Okay, I call this Plan Gabriel Warzone. Since we now have treaty guarantees of no more attacks in the CBZ and SBZ I've drawn down our forces there. Not to ridiculous levels, but far fewer ships. And I sent those spare ships to the Gabriel Border Zone. 35 Combat there... a "proper fleet".

What do you think? Too much pulled away from the SBZ and the CBZ? With all the warnings about how "bloody" it's going to get, I think we need overwhelming force in the GBZ.

Long run it works better for us, our shipbuilding is kicking into gear still and it gives us more time to deal with the syndicate what we do need to do is secure some of the gbz sooner rather than later

Also this let's the Explorer Corp explore. Honestly hopping we here about some new space creature we encounter like some of the early logs.
So, the Cardassians have decided to let us build up our fleet for a few more years and finish with the Syndicate before war breaks out?

This will go down in history as the treaty that sealed the doom of an empire, and the rise of the federation to Alpha Quadrant hegemony.

Like I said. Never deny your enemy the opportunity to make mistakes. :drevil:

Remember that these three new clients we found are increasing the Cardassian economy significantly.

Downside is that with these clients pumping a lot into the Cardassian economy, their production is also going to keep growing further. Upside is, that the longer peace continues, the higher the chance that some clients will become disgruntled and will split off since they see no reason to pay tribute for protection against an enemy that doesn't even want war.

Two of these clients, the Konnen and the Goshawnar, I feel are beyond us. They both seem to be puppet governments or deeply in the Cardassian's pocket. The Dylaarians, looking at how they're operating Jalduns, were probably convinced how there's a "big bad Federation out there" and were convinced to join for the sake of survival.

- The Federation will refrain from diplomacy with Cardassian affiliates [FDS NB: "openly"]
I wonder what that means. Suppose the Dawiar and the Caitians have some conflict over who has the rights to a newly discovered mining site. Does this mean we can't try to resolve the conflict as we are not allowed to engage in diplomacy? Do we have to ask the Cardassians first? And how do their associates like the idea that they aren't allowed to have independent negotiations with Federation members?

I have trouble believing that something like that is going to work. So maybe I misunderstand that stipulation?

Am I the only one who wishes this was Canon Kardashians (fucking autocorrect more right then it knows) cardassians the try to fuck over every Raceway meet as completely as possible strip mining their planets and enslaving their people?

More to the point, we can't really engage in covert diplomacy with people on the far side of Cardassian space.

However, the Yrillians conduct so much trade with us and our coreward affiliates - and their central government is so unstable - that covert diplomacy with them shouldn't be hard at all, and we can probably get the Dawiar to initiate secret talks with us just by batting our eyelashes at them from across the Straits of Themis.

Now, what we've learned about the increase of Cardassian resource income is troubling. However, between the Indorian and Apiata ratifications and any new affiliates we manage to pick up in the next couple of years, I'm confident we can stay ahead. Especially if we spend as much pp as possible on 1mt shipyard expansions and use those to spam Miranda-A's.

EDIT: Also, apparently the loss of Cardassian support has cut the Syndicate's resilience in half, meaning that the Cardassians were funding them much more heavily than anyone realized. Oyana's government is going to be furious at Cardassia. I think that with a bit of diplomacy, we can get a much bigger income dividend from the wealthy Orion Union once we've finished the worst of the Syndicate War.

If we want to build up our military, do we HAVE a more efficient option than the Miranda-A?

I don't think so, at least right now. Still, could be a great exercise for the ship design thread to see if they can build something with better stats but a similar cost-efficiency like the Miranda.

EDIT: Oh, this is great. We seem to already have some builds in the other thread.

What do you think? Too much pulled away from the SBZ and the CBZ? With all the warnings about how "bloody" it's going to get, I think we need overwhelming force in the GBZ.

I think you should put T'Mir in the GBZ and pull one of the Centaur or Mirandas for Rigel. Remember T'Mir has a veteran crew, which gives +2 to all stats except defense. T'Mir has the combat skill of a Centaur or Miranda while being as durable as a Connie-Bee. That and having a sensor package that beats a green Excelsior. The only downside is the lower defense value, but in combat or for science purposes T'Mir is better than a green escort in most every respect.

Edit: Plus, this neatly helps with the worry of Cardassians utilizing cloaked ships.

The most prototyping can take is 3 years. Research maybe 2, if that, because I can definitely make designs with only existing parts. I would say a low estimate is 3 years total and a high one is 5.

The worst thing about the agreement with the Cardassians is that I see nothing that forbids them from meddling with our associates. Couldn't our diplomats at least get that?

The Treaty will also mean that we will have to push any new species we meet to associate status as quickly as possible, before the Cardassians can move in. (Well, except for species that are far away from Cardassian space.) And diplo-pushes have beome expensive. Damn.

So, the Cardassians have decided to let us build up our fleet for a few more years and finish with the Syndicate before war breaks out?

And then at least a year to produce the first wave of them, so 4 years minimum before we can have a meaningful amount.

Will this treaty hold out for four years?

Hate to burst your bubble but the Cardassians will be building up their fleets too.

Even with their new clients to fund them, I'm confident that time is on our side.

When war inevitably begins, Bajor should be our first target. Not only because of the wormhole and Prophets, but because it's very close to Cardassia Prime. Cut off the head of the Union with one swift strike.

Captain Diego Zaardmani - Assigned to Commander, USS Torbriel, from Lecturer, Starfleet Academy

You might not have noticed. But the best sensorsm'n in the fleet was just assigned command of the Oberth attached to the Anti-syndicate Task Force.

Notes: In Q2 2312 send the Torbriel to Vulcan Sector.

Briefvoice, did you have a particularly good reason for shuffling Zaardmani and his expertise off to cool his heels on Vulcan, or is he just going there to fill a measly 1D hole in our roster? I'm inclined to believe that he's doing us an awful lot of good where he is (scanning passing ships for contraband to prevent Syndicate smuggling/operations), so I wouldn't want him moved without especially compelling justification (say, if we wanted extra high-end Science capability in the Gabriel Expanse to scan for cloaked Cardassian vessels, as a specific followup to credible intel indicating the existence of such a threat).

2313.Q1 - The Herald of the Heavens
Vice Admirals Eriksson and Sulu join you shortly after the news of the Celos Treaty filters through. Ships have been in motion, and at high alert at that, for a while now, preparing to respond to any possible Caradassian assault. The advantage here is that it will allow you to shuffle your deployments swiftly and effectively. And you'll need that advantage. The CBZ and SBZ should, and even in your mind there are scare quotes around 'should', be quiet now. But the Gabriel Border Zone is about to become a madhouse. Who and what can you spare. What will the conditions be like?

The Councillors on the negotiating team are telling you to expect it to be a bloody struggle. Certainly, the Cardassians will have no qualms with throwing lives away in pursuit of this unclaimed territory.

You feel sick at heart to be participating in some insidious land-rush, but every planet they plant their flag on, there too is set the flag of autocracy, of submission, of slavish devotion. It would be wrong on a fundamental level to allow such a cruel spirit to spread further through the stars.

The line must be drawn in bright fire, drawn not from intolerance, but from hope for sentient people to breathe in the air of freedom. You will stop the onslaught of the Union and their twisted anti-Federation, this Axis of Fear, into the Gabriel Expanse, and you will claim it for the free people of the Galaxy, with the sincere hope that the day will come when Cardassians, Sydraxians, and others may stand and count themselves among that number.

-

"Do you have a Commodore in mind for Gabriel?" asks VAdm Eriksson.

"In truth," you begin slowly. "Depending on the number of forces we can draw into the sector, I may see about making it a command led by a Rear Admiral, with Task Forces beneath them."

"Okay, that could work, but we'll see where we end up," replies Eriksson.

"Am I to understand that the Council is not relaxing any of their stated garrison requirements?" asks Sulu.

You sigh at that. "You would be correct in understanding that."

"Then we will need to do some balancing," continues Sulu. "So, what do we need in Gabriel?"

"We need a mix," you say. "We need heavy hitters, like the Connies and Excelsiors who can go fight nose-to-nose with Jalduns and Kaldars. And we need hulls, who can provide the escorts for convoys. The hitters secure the area, protect the escorts, the escorts do the work of protecting the auxiliaries."

Eriksson taps away at the padd and then smiles thinly. "Alright, let's see what we can bring together."

The low defense value makes it much harder for the T'Mir to avoid/escape unfavorable engagements, and the veteran status makes her virtually irreplaceable. Risking 6 units of veteran crew in likely combat when there are already Excelsiors around with similar science score and refitted escorts with similar combat ability that can be replaced easily doesn't make much sense.
