Upon further thought, Ugo has a damn good point in meeting Sendai first, they are currently the winning side of the conflict and projected to drive University group out in a few hours time. Perhaps meeting them first and getting them to back down is the way to go, afterwards going to University group to sort things out. This is depending on Sendai not doing something unforgivable to University group to initiate the conflict. Though perhaps we just talk to whichever side we find first upon reaching Sendai?

Also, I like Phantom's addition better than mine.

[x] Exchange contact details with the Ishinomaki group i.e. cell phones numbers, emails etc, ask for University group's contact details.
[x]Ask Ishinomaki if they can contact the University Group and convince them to back off from the conflict and/or to organise a meeting with us.
-[x] if University Group does back off, let Sendai know that we got University Group to stand down for now, so no picking fights with them for a while, OK?
[x] Last question: Ask the Ishinomaki group why Sendai would want to take over their city (at least that was what Sendai told us). Is there something Akiko wants? After all, Mitakihara is pretty much in between Sendai and Ishinomaki and until recently, much less well-defended. (Frame it as self-interest), wouldn't it be more logical to come after us? Or is "two years worth of skirmishes" all over Kato Setsuko?
[x] Muramasa's vote.
- [x] I think we're pretty much done here. Thanks for the information.
- [x] Goodbye for now. Maybe with a little luck, we can get things to settle down in a day or two.
- [x] Wings to grief carpet. Time to leave. Next stop: Sendai
- [x] Heal injuries.
- [x] Fangirl Mami on her absolutely amazing fight, and don't leave Kirika out.
- [x] Update Homura, via telepathy.
- [x] Check if Mami can telepathy with Kato
[x] When we arrive at Sendai open communications with whichever group we meet first.

It occurs to me that we have been treating telepathy as long range when in the show they needed to go fetch mami physically instead of telepathing her when they found Charlotte's seed because they didn't know her phone number.

Probably too late to change things though.

Considering Kyouko contacting Madoka from like forever away and similar incidents in Kazumi Magica and the PSP game the range is probably pretty wide, but telepathy is implied to work differently for Magical Girls and potentials and this might be one of them.

Also Urobuchi doesn't think about the mechanics of the supernatural elements in his writing very much and I'll be damned if anyone's going to take away the one non-deceitful, non-sketchy use telepathy has in these quests goddamn.

Which sounds to me like they were recruited to spring an ambush from the beginning, but in the latest post they seem to contradict this and say:

Which sounds more like they were legitimately going to meet with her for some reason, then saw her early and decided to attack first on the basis that she was being suspicious.
Not a mistake, no, but now that I look at it, the way I phrased it isn't terribly clear, so I believe I'll clarify this bit, so, free info:

The timeline is as such: The University group contacts the Ishinomaki group, asks them for an alliance. They agree, but no concrete plans are made yet. When Akiko asks to talk, they also agree, decide to be the bigger person etc, etc, because [nope, not that generous]. When they find Akiko there early, though, they assume the worse (that Akiko's found about their alliance and stuff), and holler to the University group, and attack. This is why things kick off early and all that.

Incidentally, there's a relatively big hint, well, hinted at in there if you can find it.

"-I mean, we'll be in trouble if we don't take 'em down quick. Uh, I think it's a pretty good plan - we should be able to pull it off this time... what d'you think, Yuuki, can you give me a number crunch real quick?"
"Uhh, give me a sec ... I'm coming up with 32.33-repeating, of course, percentage of survival."
"...well it's a lot better than we usually do."
"Wait, what- HOLY SHIT, IT'S HAMASAKI!"
"What the hell's she doing here so early?"
"You think she knows?"
"Ohshitohshitohshit-"
"-SHUT UP! Look, we're OK, we just need to-"
"Time's up, let's do this!"
Four became six.
"LEEEEEROOOOOY! JEEEENKINSSSSsssssss!"
"HOLY SH-"
Three girls froze for a moment in abject shock.
"Oh my god, she just ran in..."
"Save her!"
"Oh jeez."
"Stick to the plan! GO GO GO!"
This is why things kick off early and all that.
*Demented laughter intensifies* This is what happened, and no-one's gonna convince me otherwise.

Thoughts: We've known Akiko is sketchy as hell for a while, but let's not forget that these girls aren't angels either. They may have a good reason for having attacked both us and the Sendai girls now, but their doubts when it comes to their meeting witk Kato:
"We... well, I think we were nice to her.
leads me to believe that "attack first, ask later" may very much be their normal behavior when meeting someone new.
"Sooooooo it sounds like you guys attacked first?" Kirika pipes up, grin exposing her fang.

Yuuki's face hardens. "We did," she says. "If you were where we are, you would too."
They likely have no problems rationalizing that policy.

Going by the current vote, it seems we're not coming clean on how much we've helped Sendai so far. I guess hoping the situation doesn't come up is a legitimate tactic, but this is likely our only chance to reveal it and make amends on our own terms. By help, I mean cleansing their grief seeds and tipping them off about Tohoku, which may get Sendai to attack them before we reach them.

"Whatever. Point is, we asked if she wanted to stay. She didn't, we let her hunt a Witch, and pass through," Aki says.
"Actually..." Kimiko says slowly. "You remember when we were asking if she wanted to join us?"

Aki shrugs again. "Nope. You just remember 'cuz she was pretty, don't you?"
Mmm... Possible contradiction?

@Cannongerbil
"Hey, Nakano," Yuuki's voice sounds in your head. "Did you need healing?"
Seems there's one more to add to your list.

Er, Ender, I think you might have misread the situation. Akiko wants this war, for some inexplicable reason, so telling them that the university group pulled back isn't going to stop her from attacking them. Hell, even if Akiko wasn't spoiling for a fight, the fact that the university group fired the first shot makes them perfectly justified in their retaliation. We're not going to get them to stop attacking just by telling them that the University group are willing to stand down. If anything, it will just paint a big target over their heads.

Thing we need to find out, in no particular order:
  • Who the hell is Kato Setsuko, why did she leave the Sendai group in the first place, and why is Akiko so focused on her?
  • What were the Sendai group actually doing in the city?
  • How much does Rin know? For that matter, how much do the rest of the Sendai group know?
  • What is Akiko's obsession with Ishinomaki? What, exactly, could be motivating her to attempt repeated territory grabs over the years?
Expect a Information list update soon.

Show me the proof that Akiko wants the war. All I've seen so far is speculation, so I'm willing to keep an open mind. There is not enough information to make a good judgement. In our conversation with she seemed to give Sabrina permission to find some way to end the war. Sure she could be lying but lets wait until we have proof before acting hastily. We mustn't let our negative bias against her cloud our judgement and replace facts with assumptions.
  • Who the hell is Kato Setsuko, why did she leave the Sendai group in the first place, and why is Akiko so focused on her?
Bluntly speaking I don't think Kato Setsuko is all that important. Yeah talking to her would be nice, but unless it reveals some Tokyo Six style activities about old Sendai I don't see whats the point. She's old news. Sure it'd fill in some holes but I don't think it will matter much. Also the evidence on Akiko focusing on her is... sketchy at best, all we have is Ishinomaki's account which is missing some things. Which is why I asked in my vote if there was anything else they were fighting over. Akiko said they're been constantly skirmishing over two years, Ishinomaki haven't given us much reason why apart from something vague about Setsuko, we need to press them more on it.

All good questions that need to be answered. Though I think point 4 overrides the 1st one. Akiko supposedly focusing on Setsuko could be a red herring covering for something else.

...Why were they afraid? Why did the Ishinomaki girls panic when they saw Akiko early?

The secret alliance? No, not a valid reason. Correct me if I'm wrong, but at that point in the conflict, the Sendai girls haven't called favors and reinforcements yet. The Ishinomaki girls have a significant advantage over Akiko, why should they give two fucks if Akiko found out earlier?

No, I think they panicked because Akiko arrived too early,... or she was about to stumble on to something or someone that Ishinomaki is hiding aside from the alliance. That's possibly the thing that made Akiko really want this war.

That said, on poking witch cores(missed the discussion earlier), what if we set up a grief extraction process and keep it running in the background while we science it? Sure we gain a spike of corruption, but that's why we just need to have it removed as fast as it builds.

I fully endorse this. When are we doing this?

Well, problem #1 is that we have not done anything that even resembles setting up any kind of process to "run in the background".

Doing that would be totally awesome for a wide variety of reasons, even more so if we can find some way to do it outside our range (we were going to have Mami show us how to enchant items, right?) since then we can turn it into a better post-scarcity solution than shipping grief seeds around. But we need to not get ahead of ourselves.

Whatever we did to compress our Grief Marbles persists without constant effort. Our music might also be applicable, but that could just be Sabrina being really good at dividing her attention and multitasking.

There is no concrete proof, per say, but Akiko's behaviour so far has not been that of someone wanting to avoid war. For instance, see this snippet:
A flash of... something flits across Akiko's face. Interest, maybe, or satisfaction. "That's... certainly interesting," she allows. ""
This is in response to us telling her that the University group organized the whole affair. It certainly implies that Akiko is not adverse to fighting a war, and may even be hoping for an excuse to move on the university group. Why she needs an excuse, I'm less certain, though I have a niggling suspicion it has something to do with the Sakura-Akiko conflict we caught wind off.

At any rate, we know for a fact that Akiko is not adverse to the idea of a war between them and the university group. The question is whether Akiko actively wants a war, or if she simply not opposed to it.
Bluntly speaking I don't think Kato Setsuko is all that important. Yeah talking to her would be nice, but unless it reveals some Tokyo Six style activities about old Sendai I don't see whats the point.
She is important enough for Akiko to use as a reason for starting the war, and it's certainly important enough for her to keep attacking even after being repulsed multiple times. Insert failbaddon joke here

I want to know if she genuinely cares about her or if she is just using her death as a convenient excuse to stage a territory grab, because that determines the approach we take when dealing with her.

Do you mean poking grief cores while siphoning the grief? Because we've done that. Too dangerous.

Do you mean something else?

Sabrina could run 30+ trains of thought at once, I bet. The problem is when they crash...

Yay, no more exams for Firn!

Have this pic as a present:

This is in no way related to my hate for exams.

Stop looking at me like that.

Information list update. Major update this time. Huge sections have basically been rewritten outright.

Sendai Coalition:
  1. Sendai group: 5 members. This is the only group which we have made direct contact with prior to this incident. The Sendai crew appear to be at the centre of this mess, and both the university group and the Ishinomaki group hold a grudge against them, the Ishinomaki group due to being repeatedly attacked by them and the University group due to long-term oppression.

The reason given for the Sendai group's repeated attacks is due to them wanting to take revenge for Setsuko's death, whom they say was killed by the Ishinomaki group. Whether they actually believe that or if they are just using her death as a convenient excuse to start a war remains to be seen. At the very least, the reason they want to take out the ishinomaki group is important enough that they are willing to try again after being repelled on multiple occasions.

They also provided the motivation for the University group starting this war by oppressing them and demanding tribute. If we want to end this war peacefully, this needs to be addressed.

Previous interactions between Akiko and Sakura shows that there may be some disagreements between the two of them, the nature of which is currently unknown. Keep this in mind in our future interactions.
    Known members:
    • Hamasaki Akiko: Water powers. The apparent leader of the group. Mercenary in disposition, and definitely hiding something from us. Has something of a hateful reputation amongst the Ishinomaki group, to the point that just by seeing her sulking around is enough to conclude that she is trying to set up an ambush.
    • Tachibana Sakura: Teleporter. Uses a katana. Capable of warping between space instantly, but has a noticable charge up time before each teleport that increases the longer the teleport is meant to go. Abrasive and fiercely protective of Rin.
    • Mori Rin: Dedicated Healer. Wilds a jagged dagger. Is powerful enough to heal Masami from half a torso in mere minutes with comparatively low corruption cost. Newest member of the Sendai group, but definitely no stranger to the darker sides of meguca life. May have been mislead by the older members of the group, and almost certainly does not know the full story behind Kato Setsuko
    • Tanaka Tamiko: Forcefields. Unmet. Disposition unknown.
    • Minami Yumi: Gravity Manipulator. Unmet. Disposition unknown.
      Former members:
    • Kato Setsuko: Unknown. We don't really know much about her, except that she left the Sendai group two years ago after an internal struggle. She is the stated reason for why the Sendai group attacked the Ishinomaki group.
  2. Fukushima Group: ??? members. Allies of the Sendai group, Called in by Akiko as back-up once she realized that she is outnumbered. Will arrive in Sendai shortly, if not already there, and will most likely take part in further operations against the university group. Capabilities unknown

Ishinomaki Alliance:
  1. Ishinomaki Group: 7 members. Was approached by the university group to help in their attack against the Sendai group, and is willing to go along with it due to their past run ins with the Sendai group, and Akiko in particular.

Had contact with Setsuko shortly before her supposed death, and has gotten into multiple skirmishes with the Sendai group due to being blamed for her death. They have managed to remain in control and mostly intact even after a long running low intensity war, and seem to be mostly reasonable, if a little trigger happy.

    Known members:
    • Inoue Yuuna: Concrete Body. She fight by covering herself with a thick armour made out of concrete, which provides a very potent defence against physical attacks without hampering her mobility. She also presumably has access to general earth powers.
    • Koizumi Aki: Clonemaker with Halberd/Short sword. She can create at minimum two clones and dismiss or replace them at will. Attacking the clones directly is pretty much worthless except as a gambit to fill her gem with corruption. One of the older members of the group.
    • Sato Kimiko: Lightning. Can make lightning attacks from extreme range with very little advanced warning. This makes her very good at alpha striking and artillery support, but she is significantly less effective in a chaotic melee. One of the older members of the group.
    • Tsukada Hoshiko: Repulsor aura. Her powers apparently allows her to create kinetic energy blasts on contact. More information is required to determine her exact capabilities. Has a severe phobia of being restrained
    • Inoue Yuuki: Lady Pixels: This girl's powerset is interesting. We didn't get to see much of it in the scuffle due to her getting Mami'd, but it looks like she can create pixelated versions of items and control them at will. More information is required to determine her exact powers, but if so her powers are essentially grief bending lite, only with magic instead of grief.
    • Ueda Miyako: Unknown. Disposition mostly unassuming, other details unknown.
    • Kagome Ayaka: Unknown. Seems to have a history with Mami and almost definitely is a former student of hers, and still seems to harbour some concern for her, despite their differences. One of the older members of the Ishinomaki group.
  2. The Tohoku University Group, AKA the second Sendai group: six 4 Members. Mami knows of these guys before. Allies of the Ishinomaki group. According to Mami, they have been planning an attack on the Sendai group since the previous year.

Previously assumed to have 6 members, they presently only have 4, one of them having left, and the other one "died". Amongst those missing is Ayano Chika, which is one of the girls who've met with Mami previously. The member that left is possibly the the Member currently in the Tome city group.

The reasons for them starting this war seems to stem from systemic oppression by the Sendai group, having their hunting grounds limited and being forced to pay tribute. It's likely that the member who died witched out from a lack of grief seeds, which is what galvanized them into starting this war. In that is the case, convincing them to let go of their grudge is going to be significantly harder.
    Known members and powersets:
    • Invisibility: ???
    • Flight: ???
    • Plant control: ???
    • Tsubaki Chouko: Was the member that met with the Ishinomaki group and convinced them to join in on the ganking.
    • Suzuki Rei:???
    • Suzuki Haru:???
    • Ayano Chika Killed or left. In any case she isn't part of this group anymore.
    • Umeko Yuko: Met with Mami along with Ayano Chika the previous year in an attempt to recruit her to their cause, but failed in the attempt.
Groups that are not currently involved:

  • Onegawa Group: ??? members. Future members of the Sendai Coalition. Capabilities unknown.
  • Tokyo Group: ??? members. Future members of the Sendai Coalition, second to join up. Capabilities unknown.
  • Osaki Group: At least 3 members. Future members of the Ishinomaki Alliance, will join the party in 7 hours, assuming nothing changes in the interim. Known Capabilities
    • Empath: ???
    • Healer: ???
    • Reinforcment/Acclerator/Enchanter/Superstrength?: ???
  • Tome City Group: ??? members. One of their members used to be part of the Tohoku University group, but left for whatever reason. They have a grudge against one of the parties involved in this war, most likely the Sendai Group. Will join the war on the side of the Ishinomaki Alliance in the near future. Capabilities unknown.

Additional notes:
Escalation in <7 hours.

Rampant speculation time: I think I may have stumbled upon a possible reason for Sakura's strange behaviour. For some reason or the other, Akiko wants to wipe out the University group, but the other members within the Sendai group won't support unprovoked murder. Hence, she resorts to treating the university group like shit, in the hopes of causing them to make the first move and thus finally provide a justifiable reason to wipe them out. Sakura knows and disapproves of this, but is unable to override Akiko's policy.

According to Oriko, this entire war started because of something we did during the Masami incident, though we still don't know the exact chain of events that starts with "Sabrina intervening" and ends with "22 meguca pile up"

As of this point, only half of the 8 groups are involved in the fighting. The possibility of us stopping the war before they are called in is still reasonably high.

First casualty in three days time.

This one took way longer than expected to get up, and certain parts of it are done under sleep deprivation, so I'm reasonably certain that mistakes have been made. feel free to point them out, I'll edit them when I'm able.

I think it's Ayaka that's known Mami beforehand.
The last two members soon arrive, bounding over the rooftops to join the group already here - one in a dress absolutely festooned with ribbons, with a long, orange braid of hair flapping after her.

The other's in a far more sedate costume of blacks and greys, one vaguely similar to Kyouko's - predominantly white, trimmed out with in black, and open in the front to reveal a white shirt and skirt combination, and a grey scarf wound around her neck. A large round hat, with a small ribbon sticking out of it, sits atop a neat bob of black hair.

You let the cloud of Grief drift free of their path of approach, and they do so, eyeing it warily. The one in black seems to recognize Mami, eyes widening in surprise. Mami's gaze similarly shifts over, and surprise mirrors itself on her face, too, before it shifts through regret to settle on a harder, wary look.

-

Mami edges closer to you, chin tilting up as she focuses on Miss Ribbons, Miyako. Her hand touches lightly against your elbow. You can feel Ayaka's eyes lingering on that.

Has this been pointed out yet? Both groups claim it's the other one who called the meeting, at least I think Akiko is implying that Ishinomaki called for it.
"So how does a negotiation and a healing turn into a fight?" you press.

"They claimed to be suing for a truce, but attacked me when I got there," Akiko says, as if it's the most obvious thing in the world, her lips curling into a scowl. "During the negotiations... which were presumably a feint."
Yuuki's lip curls. "I dunno. She called for a meeting, right, so I figured we should be the bigger person and agree. But then when we find her here early, skulking about and her two friends also skulking about... Like, wouldn't be the first time she's set up an ambush," she says, frowning.
In a way, this would be a point in Akiko's favor, since while she did take Rin and Sakura with her, they weren't together at the meeting, and Sakura couldn't even teleport to Akiko, so either Akiko didn't plan an ambush or her plan sucked balls.

Of course, Akiko is also the one that's trying to get Mitakihara involved and generally seems to want to scalate the situation as much as possible, so this may just be an excuse to call in favours, or some other silly gambit.

New idea: Kato is a shapeshifter and is playing both sides. It was her that called the meeting on both groups, using the other side's voice! :p

Well, problem #1 is that we have not done anything that even resembles setting up any kind of process to "run in the background".
