Captain's Log - Prologue - 2302.Q1
USS Cheron, Stardate 20757.8

"Sir, we are about to make the drop out of warp," calls the helmsman of the last Constitution-class ship in Starfleet.

"Very good, Lieutenant T'Piar," replies the Vulcan man in the command chair. Captain Revak watches his helm and ops bridge crew like a hawk, wanting his ship's return to its normal station in the Vulcan system to run like clockwork. They have just spent a month patrolling the Romulan Neutral Zone, making a tour of all the listening posts and outposts that make up the border defence. It was a somewhat restrained flying of the flag, made in response to recent tensions with the Romulans, but it went largely without incident, and Revak is now glad to be home. He just needs to make a quick stop by one of the outer planets, but then the ship will be back in Vulcan orbit.

"Dropping out of warp in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... now," calls the helm, and the viewscreen flashes as they translate back out of subspace.

"Helm, take us into orbit around Delta Vega," orders Revak. "Number one, instruct the transporter room to stand by to beam up the outpost scientists."

"Yes, sir," affirms T'Piar. "Enteri-"

The entire ship lurches and a moment later a booming clang bursts through the ship. Consoles spark and flash, while unseated bridge crew tumble and scream. A series of lights flicker and fall dark on the starboard side of the bridge.

"Tactical," snaps Revak as he keeps his grip on the arms of his command chair. "Yellow Alert, shields up!"

"Shields are raised, half-power only," the tactical officer. "Our ventral shields are not responding."

"Damage report," follows up Revak.

"Automated systems are reporting ventral hull breaches in the secondary hull, several decks, several frames."

"Engineering," calls Revak with a tap of a communicator.

"I'm near as busy as a one legged man in an arse-kicking competition, Skipper, I haven't time to talk!" comes a static-filled reply.

"I need a report, Commander."

"Warp core is damaged, annae think she's breached, I dinnae if we can ... oh, sweet Christ, that's torn it, Engineering out."

Revak glances back at his Tactical officer, another Vulcan, who simply raises a confused eyebrow. Right up until a series of noises and lights start flashing on his console, when honest panic appears on that dispassionate face. "Captain, the Warp Core has been ejected." A half-second later and all the main lights go out, leaving only harsh red emergency lights.

Revak goes pale as a ghost as his ship begins to drift without mains power in an unstabilised orbit.

Captain's Log - 2302.Q1
Acting Captain's Log, USS T'Kumbra, Stardate 20757.9

This, uh, I mean, um, this is the log of Lieutenant-Commander Percival Amin, acting captain of the Miranda-class starship T'Kumbra. We were ordered to break orbit with all possible speed to r-render aid to the USS Cheron. The captain was on the surface of Vulcan to witness a friend's kal-if-fee and we couldn't raise him to beam him back aboard. So, uh, hey, acting-captain. Only non-Vulcan officer on board, but acting captain, off to save one of the two most illustrious serving Vulcan captains, nothing could go wrong here!

Uh, right, the USS Cheron. She's now settled into a stable orbit around Delta Vega, but she has a dirty big hole, in the secondary hull. We, uh, don't have many details yet. We almost couldn't haul her into stable orbit in time. We as in, the T'Kumbra and the Vokau, she's the Soyuz-class that patrols the system with us. We didn't have the juice, because ... I mean, sure, they're not an Excelsior, but a Connie still masses as much as both of our ships combined. It's ... uh, it's a big ship.

Thankfully, the engineer from the Cheron beamed over and took over from the acting chief engineer here, and he was able to interface the T'Kumbra's warp core waste heat exchangers with the navigational deflector and the tractor emitters. With the cooling, we were able to re-route half of the ship's energy to counteract Delta Vega's gravity and pull the Cheron into a stable orbit. Once we have the rest of her crew squared away in emergency quarters and the Vokau brings back technicians from 40 Eridani A to inspect the ship's integrity for towing back to Vulcan, we can finish up here.

-

Captain's Log, USS Enterprise, Stardate 20758.2 - Captain ka'Sharren

We have been requested for a little jaunt by the Federation diplomatic service, and are headed back to Amarki space to meet a delegation over one of their colony worlds in the Typhus-Sigma system. Apparently our display of martial prowess with Admiral Aelin's flagship made a good enough impression that the diplomats believe we can help tip the balance of a new treaty.

To be honest, I'm normally no fan of these kind of exhibitions, but I'm looking forward to meeting the Amarki again.

-

Captain's Log, USS Sarek, Stardate 20759.1 - Captain T'Lorel

We are currently near Klingon and Romulan space, at the north end of the neutral zone, and will be headed further towards the Galactic Centre. Today we will finish mapping the Ulysses System, where we have unfortunately not found anything ... I have just received a message from the bridge that a Romulan task force has warped into the system.

[Sound of door opening]

Yellow Alert, raise shields! Communications, open a hailing....

-

Captain's Log, USS Courageous, Stardate 20759.2 - Captain Eaton

Brief captain's log: we are headed to join the Sarek in the Ajax System, just out from the Klingon Border. Captain T'Lorel has reported encountering a Romulan task force skirting the northern edge of the Neutral Zone, consisting of two D7 Cruisers, two Birds of Prey, and one powerful warbird whose design we have not seen before. T'Lorel is concerned because when the Romulan fleet warped back out, they headed towards Klingon space. We are concerned that there is a plot to frame the Federation...

Ah, we have arrived.

-

Captain's Log, USS Sarek, Supplemental, Stardate 20759.5

We are at Red Alert. Our warp engines have allowed us to outpace the Romulan task force, slowed down by their D7s. We have arrived in system at the Klingon colony world of Tregh'bak, and spoken with the local commander. They are woefully under-defended for the force coming their way, and Captain Eaton and myself have decided to join the defence.

-

Captain's Log, USS Courageous, Supplemental, Stardate 20759.5

I have fought the Klingons on more than one occasion. Today I will fight alongside them to defend colonists against Romulan attack. Klingon reinforcements have arrived in the form of two K'tinga Light Cruisers, but these colonists will still die without us. I can only hope that the Klingons look on this as a hand of friendship, to renew the good will made at Khitomer.

The Romulans are here. The Courageous goes to battle.

-

Director's Report, 40 Eridani A Shipyards, Stardate 20760.3 - Commodore Sirvk

Our preliminary analysis of the USS Cheron is complete. A more thorough analysis is currently being undertaken, however, we can already guarantee that the Cheron will be undergoing repairs for the majority of this year, and will require substantial resources to replace damaged components, to say nothing of the replacement warp core. Nor to say anything of the environmental effects of the uncontrolled matter/anti-matter annihilation initiation that followed the ejection of the damaged warp core in the upper atmosphere of Delta Vega.

As for the cause of the damage, it appears to have been an explosive package that was stored within the pattern buffer of Transporter Room 2 in the secondary hull. When the circuits were re-energised, whose signature has not been confirmed but may in fact have been a Type VI Photon Torpedo, immediately detonated, tearing a large rent in the ventral sections of the secondary hull. Casualties were extensive.

How this device entered the pattern buffer, the the circumstances around the explosion, will no doubt remain a matter of ongoing investigation.

[USS Cheron dry-docked for 3 turns - Repair costs of 20 Bulk Resources and 40 Special Resources are required to restore the Cheron to working order. 1 Pt of Officers, 2 Pt of Enlisted, 1 Point of Technicians killed in the blast]

-

Captain's Log, USS Sarek, Supplemental, Stardate 20760.4

We have come through the battle unscathed. However, the last twenty-four hours have been very busy. We have left Klingon space with the Courageous, though not without receiving a personal message of commendation for our "ferocity" from the Klingon Chancellor. Captain Eaton assures me that this is a positive message.

Why the Romulans were looking to attack the Klingon colony that sits at the top of the neutral zone is unknown, and even the Klingons could not satisfactorily answer this question. The border has been quiet heretofore.

[Relationship with the Klingon Empire improved. Have learned of a new 2m ton Romulan explorer in existence]

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Enterprise, Stardate 20762.3

I have learned many things in my time in space, things wondrous and amazing. Things that have challenged my understanding of the universe, upended my world to its very core. Things that have struck me mute and agog at the beauty of the galaxy.

Well, today I have learned that Amarki wedding rituals are initiated by offering your personal sidearm to another Amarki.

Doctor Asurva and Commander Ajam are trying to figure out how to help me get out of this but the diplomats are refusing to help, as they think it's just grand that I'm now married to a Senator.

-

Starfleet Commander's Log, Stardate 20763.5

The decision to repair or scrap the Cheron will have to be made soon. The cause of the accident is known, it was definitely a Type VI torpedo that detonated within the secondary hull. However, we still do not know the how, or the why of the matter, and this is very concerning. A wave of unease has gripped the Federation Council, especially in light of the actions of Captains T'Lorel and Eaton. I have personally backed their decision to intervene in the besieged Klingon Colony, and although a few individual Councillors held my feet to the fire over it, the Council as a whole are in agreement that it was the only viable course of action for a Starfleet officer to take.

The Romulans ... are still as inscrutable as ever. If they have been angered by the intervention in their colony raid, they show no sign. Our diplomats tell us that the Klingons are angered, but not overmuch as the colony was saved.

[Threat Level + 1 - Federation beginning to renew pushes for further diplomatic channels with the Romulans]
[Excelsior USS Kumari along with 2 Centaurs deployed to the Romulan Border Zone from Unassigned Pool]
[1 Constellation and 1 Miranda deployed to Vulcan from the Unassigned Pool]

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Enterprise, Stardate 20764.6

Things have ... progressed in ... let's say, other than expected directions.

[Unknown Voice] Who are you talking to?

Leaniss, shh, these are official logs. Now, as I was saying-

[Unknown Voice] Are you still trying to divorce me?

Senator! ... Computer, we'll resume later.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Enterprise, Stardate 20766.4

We have reached a beneficial decision for all parties. Senator Leaniss has taken on a field commission into the Explorer Corps of Starfleet as a Lieutenant, we are no longer married, and even the diplomats are pleased. Although one of the Federation Councillors sent me a subspace message to inform me that if anything untoward occurs to the Senator they would have me hauled before every manner of court, board, panel, and committee in existence.

But then again, what else is new?

Still, the Senator promises to be very helpful when conducting diplomacy, particularly diplomacy under fire.

[USS Enterprise gains Senator Leaniss, +1 to Presence]

2302.Q2 - The Snakepit
2302.Q2

You watch on as Captain Revak answers the questions of the Federation Council with traditional Vulcan aplomb. He is one of a number of senior officers of the ill-fated USS Cheron to answer questions from the Council regarding the events leading up to the deadly incident.

Everyone is still calling it an "incident" for now. Was it an attack? Was it an accident? If it was an accident, the transporter chief is certainly not around to answer for it, reduced as he was to constituent protons in a wash of anti-matter. If it was an attack, well, they have covered their tracks well, and most of the physical evidence went the same way as the late transporter chief.

You don't feel too sorry for Revak at the moment. He is getting softball questions from the Council, with the Vulcan representatives heading off anything too probing. Well, even if the Council is doing this for show, your own departments are in the middle of a very thorough review of their own.

The head of Starfleet Ops does get a withering cross-examination from a Tellarite for having sent the Cheron to the Neutral Zone for a tour, and a further blast for assigning the new USS Kumari there instead of Vulcan. Soon after it is your turn. There isn't too much that gets thrown your way, to your relief. You suspect that your appointment of Vice Admiral Sousa has put you in good standing with a number of the Councillors. The final question they ask you is something you don't even know why they bothered. It should have been publicly available news.

"What is to be the final disposition of the USS Cheron?"

"We have been..."

[ ][CHERON] ... scrapping her.
[ ][CHERON] ... repairing her.

After that you got to settle down to making your side of the presentation, and you and your team began to put forward some proposals to the Council instead of just fielding questions. It occurs over a series of days of meetings and sub-committees and presentations, and requires you to harness all of your senior officials, but you make some strong progress in earning...

Captain's Log, USS Courageous, Stardate 20852.8 - Captain Victoria Eaton

A proper mapping mission is a nice change of pace after going into battle against the Romulans. We are in the Olian System, and running sensor sweeps.

-

Captain's Log, USS Enterprise, Stardate 20854.3 - Captain Nash ka'Sharren

We have been requested by the diplomats to conduct the final phase of a trade deal with the Orions. The crew is looking forward to this, and I have had to be careful to restrain their enthusiasm. This can be a dangerous place for the unwary. The nightlife on this planet has teeth.

Well, if you ask right, anyway.

-

Captain's Log, USS Kearsage, Stardate 20855.6 - Captain Rachel Ainsworth

A distress call a few light years out from Tellar Prime has been received, a Yrillian vessel in distress. I have taken the Kearsage to respond.

-

Captain's Log, USS Sarek, Stardate 20855.9 - Captain T'Lorel

We have made an unexpected first contact in the Oriolis System. Their warp signatures were being masked by the unusually heavy stellar winds of the Oriolis star.

They are a race of heavy-set warriors, who are at a technological level similar to Earth a bit more than one century ago. Regrettably, they do not have deflector shields, nor an understanding of them, for a number of their small attack craft collided with our shields while performing close passes of our ship in what I am informed was intended to be a "threatening" manner. This was deemed cause for an all-out attack, however, by directing all energy to shields, we were able to render ourselves effectively impervious to harm. After waiting out their attacks, we hailed their commander and were able to return to diplomacy.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Enterprise, Stardate 20856.1

Initial discussions have gone ... very well. Saurian brandy dodged, Romulan ale, dodged, and ...

Ah, it's too late for this, I'll make my report in the morning.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Kearsage, Stardate 20856.2

We have arrived in the outer reaches of the Basroil system, and have encountered the YSS Luthu, which has suffered the misfortune of terrible helmsmanship. While navigating the asteroid field, they got too close to an asteroid and collided with one, shearing off one of their warp engines entirely. However, they are using a very peculiar plasma intermix which is generating very hazardous radiation that effects much of my crew, but not Yrillians. Thankfully, the Science officer and Chief Engineer have worked together on a plan to create a resonance between the two deflector dishes of our ships to create a protective bubble around our ships. With this, repairs will be able to continue. In the interim, we are learning much about Yrillian culture.

[Gain +10pp, gain +10 relations with Yrillians]

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Enterprise, Stardate 20856.8

Hangover avoided.

Senator Leaniss is likewise ready for more meeting; the Amarki clearly have a tremendous tolerance for alcohol. Some of my senior crew, and the diplomats, were not so fortunate.

On to business. Our arrival into the Orion system was quite the scene. Ships came out from everywhere to watch the arrival of the Enterprise-B. The reputation of our name precedes us. And, dare I say it, the reputation of her current crew. Lieutenant Stol's course into orbit was a masterpiece of flying, speed and precision, showing just what an Excelsior can do. To my frustration, everyone on the planet is seemingly trying to sell us something, usually flesh, and getting from place to place can be a problem. The Senator gave up on one particular peddler of dancing girls and hit the lot of them with the stun setting.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20857.8

My crew apparently is beginning to think that I am nuts. Nonetheless, I will not leave this system yet. There is something wrong about these sensor reading, even if I cannot quite put my finger on it yet.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Sarek, Stardate 20855.9

This new race call themselves the Dawiar, and are, I believe, even more argumentative than the Tellarites. Still, they have been willing to listen to us, and diplomatic channels have been opened.

[Gain +5 political will, new first contact starting at 15/100]

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20859.3

Well then. That's one for the power of late nights and Lady Grey tea. There was a misalignment between the three emitters of the sensor array. I suspect it came about during evasive action during out battle with the Romulans. Withe the sensors properly calibrated, we have uncovered a deposit of easily accessible special materials.

[Gain +25 sr]

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Enterprise, Stardate 20859.6

We have the deal. Doctor Asurva and Lieutenant Leaniss were instrumental in making sure nothing could derail proceedings, and truth be told the most challenging part of the mission was simply riding heard on overeager officers.

[Gain +25 sr from a one-off trade deal between the Federation and Orion, gain +10 to relations with Orion]

Omake - Captain ka'Sharren Gets Married - AKuz
I wrote another thing, based on the 2302 Captain's Logs for USS Enterprise-B

As a warning, the following contains content that is emotionally super gay, so if that's not your thing... > : V
(Also it is really hard to find appropriate Trek music for this bit so I gave up because I'm like, p tired right now)

Captain Ka'Sharren Gets Married

USS Enterprise, Stardate 20762.3

At 35, Enterprise Captain Nash Ka'Sharren is a seasoned Starfleet officer. She'd done and experienced much. She's fought Klingons and Romulans. She's been places that no living being has ever been, she's seen wonders that most cannot imagine, she's even been inside a world as it shattered and died.

But until now, she'd never been married. It was not exactly what she expected when she woke up that morning, nor what she'd expected when she agreed to host a diplomatic gathering in Enterprise's formal lounge.

----------------------------

Captain Nash Ka'sharren stands resplendent in her black and crimson Starfleet dress uniform, ribbons and medals pinned across her chest, and a ceremonial Ushaan-tor blade of her people clipped to her waist, shining in the Enterprise's light.

She stands together with her XO, Commander Maryam Ajam, making small talk with the head of the Federation delegation to the Amarkian Sovereignty. "Good to see you again Ambassador Tharn. I take it that your mission to Amarkia has been successful so far?"

"Oh, very, The Amarki Sovereignty is a delightful combination of aggressiveness and xenophilia."

A Human aide smiles and leans in, "Many Amarki have already begun to apply to the Academy as associate candidates, they're real eager beavers!"

Nash smiles and nods, she's never heard the term, but she can gather the meaning, "Yes, I've experienced that… eagerness and Xenophilia first hand during our first contact. The Amarki seem remarkably curious about the outside galaxy for a people with such a militaristic history"

Nash's XO takes a sip of something blue, "They are very friendly if sometimes unpredictable people. I think they'll make good candidates for Federation membership."

A familiar voice comes from behind, "I'm pleased to hear that, Commander Ajam." Admiral Aelin comes from the direction of the buffet table, plate of chilled fruit in his hands, "I'd recommend we join just for access to these vegetables, Amarkia's food can be dreadfully dull"

"Well, I'm glad that our proposed trade agreement covers such things then," says the Human aide earnestly.

Captain Ka'Sharren tries not to roll her eyes; Ambassador Tharn had been adamant that she behave herself tonight, "So, Admiral, how are you enjoying your visit to Enterprise?"

The alien officer swallows a hunk of apple. "I'm enjoying her buffet spread almost as much as I enjoyed her chasing me through the rings of Karakia"

Ambassador Tharn looks briefly worried, before the Amarkian Admiral continues, "Which is to say, I am enjoying myself a great deal, I can't remember if I told you how much fun it was fighting Enterprise, I've never gotten such a good fight." he chuckles, "It might not have looked like it at the time, but, well, I don't like losing, especially in front of my best friend's daughter."

The Enterprise's Captain perks up, her antennae focusing on the Admiral. "Speaking of Senator Leaniss, I had expected her here tonight, I remember seeing her name on the guest list."

"I had been wondering that myself," added Ambassador Tharn as the human aide and Commander Ajam nodded in agreement.

A sly look passes across the Admiral's face, "Ah, well, I'll let that stay her surprise."

The Andorian diplomat keeps a neutral smile on his face, as he glances up and sees one of the Amarki dignitaries step away from the drinks table. "I hope you don't mind Captain, Admiral, but I need to have a word with Proconsul Alaero."

The Admiral nods, "By all means Ambassador, I think I'll pick Captain Ka'Sharren's brain on starship tactics." He shrugs at the diplomat's retreating back. "Ahh, well, I like Ambassador Tharn well enough, but he hasn't beaten me in ship to ship combat yet."

"Speak of the De- I mean, speaking of the Senator," Commander Ajam says, looking across the room as the twin doors slide open and Senator Leaniss glides through, resplendent in a low cut green dress with golden filigree and lacework. Clipped to her side is the sixty centimeter long ceremonial blade of the Amarki people.

"I almost feel underdressed now," whispers Commander Ajam to her CO, unconsciously tugging at her crimson dress uniform.

The Senator walks across the room towards the small group, the other attendees parting as Senator Leaniss smoothly glides through the crowd.

"Ah, Uncle Aelin, Commander Ajam" Leaniss nods deferentially, before looking at Captain Ka'Sharren with what the Andorian will later describe as a 'Predator's Grin,' "Captain Nash Ka'Sharren, I am so pleased to see you again."

The Captain grins back, remembering her shore leave on Amarkia, "As am I, Senator Leaniss, I regret that our time together during Enterprise's first visit was far too short."

Commander Ajam keeps a carefully neutral expression and decides that now is as good a time as any to inspect the quality of the buffet table.

"As do I, Captain, in fact, I'd like to do the honourable thing because of that." Leaniss clears her throat and straightens up to her full 190cm height, back perfectly straight, and unclips her ceremonial blade. "Captain Nash Ka'Sharren of the United Federation of Planets, I offer you my blade and my honour, may our lines be ever friendly into eternity"

The lithe Amarki holds out her blade, held upon her upwards facing palms, and the Andorian woman takes it after Admiral Aelin nods at her with a wide grin on his face.

From over at the buffet table, Commander Ajam frowns as she picks over the collection of cold meats and cheeses, something from her memory is trying to get her attention, something from the diplomatic briefing earlier.

Captain Ka'Sharren smiles, confused, as she takes the Senator's blade, "Thank you Senator Leaniss, I, ah, also wish for our two lines to be friendly into eternity."

Commander Ajam freezes, the gears in her head turning, as she watches Admiral Aelin prompt Ka'Sharren to reply in kind with her own ceremonial weapon. She notices that all the Amarki delegates have stopped whatever they were doing and are now intently watching the Captain and the Senator.

Something clicks, and the Human officer all but runs back to her Captain.

It's too late though, and the Amarki begin politely clapping as Leaniss leans in to kiss a surprised Ka'Sharren.

"Ma'am!" says Commander Ajam stridently, "Ma'am!"

Captain Nash turns to her XO with a bemused look on her face as she gently tries to pry the Senator off of herself. "Sorry, Commander, I seem to be busy at the mome-"

Ajam cuts the Andorian off. "Ma'am, that was a wedding."

"No, you need four peo...ple...", Ka'Sharren's trail of thought suddenly derails as the full import suddenly sinks in, "Ohhhhhhhh," she says.

Admiral Aelin places a hand on the Captain's shoulder, "Congratulations, Captain Ka'Sharren, you are a very lucky woman, the Leaniss line is very prosperous and very powerful. Senator Leaniss was perhaps the most eligible single woman on the planet." He smirks. "And I can't think of a more worthy spouse for the Senator." He bows stiffly. "Now if you will excuse me, the buffet tables calls". The Admiral steps away, headed back towards buffet table and the cold fruit tray, leaving the newlyweds to their own devices.

Captain Ka'Sharren looks helplessly at the Admiral's retreating back and then between Commander Ajam, and surprised but pleased Ambassador Tharn, before settling on an extremely smug Senator Leaniss. "I think we should talk," she says.

-------------------------

Captain Nash sits on the small couch placed in her quarters, she's made it up as a small bed, with starfleet insignia-ed blankets carefully tucked into its cushions.

She's still wearing her dress uniform as she speaks to the Enterprise's computer, it has been a very long day. "Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Enterprise, Stardate 20764.6" she pauses carefully choosing her words, "Things have ... progressed in ... let's say, other than expected directions."

Senator Leaniss slides onto the couch beside the Andorian, she's shed her formal dress, for something… lighter, and places her chin on the Andorian's shoulder as she wraps her arms around her new wife, "Who are you talking to?"

The Starfleet officer makes a hushing gesture with her hands, "Leaniss, shh, these are official logs. Now, as I was saying-"

"Are you still trying to divorce me?" the Amarki woman asks, as she pulls away from the Captain angrily.

"Senator!" Nash sighs, " Computer, we'll resume later.".

The Captain turns to face the senator and gently grasps her arms, looking directly into her unexpected wife's eyes, "Leaniss..." she starts.

The Senator huffs, "You can call me Larai now, Nash. We're married, you may use my heartname."

The Andorian lets out a breath. "Okay, Larai… this is what I want to talk about." She pauses, looking for the right words. "I wasn't ready for marriage, I'm still not"

The Senator moves backwards angrily crossing her arms. "Then why did you treat me like you did? Why did we-" she starts to tear up.

Ka'Sharren tries to think fast, she's beginning to wonder how much of this sort of thing Kirk's had to deal with, the legends never talk about Kirk going through this sort of thing, "Leaniss -Larai, I never intended to court you for marriage, I apologize if that was the impression that you got." she takes a deep breath, "and marriage, to only one person… That's quite the commitment, a traditional Andorian marriage is a full quad." She pauses for a moment, pointing first to Leaniss, "Just you" then points to herself, "and me. That's a big scary step" she puts her arm around Larai. "That's not to say that I don't like you, or that I just wanted to use you. I do like you, but… well I have Enterprise, my responsibility is to her and her crew, not to myself."

Leaniss Larai closes her eyes and sighs deeply, "I think deep down I knew that" she opens her eyes and leans into Captain Ka'Sharren, "I just… as a Senator, marriage is a political tool. I was stuck having to choose between a dozen boring, dull, dependable suitors"

The Amarki sits back up and looks into the Captain's eyes. "Then you come to our system, and it was so Romantic… you were interested in me not as a political tool, but as a person. And you're so dashing and adventurous, the sort of person that I would never be allowed to be."

The Starfleet officer chuckles slightly. "It's almost more trouble than it's worth sometimes."

Larai sniffs, and takes a deep breath. "Still, I would have liked to see everything that you get to see." she giggles slightly, "I guess that I was a little mopey after you left, and Uncle Aelin tried to cheer me up, he suggested that I look into a marriage with someone from your Federation… of course that would just be another type of political marriage"

She turns her head to smile at Ka'Sharren. "Then you came back… I realised what an opportunity I had, no one in the Sovereignty could deny your importance or your desirability as a marriage prospect. And I knew that you didn't see me for my power or my wealth, and well… I guess I deluded myself into thinking that I could marry you and go on your adventures." She smiles weakly. "It would be like a child's fairy tale, so Romantic and so Daring."

The Amarki separates herself from her wife, "I'm so sorry. I can talk to some people about divorce, or whatever else you want " She hugs herself. "I can understand if you don't want to speak with me again. I can go -"

There are tears forming in the corners Nash Ka'Sharren's eyes as she reaches out to pull the Senator into a hug, "No, don't… don't beat yourself up, everyone has those days when you do something silly." She pauses. "Or rather, not silly but uh... " She sighs deeply. "Okay, Larai, I admire your boldness and confidence, I think we can work something out… you can stay as a liaison to Starfleet, I might even be able to swing a commission, maybe as a Diplomatic officer?"

The Amarki blinks heavily, trying to push tears away, "Really? You can just do that?"

"Not easily, but I think we can work it out, like I said, you're definitely officer material, you have diplomatic and leadership experience, and Starfleet is always eager to let new peoples into the Federation, this would be a good example of, uh, 'mutually beneficial cooperation' between us."

The senator smiles broadly, her tears are gone and she's become very excited, "This is almost everything that I wanted! I used to dream of exploring space as a little girl."

Nash Ka"Sharren smiles. "Same." Her face becomes serious. "However, Larai, if we do this, I need you to know some things. We do have to divorce, and if you are on my ship, we cannot maintain any sort of relationship."

The Senator and future Starfleet Officer nods slowly. "I understand, I may not be military, but my people are, we understand about such things."

"That doesn't mean that I won't be fair to you as a Captain, or that I won't be your friend." The Andorian smiles lopsidedly. "That doesn't even mean that we can't try this again someday if we still feel that something is there. But I don't want you to keep a torch for me just because of... All this. It wouldn't be fair to you, you should keep your options open." Ka'Sharren grins, pulling her wife into a close hug. "You are quite the catch after all."

"That I am." She lowers her voice to a sultry growl. "However. Tonight you're still my spouse, Mrs Leaniss-Ka'Sharren," says Larai, fiercely pushing Ka'Sharren back into the couch cushions.

(Honestly, this is 50%+ keeping Ka'Sharren unattached for moar Kirk-like action > : P )

Captain's Log, USS Enterprise, Stardate 20983.1 - Captain Nash ka'Sharren

It appears we have met fellow explorers!

While in orbit around a jungle planet without sentient life, we were joined by a starship and hailed. They come from a neighbouring starsystem, the Vineria System on our books, but known to the locals as Risa. Peaceful explorers, looking for new experiences. As the first outsiders they have met in space, we have been invited back to their world to be feted.

Normally I would be suspicious, but while their ship is probably on the level of the old Starfleet Ranger-class, the generation before the Constitution, their weapon systems wouldn't have looked out of place on an ancient Kumari-class, or an NX! The most pacifist member of the Federation Council would ask, "Can we interest you in a phaser...?"

I shudder to think of what would happen if the Klingons found them first.

Captain's Log, USS Sarek, Stardate 20984.4 - Captain T'Lorel

We have finished scans of the Firaian system primary, and are now preparing to go to warp. We should be at warp already, but that manic idiot on the second helm shift has...!

I'm not sure what just came over me, I seem to have lost control of ... Computer, current date, Vulcan calendar.

Captain's Log, USS Courageous, Stardate 20984.9 - Captain Victoria Eaton

I noticed a sensor anomaly in our reading near Kadath V, and have brought the Courageous in to investigate further. There is a tremendous artificial geological formation present, a great series of concentric rings, surrounded by pillars. If pressed, I would suggest it has an almost religious overtone. We have moved into geostationary orbit over the formation and will send down an away team with Commander McAdams.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental USS Enterprise, Stardate 20985.3

This is a paradise world, a world of setting suns that burn warmly over the tropical islands. The waves whisper across pure sands, the wind sets locks of hair to ripple. I've never known a place like this before. And the locals are so friendly!

Very friendly, even. My crew is enjoying shore leave even more than they did in Orion. You don't have to watch your back so much. Actually, at this stage, I'm simply waiting for the other shoe to drop! Of course, perhaps in a way, the very peacefulness is the other shoe. I'm not sure what Risa can contribute to the Federation. Myself and Sena-uh, make that Lieutenant Leaniss, have been spending time talking with planetary leadership, and the Federation diplomatic service. The USS Calypso is being rushed here with a human ambassador.

They were going to send a Vulcan ambassador before I told them what an idiotic idea that was.

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20985.7

Something isn't right with McAdams. She hasn't been the same since she beamed back up, but I can't put my finger on it. She's been spending her time down in Engineering, giving me time to speak with other senior officers, and they have noticed it too. I'm not sure what to make of it. I'll have to just sit her down to tea, I ... something's wrong. Bridge, this is Eaton, who authorised shutting down the warp core? ... I know already because I've been on starships for longer than you've been alive, Ensign. Who shut down the Warp Core?

... Thank you, Eaton out.

Miss McAdams, what are you doing... I need to speak to the Science Officer.

-

Chief Medical Officer's Log, USS Sarek, Stardate 20986.1

I have officially confined Captain T'Lorel to quarters on doctor's orders while we transit back to Vulcan. It is all a bit meaningless, as she suggested it herself. I personally think it's a bit mad to take the whole ship back, but good luck if you want to go toe-to-toe with the Vulcan Federation Council members on a matter of pon farr.

Beyond that, T'Lorel is meditating in her quarters and is in good health.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20986.5

The possession is travelling from crew member to crew member, but we believe that we are able to stop it now. By feeding residual plasma through the warp coils to sustain a very weak subspace bubble, we can suppress the method that the unknown species uses to propagate. Although we don't have access to main engineering, we believe we can re-route a number of data connections to secondary engineering systems to get enough access for this to work. We won't have much time to act once this works; it will drain reserve power within the day.

I just pray it isn't too late. Whatever it is that is masquerading around as McAdams has control of half the ship already, including almost all of the secondary hull. It kills me to see her leading this. I know it isn't her but what if I can't set her free? None of our attempts to remove the neural overlay from captured crew have succeeded, and in at least one occasion killed poor Ensign Laird from a massive stroke.

I've been a Starfleet officer for thirty years, and I've never in all that time felt as broken as this before.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20986.7

The subspace bubble is up and working. But now we have a stalemate. The Ihrloth, as we have learned they call themselves, are refusing to negotiate. They are set on capturing this ship. They can no longer propogate, but I still only have one half of this crew versus the other half, and less than a day now. It will be a slaughter if I try to force the issue.

How can I lead one half of my heart against the other half?

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20987.4

We are almost out of time, but the Science officer has broken through in the final over, it seems! A remodulation of the phaser will break the neural overlay of the Ihrloth. Better, we can use the deflector emitters in the saucer section to transmit the signal. I am having the crew fake a surrender while I make for main engineering. We are almost out of time, I need the warp core back on to continue the subspace bubble.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20987.5

She's back.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20988.4

We are picking up the pieces of the calamity. The Ihrloth are destroyed, but we have lost good people, and the battle has caused internal damage to the ship. We are laying in a course for Starbase 3 in the Andor System. God knows, the crew need the repair as much as the ship. Even I have been badly shaken by the experience.

But I have her back.

[USS Courageous fights off possession attack. USS Courageous undergoing repairs at Starbase 3 for one turn. 1 pt of Enlisted Explorer Corps killed. +10 RP, +10 pp gained. Crew Experience increased to Veteran]

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Sarek, Stardate 20994.5

I will be serving notice to Starfleet shortly that my marital status has changed, and that I am bringing my family onboard. Sulak, my childhood bondmate, and I have wed. Although he is a civilian, he is a very talented engineer who worked at 40 Eridani A, and I believe he shall make a valuable contribution.

My first assignment to him is to work with the Chief Engineer to ensure our quarters are properly soundproof.

Digest of Report on USS Cheron Incident of Stardate 20757

Torpedo believed to be brought aboard while exchanging supplies and research samples with the Arkarian III-4 Outpost, where transporters are inhibited by the magnetic field of the Arkarian III gas giant. It is believed that one of the outpost staff was an infiltrator. After the shuttle had passed within the deflector shields of the USS Cheron, the saboteur activated the shuttlecraft's own transporter, and sent the torpedo that had been sitting within the shuttle's transporter buffer, and transferred it to the buffer of Transporter Room Two on the Cheron. Specifically, they were transferred into the Primary Lead Cache of the Phase Transition Coil. This had the net result that the moment power was fed into the Energizing Coils of Transporter Room Two, the Type-IV Photon Torpedo rematerialised on pad four. It immediately shifted into Target Acquisition mode, and an 47 microseconds later initiated matter/anti-matter annihilation.

How the saboteur was able to perform a site-to-site transfer to what should have been an inactive transport buffer is still a matter of some speculation, but security logs do indicate that one of the members of the Arkarian III-4 Outpost crew did access a terminal in shuttlebay and shortly afterwards there was a partial energisation of the Transporter. We don't know the reason given for allowing access to the terminal, as the officer who approved the request was vaporised in the subsequent explosion. Suffice to say, a ruse of some form is believed to have been performed to gain access.

Attempts to track back the suspected saboteur have reached a dead-end. He disappeared from the outpost shortly thereafter.

It is the opinion of Starfleet Intelligence that this does bears the hallmarks of a Romulan operation. We are still attempting to discover what may have prompted this aggressive action. One leading theory suggests that the Romulans are attempting to both destablisize the Federation by striking at the the image of a safe and secure environment, in order to degrade our ability to attract further membership, and also to send a political message to the Federation that the Battle of Cheron is long past, and that they are willing to fight again if necessary. Another theory is that the science samples that the Cheron picked up from a number of outposts may have contained something that the Romulans did not wish us to discover. The delivery of the torpedo to Transporter Room Two as opposed to One also bears this out, as the pattern buffers for Room Two are located adjacent to many of the store rooms, and indeed, the science data the Cheron carried was lost. A third theory is that this is a warning to us not to interfere if the Romulan Star Empire attacks the Klingon Empire.

Our investigation into this matter is continuing.

Starfleet has ordered us to Kadath V, where the USS Courageous encountered a hostile entity on the planet. We are to examine the extent of the threat and look to neutralise it. We will be arriving in-system shortly. I have laid out strict protocols for the crew to follow.

While I am aware that the Federation Council regard the Ihrloth as an intelligent species, they may very well pose an inimical threat in their present form. If it comes to it, I am willing to accept such consequences as are necessary. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Space always challenges our imagination as well as our understanding of the universe. We are in orbit around the Biroth binary system, which consists of two tightly orbiting neutron stars.

Matter passes between the two dense bodies in enormous arcs of colour and heat. The sensor readings of the magnetic field between the two stars is ... Is indescribable. It would move a Vulcan to tears. It is also extremely dangerous, with radiation waves we don't even have a theoretical basis for yet.

My first chance to properly stretch the new girl's legs. Maximum warp to respond to another case of plague in an outpost near the Romulan Neutral Zone, this time Korlonia II. I have long made my suspicions regarding these matters known to Starfleet, and I would be shocked if others were not coming around to the same views.

Thankfully, this time we are responding with the science and medical facilities of an Excelsior, rather than a Miranda or Constellation. Let's get to the bottom of this.

The Courageous is in dry dock at Starbase 3, in orbit around Andoria. Rosalee and myself were the last ones off the ship. She has been acting ... ashamed since the incident with the Ihrloth at Kadath V.

Apparently the crew who were possessed remember everything they were made to do. I've given everyone leave and left the ship to the care of the Starbase engineers, something I am loathe to do but needs must.

For myself, I have broken my finest tea leaf out, and booked passage for myself and Rosalee to the surface.

Lieutenant ch'Cherren and four enlisted crew are gravely ill after a failure of the radiation shielding surrounding the port nacelle failed as a result of intense solar activity. They have been bathed in an unknown form of radiation. We are now in a race against time to understand the strange and mysterious energy flow between the two stars.

It is summer in Andor, which apparently means cardigan weather. You would be a very brave soul indeed to flounce about in a swimsuit here, though the local Andorians don't seem to mind the cold. A pity, for the beaches are wonderful. But we are heading up towards the mountains. I'm taking Rosalee camping. I think getting away from anything involving more technology than a kettle boiler will do her some good.

She has told me she is thinking of resigning after what happened at Kadath. I spilled my tea I was so furious at the thought. I told her she should instead put her hand forward for promotion to Captain. She'd make an excellent master for a vessel. If I haven't burned my promotion chances at Kadath by nearly getting my ship captured, I'll probably make it through to Commodore, and a shore assignment. The newest Excelsior is rumoured to be a new Explorer Corps ship, and I want Rosalee to do her damnedest to get it, even if it means we split up for the first time. I can't allow her to give it away.

Sensor scans are complete. We now have an extensive mapping of the peculiar energy fields of the Kadath V anomaly site, and an understanding of how they interact. I will lead a team to the surface via shuttlecraft, where we can use the warp coils of the Type-5 Shuttlecraft to emit a very weak but broad subspace bubble, effectively neutralising the opportunity for neural alteration. I have taken the liberty of having the science officer and tactical officer work together to modify the Number 3 Phaser Bank to fire the anti-Ihrloth pattern phaser developed by the Courageous.

My god. This is the same mutagenic virus seen at Ulith III by the Challorn. The area has been quarantined carefully, which regrettably meant that we had to utilise a site-to-site transport to return a desperate, but infected, man to the quarantine area. The ... the sensor readings we are getting there are horrific. Whatever this phage is, natural or artificial, it is a horrific creature. One of my labs is working on it, but all the officers and technicians doing so are volunteers who are aware that it will be emergency vented to space in the event of any containment loss.

The raw power that flows between these two neutron stars is immense. Anything that passes through it is subjected to an enormous shower of exotic particles that are generated in a sort of low-level nucleosynthesis in the high-energy tidal stresses generated by the two stars. In fact, my science officer tells me this is so destructive that the two bodies can only remain like this for, at most, a hundred thousand more years. A blink of the eye to the astral scale.

However, this destructive power may have a recuperative function. We will pilot the Enterprise through this maelstrom at high-speed, trailing via tractor a parcel of alloys. After reviewing the theoretical effects of this energy field on exposed materials, Doctor Asurva believes that she can concoct a substance that will absorb the radiative materials that are in our injured crew's bloodstream. We have another parcel as well, as the Science Officer has a theory that certain alloys could be made superconducting by exposure to this field.

The USS Cheron has been relaunched on schedule, with all damage repaired and replacement crew on board. There were a few reshufflings of crew but Captain Revak still commands. They say the man has a built-in deflector shield, things that would torpedo another's career bounce off. No matter I guess, he's still a talented commander and I suppose he wasn't really to know.

I have returned from the surface, after examining the site and communicating with the energy forms there. The Ihrloth are, in my opinion, resolutely hostile to all conventional forms of life. However, I have learned much from reviewing the bas reliefs that are inscribed on the concentric walls of the site. The Ihrloth were a cult that belong to another species, whose current status we can only guess at. A million years ago, they apparently formed this place and converted their physical forms into pure energy, and set up this site as a trap, to replicate themselves in passing starfarers. The crude mechanical seeming pillars that surround the site in fact contain sophisticated arrays of conductive material that make possible the patient zero possessions, such as that which happened with the First Officer of the Courageous.

After submitting to thorough medical examination by the ship's Chief Medical Officer, I ordered phaser strikes to destroy the surrounding pillars. The Ihrloth are no longer able to commence their system of infections.

We have been unable to effect a cure to the disease, but we have made some progress on analysing the plague. We have sent all our research details to Starfleet Medical Command's Infectious Diseases Institute. The surviving, uninfected members of the outpost have been beamed aboard to a carefully shielded cargo hold, and thoroughly scanned. All were clean, thankfully. The quarantined area on the surface has been destroyed by photon torpedoes. We are returning to the hub of RBZ operations, where we will meet the USS Challorn, who will convey our physical samples of the disease to Starfleet Medical's high-security lab.

I just hope someone can make a breakthrough on this. The things sensors showed in that quarantined area...

Lieutenant ch'Cherren and her engineering crew are expected to make a full recovery after our mad dash through towering solar flares and gravitational stresses. The materials reacted just as we hoped.

In addition to saving my crew, this also opens up amazing opportunities for bulk production of superconducting material if a colony can be set up in this system somehow. I will suggest it to Starfleet.

We've reached the summit of one of the mountains in the western range, and watched the dawn break over the horizon and spread across the land beneath.

When Rosalee saw it, I could see the change come over her. The dawn swept away the shadow behind her eyes and put the wonder of the stars back in them. We didn't say anything, but I know that she'll continue on now. We've never been to Andoria before, but this is the wonder of our jobs, to seek out new worlds, to see the greatest marvels that a galaxy of grandeur and terror can offer us.
