dragonball humans arguably have access to a transformation (Roshi's max-power form is fairly clearly a transformation, at least insofar as Piccolo being able to turn into a giant is)... And we know damn well humans didn't evolve to do that.

I am seized by the objectively irrational -- yet situationally-warranted -- urge to bitch about chef's knives being so damn sharp. Update is delayed until tomorrow while my thumb heals, folks, but I'll go ahead and close us out here.

Can't say I am surprised.

But I hope we also get good Grandpa Gohan time. We miss him.

Also, where's Namek? He should be able to tell us that....and I completely forgot to ask! Or vote for it.

Maybe next time?

Back when I was selling knifes I remember telling people that sharp knifes actually tend to cause less injures. Most injures are caused by dull knifes when you are forced to put a lot of muscle behind them and they jerk free.

Thus, "objectively irrational, yet situationally-warranted." I was cleaning my knife and my finger slipped. Ordinarily I'm quite pleased to have it sharp.

But we already know how Saiyans came to be:

Luckily, that is not in fact an ancestor to the Saiyans, that is either an ancestor to the Truffles, or a simply a fellow sapient species that became extinct(possibly eaten by the Saiyans).

Remember, Saiyans were not native to that planet.
Are you implying DBZ Abridged lied to me? :o

Wiki says you're right though - Saiyans come from Sadala, apparently. It's a shame we aren't descended from purple blobs, but I suppose it means Poptart doesn't have to worry about our Legendary Saiyan Masque achieving Ultimate Purple Power.
