On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Neat as Left is, it doesn't seem to be the right answer to the trial, and I don't think it's quite strong enough to let anyone be near Snorri when he goes full deathstormtornado-mode.

[X] [Stone:] Left
[Improves general toughness. Wearer's willpower and durability is added to nearby allies]

I like left the most, because a proper dawi should be an example to others and aid those around them. We are already ridiculously tough, so a rune that makes those around us also ridiculously tough certainly has a lot of benefits.

[ ] [Stone:] Center
[Improves general toughness. Wearer's mental resilliance cannot be negatively affected by any outside sources]

This doesn't really play well with the rune of detecting outside negative influences, because it makes it redundant, so I'd say this one is out.

[ ] [Stone:] Right
[Improves general toughness. Wearer's endurance and durability increase proportionately to their willpower]

This is more about improving individual dawi by making the best dawi even better.

So this is more about, does this rune represent dawi as individuals, or dawi as a race? If the former, then the right rune, and if the latter than the left rune. Overall though, I just like the Left one more.

A runelord is a king in the way Okri the brewer is a miner i.e. if everyone else who could do the job is dead or elsewhere.
This not that simple. Runelords have the blood of Thungi, the blood of Grugni and Valaya the ancestor gods. A royal clan of the Dawi is one that can trace lineage back to Grungi or Grimnir. There are many clans that are descended from them and all have claim to blood but not the Royal blood. To be chosen by the Elders for your clan to be king is to place the paramountcy of the Ancestor's who founded your clan, you are a king of Grungi's/Grimnir's blood. Runelords have to share blood with Thungi to wield runes, so they by definition are in contention for becoming a Royal clan. (IE during the founding of Kraka Drakk we were in contention to be chosen as king.) To a dawi is to strive to live up to the ancestors, but be judged by them on worthiness. I don't think it is common by any means for a Runelord to be chosen or for a Royal clan to teach children runesmithing even if they have the gift. To them it is better to specialize so the clan of Kings is the clan of Kings. A clan of runesmiths is a clan of runesmiths, they aren't mutually exclusive but to balance both duties is hard. A good example is the Slayer Kings of Warhammer, the duties of slayers is to die and fufill the oath. A king's oath is to survive and lead their people, dual duties that fight each .other for supremacy.

A very good chapter, I think some people are misinterpreting the flashback/possible future in a small way. Thungi created this trail to prove them worthy of the seat of the lost, of his heir. In that way they are his apprentice, apprentices fail. I don't think the flashback was punishment or you failed kind of way. More in a teacher kind of way, failure is a part of life you have to learn from it and be strengthened. A reminder of this is what you should have done and this is what you have done, how do we fix it? Snorri is already well on his way, he just needs to break down that final wall with Karstah, a acknowledgment of failure on the teachers part. Something anyone in a position of Authority is loathe to do is to admit that they were wrong, but it is something any authority figure has to learn to do.

Got to say I find it rather adorable that the rune brings out the fears of the person and the first fear that shows up is Snorri being a shit dad with a schism of the whole runesmithing guild only showing up after he by his own will goes back to the rune.

Center would still lead to Dawi loss since as much willful as they are they are also a fragile people to loss and mental trauma, often reacting in self destructing ways.
Left would be neat but I think right is the best, one thing you can say about all Dawis be they good or bad is that they have a strong will.

[X] [Stone:] Right

[ ] [Warding:] Left.
[Blows against the wearer cause the struck area to become increasingly resistant against that type of damage]

[ ] [Warding:] Center.
[The wearer grows increasingly resistant until all but impervious to the first kind of attack they suffer for the duration of the battle]

[ ] [Warding:] Right.
[The wearer has greatly increased resistance to magical and physical damage as long as they are in contact with stone]
[ ] [Courage:] Left
[The wearer has increased bravery. They become generally aware of spells and items being used to negatively impact their mental state.]

[ ] [Courage:] Center
[The wearer's physical abilities rise in proportion to the level of natural and artificial fear they feel/are subjected to, up to double their natural peak]

[ ] [Courage:] Right
[The wearer has increased bravery. Casting the Rune renders the caster and nearby allies fearless for ten minutes but they are subjected to the fear they would have otherwise felt after the fact]
[ ] [Stone:] Left
[Improves general toughness. Wearer's willpower and durability is added to nearby allies]

[ ] [Stone:] Center
[Improves general toughness. Wearer's mental resilliance cannot be negatively affected by any outside sources]

[ ] [Stone:] Right
[Improves general toughness. Wearer's endurance and durability increase proportionately to their willpower]

It would seem there are three possible combos:
Left > Left > Right as we are currently doing,
Right > Right > Left (Indomitable Leader, Ancestor Style), or
Center > Center > Center (alternate interpretation of Toughness)?

Though I'm not sure how the Center option in the first set of choices is supposed to fit in a Combo all things considered.

Left vs Right is I think, at its core, a question about community vs the individual.

Left is community. As long as hearth and hold stand firm, the Dawi will never break. It is the duty of the longbeards to guard the beardlings until the beardlings are capable of standing on their own two feet.

Right is the individual. Dawi are stubborn, spiteful creatures and will hold on to their last breath to defend what they love and cherish. And so long as a single Dawi yet stands in defiance, the hold and hearth will perservere.

The update is pretty explicit that He wasn't.
Just because the rune is forcing Snorri to confront his own doubts doesn't mean Thungni can't give it a nudge to remind an old grumbler to be kinder to his adopted daughter.

Ancestors work in mysterious ways, beardling.

A Dwarf exists within a Clan, a Guild, a Karak.

Even those assimilated in Human society in canon timeline at least try to retain these structures.

Loved the Thugnison hallucination bit. I think it's a good insight into what the more charitable critics of Snorri are probably thinking. Hard hitting, but gets the point across well.
