Hmm. Instead of destroying the memory device, propose tuning it to something we don't care about - a random rock on the ground, for example - and then holding on to it. Possible future use cases: Tune it to Kyubey and give it to Madoka. Give it to Hijiri to cut her back off from telepathy so she can't keep Yuuri informed on our position. Holding on to it safely should be trivial, just stick it in a random grief sphere like we do with all of our other goodies.

[] Hold on to the memory device - it might be useful later if re-tuned.

Did we ever get around to telling someone that we're not sure Hijiri is on the level, or was that yet another thing that got lost? If not, do we think that we can safely commit to telling Sayaka+Mami that next vote, or do we need to do it now so we get two chances to make it happen?
And finally, the big one - I think jumping to "mind control" based on discrepancies will make us out to be incredibly naive, instead of just assuming malice. That makes us lose credibility, which will make it harder to push for our preferred (peaceful) resolution.
Good point, thank you. It's gone.

[] Simultaneously: Telepathy Sayaka and discuss her morning plans. Fly a clone home? Commit to revealing magic to parents?

--[] Affirm Hijiri's agency and support her.
--[] Make her feel safe enough to let go of the memory device.
--[] Keep the Pleiades from feeling you're being too soft.
--[] Convince Hijiri to connect you to Yuuri.

I think it got semi-lost. We poked Sayaka about antimagic, but my previous votes "point out descrepancies, ignorance or malice" was kind of elided over.

Some more evidence to the Pleiades that we aren't just taking her at her word can only be helpful, I think.

Right, I'm going to start with Veb's but I think it needs some short but significant changes.

202 words.

Additions:
1: Hijiri has snapped at us for taking her side. I'd say this implies that being too supportive is as possible to lead to a failure state as Hijiri feeling attacked. And it's the mistake Sabrina is more likely to make.

2: Added hinting at Hijiri not being alone.

We've talked about this. Well, argued vehemently. It's been said before, it needs to be said again: I think this is necessary.

On top of the reasons from two votes ago, right now, Hijiri very obviously feels alone in the world. She envies Niko having the Saints. This will give her something to latch onto.

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if Hijiri's current situation is that she was lonely before and Anri ended up as someone for her to latch onto. It's well known that one of the big parts of both cults and radicalizing people is taking someone who's extremely lonely or otherwise isolated and giving them a place or cause to call theirs. And thereafter they end up with the zeal of converts.

*Considers thought for a moment*

...

*Bolds for importance*

Even if she's inclined to try something, her catching the hint might make her reconsider her position.

Removed:

"And support her" from "Affirm Hijiri's agency and support her." (Reason: Space, too likely to make her think she's being coddled. Her feeling safe enough to let go of the memory device ties into the same goal.)

"No human experimentation for example" (Reason: Space, It just seems like making a strawman out of the Saints for little benefit. Certainly, it is a concern concern for Hijiri but if it comes up in conversation it can be dealt with then and there. It's not the most important thing to point out, and her thinking we are, or care about, someone who's wishborn should accomplish the same goal)

Cut down:
"Hijiri is acting out because she's desperate for control. Drawing attention to her choices' negative outcomes will support her while placating the Pleiades."
Reason: (Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace, Most of this is reasoning rather than the actual point.)

Iffy about: "Propose bringing Hijiri along. You think it'll help you deal with Yuuri." (Reason: Taking Oriko with us after the better part of two weeks is one thing. This strikes like it could be taken by the Saints as actually taking Hijiri to the battlefield.)

Reordered:
Questions on Anri: (Reason: I think it's better going from questions Hijiri is most likely to answer to least likely to answer.)

Cut down:
"Hijiri is acting out because she's desperate for control. Drawing attention to her choices' negative outcomes will support her while placating the Pleiades."
Reason: (Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace, Most of this is reasoning rather than the actual point.)
With Firn being too short on time to keep up with the shit that this thread spews sometimes, we need to start adding explicit reasoning to our votes.
Iffy about: "Propose bringing Hijiri along. You think it'll help you deal with Yuuri." (Reason: Taking Oriko with us after the better part of two weeks is one thing. This strikes like it could be taken by the Saints as actually taking Hijiri to the battlefield.)
Hm. Actually, now that you bring it up. Now that we're explicitly telling the Pleiades that we don't totally trust Hijiri and that we're going to go digging, we can totally drop this justification. Similarly, the original reasoning about flying under the Pleiades' radar with the therapy no longer holds, so we can take that out and focus on Hijiri. Which...
1: Hijiri has snapped at us for taking her side. I'd say this implies that being too supportive is as possible to lead to a failure state as Hijiri feeling attacked. And it's the mistake Sabrina is more likely to make.
It wasn't about the support, it was that Brinapilot's intervention made Hijiri feel like we were taking control away from her again - "I don't need you to defend me" is "I can do this myself" or "I need to do this myself".

However, you're right that there's a failure mode here and that I should explicitly address it. So...

I just thought of something more important than this vote.

More important than Yuuri.

More important than Hijiri.

[] Make Mami a gold, flower shaped hairpin, like the ones she uses... But in gold!

Seriously, this must happen. In the near future.

I am still going to include at least hinting at the wishborn thing since I think it's important and I haven't seen an argument to convince me against it.

You're not really sure if she's agreeing or just humouring you, but well, it's Oriko. She thinks in lines about as straight as she herself is.

That was a horrible pun. I approve.

Why didn't you hit Oriko with Kirikobomb?
"She's your life, duh. Now kiss her, you fool!"
... Alright, that's playing fast and loose with an existential crisis, but it's not like things could get worse, right? No, don't answer that question.

"... And... Asunaro. I don't recommend going there, though." She shudders slightly.

A sound advice if I ever heard one.
But, considering the newest chapters take place in Asunaro...

Catherine had a bad habit of slipping into her wish given powers of "understanding people"

We need her on our team, ASAP! What's it gonna take? Flying over to Europe and murdering a couple dozens of magical girls? Easy!
No price is too high for a professional therapist. Or any therapist in this case; beggars can't be choosers.

Homura is... Homu-ing. She's mildly annoyed, you think, which is frankly to be expected.

"I'm disappointed in you, young lady! Public displays of affection are unacceptable. No more new guns for you this month!"
"But Moooooom!"

"W-what's wrong?" Madoka asks, seeming to sag in on herself. "I- I won't. I won't make a contract, b-but what's wrong?"

Too many things to count. How does Homucifer sound to you, Madoka?

A hypothetical mental Sayaka

Ugolino is real! Or was.
Rip, UgoMura. They shall make jokes about you long after the sun blinks out.

Your fault, isn't it?

I admit, being a magical girl isn't the best thing in the world. Or the safest. Or the sanest. Or-...
Point is, this isn't the end. Sayaka even survived her own quest and only died in it three times ( and witched out one ). That should count for something.

Madoka, it... contracting is never the way out.
Unless you're dying. And even then you'd better think some. Not too much, dying sucks, though being meguca can potentially suck even more.

"Oh, Sayaka!" Madoka says, looking at her friend. "Have you started on the math homework yet?"

Madoka is probably smarter than me.
Mami is definitely smarter than me.
14-15 year old Japanese middle school students briefly study non-Euclidean surfaces on their math lessons.
Well. Nothing to be done.
The fact remains that they largely believe(d) in magical girl bullshit before PMMM, but whatever.

... You really do want to know what a mindreader would make of you, though.

I think she'd go insane. Instantaneously. Sabrina, your head is not a safe place. Reconcile yourself with this fact and move on. Help people. Do SCIENCE!. Make giant mechas out of despair and magic.

"Yeah, later," Sayaka says, tossing you a lazy wave as she tries to help Hitomi up. The verdette gives her an irritated look, pushing herself to her feet and dusting her skirt off with an upraised nose. Sayaka sighs, shaking her head.

They need to talk it out. Will they have talked it out? Let's see.

"If this one ends up like the last one, darling, we're going to have words," Hiroko notes with a smile.

Wait, how did the last one end up like?
Oh.
Oooooh.

That's putting it too harshly lightly

Ftfy.

Hey, I wouldn't agree for a gold bar, either. Especially if I knew where it came from.
But that's just me.
Surely Yakuza wouldn't be able to track Sabrina. Unless the money's marked. I don't know how that'd work, though.
So she's probably safe?
Aah. Remembered myself crashing Sierra Madre Vault, hauling as much gold as I could and then some. Good times.

"Doesn't look like you managed to scare her straight," you say, jabbing a thumb at the black haired girl.

Again with that pun. Really, Sabrina.

... heh. Rings. One Ring to rule them all, One ring to find them...

Ash nazgh thrakatuluk
Agh burzum-ishi krimpatul!

Only, you know, we'd need to write everything in Deutsch. With runes.

Ein Ring, sie zu knechten,
Sie alle zu finden,
Ins Dunkel zu treiben
Und ewig zu binden!

( wiki-stolen, I admit freely. I don't speak German. At least, not well and not without a dictionary. Black speech, on the other hand... still nope. But I do remember the inscription. )

... How many conversations can Sabrina simultaneously, anyway?

"Yeah... I tried to make a book containing information I don't know," you say. "I uh. Well, I got a book full of concrete batching specifications."

How? I'm not trying to nitpick, I'm genuinely curious.

Btw, there is a Sayaka-Kyousuke-Hitomi love triangle. ( can you call a triangle something where one vertex doesn't even know there is a geometric figure? )
Combined with Sayaka's being convinced she needs to repay Hitomi...
It has a potential to blow up.
Two words. Grief spiral.

Huh. So they did talk.

It... it can isolate you," you say, choosing your words slowly. "From friends, from family, and powers are fun, but... they don't make up for it, you know?

Laying it too thick. You have an amnesia or maybe even didn't exist before becoming a magical girl. You ( allegedly ) don't even know these things firsthand. I mean, you do know, because you watched the anime, but... whatever.

"Magical girls help people. So because I'm a magical girl, I help people now," she says. "I can help people now." She clenches one fist. "I fight evil, or wrongdoing, or whatever. And I can pay it back that way. So... yeah." She grins at you, frown chased away by bright, sunny cheer. "Thanks! Good to be on the team."

She's not entirely wrong to think like that. I mean, if we weren't around, then Sayaka'd probably bite the dust real soon like she always does, but a magical girl can be a force for good. Well, there's a little caveat that after some time they almost inevitably become the things they fight, like Jedi, Inquisitors, Beowulf.
Is Sayaka going to resent us for this? Not telling her, I mean.
I wonder.

Oriko and Kirika make an adorable couple.

That is the truth most holy and righteous. Praise be unto this ship, and let it shine brightly and sail to the sea!

Kyousuke is kinda egocentric, I guess? When I watched, he had seemed fine to me, or, to be truthful, I wasn't paying much attention to him at all. Well, he is a teenager, male one at that. Still strange. Doesn't he think about the girls? I distinctly remember having trouble thinking about anything else but the girls. Puberty is a thing. Oh, and now I remembered his crush on Homura. Nevermind. Maybe he just likes bishies more.

Also, I think QB intentionally avoids contracting anyone in the vicinity of Sabrina. For many possible reasons. He contracted Sayaka only because she is a stepping stone on his way to Madokami. Stupid bastard.

Collecting Soul Gems because they're pretty.

Hannibal Lecter would be impressed. Kindasortamaybeprobablynot.

"Sooooo how many Christmas baskets do I owe you?" you ask cautiously, rolling the river stone around your palm.
Hmm, let's see.
"All the Christmas baskets," Masami grunts.
Sounds about right.

Alienating the little, well, alien, could lead to it taking more active measures against you.

It's an either/or situation, I think. On one hand, you could've squeezed some useful information out of it. On the other, Mami has enough abandonment issues as it is, without QB to draw them out. Do I have to tell that you made the right call? Not that my opinion matters in this instance. It was a year and a half ago.

Not the Black Speech.

"Pouts".

"The Mortal Coil" finished! Five (?) chapters left.

I seriously think letting Hijiri know that she's not alone in being an artificial human creared by a wish can only have good results whether or not she's telling the truth

Firnagzen stated in WoG that Sabrina "wouldn't lose in a multitasking contest against Skitter", and Sabrina's multitasking is directly applicable to simultaneous conversations.

So, at least ten quintillion. Written out, 1,000,000,000,000,000,000.

Sayaka: Sabrina can't multitask that well, she gets to item 3 or 4 on the to-do list which involves Mami and the que just stops.

That's AiYo for you. The power of Mami Rabu is some of the most powerful in the universe.

I really like how organically it happened though. No weird Love At First Sight stuff, just Sabrina and Mami slowly growing closer and eventually developing fellings for one another.

Firn, do you have any ideas for what kind of scene you'll write when Sabrina inevitably confesses to Mami or vice versa?
