Silence smothers the corridors of the vessel. Only the smouldering red glare of her emergency lighting holds back utter darkness. The heartbeat of the ship is still. She is quiescent, hibernating. Hibernating, that was it.

Please only be hibernating.

Debris litters the deck and dust motes map out the shafts of red light. The red light blends with the uniform of the woman striding down the corridor alone. She doesn't cease in her steps, she knows the layout of the grand vessel better than she knows her ancestral home now. Until the last week, the ship has been an extension of her will as it carries her through space. But not today. Like an amputation, her ship has been taken from her. Stolen in the most vile and treacherous manner.

The doors of main engineering open, and Victoria Eaton bellows into the void, "Show yourself!"

For several long seconds there is no sound but the echo bouncing to and fro. The warp core is silent as the tomb, standing in the middle of the room like a dark cenotaph. Then a voice answers from dark. "Hello, Captain." A shape emerges, walking towards Victoria. A phaser dangles in her hand awkwardly. The figure's eyes burn as they look at Victoria, fixed on her and her alone. "I should have known it was trickery."

"Treachery begets treachery," says Victoria tersely. "These are your wages, to be paid in full." Her phaser slowly levels off, aimed straight at the figure's face.

"Come now, Captain," the figure says. "We both know you don't have it in you to kill me." The figure begins to raise their own weapon.

"Ex Astris, Scientia, dear," says Victoria. With that she holds her breath, looks straight into the eyes of Rosalee McAdams, and fires.

Captain's Log, USS Enterprise, Stardate 20983.1 - Captain Nash ka'Sharren

It appears we have met fellow explorers!

While in orbit around a jungle planet without sentient life, we were joined by a starship and hailed. They come from a neighbouring starsystem, the Vineria System on our books, but known to the locals as Risa. Peaceful explorers, looking for new experiences. As the first outsiders they have met in space, we have been invited back to their world to be feted.

Normally I would be suspicious, but while their ship is probably on the level of the old Starfleet Ranger-class, the generation before the Constitution, their weapon systems wouldn't have looked out of place on an ancient Kumari-class, or an NX! The most pacifist member of the Federation Council would ask, "Can we interest you in a phaser...?"

I shudder to think of what would happen if the Klingons found them first.

Captain's Log, USS Sarek, Stardate 20984.4 - Captain T'Lorel

We have finished scans of the Firaian system primary, and are now preparing to go to warp. We should be at warp already, but that manic idiot on the second helm shift has...!

I'm not sure what just came over me, I seem to have lost control of ... Computer, current date, Vulcan calendar.

[Indistinct noise]

Tiar merra...

Captain's Log, USS Courageous, Stardate 20984.9 - Captain Victoria Eaton

I noticed a sensor anomaly in our reading near Kadath V, and have brought the Courageous in to investigate further. There is a tremendous artificial geological formation present, a great series of concentric rings, surrounded by pillars. If pressed, I would suggest it has an almost religious overtone. We have moved into geostationary orbit over the formation and will send down an away team with Commander McAdams.

This is a paradise world, a world of setting suns that burn warmly over the tropical islands. The waves whisper across pure sands, the wind sets locks of hair to ripple. I've never known a place like this before. And the locals are so friendly!

Very friendly, even. My crew is enjoying shore leave even more than they did in Orion. You don't have to watch your back so much. Actually, at this stage, I'm simply waiting for the other shoe to drop! Of course, perhaps in a way, the very peacefulness is the other shoe. I'm not sure what Risa can contribute to the Federation. Myself and Sena-uh, make that Lieutenant Leaniss, have been spending time talking with planetary leadership, and the Federation diplomatic service. The USS Calypso is being rushed here with a human ambassador.

They were going to send a Vulcan ambassador before I told them what an idiotic idea that was.

Something isn't right with McAdams. She hasn't been the same since she beamed back up, but I can't put my finger on it. She's been spending her time down in Engineering, giving me time to speak with other senior officers, and they have noticed it too. I'm not sure what to make of it. I'll have to just sit her down to tea, I ... something's wrong. Bridge, this is Eaton, who authorised shutting down the warp core? ... I know already because I've been on starships for longer than you've been alive, Ensign. Who shut down the Warp Core?

... Thank you, Eaton out.

Miss McAdams, what are you doing... I need to speak to the Science Officer.

-

Chief Medical Officer's Log, USS Sarek, Stardate 20986.1

I have officially confined Captain T'Lorel to quarters on doctor's orders while we transit back to Vulcan. It is all a bit meaningless, as she suggested it herself. I personally think it's a bit mad to take the whole ship back, but good luck if you want to go toe-to-toe with the Vulcan Federation Council members on a matter of pon farr.

Beyond that, T'Lorel is meditating in her quarters and is in good health.

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20986.5

The possession is travelling from crew member to crew member, but we believe that we are able to stop it now. By feeding residual plasma through the warp coils to sustain a very weak subspace bubble, we can suppress the method that the unknown species uses to propagate. Although we don't have access to main engineering, we believe we can re-route a number of data connections to secondary engineering systems to get enough access for this to work. We won't have much time to act once this works; it will drain reserve power within the day.

I just pray it isn't too late. Whatever it is that is masquerading around as McAdams has control of half the ship already, including almost all of the secondary hull. It kills me to see her leading this. I know it isn't her but what if I can't set her free? None of our attempts to remove the neural overlay from captured crew have succeeded, and in at least one occasion killed poor Ensign Laird from a massive stroke.

I've been a Starfleet officer for thirty years, and I've never in all that time felt as broken as this before.

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20986.7

The subspace bubble is up and working. But now we have a stalemate. The Ihrloth, as we have learned they call themselves, are refusing to negotiate. They are set on capturing this ship. They can no longer propogate, but I still only have one half of this crew versus the other half, and less than a day now. It will be a slaughter if I try to force the issue.

How can I lead one half of my heart against the other half?

-

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20987.4

We are almost out of time, but the Science officer has broken through in the final over, it seems! A remodulation of the phaser will break the neural overlay of the Ihrloth. Better, we can use the deflector emitters in the saucer section to transmit the signal. I am having the crew fake a surrender while I make for main engineering. We are almost out of time, I need the warp core back on to continue the subspace bubble.

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20987.5

She's back.

Captain's Log, Supplemental, USS Courageous, Stardate 20988.4

We are picking up the pieces of the calamity. The Ihrloth are destroyed, but we have lost good people, and the battle has caused internal damage to the ship. We are laying in a course for Starbase 3 in the Andor System. God knows, the crew need the repair as much as the ship. Even I have been badly shaken by the experience.

But I have her back.

[USS Courageous fights off possession attack. USS Courageous undergoing repairs at Starbase 3 for one turn. 1 pt of Enlisted Explorer Corps killed. +10 RP, +10 pp gained. Crew Experience increased to Veteran]

I will be serving notice to Starfleet shortly that my marital status has changed, and that I am bringing my family onboard. Sulak, my childhood bondmate, and I have wed. Although he is a civilian, he is a very talented engineer who worked at 40 Eridani A, and I believe he shall make a valuable contribution.

My first assignment to him is to work with the Chief Engineer to ensure our quarters are properly soundproof.

[USS Sarek gains +1 Hull, T'Lorel now married]

Well at least they were able to stop it without too much of the crew dying. Still out of action for a turn.

Improve soundproofing of a room- gain 1 hull :) Still I like her practicality.

Also Risa... well at least we have a planet for R&R now.

Also currently we will have 57 PP and 45 RP barring any other gains besides annual income. For the RP that means we are looking at 4 tech teams next time, so I think the same three as this time plus sensors since that is already started. Hopefully we can pick up at least 5 more RP over the next three turns.

Agreed, maybe warp tech if we can get a fifth (5 techs total including several weight reduction techs and one that will save us sr, also making use of our next best tech team and Sanik's bonus).

For the pp we should expand the Academy and replace the Academy Commandant so that we can set a higher proportion of exploration corps and science technicans, I'm interested in seeing what sort of boni are available, too.

Hello, I noticed that the affiliate relationships on the front page have not been updated to match the gains we had during the snakepit turn (2302.2)
Current Date: 2301, 4Q
Current Federation Affiliates:
Betazoids 157/500
Rigellians 140/500
Caitians 113/500
Amarki 100/500
Risa 100/500

2302.Q2

Current Federation Affiliates:
Betazoids 157/500 + 20 = 177
Rigellians 140/500 + 15 = 155
Caitians 113/500 + 7 = 120
Amarki 125/500 + 15 = 140

So does our new affiliate provide us the .25 officer increase from new Academy recruits or was that an Amarki only thing?

The Enterprise is beginning to seem like it lives a charmed 'life'. While the other two explorers deal with Romulan attacks and space monsters and civil wars and horrible body invaders, the Enterprise just tools around meeting friendly people and seeing amazing space phenomena.

After the end of the 5-year mission, the captains gather:

"So, who got married?"
ka'Sharren, T'Lorel hands up.
"Who's still married?"
T'Lorel hand up.
"Who's planning to get married?"
Eaton hand up.

In case anyone missed it @OneirosTheWriter has added an XP tracker to all of our tech teams. To go from 1 to 2 requires 3 XP, 2 to 3 is 4 XP and so on. It looks like each time they work a project they get 1 XP and the projects for this year and last year counted for XP gain. So we need three more years to raise both our Comp team and Comm team and Spock needs 4 more years.

Okay here is a design I tried out. Result of me fooling around and looking at how the formulas interacted. This is a ship devoted to fulfilling its role as an escort so no science or presence but tons of survivability.

Tentatively I would call it the Guardian Class.

Edit: Here is a version with 2 science and 1 presence but reduced hull and shields, still a tough cookie

Edit: To make the guardian Class work shield and hull need to be dropped by a point each. There is enough weight left for presence 1 as long as it take .75 power or less but no room for science as the power draw is too much for the warp core

I don't think you are supposed to get negative energy cost from low presence or defense, that's listed as something to fix in the todo list. Let alone make ugliness supply half of the energy needed to run the ship.
Since most of the energy is used for the shields I suppose they work on the principle that enemy beams and torpedoes shy away from touching something this gross?

Ugh, just noticed that.... going to have to go back and fiddle with the designs more now

Edit:Okay so C3 S0 H5 L3 P1 D3 should work as long as the 1 in presence only accounts for 1 power as this will use a power 20 warp core despite showing power 15 on the sheet and the spare weight is enough to account for the different weight of the warp core.

There may need to be a min function on the power of each component setting it to 0 instead of negative.

How did I not find this quest before. It is awesome! And very interesting gameplay mechanics too, very nicely reflects the differences between the Federation and the usual run of imperialist nation-games.

Saw that omakes get rewards here too. I feel up for some R&D writing, any projects in particular need a buff?
