You can manipulate the stone by having it grab the gilding and move without moving the gilding itself with ES @Velorien does that sound plausible to Hazou?
1) Reo wouldn't be leveling ES to 40 right away. I don't think it's realistic to ask him to do so. So we're looking at 3-6 months for him to level it to where he can increase density.
Edit: assuming he already has a lvl 40 Earth jutsu and an xp/day rate of 2.5 it would take him (410/2.5) = 164 days to level ES to 40, that's 5.5 months. If he doesn't have an Earth jutsu at 40 it's a lot longer. If you think I'm doing our boy dirty with a 2.5 xp rate it's still going to take like 4 months at 3.5 xp/day.
2) Right now ES is depending on security by obscurity, anything which makes it less obscure is bad. That includes other people deciding to learn it.
3) Hazou himself thinks that it's the pathway to 3D Sealing. Since we can't ask Reo to unlearn it. It makes sense not to rock the boat before we get it to 50 in a in-game month or so. Since it's going to take Reo months to get it to a level where he can help Hazou we don't lose much.
4) Reo will notice that the jutsu yearns to do more. That's unlike any other jutsu we're aware of. That's what I'm trying to prevent.

Not Jiraiya's Awesome Daybright Lantern thingamajigs? iirc the point of HOWSes was to be using high amounts of chakra being constantly fed into it - we don't have that

Disclaimer: My migraine is still lovingly beating my brain into swiss cheese with a rolling pin. I apologize if I come across as curt, that is not my intention.
1) It's going to take a mountain of time for the architect to come up with a final design, and then it'll take another mountain of time to hire construction crews, and then it'll take a mountain of time for Hazou and Mari to negotiate with the Merchant's Council for everything we want ninjas to do (MEWs, the Jiraiya Colossus, ES gold filigree). I could see it being a couple months before we need Reo to know ES.
2) That's sorta already out of the bag. Hazou made the GS Replica with GS, regularly plays with it as a form of stress relief and training, and has sold Earthshaped Statues for profit before. Hazou-the-character is a clan head and a famous genius... with him doing all this publicly, it wouldn't surprise me if learning Earthshaping was fashionable right now.
3) Reo isn't a sealmaster and has no desire to become one. His dream was to learn THing, and he's studying to get the Stunt right now. I don't think he'll ever want to learn Sealing. He's shown no narrative interest in it before, even though he has the means (all he'd have to do is ask Hazou to read Jiraiya's notes)
4) Reo is a genin/chunnin who's missing a leg. He can't exactly afford to level a noncombat skill that high. The fact that he survived the Rockwar is shocking in and of itself. I also doubt that he'd raise it as high as Hazou has, without the desire for 3D Sealing.
steampunk sealtech lampposts. I think the GS's ambient chakra just allows HOWs to last longer while slowing down the GS degradation (only ~70% confident in that, though, because migraine).
HOWs aren't as bright as the Daybright Seals, but they last a lot longer. We're not trying to light up the entire estate like if the Fourth of July just had a triad marriage with New Year's and an American Back to School Day. We're just trying to increase nighttime visibility for general safety, flexing on all the other clans, and make it harder for sneaky ninja to sneak into the estate at night.
We can always have one of the other Goketsu Sealmasters whip up a brighter version of HOWs later on.

I can't recall the details from the Quest, but according to the Player Known Seals google doc, HOWs are described as lasting "weeks," which will vastly decrease the amount of manpower required to keep the estate supplied with

I didn't mean we should make it brighter, I meant it more as a "wait would that even work without lots of energy being pumped in?" though if it does work, no complaints.
I'm all in for covering our überstrong walls with wood. Maybe even on both sides, so that (1) people coming in don't automatically expose us as liars and (2) if something does crack/break the wall, there's wood to cushion the shards of granite suddenly liberated from the weird unusual internal pressures it was subjected to, that way no one loses an eye they didn't have to lose in case of earthquake or something

I just want to make it clear that we are talking 6 months. That's how long it will take a 2.5 xp per day ninja to accumulate enough XP to buy level 40 ES at half cost. Reo might be a 2 XP/day ninja too.
Although in fairness he could be a 3 XP per day ninja.
He's going to raising it to 40. When 3D Sealing becomes possible at 50. That's pretty close.

After much discussion on Discord, we've agreed to have Jiraiya's statue be "anatomically accurate" but to garb the Colossus in Arachnid Silks (which should be fire-resistant), rather than "highly flammable garments" in order to prevent unintended flashing. If we want to prank Ritsuo, we'll need to swap the (flame resistant) Arachnid Silks out for normal silks (which are highly flammable)
The Goketsu are an estate with nearly a thousand civilians and are also known as the "explosives" clan. Accidents could happen.
Why use HOWS instead of the dedicated lantern seal (JADLs)? It's much brighter.
It's a huge leap from "include out-inspired architecture ideas" to "make our reputation worse".

The Daybright Seals? Because they don't last as long as HOWs. HOWs last for literal weeks, which will decrease the amount of workload that this feature adds to the Goketsu sealmasters/sealsmiths. We're going to have a lot of lampposts anyway, so the (relative) dimness of the lights shouldn't be a problem, especially since the Goketsu Estate will be the only estate that has them.
We can always have one of our junior sealmasters research a brighter variation HOWs, to keep the longevity while increasing the brightness. IIRC, the Daybright Seals are a relatively easy seal to modify (you gain a mountain of veterancy if you go through Jiraiya's instructional Daybright Chain, first).
Heck, I recall reading a research paper that said natural blue lighting positively influences your mood. We could even hack colored versions of these lights (and Mari can have her mood lighting).

I think HOWS are about as bright as a dim flashlight without GS chakra making them glow extra.

HOWs are 300 lumens, as per the Google doc. That's 300 candles. In a world without light pollution, it should be more than enough, especially with the number of lampposts we're going to add.
Worst case scenario, we instruct one of the junior sealmasters to begin researching a brighter HOWs concurrent with the estate's construction.
This is just wrong. A quick Google search tells me candles are about 12.5 lumens. So change that to 24 candles.
A streetlight is about 5000 lumens, so HOWS are about 6% as bright. To get a brightness comparable to modern streets at night we'd need 17x as many streetlights. Except there's much less background light, so it's probably closer to 34x.

- Have decoration be generally conservative, and layout similar to the Uchiha Compound (Utilitarian, not rocking the boat.)
- Have designers collaborate with...
- Kagome (Defense).
- Noburi (Clinic location and design, sanitation).
- Mari (general I&S defenses, aesthetic opinions)
- Kei (sanity checks/optimization, logistics concerns)
- Construction:
- Use high quality traditional materials
- Prefer Goketsu craftsman, then KEI construction crews, then general Leaf crews.
- Monitor for corruption.

- Memorial for the clan's fallen ninja. Include space for future statues of the dead.
- With help from sketches and those who knew him, Hazo Earthshapes accurate Larger-Than-Life Jiraiya statue. (Spend full day when time is available, even some FP if needed to get right. As grand as is feasible.)

Wildly dangerous to do in the middle of leaf, unfortunately. Just jog ten minutes out into the fields.
Mass sealtech adoption raises risk of mass sealing failures- until we take steps to mitigate this it's reckless to have them laying out in the middle of Leaf where any terrorist could compromise them.

HOWs are an easy variant of the Daybright Seal. HOWs are easy to make, and run very little risk of sealing failures. Furthermore, HOWs benefit from the veterancy provided by Jiraiya's Instruction Chain, meaning that the "very little risk" is reduced even further.

I am not concerned with failures at point-of-infusion. I'm more concerned about when an enemy agent takes one out of the dozens of publicly accessible lampposts and intentionally damages it, or when whoever scribed it has an unrelated sealing failure, and everything they have ever infused cascade fails. Or heck, when a housing gets damaged and rain gets in.
Seals are not safe, and we have never put any effort into making them safe. They should not be left out unattended en-masse casually.
