Historically speaking, libraries have been the cause of rising literacy rates throughout the world. If you build it, they will learn to read.

Additionally, literacy and education is incredibly important for class consciousness, which is important because it allows for people to better engage in politics and driving their own destinies, which means they can be born a pig farmer and decide to become anything else instead of being trapped on some lords fief for their entire lives.

@Boney , if I may, I want to ask a couple questions:

If the We option wins, we will effectively have a We hive under our employ. As such, we will be able to teach them. It means that, if for some reason, we want to teach them to work alongside us in missions, and use a bunch of them as a kill team, we could, right?

The We as librarians is Peak Zhuf logic. Sentient hivemind spiders would make exceptional librarians, therefore they must get the job.
But there are other factors in play:

Think of the scene with Francesco Caravello visiting Mathilde, or when Mathilde got Belegar the Dragon Obelisk.

She has a massive blindspot when it comes to "what ordinary people will be fine with"
This is a solveable problem, and Boney has already okay'd such a solution:
The talk of having a We hive as librarian is giving me crazy ideas.
Do we know if the Doppelganger spell works on the We or does it take a more complex Illusion spell ?
Because having normal seeming librarians that are actually spiders under illusions sounds like the biggest Grey Wizard prank of all time.
We could even make it a Windhearding project to combine it with The Talking Beast Amber spell.
This seems like it should be viable.
Setting aside that The We are just as much a person as anyone else and that deciding against hiring them because they look wrong is kind of yikes in the first place.

Scribes for doing work outside of the library can be hired aside from The We. Signing on The We does not prohibit us from hiring anyone else, they're just so overwhelmingly competent within the library in the long term that for anything that gets done in the library itself we won't want to. That's been Boney's statements on the matter.

So to venture a "have our cake and eat it too" argument: We can hire The We on as head librarian and train scribes from the K8P community for away work, and the latter job will remain long-term.

The We's consciousness is focused wherever their Egglayers are, and any We that leave there revert to instincts and a few simple instructions. Unless the entire We is going into battle alongside you, that's not viable.

Right. I thought that if a group of them split, they would retain a lower form of conciousness

Thanks for the explanation.

Potentially, depending on the person, yes.
Well, maybe not mining, but most of that is probably being done by dwarves.
Being a librarian will require very specific skills, and lot of work, even if large parts of it is mental.

I'd point to my 2-year masters degree in library science I have as an example of library work being skilled work, but someone will probably say "this is a pre-modern setting, your fancy learning is worthless".

Just imagine Hatalath's reaction if Mathilde walks into the next Project meeting with an Ulgu Orb of Sorcery under her arm.

"What the hell did that Teclis teach these humans."
"No safety procedures! The only path to power!"

shadow knocks over a bookshelf

"For risks and sideeffects ask your local Magister."

That is not the argument, it is that 'the community value of a library is not that great in a civilization where most of the population is illiterate'
There's no better tool for spreading literacy than a library. While it's not required per-se, [] Locals would be the most optimal choice for spreading literacy and the use of books throughout K8P.
It is said that 20% of the world's librarians are spiders. This is true, but misleading. Almost all libraries have non-arachnoid librarians. The statistic due to the Library at Karak Eight Peaks, which hosts a staff of well over ten thousand spiders.
"Who would like someone to staff your library?" She opened her notebook. "We have humans, dwarves, halflings, spiders, Dr. Cython-"

"Spiders?"

"Spiders it is, then."

"No, that wasn't-"

But she was already pouring him a brimming library of spiders.

The size of books, and next to no IT, is probably itself going to be a major increase in amount of physical labour involved.
Assuming the person is actually dedicated to being a decent librarian, lot of people would find it more taxing than, say, farming.
They might be able to do it longer assuming they actually mange to learn the skills, and are able to remember all the information they need (lack of computerized indexes is going to be a major slowdown).

Wait, how local literacy affected by what type of librarians are there?
What not reading reason would there be if we hire locals?
In order to employ people as librarians we have to train them to read, which is a specialised skill people only learn for a job in this time period. This will also likely lead to them teaching their kids so they can get the same job. The same way a blacksmith will teach their kids.

Non reading reasons would be stuff like going to meet with Alice who works there.

That sounds interesting, would you be willing to elaborate? Could you walk into a medieval library and go to town with a quill? What portion of your skills would be transferable? Which ones would you have to learn from scratch?

…See now I feel bad about pointing out that Boney said something about how we would have to invent the entire field of library science. Not sure how much that was a joke though, so it probably wouldn't be useless. Just beyond what's expected.

There is literally nothing stopping literate people from using the Library as a "community space" with We librarians that isn't also stopping them with "local" librarians, except possibly racism against the We.

well, at the very least we don't have to worry about CF for windherding things now probably, gifting like 2 to every college would be a doozer. Esspecially since were the only source for it.

Still curious on it's uses for enchanting though it may be of more use to perhaps mages who handle multiple winds like perhaps the Eonir if they have Quaysh mages like Ulthuan or the Damsels.

[X] Cython
Just like the character and would be interested to see how he goes about recruiting worthy librarian's. Probably more on the loyalty/ability to defend the library rather then spreading knowledge.

Not to much against the We but if it win's i'll be a bit sad we chose organization as the main library focus considering spooder's have edietic memory i believe and will remember where every book is thus organization main advantage is sort of meh. maybe would of liked to choose something like maybe comfort since it would be a comfy library full of spooders and being MALTHITIDES library.
