On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

The regular rune of Waking does not need ingredients worth noting, you can plop it down normally.

But in return it does far less than the Master Rune does.

Master Runes made golems, lesser runes of waking are the sort you used in your deed. Used for super simple, low effort motions that don't require a high amount of force. Think double A battery to a Nuclear powerplant. This doesn't even touch other aspects of what the master rune can do either.

you can get it to move. you still need someone to aim, load and set off each thing respectively. Again, limited. Dont go crazy now :^V
so we need 4 animated mechs then to make a self firing artillery piece?

Would it have a bit more umph if we used Troll Hearts anyway? I ask because weve got a bit of a surplus here. Now if only there were some mountain Trolls mixed in.
It'd be a waste of a trollheart tbh. You just get a rune that moves something a bit faster can carry a heavier weight but the restrictions listed still apply.
Direction in a Runelords workshop? He could probably direct them all from a master control room or something. Hehe just saying probably not for the Hold but just for his personal base I can see full Mad Scientist control.
You don't know, all current generally accepted theories argue that the Runes will not work that way and will probably be because of the Rule of Three.
Anything stopping us from making Gronti Duraz (and I'm aware that's the highest tier) or any other group of golems now?
Making a Gronti is useful if there's a Runesmith to control it and give it commands.

Youd need four master runes technically as well.

Also note, while most Runesmiths usually feel scummy if okay with spamming normal runes.

no runesmith, and I mean NO runesmith is spamming master runes on the level you're thinking.

hmmm, need a rune of intelligence or something to make one golem smart enough to do everything itself. move, load, aim, fire.

So one Gronti Duraz and a thousand Rune Guardians then. Or does the rule of three apply to individual Golems next to each other?

I mean I would really like to try. We have a Tunelord with the knowledge and a surplus of both qualotybTrollhearts and Gromril.

What would be needed to actually make a Rune with the Heart @soulcake? Is Snorri determined to figure out every possible use of the Greedy One's Heart before he makes something of it? Ergo, study it, then you can make a Rune, but not without?

Gronti are the precursors to Rune Guardians, the latter coming into existence as a collab between runesmiths and the engineers guild because no one alive remembered how to make them anymore. What the old dwarfs could do with just a statue the later runesmiths had to achieve with the mechanisms of the engineers guild for their rune to move and animate.

For the purposes of this quest, the Master Rune of Waking the guardians use is a lesser version of the original Master Rune used on the Gronti (this is the version you have)

Snorri has a good idea about what the heart could do to a rune based on prior evidence and a large body of knowledge, but like any Good Runelord he's going to experiment to see what effect a heart of this magnitude will do to a Rune. Mechanically, you'll be given a rough list of enhanced effects a rune that used this item can do, it isn't exhaustive, but it'll give you a good idea, and even then there may be effects not even Snorri could predict. This thing is unique after all.

All this, done without altering the Rune itself as a runesmith normally would.

The Rune of Impact that you bore on your armour for instance, was a derivative of the original Rune discovered and used on mining tools. You'd put that very rune on many of the picks you enchanted a decade or two ago. But continuing with the point, the Rune of Impact was altered to work on armour according to the principles of the Rule of Form. The art of discovering which alterations made a Rune suitable for inscription is often what many a runesmith would get stuck on. It was honestly a topic you loved teaching and thinking about, but that was for another time.
This seems to sum things up for a lot of runic research. What can you make via altering already existing runes, basically. Not so much discovering a new use for a Rune...I think.

Different problem, making a lot of Golems requires repeating The Master Rune of Waking and crosses the Rune of Pride.

So anyone for putting an order for Stone Troll Blood this turn too? We haven't decided on what Master rune for the Axe so might as well get something for another Rune in the mean time. I wanna get some reserves of stuff. The blood would be for a Daemonward in the future if needed.

Could be something else if needed. Wish we had some Stone Troll parts too. Or some live ones nearby to...appropriate.

Eh, model each golem to the appearance of a different dead dwarf. Call it a memorial and each is different enough to not cross it. Especially with the more lax attitudes to it right now. Unless somebody is saying all dwarfs memorials are identical? Grumble Grumble.

I'm assuming there is a certain danger in runecraft, else it'd be a simple matter of trying out a bajillion tiny edits to preexisting working runes via throwing and seeing what sticks?

Simple runes that's usually what happens, but time and experience let a runesmith narrow it down. Master Runes require a more delicate touch because again, a lot of energy in that there Rune. That and material cost which depending on the Rune, Master Runes especially, can become very costly even for a Runelord.

Any research regarding the Master Runes will require a level of protection that your current facility simply doesn't have. The cost is irrelevant, it is the materials you need that are the true bottleneck. You've got the Gromril and Dragon Blood necessary for the Rune you need now. He trusts you to make an axe worthy of the prospective title Trollslayer and is willing to wait for the product for however long it takes. @BungieONI
Hmm, you know the basics of your idea of harnessing energy for creation mixes well with the Rune of Conduction, which harnesses energy to a point and inputs it (violently) into what it contacts.

I wonder whether we could use the rune of awakening together with some help from the engineers to make a repeating crossbow.
It's a basic enough concept, so probably. Wouldn't require any sort of trigger-based mechanism either to affect the insertion of the next bolt. May not fit with the Dwarfen ideals to throw around ammunition like that, but then again they made the Organ Gun...but also then again, that was probably in response to a lot of enemies with a lot less runic knowledge and no Ancestor Gods around, so...

[X] Plan Rune Metal and starting the workshop

On counter-troll axe the main challenges I see are:
-Troll regeneration
-Troll physique
-Troll acid

The first is a solved problem, kill it with fire.
The second and third against a troll is a problem, a dwarf could handle the physique, but the acid is ungodly dangerous in melee, whether its puked onto you or splashed when you gut it.

So I can see three options:
-Knockback - Blast the troll away on hit, along with the acid, which, if you time it right, would also helpfully kill a second troll with the acid.
-Throwing - If they're dangerous in melee why fight them in melee? Throw a returning axe.
-Freeze - Turn the troll into a popsicle, no acid splash if its been flash frozen in the instant you cleaved it and I reckon regenerating from being popsicle'd is a mite difficult(maybe if you do it right you could use the same rune combo to suck out all the heat from the troll, then apply thermal shock on the cutting edge?)

Parrying, and all that isn't really as useful in narrative compared to tabletop, since good dwarf armor can handle the attacks already, other than the acid, which shouldn't be parryable.

And the narrative should be focused around perseverance or motion, the battle was a chaotic mess, the trolls wouldn't stop coming, the daemons wouldn't stop coming and the dwarves kept going.
Unlike most dwarf battles of hardpoint and attackers, this was a dynamic, shifting battlefield, where the enemy could suddenly be behind your lines, striking at your siege engines and runesmiths, where their numbers could suddenly grow or sorcery strike unless negated.

I don't know if runes could do the options I laid out, but since we're in narrative theres probably some combination which could.
