Homura looks askance at you, expression tightening, and you can guess at her thoughts - she's not a hero, she's a failure, and... Wonder of wonders, you watch her swallow those thoughts, violet eyes hooded by her brows but nevertheless relaxing by the tiniest fraction.

Hahahaha AHAHAHAHAHAHA omg this is enormous. This is why I wrote this in here.

"I'm not a hero, I'm a -- wait."

"... If what she's saying is true. Then..."

Are we ever going to discuss the potential problem of the orientation of Homura's hourglass? Because even if that turns out to be nothing, Homura deserves to know that piece of information.

Seriously, while I do understand that it's important for her to learn how to socialize, if only to manipulate her friends in a future loop in the case we fail, the position of that Hourglass has far more terrifying, and immediately relevant implications.

We could put it in as a last minute thing if the thread is willing.

What Red said.

I'd like to sit on it for another 2-3 days IC and see how much Homura stabilizes, both from what we just did and anything further we may do. We have that long. Homura's behavior in Rebellion suggests an extreme tendency to dig at this kind of mystery. Some Very Interesting Things could result, in the negative sense. I want counterbalances to anything of that sort.

In particular, I'd settle for Sayaka being loopbombed or major indications of Homura's status improving.

The good thing about next week is we have far less of a planned schedule for most of it.

Also I was think about how everyone's anime hair is probably caused by a wish and it reminded me that Madokami said she could only save Sayaka from dying if she reversed her wish. This means that because everyone still has anime hair in Wraithverse the magical girl who wished for rainbow hair was super down with selling her soul for it.

(There are other explanations I suppose but those are less funny.)

So apparently, if you have covid - like symptoms, and then you go to a doctors appointment, they will then make you have that appointment over voice call, thus making physical measurements impossible, and just telling me stuff about how I should go about life using 3 month old data, then make you eat that $20 copay for it.

Welcome to America.

(no I don't know If I have it)

So what madness has occurred while I was in my muscle fatigue induced haze?

Is Mami anywhere near being ready to be witchbombed?
*echoing forth from the darkness, where the lurkers lie*

Judging from this update? MAYBE! Which is quite the step up from where she used to be!

Have you considered the Archery Club, where she has old friends whose lives AREN'T caught up in a life and death struggle against doom and despair? It seems very wholesome!

There's a ceiling on how effective a social group can be if you're hiding a major part of your life from them.

And yes, we have considered it. We've mentioned the possibility, and that's really all we should be doing here. She'll make her own decision, or more likely already has.
"Well," you say, squeezing Mami's hand again. "You never know how things can change, right? If you want to pick it up again, Mami, you have the time now, I think."

Mami sighs. "Maybe, but... I'm not sure I will," she says, giving you a small, melancholy smile.

"Hey," you say. "I... if you want to, the option's there, Mami. You can if you want to."

She smiles, and in lieu of answering, picks up her spoon to scoop up some ice cream.

So is it possible that Mami might manage to figure out the witchbomb by herself? She certainly isn't dumb and completely distrusts Kyubey now, so could she just piece together the truth?

Laying aside the longer explanation I'm down to tackle the witchbomb with Mami any day we can find the time IC now.

Honestly, it may be less a witchbomb and more a "So here's all the implications and surrounding information you should be aware of in order to be able to account for reality and support our friends properly, if you want the specific details of the horrific shit that happens when a gem fills I am up to explain at any time you please, just know that it's reversible and I'm working on it."

Wait

Wait are we doing this?

Holy shit we're doing this.

I'd scream but my throat hurts too bad.

Big edit to previous post, see above.

Mami trusts us completely and being able to kind of just crack the witchbomb into two parts -- the actual details as half, the messy implications as the other -- goes a long way to making it easier to shoulder imo. A lot less has to be piled on at once.

So basically, after the crisis that is sure to pop up while we're meeting with Tokyo, providing the Soujos aren't a threat immediately afterwards. :V

It's something that's been dangling over our heads for quite some time. We've helped Mami confirm that she's not alone (without any instances of her head being chopped off, too!) We've built her up quite a lot from how she started out when we first woke up in the alley. And let's face it, better she learns it from us than from Kyuubey, because Mister Manipulative would spin it in a way guaranteed to make her Witch Out.

Eh.

I'm viewing it as non-urgent atm, and on top of that I don't think it requires more than one update, two if Mami decides she wants the full details.

On top of that, we could legitimately sit on the details half until the end of time if we do the implications half right and Mami doesn't feel like hearing the rest. As long as Mami knows all the relevant stuff surrounding the witchbomb, all its links to the rest of reality, there's no particular reason she'd *have* to learn the actual details that meguca turn into witches.

On top of that, frankly, Mami is a goddamn fighter and my overall expectation for the witchbomb is that it will underwhelm a lot of people. The key words that have to come out of our mouth are "... And we're going to fix all of this shit, too."

I do not believe you are correct in estimating a minimal affect on Mami. The witchbomb itself directly undermines a great deal of the foundation of her psychological defenses.

Furthermore, I will say that we really, really, really do not want to try to witchbomb Mami right now, since we've just gotten through a conversation that includes a hell of a lot of existentially terrifying subtext for anyone who doesn't have the specifically fucked-up "external to their own life" psychological perspective that Sabrina brings to the table.

There's also the other issue that we can't just openly declare to being the rat's enemy, as it's possibly, probably, a Kardashev Type V civilization and fighting it without some kind of Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann-style power up, as Homura did in the timeline we don't want to happen, is an exercise in futility. But we have time to deal with the rat; getting Homura and Mami into better head spaces and teaching them proper information hygiene is more important.

This, on the other hand, might be a good sentiment to express to Kyubey if and when we reach the point where we're in a position to negotiate with it. It's important to keep in mind that, while it is currently acting evil, Kyubey isn't really committed to being evil, or really even cognizant that its actions are evil. It has no emotions, no empathy, and when it harms others it doesn't understand the pain that it causes because it can't. And so, while we need to fight against it for now, we should also keep in mind that if we can present magic as a better alternative to grief collection to its goal of entropy reduction then it will suddenly become a very strong ally.
Right now, we can only talk our way out of trouble. An actual safe solution will only exist when we have an advantage that the Incubator understands, and cannot evade.
This is not hopeless, even a little bit.
Kyuubey enjoys the privileges a Type 4 ~ish advanced civilization - and embodies a dead end for the hopes that were entrusted to it. Paradox?

For you see,the problem of Entropy has already been solved. Simply become God-tier, and remake reality. This is something humans achieve, but Incubators do not. Unless Kyuubey already knows, and is seeing how long it can keep going as before without setting off the moe godlings it has enabled. We will have some fancy negotiation during the mid-game, but ultimately Team Earth Magi are going to own this segment.

It is definitely true, we need to keep pace with our Social success, by doing more research and practice. Re-writing the isolation of Magical Girls is not best among salvations we could offer, without breaking the rest of the system.

We need to fill in our gaps for combative ability, including telepathy, so we resist getting limited or killed before we finish here. Big moves, little moves, fun cantrips, all are likely to make things go our way.

We need to experience unprecedented magical ability with others, so we can meet our supernatural goals both now, and as a legacy. Grief isn't going to move itself.

We need to understand and practice more of the Theory behind (or beyond) magic, such as Hope. It is likely our ace card, and needs to be leveled up for the final resolution. If we were to determine, for instance and not at all prescribing, that we are trapped in Gretchen's Lotus Eater reality... Do we or do we not want to understand emotions/magic better than her?

@SaltyWaffles , I see the same things with a "funny accent."

#######

To unlock our next level of Infosec to Mami, I wish to have "overflowing support." We are building this up, but we don't have easy deployment yet. First we need as many girls in the Know as possible to be even closer to Mami. Second, finish the reinstatement of Kyouko and see her comfortable and stable with the group.
Naturally, we need to break the system a bit! If we could gain for her a surrogate parent in any capacity, that would be strong. Help more refugees, and meet more teams. Fill her horizons with Life.
We can go further!
There's a ceiling on how effective a social group can be if you're hiding a major part of your life from them.
In a Masquerade, true. We can make the effort to deliver actual non-Magi peers to her as well. Actual, as in "possessing relevant cultural and common sense knowledge that matches." In other words, make the Archery Club the prototypes of our new world, where Magi are understood by everyone. Then they can choose to be part of her friend circle, and it would be honest. If they don't she needs more friends, and that can happen.
We can (and should) go even further!
By gaining much greater de-witching progress, healing will be assured. Then we can have an answer to her horror, very nearly a cure.
Overall, we should not need to rush. As Kai said, I think she will not die as we are now. But I want the better outcome, one that leaves fewer scars.

#######

I suppose we need to work the wire before bed - IRC, both our established contacts ("When do you guys want to visit?") and maybe a new one. We should also open any choice of social media accounts, to have it on the back burner for future exploits. Who do we need to talk to on Telepathy?

#######

Let's make plans for the "next" occasion we have a productive session with Madoka? If we started further un-bundling her issues, it would take a load off of Homura, while also improving what she could do as part of the team. So first, list her issues?

You're strawmanning unintentionally because you didn't read the chain of posts. I just got done saying we shouldn't be doing it right now. There's no need for this.

Secondly, I don't think you are reading what I am writing if you are so damn sure that what I'm writing is the witchbomb.

[x] Hug Mami, and head home.
-[x] Invite Homura to spend the night if she wants to.

[x] Poke Kyouko and Sayaka, see how they're doing, let them know you want to hang out with them and do a big hunt on Monday.

[x] Before you sleep:
-[x] Double check if you have enough mind protection enchantments for everyone for tomorrow.
-[x] Confirm Grief Seed clearing with Ishinomaki for the morning.
--[x] Mention that if Yuuki is interested, you'd like to set up some longer term agreement to pay her for her services in the future.
-[x] Check with the University Group about the Tome group.
-[x] Book a restaurant for dinner with Mami tomorrow.

Ah, I guess this is relevant now. It's entirely possible we're not going to be faced with mind control or memory wipes when we go into Tyoko tomorrow, but something much more dangerous: The Divine Right of Kings, or as eastern cultures know it, the The Mandate of Heaven. I read a story once where the rightful queen of the fantasy world the hero was trying to restore to the throne was the rightful queen because whenever she made a public decision it was always the correct one. No one else could ever make a better choice than her in matters of public business, even if privately she could still screw up.

If What's-her-name wished to have her own kingdom, that could very well translate into an ability like this, one that makes her always right or at least appear to be always right, and I'm not certain our amulets would protect against that. My first instinct is to use a grief clone in our stead so we're not under her direct influence, but if she detects it it would probably be taken as an insult.

Then again, if in matters of state she literally always makes the objectively right choice... there is no protecting against the truth.

On that very thought, I think we should try to doge mind whammys as hard as possible, as a truly true mandate of heaven type situation will always appear compelling, no matter how many steps removed, shall always shine true.

OOOOooookay.

Uh.

My main point here is that I'd rather not --

*Snaps fingers* THAT Yuuki.

There are threemany Yukis in this quest dammit.

Yeah, okay, sure. Seems legit. Yeah... Yeah! Ok.
