On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Yes.

Narratively the loss of depth perception is going to be outweighed by his sheer age and skill as a millennial old figure who's been fighting most of his life, compared to the 600 year old warrior for most of their much shorter life.

If we use the combat stats as an argument Snorri would be down to 20 Base Skill + 15 Karugromthi (his age) = +35 vs whatever the 600 year old has to offer. And the 600 year old isn't matching that total unless he's a genuine genius at fighting.
Grimnir desired a champion. :V

imagine spending another 950 years fortifying the Runeversity with even more defenses and runes? imagine how many grontis that can be made by runesmiths and lords that could possibly be donated to function as a standing guard force?

Make it a tradition, every Runesmith/lord that visits the Runeversity gifts a Gronti in remembrance to the Gift Giver.
By the time the next big war kicks off, there will be Gronti legions!

hmmmm, Snorri deciding to enter a discussion in a rune hall about gronti improvements and sharing his evidence of more detailed gronti = better gronti? causing everyone to test it out by making their own grontis? massively boost the gronti population in the world without spending more of our AP? :V

[Negaverse] A Dragon's Day: A Shard Dragon Negaquest, +15 to a Roll
A Dragon's Day: A Shard Dragon Negaquest

Dragons, Drak, Caladh, you are of the blood of beings ancient beyond the dreams of men dwarfs and aye even the elves. You warred with the Firstborn of the Old Ones who came in ships of flame like a rain of silver stars... and you were defeated. Long and bloody was the conflict that drove you from mastery, your kind has born witness to the fall of the Shartak whom the younger races call Dragon Orgres to utter depravity and the willing service of corruption as the skies bled the colors of madness and the works of the Old Ones fell to ruin. Lo in those days of dread when the world's ending balanced upon a blade with hope on one side and nightmare eternal upon the other it came to be that by chance you made pact and fellowship with the...

[] Elves, immortal spellwrights without peer, dwellers upon the floating island yours was a pact of blood and magic before a sorcerer without peer, one whose name would ring though all the ages of the world from this day to the world's ending (Easy Start)

[] Men, on Albion Mist Shrouded and by the Fimir long bedeviled you came into the company of those men who were nearest to their elder teachers, those who in later ages would be called Druids (Normal Start)

[] Dwarfs, stout dwellers under the mountains, keepers of treasures without count, runeforgers, grudge-keepers honorable and proud (Hard Start)

Whence were you found by mortal hands? Are thou elder or babe unborn, did you see with waking eyes the World that Was or is it but a dream felt in your bones?

[] A Lost Egg, by chance or mischance perhaps you have been found to be raised in by one of the Children of the Old Ones, much might you learn of their ways, their craft and their cunning, but of the world you will know only what they tell you and of the ways of Dragons nothing but the song of Blood

[] A Young Drake, just freed of the nest the time has come for you to find a lair of your own, a task which comes with broadening horizons and growing cunning hunger does, if not lessen than at least make room for more abstract desires: covetousness, courage, curiosity.

[] An Elder, you are older than the fleeting seasons than the path the sun makes across the sky, you recall the age of storm and frost, of the earth's blood flowing, looking upon a world made foreign you hate the interloper... though perhaps not their creations. Tools they had been forged to be, weapons in the hands of their masters yet now abandoned in the face of the Last of All Wars

Canon Ulthuan is Elves and Elder I'm pretty sure, we should be able to do better than them. Just have to eat Maleketh and the world can be at peace.

7Gremlins said:
Yeah, all we have to do is stay awake. Seriously with the emphasis on how foreign the world is to us we should focus on maximizing our integration without new allies. Egg would work best for that I think. Maybe start with humans, we are a dragon, we can take medium difficulty.

Bright as Gold said:
We could take naps longer than a human lifespan

[O] A Young Drake
[O] Elves

This way we won't be grumbling about the good old days all the time and getting on the elves nerves

You know that gives me an idea... why not do dwarfs?

[O] An Egg

ParadoxDrake said:
Dwarfs live in mountains and hoard treasures, dragons live in mountains and hoard treasures , we fill the same ecological niche, bad idea. Plus even if we could pull it off, can you imagine a dwarf flying? They wouldn't be able to take advantage of one of our biggest boons.

CakeForTheSoul said:
If you guys go dwarf I'd make it a shard dragon.

ParadoxDrake said:
The ones they enslaved with Runic collars? Bad Idea, really bad idea! If you do not like the idea of elves at least do humans.

MrHalfling said:
Dwarfs and Dragons collaborated fine during the Golden Age, they only went to war because dwarfs and elves went to war, but we wouldn't be playing an elf dragon.

Bright as Gold said:
What kind of crazy dwarf would want to raise a dragon anyway?

CakeForTheSoul said:
Oh I have ideas... Hint, it's in the name.

OK, now we have to do it, just to see what the madlad looks like.

OOC: This is my first time trying a negaverse, hope you guys enjoy.

I think we can replace one of the tags (maybe "This is not a vampire quest" or "this is not an empire quest") with "Judgement withheld pending results"

[X] [Name:] Write-in. No more than 3, preferably 2, syllables.
- [X] Smaug, The left hatchling with beaten Gromril spines and copper flecked eyes.
- [X] Ancalagon, The middle hatchling, with some spines that look as if they were subjected to flames.
- [X] Glaurung, The right hatchling, larger than its siblings with shifting eyes.

I sort of suspect that lesser universities of magic exist in Ulthuan but they all sort of look like community colleges compared to the White Tower/Saphethion.
It occurs to me that we do kind of know of one in canon: The Anvil of Vaul. I mean it's not traditional wizardy aesthetics and all, but like, they are learning to use magic, just to build instead of blowing shit up.

The first proper post, where they presumably hatch, would be really interesting here. With no context Snorri looks wild. Unusually tall for a dwarf, streaks of silver in otherwise white beard, a glowing prosthetic eye, a right hand that's mostly scarring and of course the plain willingness to hatch dragon eggs.

"Oh my god, we've been hatched by a dwarf super villain."

The height wouldn't come up for a dragon because how tall are dwarfs supposed to be anyhow, to a newborn dragon, the eye might come up, and the scarring would be invisible under the beard and armor. What would be weird and out of place is that the dragons like Karstah more, we are likely intimidating. Makes sense, on one hand, we constantly drink deeply of magic of the world via barak azamar, but at the same time, we kill any momentum ambient winds around us have. That would probably throw people in for a loop.

Also, we are scale-less bipeds, which like, wtf.

That was said in response to the negaverse post, he was talking about the questors PoV.

The dragons themselves don't even have context to know if being scale-less bipeds is unusual or not. They know 2 scaled, 3 not, and haven't seen a mirror yet.

Well, yes, but questers can only react to what the dragons would describe, so shrug.

They are especially magic sensitive dragons so it would most likely be something about a weird metal encased upright biped with shining eye that happens to be a yawning abyss of magic, simultaneously devouring that from the below to churn out power to give out to above, while making it dead still. Then it meets two more, who are thankfully lot less confusing and don't make the lifeblood they need to live quite so weird.

Just had an odd thought and it might be Snori levels of Odd. I was dong a reread and at one point @Alratan theorized that Deep Magic was a Ninth Wind, one that falls straight down when it comes out of the Polar gates. But how do we know it's just one of them?

Deep Magic has been described as 'the Oldest Magics, the Oldest Forces', plural both times. Now the Dragon rolls were: Stone Fire, Winds and Truth. Winds we can dismiss I think since it is the normal Winds 'Ethereal as the Winds' was the term, but Stone, Fire and Truth are Odd since remember these dragons need to eat a kind of magic, it was part of the ritual done on them. I do not think there would be actual runic power down there, not given that we did not strike any runes as the eggs were consuming the magic and I do not think the Primordial Fires at the heart of the world are merely the Red Wind especially as Winds plural is a different category.

I think there are 2-3 types of magic down there that we cannot parse out because the only people to interact with them so far are Runesmiths who are blind to magic, but it would be interesting to point an elf mage at a gontri and ask them what they think of the power animating the stone.

Man imagine all this drama about easy underway connections being for naught as a century down the line as our kids just carve out massive highways in a span of months

Maybe, or maybe they'd consider the tunnels insufficient without quite a bit of surveying. The below quote is from Divided Loyalties, not Rhunrikki, but I'd bet it's damn close to how Golden Age Dawi saw it as well.

Starting from the Black Water is a tunnel being dug through the mountains in the same way it has always been, as for all their insight and technology, to Dwarves there is exactly one correct way to dig a tunnel, and that is the way that Grungni did it. Sure, there are vast ventilation pumps bringing fresh air in, and steam vehicles on rails taking away dirt and rubble, but at the very front of the tunnel is a series of wooden scaffolds to allow what looks like an entire Mining Clan at once to bring their picks to bear on the solid rock of the mountain. Occassional side-branches are being dug to pursue interesting veins and deposits that were uncovered by chance, carefully watched over by Lodewardens in case they break through into unexpected tunnels.

Defense in depth. We need to develop college compounds that are each individually fortified as part of the whole. Let's see; College of Alchemy, College of Prosthetics, College of Alloys, College of Gronti. Seems like there are plenty of options.

Of course that is only one way of dividing things up. We could order things by the aim and methods preferred. School of Pride (for those who apply the rules strictly), School of Durin (for those who prioritise the quest for understanding), School of Valaya (for those who see looking after the people to most important). Acknowledging and accepting the many individual paths of Runesmithing.

In fact is it better to link each one to an Ancestor? As these groups are natural divisions, we want to anticipate the potential for grudges and reduce the problem. The potential problem with Colleges of Alchemy and Prosthetics is that dwarves may be tempted to focus on only one in the pursuit of mastery rather than combining multiple for prosthetics built out of weird new alloys.

Yesterday, the defences were marvellous. Today they are the standard that must be use for a runesmith building but tomorrow, they will be lacking because new runes or new technologies will be discovered.
