The powers of midas seem kinda.... limited if they are touch only. Lazers, guns, blasts, bows, thrown rocks, even melee weapons like a spear give you distance. I'd be much more afraid of her other magic.

So many good items here... I hate to disappoint Janna and Felldrake for the lack of acquiring dark artefacts but Russ is the kind of person whose advice you heed:
[X] Plan: Expert Advice

"I know what you're doing."

"Oh?" Xanatos whispers back, quirking a single eyebrow.

"I don't know if you're just being opportunistic, or what, but it doesn't matter. I may agree with you, but I'm not going to let you strongarm the Doctor into this."

"Is that a hint of loyalty I detect?"

"Call it a desire not to have the rest of the country under your thumb too."

"Well then. I suppose you'll just have to find a way to convince him to keep things in check yourself. We both know what happens if you don't."

Russ glares.

I personally didn't like the "Talk with the Bossman: Russ" part of the winning vote but now it seems like it'll end up being extremely relevant... we even rolled pretty well for it; an 88 probably won't give us everything but it should at least be good for giving us context.

.

On a side note, a negaverse Xanatos would probably crazy here; I mean, I was thinking it'd be fun to just see his thoughts even as far back as the car ride here but so many things have happeed in such a short time

Man, it feels like a mistake to not be bidding on arguably the best resource for learning magic in existence when we're so new to magic. The talisman is good, but so good as to forgo bidding on anything else?

[X] Plan: Expert Advice

Here's a thought: next turn were probably going to have two new occult actions from this, right? Study Ninja Scrolls and Study Yang Amulet (I think Sandwich will be stewardship or learning). Both are from Asia(I think), and both would be study actions, so Kitsune would be great at them and Janna good. However, neither are Goblin Foxy, so Kitsune will need to be out. I doubt any will be within Crit-able range so putting Janna on it will be viable, I think, but it won't be easy to get Tobe to do the ninja magic, unless it's a personal action for him/them, which it might be.

Yeah, I second this, with as much energy as possible. We came here to get stuff to further our magical instruction, and there isn't anything better for that than an Encantus. Yes, the mental combat abilities of the talisman are very useful and important, but I think that it can be obtained through other avenues of research and magical development. The Encantus will help with magical research, which will help us develop mental defenses and combat abilities, but the Yang Talisman will not help us with gaining more magical understanding.

I actually wanted the Morganian Encantus to make Janna happy, but at this point this is...well, it's still pretty hopeless, but I'm not giving up yet.

I would have voted this regardless of Russ's advice, but I am glad it is coincidentaly helping my collection aspirations! :p
That seems to be the implication, but I haven't seen much evidence one way or another short of meta-based reasoning.
Old comment, but I would like to point out no one made "meta-based reasononing" for it being part of the same set. Xanatos explicitly dropped that a part of the Shengxiao, which is the same set as the talisman we have, would be here. It wasn't some kind of "guess" or the like.
....Janna now HAS to accidentally call Doofenshmirtz dad now. I will cry.
Nah, it'd be a bit creepy. She still has a living, non-abusive father.
Cookbook Coin Flip: Failure!
Jo-Lan Coin Flip: Success!
Darn! Lady luck favored the boring option instead of the cool one!
Interesting

If I'm putting together the clues right here I think we've been getting the situation over here reversed. he is not propping up the US government like we thought he's secureing allies in the military for when shit breaks down.

His little speech here was to push Doof towards consolidation of his power base and not trusting it to the people.

this implies he wants Doof to be an outside power for some reason. And this would somehow help Xanatos get his claws into Doof possibly by helping him run his new true nation ( as we would struggle with that until we got Rodger and character development that he has no way of knowing about)

... Xany might be planing on bringing down the masquerade himself
If he genuinely wants to bring down the Masquerade (which isn't necessarily the tone I got from that), then he makes an okay ally in my book. Better the chances of an independent, sovereign Doofania!
Why the MORGANA one?
Because Morgana and the sheep talisman is a one-two combination for Morgana making you go to sleep, and the sheep talisman exploring dreams. :V

I don't have time to read through all the discussion, but it seems at some point consensus shifted form favoring the encantus to favoring the Talisman. What led to that?
A flicker of disgust passes across Xanatos' face. "Yes, sadly the Huntsclan has been plaguing the Magus Bazaar and New York at large for the several years." Xanatos replies. "Their hatred seems inexhaustible. They want nothing more than to wipe out anything nonhuman with a spark of magic, because they're inferior. Or a terrible threat. I don't know, it seems to change every week."

"Can't you just… I dunno, wipe them all our or something?"

"It's not that simple. The Huntsclan are more than a terrorist group. They're an ideology, devoted to wiping out magical creatures whenever they're able. They're organized into multiple cells, several of which have no purpose other than to build more. It's an unfortunate truth that people tend to fear what they don't understand, and it's very doubtful that mentality can be changed overnight."
Oh great, anti-magical KKK.

Right. Guess we need to plan for what to do when the masquerade falls.

Well, people have described how a side-effect of our plans to make Doofania a cultural powerhouse will make people more accepting of magic in many ways. I still fully agree to that, and we should keep that diplomatic approach up. If the wizards are always friendly neighbors in our cartoons, people might have a better view of them.

Xanatos is right that that some stuck-up thickheads will hate magic and magicians no matter what. don't know how many will go so far as joining the not-KKK, but there defintely will be some. Now I ask, are we and our future great society of muggles and mages going to cower in the face of a few mad terrorists? NO! Perhaps an armed insurrection of some few die-hard racists is impossible to avert, much in the same way it is unthinkable for the United States to have ended slavery without a civil war. In that case, when the fighting is futile to avert, there is nothing to do but to commit fully: Deploy Genghis Khan and crush the bastards!

Remember, in a twisted way when a bunch of racists are resorting to terrorism against you it means that your policies are working. It means you're changing society in a way that definitely threatens their bigoted way of life.

Intrigue Check: Is anyone eyeing this item?
DC 100/110/140 needed: 34+14+38+10+5+7=108

All sorts of people around the auction are interested in the talisman. Everyone from Xanatos to the bowler hat man look at the talisman with interest, even that one weird redhead in the back row. This is going to be one of the hottest items of the night.
And that's on only the first level of success, yet we can see it's in very high demand. This is gonna be contested alright.

As Magica begins the next lot, Russ leans over, and speaks gently in a voice only Xanatos can hear.

"I know what you're doing."

"Oh?" Xanatos whispers back, quirking a single eyebrow.

"I don't know if you're just being opportunistic, or what, but it doesn't matter. I may agree with you, but I'm not going to let you strongarm the Doctor into this."

Russ glares.
Rus knows something about what Xanatos is up to, that he's either unwilling or unauthorized to share with us. But I can see what the Government wouldn't want Xanatos to have too much influence.

The nice thing about this vote is it is lopsided enough that I don't have to worry about changing it. As such, I'm going to vote my heart.

[X] Plan: Identity theft

I want to commit identity theft on the Devil. Also, sick the Hocus Pocus witches on Janna, because every budding young evil witch needs a group of older nemesis to drain the life out of.

On a completely unrelated note, is Blot likely to break Inquinator out of prison? With respect to our prison guards, their chance of stopping him entirely revolves around whether or not Russ is nearby, but I'm not sure if he's interesting enough for Blot to take interest in.

Similarly, what cards do you think we'll get from this outing? The magic smuggler or Magica de Spell, perhaps? Xanatos and Owen would be great, but unlikely.

You guys do realize that the Encantus teaches mental magic, right? Russ literally doesn't know what he's talking about.

We did really well by getting the Scroll, to my understanding.

Where is that part proven?
The Sorcerer's Apprentice game canon, the original script, a book about the Sorcerer's Apprentice movie.
Don't we need one of those ring-thingies to do magic from the Encantus?
They should have said that we needed a specific kind of focus to use that specific kind of magic, if they weren't something you could make from the Book. It'd refleft badly on them if they didn't on a highly rated item like this.

Why would they? Most people at the auction would know that and they could always just find a way to get a focus. She never said we would be able to use the magic right off the bat.

"Ahhh, now this is a very special item. An Encantus!"

Magicia allows a moment of drama before carrying on. You notice several figures in the audience sitting up straighter.

"Every great sorcerer must start as an apprentice, and any sorcerer's apprentice must have this book!
This would be a great time to mention those incredibly important and related details. As for why the average Occult person wouldn't be able to get a "proper" Focus when we wouldn't?
The Encantus is a model for that ancient line of Merlin's magicians, wizards passing down their knowledge, history, and power through generations with supernaturally instructive ability! Vital to their order, rarely let out of their sight, so few have ever seen the light of day, that…"
Maybe pay more attention to what's being said?

If I didn't have my heart set on gambling for both items, I'd go for [ ] Secure the Book. Reason being, if someone wins this very contested auction for the talisman, their name will be revealed. If someone wins this, it's a reasonable thing to assume that they're a collector, and might have more of them. If we win the talisman, we won't know who else wants it and can afford it. Well, other than the Huntsmen.

Of course she would give a general overview of it. She wants people to buy the Encantus.

Why wouldn't she give a brief overview of it? The fact that you need a focus to use to Encantus is irrelevant.
