I've been trying to think of an appropriate bit of thank you for this. I think for one thing, I'll adopt the the female Leaniss (as someone pointed out to me, this is the fandom that gave us the term Slash, so it's all in keeping :V) and these stories as official canon, and your senior officers get added to my promotions tracker to one day show up in the list of viable captains.

For another... (for @AKuz only)
[ ] Cultural Exchange - +150 to diplomacy with Amarki.
[ ] Imagination - You get to PM me an episode uh, I mean event idea for Enterprise-B.
[ ] Forging a path - +.25 Explorer Corps Offiers as Amarki girls flood the recruiting places following Lieutenant Leaniss' example

Oh, wow, you're killing me, those are all great. I appreciate this a lot.

Also, I just want say that I really like this quest, it feels very.... Trek, it clearly looks like you're enjoying yourself, and I know I am.

I appreciate all the effort that you're putting in, like I said it feels Trek. The mechanics and the fluff are all well thought out and delightful. The characters are good too, especially our 5-year mission characters; like T'lorel is clearly a Vulcan, and clearly a Vulcan that gives approximately zero fucks. She's very self-posessed and confident. And Captain Eaton is a very proper but adventurous Commander, with her own little quirks, who throws herself into personal harms way at least as much as any other Canon Captain.

Heck, we even have the smartest Redshirt Captain in the entire franchise, who was like "Walls becoming flesh? Haha no. Time 2 b sensible"

Anyway, as you can clearly tell, I'm enjoying this quest immensely (what do you mean I've posted three ficlets in the last week and have another half finished, and my muse is filling me with ideas for two more?) and I get real excited when I see that little red, "Alert" button pop up in the upper right corner of my browser.

So, yeah. Thanks!

It's gratifying to know that all those evenings watching the Enterprise-D reverse the polarity again has paid off ;)

So, I'm looking at my options, and Cultural Exchange is the clear winner if I was going by Mechanics, because we'd easily be able to admit the Amarki within a decade or two if things work out.

But, I'm evaluating these things with my heart too (My grey 200 beats per minute Romulan heart > : V ), narrativly.

And Cultural Exchange still works, the Amarki are already Eager beavers > : V

And Imagination is real nice, I've got all sorts of Trek ideas (The naughtiest ones involve beautiful Romulan Commanders > : 3 )

> : P

But I think narrativly speaking I like Forging a Path best, especially because It'll always be there. It will be this tradition, Amarki girls will grow up hearing these tales about how the Federation contacted them and the beautiful and clever Senator Leaniss fell in love with Starfleet and with the dashing Starfleet Captain ka'Sharren, and then about all the Adventures she had. They'll learn that even from the start Starfleet and the Federation treated them as equals and let them grow to meet their full potential on thier own terms.

Starfleet becomes where you go to live out you dreams and be part of the Great Adventure. Leaniss will inspire Amarkii the same way that Kirk, and Archer (The Archer that Canon tells us existed, not Duchess) inspire Human kids. Someday a woman that grew up on the tales of Leaniss' adventures will sit on the bridge of an Enterprise next to Captain Maybe?Picard? And we can draw a historical line to this point.

Also more Explorer Corps peeps would be nice, too. > : V

I think I'll sleep on it and get back to you in the morning.

@OneirosTheWriter did you ever state what the Amarki even look like?

Blue Vulcanoids

Edit: My head canon is that they're not strictly blue, but they are much more cyan/teal tinted people than green Vulcans or Romulans. Still green blooded but sort of the Vulcanoid equivalent of being brown or dark skinned (Except Vulcanoids already can be dark-skinned, so this is just on a different colour axis)

Edit: Lol, didn't even give the poor QM a chance to respond
Sorry!

Space elves gotcha.

Great. And remember, the plans I posted aren't necessarily what I am advocating. They are there to help present a way to figure out what we want to have at the end of the process.

As for new ship designs, I think we might expect to be ready to start building new ships after 2312, having tested out a prototype or two. I don't think we'll be build them yet. Though really, I guess I have no idea how long a ship design project takes.

Here is the confusing thing about Escorts versus Light Cruisers. We can build escorts faster, but we aren't actually allowed to have more of them. Our fleet cap is our militarization level, which is the total of the Combat power of our ships. Since a Miranda or a Centaur has just as much combat as a Constellation, we can't have any more Escorts than we would be allowed if we just went for light cruisers. More, light cruisers have a higher Defense value, meaning it doesn't take so many to garrison a sector.

So the confusing thing is, for a numerous and flexible fleet that is spread everywhere... you actually want a Swarm fleet of Light Cruisers not Escorts. Escorts are only worth it if we have crew constraints or if we're having a lot of ships destroyed and need to replace them fast.

So really, for a Swarm we should be pumping out Constellations as fast as possible.
Something to consider about the Constellations is that while they were only about equal as combatants with the Miranda's, they were intended to handle the science and diplomacy duties that couldn't be taken by the Explorers.

However, the 80s-90s were something of a boom time for ship design, leading to the canonically "underpowered" Constellation.

But, the light cruisers will pretty soon start occupying that mid-weight tier properly, leaving escorts to be your easy to build and cheap ships that cost half or less, while light cruisers respond to situations in your home sector requiring science/diplomacy.

Or, whatever design or layout you choose to go with, this is just me explaining what the basic thought process was.

Did you factor in the SR mine under construction? Still having the totals we need for our plans will be helpful since we can estimate resources from income, with any increases from 5 year Exploration and any races that become members or mines being bonus.
Nah, decided against it: +15 was too finicky when compared to the nice round numbers we're currently using. Though, again a question for @OneirosTheWriter , have the Resource Stockpiles on Page 1 been updated? Or will you simply be doing so in the End of Year Summary?

Mmm, are we sure it's +15 per Turn for both rather than +15 per Year? I know it's what is written, but A) we recently had this miscommunication with PP from our new Staff Officer, B) it seems kind of weird that a resource that only comes in Per Year would have its value calculated Per Turn, and C) kind of OP to be getting enough SR for a Centaur every year for 10pp.

What about Research Net 1, that says +2 RP/turn, is that a per year?
oh goddammit -.-

yes -.-

Edit: have people been chasing research net on the basis of being +2 RP turn?

Edit 2: I'll meet people partway on that, and change it to +5 RP/year, rather than nuke it down to +2

Edit 3: For further reference, those +20/years get improved as you research the Mineral Extraction techs.

Oh ffs, I did it again.

People, any time I say per turn for something that is calculated on an annual figure, I mean per annum, because I only calculate income annually to cut down on workload. >:

Edit: as an apology, I have bumped it to a +20/year :<
Are the build times for the shipyards also years or quarters? Btw, you probably should avoid the word turn in general and always use quarter, year or something similarly unambiguous.

Heh, glad I was right about my expectations for that.

Though, @OneirosTheWriter , would you expand on the Starbases? The current ones we have are labelled as Starbase I; will there be a Research Tree to improve Starbases in a similar vein as Escort/Cruiser/Explorer? If we put in a request for a Starbase, what some of Timeframe is there to deploy it?

Captain's Log - 2302.Q4
Captain's Log, USS Sarek, Stardate 21055.7 - Captain T'Lorel

Starfleet has ordered us to Kadath V, where the USS Courageous encountered a hostile entity on the planet. We are to examine the extent of the threat and look to neutralise it. We will be arriving in-system shortly. I have laid out strict protocols for the crew to follow.

While I am aware that the Federation Council regard the Ihrloth as an intelligent species, they may very well pose an inimical threat in their present form. If it comes to it, I am willing to accept such consequences as are necessary. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Captain's Log, USS Enterprise, Stardate 21060.3 - Captain Nash ka'Sharren

Space always challenges our imagination as well as our understanding of the universe. We are in orbit around the Biroth binary system, which consists of two tightly orbiting neutron stars.

Matter passes between the two dense bodies in enormous arcs of colour and heat. The sensor readings of the magnetic field between the two stars is ... Is indescribable. It would move a Vulcan to tears. It is also extremely dangerous, with radiation waves we don't even have a theoretical basis for yet.

Captain's Log, USS Kumari, Stardate 21060.8 - Captain Rachel Ainsworth

My first chance to properly stretch the new girl's legs. Maximum warp to respond to another case of plague in an outpost near the Romulan Neutral Zone, this time Korlonia II. I have long made my suspicions regarding these matters known to Starfleet, and I would be shocked if others were not coming around to the same views.

Thankfully, this time we are responding with the science and medical facilities of an Excelsior, rather than a Miranda or Constellation. Let's get to the bottom of this.

Private Log, Victoria Eaton, Stardate 21061.4

The Courageous is in dry dock at Starbase 3, in orbit around Andoria. Rosalee and myself were the last ones off the ship. She has been acting ... ashamed since the incident with the Ihrloth at Kadath V.

Apparently the crew who were possessed remember everything they were made to do. I've given everyone leave and left the ship to the care of the Starbase engineers, something I am loathe to do but needs must.

For myself, I have broken my finest tea leaf out, and booked passage for myself and Rosalee to the surface.

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Enterprise, Stardate 21062.3

Lieutenant ch'Cherren and four enlisted crew are gravely ill after a failure of the radiation shielding surrounding the port nacelle failed as a result of intense solar activity. They have been bathed in an unknown form of radiation. We are now in a race against time to understand the strange and mysterious energy flow between the two stars.

-

Private Log, Victoria Eaton, Stardate 21062.6

It is summer in Andor, which apparently means cardigan weather. You would be a very brave soul indeed to flounce about in a swimsuit here, though the local Andorians don't seem to mind the cold. A pity, for the beaches are wonderful. But we are heading up towards the mountains. I'm taking Rosalee camping. I think getting away from anything involving more technology than a kettle boiler will do her some good.

She has told me she is thinking of resigning after what happened at Kadath. I spilled my tea I was so furious at the thought. I told her she should instead put her hand forward for promotion to Captain. She'd make an excellent master for a vessel. If I haven't burned my promotion chances at Kadath by nearly getting my ship captured, I'll probably make it through to Commodore, and a shore assignment. The newest Excelsior is rumoured to be a new Explorer Corps ship, and I want Rosalee to do her damnedest to get it, even if it means we split up for the first time. I can't allow her to give it away.

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Sarek, Stardate 21062.8

Sensor scans are complete. We now have an extensive mapping of the peculiar energy fields of the Kadath V anomaly site, and an understanding of how they interact. I will lead a team to the surface via shuttlecraft, where we can use the warp coils of the Type-5 Shuttlecraft to emit a very weak but broad subspace bubble, effectively neutralising the opportunity for neural alteration. I have taken the liberty of having the science officer and tactical officer work together to modify the Number 3 Phaser Bank to fire the anti-Ihrloth pattern phaser developed by the Courageous.

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Kumari, Stardate 21063.3

My god. This is the same mutagenic virus seen at Ulith III by the Challorn. The area has been quarantined carefully, which regrettably meant that we had to utilise a site-to-site transport to return a desperate, but infected, man to the quarantine area. The ... the sensor readings we are getting there are horrific. Whatever this phage is, natural or artificial, it is a horrific creature. One of my labs is working on it, but all the officers and technicians doing so are volunteers who are aware that it will be emergency vented to space in the event of any containment loss.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Enterprise, Stardate 21063.5

The raw power that flows between these two neutron stars is immense. Anything that passes through it is subjected to an enormous shower of exotic particles that are generated in a sort of low-level nucleosynthesis in the high-energy tidal stresses generated by the two stars. In fact, my science officer tells me this is so destructive that the two bodies can only remain like this for, at most, a hundred thousand more years. A blink of the eye to the astral scale.

However, this destructive power may have a recuperative function. We will pilot the Enterprise through this maelstrom at high-speed, trailing via tractor a parcel of alloys. After reviewing the theoretical effects of this energy field on exposed materials, Doctor Asurva believes that she can concoct a substance that will absorb the radiative materials that are in our injured crew's bloodstream. We have another parcel as well, as the Science Officer has a theory that certain alloys could be made superconducting by exposure to this field.

Superintendent's Log, 40 Eridani A, Berth 1, Stardate 21063.7

The USS Cheron has been relaunched on schedule, with all damage repaired and replacement crew on board. There were a few reshufflings of crew but Captain Revak still commands. They say the man has a built-in deflector shield, things that would torpedo another's career bounce off. No matter I guess, he's still a talented commander and I suppose he wasn't really to know.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Sarek, Stardate 21064.1

I have returned from the surface, after examining the site and communicating with the energy forms there. The Ihrloth are, in my opinion, resolutely hostile to all conventional forms of life. However, I have learned much from reviewing the bas reliefs that are inscribed on the concentric walls of the site. The Ihrloth were a cult that belong to another species, whose current status we can only guess at. A million years ago, they apparently formed this place and converted their physical forms into pure energy, and set up this site as a trap, to replicate themselves in passing starfarers. The crude mechanical seeming pillars that surround the site in fact contain sophisticated arrays of conductive material that make possible the patient zero possessions, such as that which happened with the First Officer of the Courageous.

After submitting to thorough medical examination by the ship's Chief Medical Officer, I ordered phaser strikes to destroy the surrounding pillars. The Ihrloth are no longer able to commence their system of infections.

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Kumari, Stardate 21064.2

We have been unable to effect a cure to the disease, but we have made some progress on analysing the plague. We have sent all our research details to Starfleet Medical Command's Infectious Diseases Institute. The surviving, uninfected members of the outpost have been beamed aboard to a carefully shielded cargo hold, and thoroughly scanned. All were clean, thankfully. The quarantined area on the surface has been destroyed by photon torpedoes. We are returning to the hub of RBZ operations, where we will meet the USS Challorn, who will convey our physical samples of the disease to Starfleet Medical's high-security lab.

I just hope someone can make a breakthrough on this. The things sensors showed in that quarantined area...

Lieutenant ch'Cherren and her engineering crew are expected to make a full recovery after our mad dash through towering solar flares and gravitational stresses. The materials reacted just as we hoped.

In addition to saving my crew, this also opens up amazing opportunities for bulk production of superconducting material if a colony can be set up in this system somehow. I will suggest it to Starfleet.

We've reached the summit of one of the mountains in the western range, and watched the dawn break over the horizon and spread across the land beneath.

When Rosalee saw it, I could see the change come over her. The dawn swept away the shadow behind her eyes and put the wonder of the stars back in them. We didn't say anything, but I know that she'll continue on now. We've never been to Andoria before, but this is the wonder of our jobs, to seek out new worlds, to see the greatest marvels that a galaxy of grandeur and terror can offer us.

Computer, End Log.

The diplomat continues to solve problems by orbital bombardement.

And the Enterprise continues with the relativly non-threatening finds.
Something seems wrong.
