A thought came to me:

Since "A Frightful Sight" is pretty locked-in by now as one choice, it might actually turn out to be *beneficial* for Russ. After all, until now he held the rather racist belief that Toons just CAN´T be truly malicious and murderous - even discovering that one killed Hawk only shook him a bit in that belief.

So why wouldn´t seeing another Toon be like finally disabuse him of that notion and allow him to look at "The Case of the Murderous Toon" in a more..*egalitarian* light?

Something to consider...
It came up before that he doesn't consider Negaduck a Toon. His words were something to the effect of "I don't know what kind of twisted excuse they have in the Negaverse" or something, but he doesn't count Negaduck as being a real one since he's from another dimension.

As a shrink, Technor would call that "disassociation", "avoidance" and arguably "dehumanization" - all mental tricks of the human mind to feel less guilty about hurting or killing other living beings.
TV Tropes on the other hand (speaking of which, anyone willing to work on Doofquests page there? It´s still "stuck" shortly after *Twelfth Night*, you know) would file that under "No True Scotsman".

Either way, it´s him trying to double down on his Toon racism (positive discrimination is still discrimination, especially you atuomatically discriminate negatively towards anyone not of that "pure group" as well) - a behaviour which needs to stop for him to move forward.

I'm tempted to go for the Dream Queen option.
As others have already mentioned, the Dream Queen crisis is likely to be much smaller in scale and personal in type. Specifically, focused on Russ.
The difference in type means that the aftermath of Negaduck is unlikely to make us much more vulnerable to this crisis than we already were.
Picking 'Spy on Doof' this turn, plus 'Look through Records' and 'Talk with Bossman' next turn should be a good step towards preparing us for the crisis. And if we 'rejoin' the USA, which we really should do next turn, there's a small chance we could get his loyalty to 75, definitely enought to learn his last secret.
A third possible point in favor of this option is our ability to collaborate with the imaginary institute in the hopes of getting some useful research options to prepare.

There is however one issue: The option that takes away Russ's traits for three turns might also make him more vulnerable to this crisis if it happens within those three turns.
So the question is, will it? Three turns means the next turn, the one where Negaduck attacks, and the one after that. When does the moon wane?

I don't particularly want to, but if we rejoin the government, that's an effective +10 to Russ' loyalty.

Losing the +10 on toon or Mindscape rolls is going to suck for preparation, but IMO not as much as not knowing who's coming for us, nor giving Negaduck ideas.

Still, I guess there's a case to be made to get no info and the DQ, and just prepare for everyone. Get Megavolt's ???, tank the social opprobrium for cutting the power, research exfoliants, get into the banana mascot business, learn businessspeak... it could work, it's just annoyingly inefficient.

--[x] [Intrigue] Investigate Negaduck's plan (Russ) [Personal Attention]
DC 145/155+ (62% CoS) (4% CF 6% CS)
Fallback Martial DC 200
2 27+18(Doof)+38(Russ)+10(Tooned In)+5(Secret Keeper)+10(Just a Dream- Yang Talisman)+17(Council)+5(Loyalty)+10(XP)=140
Bare Failure
Fallback Martial: 97+14+13+10+10=144
Failure
I was going to ask QMs if Personal Attention doesn't apply to reroll the Fallback DC as well, since technically it's still the same action. Then I saw that Russ rolled 97 on the Fallback and the only way for him to succeed would have been a Nat 100 plus explosion of over 8. But still, I think it's important to establish the precedent.

Personal attention does not affect fallback rolls. When a character is rolling fallback, they're on their own.

I for one am looking forwards to this opportunity to potentially kill a Hero Unit.

Thanks for the information. I was going to also ask if Russ' trait Secret Keeper wouldn't apply to the fallback Martial making both of the DCs bare failures, because it sounds like maybe it could:

Secret Keeper: +5 to actions meant to hide your own activities, +5 to actions meant to uncover hidden information. Keep in mind that Russ will not use this trait to the detriment of his actual employers.

But honestly, y'all already gave us a pretty sweet deal on an action that was by rights a failure, so asking for more benevolence would be too much bellyaching, even from RPG players.

Why has Russ in particular out of all the Hero units been perpetually so vulnerable? He got Twilight Zone'd, he's at risk of dying to Negaduck, and then the Dream Queen is eventually coming if we accept it or not. I guess it's just random chance, but if he does die I won't be utterly shocked like if Janna gets killed on a random mission.

Well, this is the very first sentence about Russ in the quest:
"Someone very special has been unlocked."
Being "very special" isn't entirely a good thing, it seems.

Russ' Job is to stick his nose into the weird and wacky.

This means he's more likely to interact with evil wizards and dream demons.

He is an OC. Presumably the QM feels more comfortable torturing and killing off their own creation

To also be fair Russ was and still is our best Intrigue unit so when there is a risky Intrigue action to take we send him there, and just by that it means that he would be in danger more times than others

I don't think the QMs have a specific option in mind that is the secret path to winning everything from now on that we're supposed to somehow guess?

So, I don't think it's fruitful to try to decipher what the QMs "want" from us.

It depends on the dice.
Fair enough, I guess. Still, this is giving me my doubts about the Dream Queen, even with the fact it seems the least bad of the options...

After all the complaints about how annoying it is to keep having to react to disasters each turn and having to delay stuff we want to do, I am going to be so disappointed in us if we vote for the dream queen to cause a disaster.

I simply can not understand the logic of "We won't prepare for a disaster if it isn't hitting us, so let's cause a disaster to hit us so we prepare for it."

I think that's insane. Don't cause disasters if you can help it. They're bad.

We've got negaduck, whatever is going to happen in Occult if Malf goes Lovemuffin, whatever is going to happen in San Fransokyo, and whatever the moon thing is.

Our plate is FULL of potential problems. We really don't need to schedule another to pop off right after moon.

I'll flip a coin on whether I'll go for a safe bet or a gambit pileup longshot on the other vote...
1 - Safe Bet, 2 - Gambit Pileup
Light threw 1 2-faced dice. Total: 2
2 2

Dream Queen is happening anyway, and we'll have even more delayed actions if we fuck up Negaduck rolls and have to spend multiple actions rebuilding damaged infrastructure.

Choose 2 failures
Vote separately from the personals

[X] In the Queen's Court
[X] A Frightful Sight

[x] Plan: Glitz, Glamour, and Glory
-[x] (Khan) Study history
-[x] (Monogram) Take an acrobatics course
-[x] (Norm) Commit Heroism
-[x] (Agent Russ) Spy on Doof
-[x] (Dennis) Train with Maui Mallard
-[x] (Janna) Study magic with Feldrake
-[x] (Jumba) Finish incubating Subject T.K.
-[x] (Lizzy) Build backup tunnels
-[x] (Tobe) Train with Maui Mallard
-[x] (Kitsune) Check in with Janna
-[x] (Alan) Work with ???
-[x] (Cruella) Make an Exotic Coat
-[x] (Kermit) Look for the Muppets
-[x] (QMS) Practice Theatrics

A lot of these personal actions are self-evident. But the main one I want to argue for is Russ's "Spy on Doof". We've done a lot of good this past turn from building security bunkers to curing diseases and starting to do things that indicate we're getting over our delusion such as setting up a lobby, so I think doing this now could be good to raise Russ's loyalty in preparation for a chat next turn.
