Impressive rolls, Elkie is growing very quickly.

[Rolling...]

As for her forays into enchantment, you've decided to allow her the freedom to learn whatever works best for her, and it seems that means that she's further exploring the possibilities in different types of magically-attuned materials. It makes perfect sense for her, both in that it's a very direct and effective application of her intuitive Magesight to enhance her enchanting, and as someone who can reasonably assume that their enchantment projects will be taking place in well-stocked laboratories. Perhaps not the most exotic way for her to develop her abilities, but your own first steps were very often shockingly prosaic, and if there's one thing you've learned from the Dwarves, it's the importance of having a solid foundation beneath your feet.
Good that her enchanting is going well.

"We've got the eggs, we've put them in the basket, but the basket isn't getting where they need to go. Is that a reasonable summary of where we're at?" You see winces, and you see bitten tongues to prevent nit-picking of where your crude metaphor doesn't exactly line up with magical minutiae, but you also see hesitant nods. "I imagine the most direct way to go about this would be through the aid of local forest spirits," you say, turning to Cadaeth.
Mathilde using metaphors to make things easily understandable seems to be a trend.

As such, what could very easily have been something the Eonir did in their half of the province and could have been argued was an entirely Eonir innovation, became something impossible to describe as anything but a partnership between College Wizards and Eonir Mages, as Jade Wizards walk Mages five times their age through how not to treat each tree as an individual to be scrupulously catered to. The opportunity to work with the Eonir Mages as equals means that this is something the Jade Order becomes very interested in pursuing themselves, rather than something you need to organize through them, and so you simply hand the matter over to their custody and let them flood the province with every Jade Wizard that can shake free a month or two to explore Laurelorn and glean whatever insight they can.
Jade Wizards mainline this stuff which is a good look for them.

The transformation of the substance of the Aethyr into the Winds is a poorly understood process, but one thing that all accounts agree upon is that it is a turbulent process, with the Aethyric energy being subject to a harsh impact with the jagged edges of reality that are inevitably caused by the rifts that allow such energies into our world. However, if one is able to avoid the jagged edges to immerse the substance of the Aethyr into the depths of well-established and unfrayed reality, the transformation it undergoes is not into the energies with which we are so familiar, but to a gleaming liquid that has been given the name Aethyric Vitae. The main property of this liquid is that its ultimate transformation into Winds is frozen in time and waiting for some impact or contact with magical energies to unravel it, making it a reasonably safe and portable storage medium for large amounts of Winds. They also allow for easy access to Winds at the moment of their creation, Primordial Winds, which have interesting properties that can be put to at least one very interesting use...

As you're writing this, you try to strike a balance between stoking the interest of the two major parties who would be interested in the Vitae: the Dwarves, who would value it as a storage mechanism, and the Wizards, who would value it as a way to study primordial Winds. You think you've struck a suitable balance, but it's largely for the sake of academia that you're doing so. The Runesmiths are already very much on board, and you believe the Colleges will be scrabbling to get aboard as soon as you drop eight newly-minted Orbs of Sorcery in their collective laps. You start eyeing your schedule to see where room can be found for such a demonstration.

Not overly emphasized, but certainly not overlooked, is the way one might be able to source more of the materials. You can say with utter technical surety that it is not Daemon blood, but there are liquids involved not dissimilar to blood, and they are derived from life-forms not dissimilar to Daemons. You make sure that the text is loaded with enough theorizing that the blood of actual Daemons will not be able to gathered, reasoning that most such beings either naturally propagate, or maliciously seek to propagate, damage to reality that is incompatible with the existence or creation of Aethyric Vitae. Imagining the more straightforward problems with trying to bloodlet a Daemon are largely left as exercises for the reader, as it's far from your area of expertise.

[Aethyric Vitae, 2491. Pending.]
Man AV being finished finally is a HUGE deal.

[ ] Lord Seilph, the Mystic (NEW)
The Grey Lord, Lord Seilph, is currently erecting Waystones in Sylvania, and the suspected reason for one of the usually-reclusive Grey Lords to be so far from home is an interest in questionable magics. An interest that one could describe you as sharing. See if there's anything of interest to be found in a very cautious talk on the matter.
[ ] Pan's Treehouse (NEW)
Panoramia has previously been quite happy with her cottage, but when you're a Jade Wizard and you create a mind-bogglingly enormous tree, you can't not build a house in it. Witness how a Druid flexes.
[ ] Orb Reveal (NEW-ish)
The Orbs are made, the books are written, the time is right. You'll show them. You'll show them all.
[ ] Silk (NEW)
At long, long, long last, Francesco has finally figured out how to weave the We-silk into something that can be worn. Be there for its debuts into the various markets it is destined to disrupt, and make sure that one of the first pieces off the loom - or whatever it is they use - will be your silk sheets.
[ ] Karak Vlag books (NEW)
You have recently come into possession of a significant amount of books once owned by the magic users of the Fire Spire and heavily annotated by the Runesmiths Guild of Karak Vlag, two organizations that are now completely destroyed. The amount of lost lore they might contain makes your fingers itch. Set some time aside to read through these tragic remnants from an excised chapter in history.
I'm partial to the new options since they're all very interesting.

- There will be a two day moratorium to give anyone celebrating the holidays time to do so without sacrificing their involvement in this thread.
- Merry Christmas to those that celebrate it. I got you Grey Lord social, and orb flex, and Pan fluff, and silk sheets.
- Credit for the Portentiv name goes here. There was a truly mind-boggling array of puns amassing until that was suggested and swept the vote.
Merry Christmas.

Wait silk sheets? It's a Christmas miracle!!!
It truly is.

Oh boy. Social vote knife fight is gonna be vicious.
It's going to be so insane.

Ah, the silk is here at last! Looking at the timeline, took about a decade. Agonizingly long for a human (or a Quester), but I imagine by Dwarf standards that's either good time or even pleasantly early.
It's been a while.

"Finally, the eight orbs of power, and the paper which shall cause a create upheaval by the theories and understanding it shall shake. It shall be most glorious and i canno- OH shit the Silks finished, gotta celebrate that" - Thread apparently
^^^

You know Eike is for her level utterly terrifying for other casters:
  1. She knows how to dispell and she's good at it with a whopping 17 learning
  2. She can cast an even more powerful version of silence which is quite problematic for casters who are not skilled enough to use magic silently
  3. She is pretty skilled with that greatsword she's carrying around
What I'm saying is the tradition of the No Fun for other Wizards lives on :V
She's being made into a Caster killer.

WE-SILK IS HEEEEEERE!

Between AV and We-Silk, the Colleges are going to be scrambling. Invaluable silk-armor that can be won by wizards into battle AND trying to capture Apparitions to figure out how to controllably bleed them without killing them so Orbs of Sorcery can be reliably produced.

Eike clearly needs some more magic and enchantment training if she's got this level of affinity for it this young. Way too much potential for us to pass up a chance to teach her our Shadowsteed mastery (seriously, being able to travel at speeds comparable to a car limited only by your own endurance for a smooth ride rather than a horse ride is a big deal) or train her on how to make devastating use of Mindhole and Take No Heed, etc..

It also strangely makes sense that the Jade Wizards would have a natural instinct for communicating with forests in more oddball ways, because while the Eonir might have extensive practice and learned excellence, Jade Wizards have attuned to and partially transformed their very souls into the energy forests draw to them and are filled with.

Elrisse continues to provide me with minor amusement at how she points out how things could be technically considered highly illegal or shady, to the point that I feel like she feels an outsized need to be the voice of reason in this gaggle of relative mad scientists considering every method they can think of before considering all the problems associated with them.

Glad to know the AV book will make it clear that trying to use the capture-and-bleed method on daemons is not only stupid, it's probably bound to failure by nature of daemons disrupting the neutral and real environment AV needs to exist. While the incentive provided by AV for really ramping up efforts to capture and contain Apparitions will be too great for the Colleges to ignore, it should also give the Colleges enough push to more strongly back the "Apparitions are not Daemons" stance.
It's overall a huge boost for the Colleges.

We-silk is extremely useful in ways other kinds of silk just isn't. While silk-for-clothing would be a non-product for Cathay, the two other kinds of silk would be extremely valuable. Silk armor is the kind of thing that can provide an entire layer of protection against physical attacks and fire, while fitting under other forms of existing armor (or over it), making it highly desirable for elite warriors and VIPs. The rope-silk would be of great use for anything involving a crane, and Cathay undoubtedly makes extensive use of sea and riverine trade. Bonus points for both products being light enough and flexible enough to be a very practical good to haul across a continent in a trade caravan.

Still, if anything, it would just increase the overall appeal and volume of trade between the Old World and Cathay. Because while the Old World's demand for silk clothing and sheets might be met by the We, there are still a variety of lucrative trade goods from Cathay with eager buyers in the west and now a couple of lucrative trade goods from the west with soon-to-be-eager buyers in the east.

But it will be quite a while before the amount of We-silk produced establishes its own dominance over the Old World and demand for We-silk armor and We-silk ropes is sufficiently met in the west for lucrative trade with the east to be worth the risk and cost of buying the silk to sell to the east in the first place.
It's very useful stuff.

To summarise the last six months: we started three large scale waystone infrastructure projects, revealed AV and the Morbs, resolved a major dispute within the Runesmith's guild, found an ancient holy site, built a trade route into Laurelorn, unleashed the Jade college upon the Eonir, unleashed a Grey Lord upon Sylvania, broke the economy with We-Silk, and somehow found the time to make a musical instrument that detects dark magic as a side project.

Did I forget anything?

"Unseen but not unfelt" continues to only be half true.
She's been doing a lot.

Was rereading the update, and...

Aksel and Hatalath have been working on the game trail method of transmission, and in the places where suitable game trails can be found, it seems to work very well. There are natural limitations on this method based on it being subject to the presence and movements of wildlife, but it's no more so than the other possibilities, and there is the potential of using this as a starting point to adapt the ritual into something the Amber Order would be able to deploy.
This is not a terribly serious suggestion because we don't exactly have a lot of time on our hands, but it'd be fun to invite an Amber or two as guest participants to make this game trail tributary.

"But Parabola, why? We already have three other tributaries."

Listen. I think Hatalath might black out if you showed him a stereotype of a primitive human wizard being incredibly good at Ghur.

There is, tragically and inevitably, gulfs to be found between academic theory and harsh reality.

With the amount of money that's gonna be flowing through the EIC after this, an auditors division is definitely something to prioritize.
Only if we particularly care about money being skimmed. Actual dangerous corruption has already been accounted for through EIC-half-actions. The auditors action would be more about ensuring minimal cash leaks out as it passes through.

Today I googled "armour of skjaldour" to try and find more information on how exactly its protection works. I made a mistake by thinking it was spelled with a j, but fortunately, that let me discover the mythological figure Skjoldr, who I believe the armour is named after. Sadly, none of the info on him in his wikipedia page has any relevance to protective magic, or magic at all.

Still, the accidental etymology discovery was fun.

Skjold, no r, means shield. Possibly a reference to that as well?

My interpretation of Eike's mastery is that if she used it on someone she stabbed, he wouldn't be able to bang on a pipe to draw attention but people would realize what had happened when he staggers out in front of them dripping blood.

I'm definitely for Silk (at long last) and Orb.

Th rest….hmmm…. I'm fairly neutral towards Pan's treehouse since I think it could be taken next turn. I want at least one Foreign Relation vote so I'm voting for all of them. I'm also kinda neutral towards Grey Lord, though for a different reason than Panoramia. I think I kinda want Niedzwenka.

Eike Quest New
It is late in the evening on the first of Rachexen, and the sun has already set. A silk-gloved hand works furiously to write correspondence by lanternlight, boxes of letters stacked neatly on the finely crafted oak desk of your office as they await their introduction to the Imperial postal system where they will be sorted by urgency into the care of carriages, couriers, pigeons, and pegasi. The day after Hexenstag is always a busy one, but the amount of work that remains to be done bodes ill for your free time in the year to come.

Ordinarily this would not be an issue of significant concern, but recent circumstances have forced you into a rather unusual and precarious position.

For you are Eike Hochschild, and you must wear two hats. One is pointy, grey and comfortable, while the second is insubstantial and shrouds the first. You are a Grey Wizard sworn to uphold the ideals and laws of Sigmar's Holy Empire, a magic user wielding the shadowy powers of Ulgu—and somebody whose very existence terrifies the nobility, as it is the remit of the Grey Guardians to wield the Sword of Judgement upon them should sufficient cause be given. You are the Governor of the Eastern Imperial Company—yes, that EIC, the economic juggernaut dominating Stirland and expanding rapidly in the southern and eastern trade routes of the Empire, particularly with the dwarfs of the Karaz Ankor and the elves of Laurelorn.

This is a troublesome state of affairs for many reasons, three of them paramount:

Firstly, because the EIC enjoys close ties with the newly ascendant Empress Roswita Van Hal of Stirland, who is eager to begin the great work of reshaping the Empire in her image. As part of the faction that brought her to power, you, of course, are expected to be just as enthusiastic in doing your part to carry out her will, whether that's expanding connections to Tor Lithanel, currying favor from dwarf kings, or crushing the Reikland cartels that have begun colluding with their Marienburger counterparts. It is within your best interests to complete these tasks with a deft hand—while it is difficult to refuse an Empress directly, it is much less difficult to oppose her indirectly, and the EIC serves as a convenient target for those opposed to her vision. Failure in this endeavor is not an option: You must Keep the Wagons Rolling, lest you disappoint the Empress.
Objective revealed: Manage the expansion of the EIC. You do not want to disappoint the Empress.

Secondly, because Grey Wizards swear a Vow of Poverty, and are not permitted to accumulate property or wealth not of direct and practical use to their cause. Ostensibly, this vow acts as a safeguard against the easily abusable powers of cryptoclastic thaumaturgy—or so the Magisters of the Grey Order claim. In practice, the Order allows a great deal of wiggle room for the enterprising Grey to accumulate tidy sums, so long as they are suitably subtle about it and do not draw any attention that would disrupt that illusion. Unfortunately for you, directing the EIC is not a role well suited for subtlety, and so the side-eyes of the Grey Order are upon you with a clear message: Do not mess this up. Maintaining the facade will require toeing a very careful line, lest you serve as an example for the ire of Bursar Wilhelmine von Bucht.
Objective revealed: Maintain the illusion of the Vow of Poverty. You do not want to anger the the Grey Order.

All of that would probably be manageable were it not for the third reason—that the real Eike Hochschild has elected to undertake a two-year-long research sabbatical in faraway Ulthuan and remains out of contact, having departed the week before Emperor Luitpold's death. For the Dämmerlichtreiter's former apprentice, managing the company, navigating the Grey Order's internal affairs, supporting the Empress, schmoozing with the Allies of Man, and all the rest would have been doable, expected even.

For the Perpetual Apprentice she hired to maintain appearances in a decidedly much less hectic political and economic landscape, well.

You, 'Eike Hochschild,' have big shoes to fill.

Good luck.

You'll need it.
Objective revealed: Preserve your cover as Eike Hochschild.

YOU HAVE FIVE(5) SHINIES.

[HAT]: Before she departed for the White Tower, Eike Hochschild gave you a wizard's hat with the ability to project an illusion of her likeness. The Doppelganger enchantment lasts for six hours, and is recharged every day at dusk.

As a wizard with the 'Windherder' trait, Eike was able to cooperate with another enchanter(s) to provide your wizard's hat with additional effect(s). What manner of spell(s) was this? (Must not be Shadow Magic. Maximum of Two effects, not including Doppelganger)

[HAT][ ] Petty Magics: 0 SHINY per effect. (Counts as half of a spell)
[HAT][ ] Lesser Magics: 0 SHINY per effect.
[HAT][ ] Relatively Simple Magics: 1 SHINY per effect.
[HAT][ ] Moderately Complicated Magics: 2 SHINIES per effect.
[HAT][ ] Fiendishly Complex Magics: 3 SHINIES per effect.
[ ] Battle Magics: 6 SHINIES per effect. You cannot afford this.

[MAGIC]: As a Perpetual Apprentice, magic is difficult, but not impossible, for you to learn of your own accord. By default, your magic score is 1.

[MAGIC][ ] +1 Magic score: 4 SHINIES.
[MAGIC][ ] Petty Magics: 1 SHINY per spell.
[MAGIC][ ] Lesser Magics: 2 SHINIES per spell.
[MAGIC][ ] Shadow Magics (Relatively Simple): 4 SHINIES per spell.

Failing an Objective will result in a Quest End. In the next update, you can acquire more SHINIES... in exchange for more Objectives.

You can assume that your character is reasonably able to maintain Eike's original objective of pretending to be her while making no significant moves.

Vote by Plan.

There will be a 2 hour moratorium.

I have no idea where 'Eike' Quest came from. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everybody!

I think I've lost track of the number of times I've had to point out that if you don't know where the money goes, you can't say it does not go to the enemies of the empire.

If our anti corruption taskforce knew where the money goes, there would be no option to make an auditor's division.

I do have to ask, is it all that bad if Nordland ceases being relevant and/or is simply absorbed into Ostland in the coming century? Political change isn't always bad.

Not really no, I think that is one of the reason no one has seriously proposed getting involved. It's not like we care about Norland as a province, we are in this to make the Empire as a whole stronger, more than that to make all the sane nations of the Old World better able to weather the coming of the Everchosen and other calamities.

I can never remember what does the Dammerlichtrieter title mean again?
"The Dämmerlichtreiter," the man breathes.

You blink in surprise at him. "The what now?" You had been prepared for all sorts of reactions, but not calling you that.

He stares, wild-eyed, pointing accusingly. "You! The Rider of Dusk! The woman who rides the coming of night across Stirland, bringing ruin to the enemies of the Hunter-Count!"

You stare back, and a delighted smile spreads across your face. "I mean... gosh. I hadn't realized people had been noticing. The Rider of Dusk? That's... wow." You bask for a moment, but duty calls. "Anyway. Not why I'm here."
The way I remember it is Dämmerlicht( Twilight) + reiter( Rider) . (Also it's my favorite word in this quest)

Nordland acting as a counterbalance to Middenland has had at least one good outcome- they're creating tensions in the Cult of Ulric about gender and racial segregation. While I don't think it's a good idea to wade into that ourselves because of politics, I think it's really good that it exists. But it would probably sputter out and die if it wasn't being used as a proxy.

Beyond that, it's been hammered home pretty often that, even beyond most provinces, Nordland has it's own unique culture. Having cultural meltover from Norscan settlers is really interesting to me, and the thread recently had that discussion about the inherent advantages of unique and differing perspectives to the same issues. If the people of Nordland became part of another province they would face difficulty there, whether from conscious distrust of all things Norscan or from the simple fact that their new leadership won't be part of it.

That's not even going into the type of lowercase c chaos that inherently comes with the fall of a regime. I do agree that not all change is bad, and I can see counterpoints to everything I just said, but I think Nordland remaining as a state is still better than the alternative.

Given just how much of a political hammer the Waystone Project, and their possession of High Mages which are indispensable for it, is for the Eonir the Elector Count of Norland would be well served ceasing all hostility and trying to establish relations from their own end. Things have tilted so overwhelmingly against them it might actually lead to peace as Laurelorn now no longer needs to fear them even in the mid-to-long term.

The low-key funniest outcome would be the Elector Province of Laurelorn ngl

Realistic, probably not

I think a surprising number of people in the Empire, at least among the nobility, would be all for it. Who doesn't want their own high mages they can call on in a time of war? Trouble is I do not think the elves would go for it. There is just too much to gain from being able to formulate their own foreign policy, not to mention lingering distrust from all the conflict over the years.
