Now I wonder if the Kurosawa clan's personal library somewhat rivals the public Mist one due to the obvious advantages they have in copying books. Or whether that is nullified by having Kurosawa copy books for the Mist library as a decently paying side job.

Mist likely used woodprinting, which a Kurosawa will have to carve out.

I hope you're doing better now.

I was going to add this:

Speaking as one of those people, my memory is that I did bring it up, but it got immediately shot down. I could have argued for it more, but the sense I'd gotten from the response was that it wouldn't have helped. Since that's what you seem to be met with pretty much any time you suggest anything, I'm not surprised by your frustration.

But having gone through my post history looking for the quote, I can't find it and think I must have just imagined it. :/

Well, if it wasn't shot down then it sure needs to be brought up (in the real world, this time).
On my end, this last term of university got really really busy, and I think it kind of slipped my mind (not that I would have had much time to champion it if I remembered). For what it's worth, I'm still generally positive towards the idea and if the topic comes up again at a time when it's actionable I estimate myself supporting it.

Okay kay let's do this! It's Sunday, so I don't expect this plan to be great right now but I expect it'll be better after repeated optimizations!

[X] Action Plan: Hazou's Busy Day Minus One
  • General
    • Check with Jiraiya
    • No binding commitments on first meeting
  • Merchants
    • Meet with prior contacts
      • Bring gifts; 'excess' storage seals, perhaps
      • Ask what they need/want
        • imply possibility of assistance
      • Ask for other people who might appreciate a relationship
      • If receptive, offer sponsorship if approved
    • Make other contacts
  • Ami
    • Arrange for a meeting at her leisure
    • Ostensible subject is Keiko
      • Discuss reason for distancing from Keiko
        • We're pretty sure she can run rings around Keiko, us, and maybe even Jiraiya, so she probably has her reasons
        • We'd like to do what we can to resolve what's keeping the two of them apart
  • Ikeda
    • Arrange another meeting at her leisure, should she be willing
    • Ask about her experience in Sand
      • Use missing-nin experience as excuse - curiosity about what a normal ninja life is like
      • See what she knows about the civilian experience
    • Trade story for story if necessary, but don't give more than she does
      • DO NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT HOT SPRINGS AND MOUNTAIN AND ENTRY TO LEAF
  • ISC
    • Watch Ino and Shikamaru's match
    • Hang out with them afterwards
  • [Other Foreign Nin]
    • Mist
      • Float idea of Till'n'Fills as punishment duty
    • Rock/Lightning
      • General pulse and initial contact
  • Contingencies
    • Armor
      • Insist on the Kotsuzui explanation at all times.
        • Even if Kotsuzui himself asks.

But we arent watching Ino/Shikamaru's matches and hanging out with them afterwards :(

We are now, and with at least 77 words to spare! :V

I worry that this will involve us partying with this same group of people, except that now it will cause a turf war between Ino and FlamingHotChick from Sand.

Ino had spent most of the night drinking fruit juice and trying to get Hazō to slow down. Noburi, aware of the plan, had been running interference for him, loudly declaiming Hazō's inalienable right to make poor choices.

"Cool! We should get together tomorrow sometime, grab a drink!"

Poor Ino :drevil:

...I'm still not sure exactly how the Kurosawa keep their bloodline's use in sealing a secret when it's blatantly obvious to anyone who has an idea of how it works.

"Amazing Kinesthetic Sense" is pretty indistinguishable from "Perfect Muscle Memory" unless you do a really suspicious (for a ninja) movement. Repetitively.

I mean, Keiko or Tenten (?) can bullseye butterflies at 40 meters or something right? Thats an absolutely frightening level of precision for someone that doesn't necessarily have a bloodline that gives them heightened physical abilities.

Is it time for bad decisions? Yes it is.

[] Proto Plan: The A(m)I Box Experiment
  • Schedule an appointment to speak to Ami.
    • Consult with Jiraiya beforehand so as to minimise the possibility of Bad Things.
    • Do not attempt any manipulations. They will not work.
    • Assume that Ami is fully capable of manipulating you any way she wants. Do not make any agreements with her, and if prompted to do so, respond that you will consider matters and return with an answer before you leave Mist. DO NOT buckle under pressure here. DO NOT be swayed to give a more minor agreement as a concession. NO EXCEPTIONS.
    • Nothing Ami says is evidence that should be immediately updated upon. Merely filed away for later examination. There is no way for you to distinguish between Ami saying something and believing it and Ami saying something to manipulate you. Treat her as a potentially-hostile clone of Mari with Kei's intellect.
    • Constantly remind yourself that the woman in front of you plays at the same level as (or even higher than) Jiraiya.
  • The agenda for the meeting:
    • We both know that Kei loves her more than anything else in the world, and Ami is fully capable of controlling her reactions beyond Kei's ability to see through. Therefore Ami wanted to distance herself from Kei, either upon hearing that Kei had not intended to return to Mist, or since before then.
    • If the former, it is possible that this was a spur of the moment reaction that she now regrets, and if the latter, it is possible that this decision was made for Kei's benefit because associating with Ami would be somehow deleterious to her. In either case, it is possible that Ami would prefer to mend bridges with Kei if some obstacle were overcome.
    • If such an obstacle were to exist, is there anything Ami suspects that Hazou may be in a position to do to help her remove it?
      • If it does not exist, and Ami simply no longer wishes to be a sister to Kei, then she may feel free to request some other activity that serves her purposes. Whatever the case, this request will of course be scrutinised by Jiraiya, and may yet be denied, but there is no guarantee that he will be able to catch self-serving requests, and thus making one has some positive utility for self-serving!Ami. The fact that self-serving!Ami would still make a request allows sisterly!Ami to make a request without exposing herself to those who she wishes to disguise herself as self-serving!Ami to. In this manner, either hypothetical version of Ami, sisterly or self-serving, should still seek to make a request, so as to best optimise for their respective preferred outcomes.
    • Is there anything else that Ami would like to discuss?

[] Plan Segment: Meeting Ami, Compressed:
  • Meet with Ami
    • Ask Jiraiya to help plan.
    • Assume Ami can manipulate you. Don't commit to anything, if she asks then say you'll have an answer before you leave Mist. NO EXCEPTIONS.
    • Don't automatically believe anything she says. Treat her words like they came from a hostile Mari with Keiko's intellect.
  • Agenda:
    • Ami became distant from Keiko, but is also likely capable of deceiving Keiko about it. If Ami grew distant when she heard Keiko would not be returning to Mist, two possible cases (among others) are that she did it to protect Keiko, or that she now regrets her decision. If possible, we want to help mend bridges.
    • If Ami is protecting Keiko, is there anything Hazou can do to help change the situation?
    • Ami can ask us for something anyways, even if she doesn't want anything to change, but anything she asks will be scrutinized by our clan head and might get denied.
    • Anything else you want to discuss?

Word count: 453 --> 161

@MadScientist does this more concise version of your plan still work as you intend?

Need to ask Kei. @MadScientist

Come to think of it... why don't we take Noburi along to the Ami meeting? IC he has as much reason to want to talk to her as Hazou, and he should work as a sanity check as well - so if he says that Keiko will murder us, we abort.

One reason not to do it is that we have no control over him, and we can't stop him from doing stupid things through meticulous planning.

Hashirama's gigantic wood, it's actually happening. How long have I spent waiting for this moment?

I promised it, and I do take my promises seriously. I will repeat, however, that comments like this do not help.

Ami
  • Arrange for a meeting at her leisure
  • Ostensible subject is Keiko
    • Discuss reason for distancing from Keiko
      • We're pretty sure she can run rings around Keiko, us, and maybe even Jiraiya, so she probably has her reasons
      • We'd like to do what we can to resolve what's keeping the two of them apart
I'm a bit worried about how this is being phrased, because Keiko's explanation for why she and Ami are estranged seemed pretty clear:
She continued staring into the distance over the tops of her knees, seeing nothing. "She was so excited that I had maneuvered my way back so I could rejoin the clan."

Her head dropped to her chest, her face hidden behind her limbs now. "I could not make myself tell her the truth. But she realized it. I hesitated, showed insufficient enthusiasm. She did not speak to me like a sister again, after that."
It feels like the goal of the conversation (resolve Ami/Keiko being seperated) is well-known to Hazou (Keiko won't go back to Mist), and if the two have this conversation Hazou will expect to hear Ami talk about how Keiko should be brought back to Mist/the Mori clan. I recognize that this isn't Ami's actual reason for estranging Keiko (which is that Keiko isn't ready to deal with Mori politics), but one thing we could do is to talk about how much Keiko's grown, both in terms of her ninja skills and in terms of her social competence. It would let us signal to Ami that she may be underestimating Keiko (possibly pushing them closer together), but since Hazou isn't all that close to Ami (they've never met, they're functionally strangers) it may also signal that Hazou isn't as loyal to Keiko as he should be (why talk about your teammate to a foreign national?).

Just my rambling thoughts.

On the other hand, we can't stop us from doing stupid things through meticulous planning, either.

A highly enjoyable update, @eaglejarl.

People were mentioning that writing plans for Marked for Death is stressful, but I find it exciting. Yes, it's easy to make a mistake, either in the process of planmaking or when conveying your intent in plans, and the stakes are high, but that makes the times when you're successful all the more pleasant. Like this time, for example: if setting up a double-deception reverse-seduction was easy, it wouldn't have been nearly as fun for me (even as I still remain concerned about potential non-obvious oversights).

Also, I note that Hazou played his part perfectly. It seems we could use him for complicated social missions, provided that we plan everything out sufficiently well.

Regarding Ami, I'll only add that she has ontological inertia. Even if Hazou doesn't interact with her now, she will remain out there, pursuing her unknown goals.

Let's grant that she is so terrifying that even a short casual conversation with her requires ASI-level precautions. If we decide not to talk with her now, we will remain ignorant of that fact, as well as of her goals. Several years later, we'll bump into her at some meeting, and she'll socially eviscerate Hazou into telling her all his secrets, just like she would now — except then we'll have even more secrets to lose. If she does this now, at least we'll know that we must drop a WMD on her ASAP.

More plausibly, she isn't any more dangerous to talk to than the Oyabun, or Pantsaa, or than Jiraiya was back when we were missing-nin. We'll talk to her, learn something about her goals (or at least about what she wants us to think her goals are), get Jiraiya some non-useless intel. We will forbid all worst OPSEC breaches by direct commands, instruct Hazou to remain careful, and if she manages to manipulate him anyway, we'll set him straight the next update like we did with Hana.

Yes, it's still risky, but it's less risky than it will be at any future point.

I think some of you are a little too worried about Ami. Yes, she's disturbingly competent, but to the best of our knowledge so far what she wants is compatible with what we want. We should get into bed with her as soon as possible.

...err, so to speak. Or literally, whatever.

Some modifications to @huhYeahGoodPoint plan
[X] Action Plan: Hazou's Busy Day Plus One
  • General
    • Check with Jiraiya
    • No binding commitments on first meeting
  • Merchants
    • Meet with prior contacts
      • specifically: the salt/spice merchant, glass blower and brewer from before.
      • Bring gifts: 'excess' storage seals, perhaps
    • Make other contacts
      • Start compiling a notebook of potential ones.
  • Ami
    • Arrange for a meeting. Suggest meeting at the library
    • MAKE SURE NOT TO MENTION ANYTHING THAT COULD VIOLATE OPSEC
      • If Hazō thinks any manipulation is going on he will politely leave ASAP
    • Ostensible subject is how Hazō is interested in her politics and philosophy as a rising ninja
      • Feel her out about uplift
      • mention that the "special envoy to Leaf" position has been vacated recently
      • Ask for any book recommendations she has
    • Give a brief explanation of uplift philosophy
      • Casually mention Till-n-fills as a new mission category Leaf's been trying out.
        • Easy money for the economy, good practice for the greener Genin, and it makes the civilians more productive.
      • Maybe float it by your higher-ups for brownie points, perhaps Sand could adopt something similar, who knows?
  • ISC
    • Watch Ino and Shikamaru's match
      • Celebrate as appropriate afterwards should they win.
        • Don't stay out too late though. Tomorrow is showtime.
  • Contingencies
    • Armor
      • Insist on the Kotsuzui explanation at all times.
        • Even if Kotsuzui himself asks.
      • As far as Hazou is concerned "Breaking OPSEC with cute Sand Genin." is now officially on the list of "Hazou's fuck ups."
        • Do not talk about it. It didn't happen.
