Puella Magi Adfligo Systema - Story only

"Who else is involved, besides th-" Oriko holds up a hand, forestalling your question.

The seer takes a deep breath, eyes remaining shut. You can see her eyes twitching under her eyelids, shuttling back and forth as she watches something that isn't there. "Nineteen... twenty... twenty-two magical girls currently involved, as of five minutes in the future," she mutters, voice strained. On the table, her Soul Gem continues to seethe with Grief, though you easily keep up with it.

"Ishinomaki, Sendai... Fukushima? A group from... Tome City," Oriko frowns, head tilting back. "...Fighting in Sendai. A group flying in. Tokyo. Osaki. Two groups from Sendai?"

As Oriko's litany goes on, the blood slowly drains out of Mami's face. "The University group?" Mami asks, her hand clutching yours with icy cold fingers.

Oriko's frown deepens. "Possib- yes. Internecine fighting-" Oriko finally submits to Kirika's insistent tugging on her shoulders, twisting to allow the black haired girl access to her back. Kirika begins kneading the seer's shoulders, her tongue sticking out as she adopts an expression of comically intense concentration.

Mami licks her lips, a flash of pink on her chalk-white face. "It's a territory grab."

"Hmmm, Mami?" you ask.

"I always stayed out of this kind of thing... except when they tried to come here. But..." She shakes her head, golden drills bouncing. "The Tohoku University Group tried to recruit me, a while ago."

"You turned them down," you say.

She nods slowly. "They... got their support from others..."

"And so did the main Sendai group," you finish. "And now everyone's calling in their favours. Oriko?"

Oriko shakes her head. "I see the future, not the past," she frowns, eyes still closed. "Long held tensions..."

"We're staying out of this," Mami declares. "We're not getting involved."

"The Sendai group is fighting on two fronts," she mutters. "They cann- they're going to retreat and consolidate. Onaga- Tome... It may not be an option, Tomoe."

Mami's lips press together, flattening out into a ruler straight line.

"The tremors are coming from the fighting?" you ask, to confirm.

"Earthquakes..." Oriko grimaces. "One of the Ishinomaki group."

Kirika looks up from massaging Oriko's shoulders. "I could take her," she offers, orange eyes bright. "Even... you know." She waves at her broken leg.

Oriko chuckles. "Yes, you could, dear," the seer leans back against the black haired girl, eliciting a squeak and a vivid red blush from her.

"Ugh," you grunt.

=====

You have one thousand, eight hundred and thirty two Grief marbles, and three Grief Seeds in your pockets.

Mami reaches out for her cup and sips at it to clam her nerves, before making a little face at the cold tea.

You sigh, glancing aside at Oriko, who's luxuriating in Kirika's embrace.

You push yourself off the sofa, Mami making a disappointed little noise, and her hand lingering a little on yours as you pull away. You give her a quick smile, though, as you reach for the teapot. "Oriko, do you have a microwave?"

"In the kitchen," Oriko mutters, waving in the general direction of said kitchen. You head in that direction, bearing the teapot in one hand.

Mami pads into the kitchen, close on your heels, just in time to see you pull open the microwave door to put the teapot in. You freeze guiltily, one hand on the teapot and the other on the microwave door as half lidded golden eyes land on you. "Sabrina, what are yo-"

There's a muted thud from the direction of the living room, and Oriko scrambles in to the kitchen a moment later, one hand leaning on the doorjamb. "No. You do not ruin gyokuro by microwaving it."

Mami sighs wearily, her brows still furrowed in a worried frown. "There's a war going on," she says. "It... hardly..." Nevertheless, she gently nudges your hands away from the microwave, and guides you over to the sink.

Kirika hobbles into the kitchen on her crutches at this point, looking around wide eyed at the hubbub.

You sigh, and obligingly pour the tea down the sink, watching the light green brew swirl down the drain. The leaves you dump into the rubbish. Behind you you can hear Oriko awkwardly pulling open a drawer and withdrawing what turns out to be a wooden box, from which she in turn withdraws a cannister of tea. When you turn, she's very pointedly still hanging on to the tea and giving you a little glare.

"Fine, fine," you mutter. You'll probably brew the tea wrongly, anyway. "Mami, shall we go back?"

"I suppose so," the blonde agrees.

You and Mami meander back into the living room, Kirika stumping past you to join Oriko in the kitchen.

"Mami," you ask, as she seats herself beside you. "Do you know anything else about all these groups, and the girls?"

"Sabrina..." her hand gropes for yours, still icy cold in your grasp. You bring both hands up to cup her hand, warming it a little. "You- we should stay out of this. We can't get mixed up in a war."

You grimaces unhappily, mind churning with possibilities and plans and questions. "That might not be possible, Mami," you tell her. "But... the important thing is that we need to know more about it, first. Whatever happens, we can't go forward blind. We need a plan, even if it's just staying here."

She shivers. "I... I suppose," she admits.

The thump-thud of crutches heralds the return of Kirika and Oriko, bearing the freshly refilled teapot. Kirika's eyes track to you, and then down to Mami's hand, held between two of yours. A grin blossoms on her face, and she gives you a discreet thumbs up.

"You have questions," Oriko says, as she pours out fresh tea for everyone.

You nod, claiming a cup of tea with one hand, Mami still clutching your other hand tightly. You hesitate, and then pass it to Mami, who recieves it with a grateful smile, while you grab the other cup.

"So," you start. "What could be worth all this fighting, this trouble?"

Oriko sighs. "I see the future, not the past," she says wearily. "If I can predict motivations, it's because someone says something, and I infer from that. Nevertheless... Kirika, my Soul Gem?"

The black haired girl fumbles in her pocket, and then replaces Kirika's Soul Gem on the table. She took it back when she headed into the kitchen, in all likelihood?

The seer closes her eyes. "Territory is the ostensible reason. The two... The University Group..." Her lips move silently for a moment. "A trap. They allied themselves with the Ishinomaki girls... they attacked when the Sendai group was split up on a healing circuit. The Tome group... a grudge? One of them used to be from Sendai... No, the University group."

Her Soul Gem begins to seethe Grief in a slow, churning effusion.

"You understand that I cannot look into the past to see exactly why," Oriko notes, voice strained. Kirika worms an arm around her back, anxiously cuddling up to the seer. "I can look forward and make... guesses."

"Right," you say, "But it's important to know. Next question - what's the casualties like?"

"In the immediate aftermath... four... dead," Oriko answers, this one coming quick, as if she'd expected it, though she hesitates a little over the word 'dead'. You can guess why. A sidelong glance at Mami - she swallows, face growing pale again. "In the longer term... another nine, by month's end."

"And the collateral?" you ask grimly.

"A dozen city blocks levelled, across Sendai, and Ishinomaki," Oriko answers.

You can't help but think that that's... not terrible, for what amounts to a war. "What's the chances of them triggering off something bigger? If they have someone who can make earthquakes..."

That startles Oriko. "What? Low-" she twitches, back arching slightly. "High. It's not during the fight. It comes after."

"Crap," you mutter. "This gets worse and worse." Mami's grip on your hand, at this point, is a desperate deathgrip crushing your hand.

"Damn you, Oriko," Mami whispers. "Damn you. Y-you're-"

"I'm not lying, Tomoe," Oriko says sharply.

"Y-you couldn't k-kill Sabrina yourself," Mami counters, gaze hardening and steadying on Oriko's. "So you get her out of the city so that you can."

Kirika bristles, directing an angry gaze at Mami.

I'm holding the rest of the questions in abeyance, by the way, if you choose, now or at any point forward, to continue asking.
-[x]What happens after the Sendai group consolidates?
-[x]Can you give a complete listing of what groups are involved at this time?
-[x]How much does the fighting expand as time goes on?
-[x]How is the combat moving? Where are magical girls moving and at what speed?
-[x]Can you see any specific power sets?
-[x]Do you see Kyouko or Yuma or both?
-[x]Anything else that seems useful?
-[x]You mentioned earthquakes. How are the nearby nuclear reactors holding up?

Oriko places a quelling hand on Kirika's. The berserker subsides, still glaring at Mami.

"Mami, I don't think she is," you say slowly. "She was... misguided, and sure that she was in the right before-" you can see Mami's face growing thunderous at the reminder "-but she never meant to hurt anyone for its own sake."

"She burned down Sayaka's house!" Mami snaps, her fingers tightening on yours. "She blew your leg off! And you think she was misguided? You trust her?"

"Hey!" Kirika snarls, leaning forward.

"Kirika, enough," Oriko says, and the black haired girl sinks back into the sofa again, glaring daggers at Mami. Oriko stands, and turns to help Kirika onto her crutches. "Excuse us," she murmurs.

"No." Mami explodes to her feet, rounding on the seer. "I think you remember the last time you tried to run and hide, Mikuni." She almost spits the name.

You bounce to your feet behind Mami. The sudden burning rage radiating from the blonde catches you by surprise, and so you simply hover, unsure of what to do.

Oriko slants a sidelong look at Mami, carefully interposing herself between Kirika and the blonde.

"Do you deny it?" Mami demands, facing Oriko with steely eyes.

"I did those things," Oriko admits quietly. "But Sabrina is correct. I... leave it to her."

"No," Mami snaps, looking at the seer, and then back at you. "I mean-"

"Mami..." you say gently, touching a hand to her shoulder. You flap your other hand at the pair. Oriko frowns at you, but silently leaves the room, while Mami glares after her. When they step out of the living room -you can sense them moving to another room in the house- you gently pull Mami back to the sofa.

She refuses to sit. Instead, she tugs lightly on your elbow. "Sabrina, let's go. Let's just... go home."

"Mami... you saw what state they're in. They can't hunt Witches... they need me to cleanse their Soul Gems," you say.

"I-I'm- she tried to k-kill you!" Mami exclaims. "I-I'm sure she could find some easy Witches, or a healer or something."

"We can't stay out of this, Mami," you say, trying a different tack. "We can't, or I would. They... the Sendai girls know me. Know what I can do. They... they're not bad people, Mami, but if they come to me for help... the war will follow."

She collapses to the sofa, burying her head in her hands, and you sit beside her, taking both her hands between yours.

"Whatever we decide, we need information first," you tell Mami. "Even if Oriko is lying, we can't make any judgments based on an incomplete picture, but whatever Oriko has to say, we should let her finish before we make any judgments."

"She already finished!" Mami replies. "We could just go home! Don't let her feed you any more lies." You can tell she doesn't really believe that, either.

"Mami, I won't go rushing off before I have enough information, and a plan," you try to reassure her.

Mami's expression crumples, and she slumps. "You've already made up your mind."

You sigh, heartfelt, still holding her hands in your own. Icy cold fingers clutching yours, shaking in fear. "Please, Mami. If there's a war happening... I-I can't just sit here and let it happen," you whisper, feeling utterly wretched. "Thirteen dead magical girls, and who knows how many in the crossfire. I met some of them, Mami. They're not all bad people. A dozen city blocks. I... can't. I just..."

Mami stares at you, expression hollow and defeated. "I know. I k-know." She laughs bitterly. "You w-wouldn't be you if you could." She gives you a smile, and it's a ghastly rictus of an expression, nothing at all like the warm, cheerful smiles you know she can give. "I'm going w-with you," she declares.

=====

If Mumi had her way, PMAS would be a happy slice of life interspersed with a few light Witch hunts.

You give her a smile, slightly relieved, mind working on deciding the best course ahead; to use timestop to extend the time you have available to you? "Of course," you tell her. "I would have asked if you hadn't volunteered... You're a powerful and experienced magical girl, Mami. I'd be stupid not to ask you come with me."

Mami's expression crumples even further, and her fingers slacken on yours. "Powerful... and experienced. Yes. Yes, I suppose I am..." Her Soul Gem, already slowly bubbling with Grief, suddenly spikes again.

A chill runs down your spine. "Mami, what's wrong?"

"N-no," Mami shakes her head. "It's n-nothing."

You frown. "Mami, I'm going to ask Homura to come over, OK? We- I- The clock's ticking, and time stop will give us more... time."

Mami nods jerkily. "Y-yes. If you think it's for the best..."

You look at Mami, worried frown etching itself on your face. But... you're racing the clock here. "Homura?" you call telepathically.

"Yes, Sabrina?" the time traveller replies almost instantly.

"Could we get your help for timestop for a bit? We're over at Oriko's house," you say.

"On my way," she replies.

"She's on her way," you tell Mami. She's looking down at her hands, still held between yours. You squeeze them lightly, trying to reas-

-sure her.

You blink. Homura's standing in front of you in her puella magi costume, regarding the two of you with faded lilac eyes. Her hand on your shoulder links you to her, the world greyed out in timestop, oppressive silence pressing in again.

"Thanks for coming, Homura," you say. "Gem cleanse?"

Homura bobs her head in a little nod of acknowledgement, and presents to you her Soul Gem. Mami's hand is already held in yours, and so you easily siphon off the corruption from her ring and Homura's amethyst Soul Gem.

"Alright," you say, absently compressing the Grief down into marbles. "Homura, I'm sorry for calling you here and then chasing you off again, but could you give Mami and I a moment? It's important."

Homura nods again. "What is this about?"

"A war in Ishinomaki," you say. "But... later. Please?"

A faint crease appears on Homura's head, but she nods, withdrawing her hand from your shoul-

-der. A rope has joined Mami's hand on your lap, and Homura's already walking away, carefully doling out the rope from the main reel.

"Thanks," you call after the time traveller, before turning to face Mami properly. You pull her into a tight hug, and she hangs limply in your grasp. "Mami, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry... this must be miserable for you. And... it doesn't look like it's going to be getting better any time soon."

Mami doesn't respond.

She's shaking.

The one time you don't nitpick the vote.

It takes you a moment to realize what's wrong, as Mami shakes in your arms. But when you do...

Oh, no.

You tighten your embrace around Mami.

"No. Nonono-" you begin, words almost tripping over themselves. "Mami, I- Mami. You know that before all your history as a magical girl, I care about you, right? I'll be with you no matter what, for you."

"... d-don't," Mami whispers, shaking her head. "D-d-don't-"

You cringe. "Mami, no." Stark desperation leaks into your tone. "I'm so, so sorry - Mami, I didn't mean it that way."

Mami shakes her head against your shoulder. "I-I- whatever y-you need, S-Sabrina. J-just d-don't- l-leav-" Mami shudders in your grasp, and brings her arms up to wrap around you with desperate fervour.

She's still shaking.

"I won't, Mami," you say, holding her equally tightly. "You mean the world to me. You're a good person, and you're someone I care about. That matters far more to me than anything else. You don't need to do anything to earn it, because I care about you, Mami. Not the magical girl, not what you can do. You."

A fraction of your mind is focused on keeping her Soul Gem clean, draining away the trickle of corruption suffusing her Gem.

Mami sniffles quietly.

"I..." you can feel her swallowing. "J-just-"

"I won't," you repeat. "I mean what I said, Mami. You mean the world to me, and I care about you."

"OK." She swallows again. "OK," she repeats, voice shaky. You can tell she's trying to force herself to a semblance of calmness. She tries to pull out of the hug. "L-let's call H-Homura back."

=====

Oh hey, Mami's all better again!

You keep your arms around Mami, not letting her go. She's not OK yet.

"No. Don't do this to yourself," you tell her. "We can go when you're ready, Mami."

She struggles weakly, half-heartedly. "N-no, we- I s-shouldn't-"

"No," you repeat. "Take as long as you need, Mami. It's OK."

She goes limp in your arms, and hesitantly returns her arms to around your waist. When you don't protest, she buries her head against your neck. You can feel her breath coming in short, shuddering gasps, warm against your skin as you let her recover. In what has become an unfortunately familiar motion, you rub her back gently.

Eventually, she pulls back again. You tighten your arms around her, giving her ine last squeeze, before releasing her. She reaches up to touch her hands lightly to yours, holding them between the two of you. Her gaze meets your, teary golden eyes searching blue ones. "S-Sabrina," she says. "Y-you'll-"

"No, Mami," you say, wrapping your fingers around hers and squeezing. "I'm staying with you because you're a wonderful person, and my friend. I'm not leaving you."

"O-OK." Mami says. "O-OK. I-I'll t-try to r-r-remb-" she gulps. "S-sorry f-fo-"

"No," you say again, raising one hand to press a finger against her lips. "No, Mami. Don't apologize. I'm sorry, Mami, for giving you the impression I only cared about you for what you could do."

The flow of corruption from her Soul Gem has slowed to the barest of trickles, and you leave it at that - safe enough for now, you think.

Mami sniffles. "O-OK," she says, a wobbly smile showing through the sheen of tears. "C-could I-I have a moment?"

"Of course," you say. "Take all the time you need."

Mami wipes at her eyes with the back of her hand, trying to compose herself.

"OK," Mami says, voice slightly stronger. "H-Homura?" Her voice cracks a little, but in the silence of the timestop, it's loud enough.

The sound of Homura's heels ringing on the floor precedes her as she walks down the corridor back towards the living room, reentering the room a moment later. Amethyst eyes give you a questioning look, dipping for a moment to you and Mami's joined hands before returning to your face.

"Anyway, Homura, I'm sorry for having to pull you over," you sigh. "But... there's a war in Ishinomaki, Homura."

Her jaw tightens. "I see. The Sendai group? Tachibana, Mori, Minami, Hamasaki, and... Tanaka?"

You recognize a few of those names. "That's them, yeah."

"That will be a large fight," she observes with a heavy frown. She claims a single person sofa, sitting primly on it. "It's not worth getting mixed up in." You can feel Mami twitch slightly, the movement transmitted through your linked hands.

"That... might not be an option," you say unhappily. "I met the Sendai girls when they came by to heal Masami." You see the time traveller's head move slightly at the mention of the name, a tiny flash of recognition, before the rest of the statement fully sinks in for her.

"I see," she says. "You think they'll come to find you?"

"Maybe. I don't know," you admit. "I... asked you here so that I could extend the time for talking to Oriko."

The frown on Homura's face deepens yet again, beginning to resemble a series of World War I trenchworks. "Don't trust her."

Mami's hand tightens on yours.

"I know," you say heavily. "I know. But if there's a war..." You trail off.

"Then we defend our borders," she says, nodding.

"Maybe," you say noncommittally. "I still want to ask Oriko more questions."

Homura nods, and you stand. Mami rises alongside you, still holding your hand tightly. The time traveller reaches into her shield, and pulls out a reel of thread, which she tosses lightly to you. You catch it with a quick, "Thanks."

Following your magical senses, you find Oriko and Kirika sitting before the glass doors, cast open to let the smell of the roses outside permeate the room. You loop the thread around Oriko's wrist, bringing her into the time stop with a gasp and a confused blink before her usual demeanour reasserts itself.

"Ah," she says. "You asked Akemi Homura to come over."

You can feel Mami tense, and you squeeze her hand lightly.

"Yep," you confirm. "I've still got questions, so... grab Kirika?"

The seer nods, and reaches her only hand out, grabbing the berserker's hand. Colour blooms across the black haired girl, and she bolts upright when her surroundings register, staggering slightly when he broken leg hits the floor, but still pulling Oriko protectively behind her as her other fingers hook into claws and snarling animalistically at you.

"Kirika, no," Oriko says gently, sliding her single arm around Kirika's waist. "We're just talking."

"Oh. If you say so, Oriko." The berserker instantly deflates, chuckling sheepishly. "Sorry," she offers, glancing at you.

"Right, then..." you say, turning to go. Oriko helps Kirika onto her crutches, and the four of you return to the living room, Oriko sitting on one end of the large sofa with Kirika cuddled into her side, Mami cuddled anxiously into yours, and Homura surveying all of you with tired eyes.

Oriko takes her Soul Gem from Kirika, and cups it in her hand, exposed to you for cleansing.

You nod. "OK. Next question. Who's currently involved, and who's working with whom?"

The seer nods, and answers quickly, having expected that question. "There are currently four distinct groups in the fight. Sendai, and Fukushima. The University group, and Ishinomaki. Groups from... Onagawa, and Tokyo, will be joining the main Sendai group, in that order, and Osaki and Tome to the Ishinomaki side."

"Hmm, OK," you nod. "How about powers? What can you see?"

Oriko closes her eyes and frowns, concentrating. Her Soul Gem seethes with a film of corruption that you begin wiping away. "Earthmover, you know about. Telekinetic... two of them... no, gravity," she mutters. "A water controller, healer, a technology controller, a teleporter. Lightning... a force fielder..." she winces, and shakes her head.

"OK. How's the combat moving? Where are the combatants going, and at what speed?" you ask.

"Once more, I am not omniscient," Oriko says tartly. "I am unable to pinpoint a location just from seeing parts of the fight. That said, the Ishononaki fight is currently in a lull, the Sendai group are trying to link up with their allies." The seer frowns. "Sendai... the University group has the remaining two of the Sendai group pinned down... near a museum? The Fukushima group will arrive there in time to save them."

"How about Kyouko, and Yuma?" you ask. Mami twitches again at the question - probably uncomfortable territory for her.

"Sakura Kyouko..." Oriko concentrates for a moment, and then shakes her head. "She's staying out of it."

"Good, I think," you say. Mami relaxes fractionally, nodding in agreement with you, seeming unconsciously. "Last question, unless I think of more - what about the nearby nuclear reactors? Will they be affected?" You can feel the weight of Homura's, Oriko's, and Mami's puzzled looks at you. Kirika seems completely unconcerned, humming to herself and twining her fingers through Oriko's hair.

"The... nuclear reactors?" Oriko asks. "Do you mean the Fukushima nuclear plant?"

"Those, yes," you nod.

"I don't... see... the relevance?" the seer asked. "The fighting won't go anywhere near that region?"

"No, I mean, with the earthquakes and all..." you explain.

Oriko's head tilts slightly. "With their recent upgrades? No."

"Oh. Well, that's a relief, at least," you mutter. "Anything you'd like to volunteer?"

Oriko grimaces, and shakes her head.

=====

Sorry this is late. Busy day. And I know I've said this before - but again, I might have to cut back on my updating rates for the next few days or so.

Your mind whirls as you absorb the information, hiding your dismay that everyone seems to be advocating staying and holding ground in Mitakihara. A measured nod at Oriko. "Thank you for the information. Two more questions; first, when can we expect the first... casualties?"

"... three days hence," Oriko says.

You close your eyes, and bow your head. "Alright. The fighting's over territory and resources, right? And if I make those redundant..." you say. Mami makes a worried little noise, and clutches at you a little tighter. You lay your hand over hers, shooting her a quick smile.

Oriko shrugs. "Are you asking for a prediction, or a guess? The latter would be that they'll fight over you. They're not just fighting for territory or resources."

"The Sendai Group aren't free of wrongdoing," Homura observes, eyes hooded.

You groan, putting your head in your hands, trying to think it through. You want to stop the war, but at the same time, you can't, and you don't really have anyone to help you do it, not even Mami, really - she's only going along because you are.

"Alright," you sigh. "Alright. First things first; we should get every Mitakihara magical girl on the same page... Kasamino too." You squeeze Mami's hand, sorry. "We can contact them by telepathy?"

Homura nods, reaching for her shield. Kirika spares a glare for her as the time traveller cranks the shield, ending the timestop with the clatter of gears. Colour and sound leach back into the world, the subtle, distant sounds of the city, colours vivid under the bright sunlight shining in through the windows.

Mami takes a deep breath, relaxing fractionally.

You reach out telepathically for the telekinetic and illusionist you'd met recently. "Masami? Hiroko?" Out of the corner of your eye, you see Oriko glance sidelong at Homura.

"Sabrina?" Hiroko replies first.

"Good morning," you say. "Is Masami there?"

"Would you... like some tea?" Oriko offers hesitantly, looking at the time traveller. Homura twitches, and shakes her head.

"Yeah, I'm here," the redheaded telekinetic replies, voice tetchy. "Good morning. Do you need something?"

"No, not really," you say. "But... listen. You've heard about the earthquakes in Ishinomaki?"

"Yeah," Masami says. "What about them?"

"It's a... territory dispute, between several groups of magical girls," you tell her, struggling a little with the words. "The fighting's... going to get worse, and may spill over to Mitakihara. Just... keep an eye out, and stay alert, OK?"

Silence for a moment. "Damn," Masami grunts. "Thanks for the heads up."

"Thank you, Sabrina," Hiroko echoes. Another moment of silence.

"You stay safe too, OK?" Masami sighs, finally.

"Yeah, thanks," you say, and close the connection, looking around. Kirika has moved on from fussing with Oriko's hair to fussing with her dress, while she sips unperturbably at her cup of tea. Mami has similarly claimed a cup, sipping slowly from it to calm her nerves.

Alright. Now for the tricky one. You take a deep breath, and reach out once more. "Kyouko?"

It takes a moment before she responds. "Yeah, what?"

"Something urgent's come up; do you know about the earthquakes in Ishinomaki?" you ask.

"D'you think I get the news? No, I don't" she snaps back at you. "But consider me informed. What about 'em?"

"It's not an earthquake - it's a big magical girl brawl over territory," you say. "There's apparently twenty odd magical girls mixed up in there."

A long moment of silence. "Lemme guess. You're going off t' fight a war."

Well. You can't say you weren't considering it... "What? Look, I'm just giving you a friendly warning, to look out for them, because it's not a fight that's going to stay in Ishinomaki."

"... fine," Kyouko grumbles, before reluctantly adding, "Thanks, I guess."

"You're welcome," you say.

"Bye," she grunts, and closes the connection.

Alright, that's everyone done, then. One last call to make... "Miss Mori?"

"Miss Sabrina?" the healer's telepathic voice is strained. "Now isn't a good time."

Oriko jerks upright on the sofa and looks around wildly, before glaring at you.

"Yeah, I know about the fight," you reply. "Are you alright?"

"No!" she snaps back. "I'm currently hiding in some tiny alley with Sakura and trying to link up with Akiko, so that we can get out of this damned city!"

"Right," you reply.

"Miss Sabrina," another telepathic voice joins to conversation. Akiko. "I hate to be so crass, but is that offer of cleansing still open?"

If you're wondering why they don't just teleport, by the way, it's because they're not sure where they are relative to each other.

You debate internally for what feels like forever, going back and forth on demanding more information or not or whether to intervene... but ultimately, you come to a decision. "It is," you reply to Akiko, despite your misgivings.

"Thank you," Akiko says, after a long pause.

"When you have a moment, I'd quite like to know what happened over there," you say.

"That's fair," the bluenette replies.

"Hold on a moment, by the way," you say, and glance at Oriko, meeting her glare. "Oriko, has anything changed about the Sendai group's escape?"

Both Homura and Mami look questioningly at you.

"They're coming here," she snaps back at you.

"What did you do?" Homura asks sharply.

"I... just talked to the Sendai girls, asked if they needed help?" you admit.

"They'll be here tomorrow," Oriko grumbles. "Assuming you don't do anything else."

"Alright," you say to Akiko. "See you whenever, then."

To Rin, you add, "Hang in there. Your friends will be there soon."

"Thanks?" she huffs back, voice still strained.

Homura's lips compress into a ruler-straight line, accompanied by a heavy frown. "We need to be ready to defend Mitakihara, then," she grunts. She reaches behind her shield, plucking out a matte Desert Eagle, which she holds in one hand. "Oriko. When are they arriving?"

"Tomorrow, early morning," Oriko says, glancing cooly at the time traveller despite the implicit threat and quelling Krika's immediate, defensive bristling with a hand looped around a slim waist.

"Where?" Homura asks.

"By teleportation, to a park near Miss Gaikotsu's apartment. Sabrina knows where it is," Oriko says after concentrating for a moment.

Homura nods.

Mami gives the time traveller a look. "We meet them there?"

"Yes," Homura says simply, a very final tone in her voice.

Cold tea? And yet the tea is still warm in your cup.

"We're not killing anyone if we can help it," you declare, frowning at Homura.

Homura frowns right back.

"Of course not," Mami agrees, smiling at you. "We... you want to help them, right, Sabrina?"

"Yeah," you admit. "I kinda do."

Homura regards you with a heavy frown, lips twisted to the side. "We can't... afford to be involved in a war."

You sigh. "Homura, even if I hadn't... ah... meddled, they would have come here, anyway. Right, Oriko?"

The seer nods silently.

Homura glowers at the seer.

"So either we do something now, or we wait until a twenty-something magical girl war rolls on to our doorstep," you say. "But... in any case, I don't want them to come here, either. That will drag this city-" and Madoka "-into the war."

A reluctant nod from Homura. "The best would be to intercept them and-" her gaze flicks, lightning quick, to Mami, and then back to you "-drive them away." You don't think Mami noticed the look.

You huff out a sigh. "But I would like to help them... No. I want the fighting to stop," you mutter, fisting one hand in your lap. Mami squeezes your other hand, looking... awed. Admiringly? Sadly? "And... if we intervene early, maybe we can stop the fighting from escalating too much?" you finish.

Mami speaks up again, still leaning against you. "Maybe... The University Group has been planning this for a while, though. They approached me... last year? So they've been planning on this for a while..."

Homura nods in agreement.

"Hmm..." you say. "We can extract the Sendai group from Ishinomaki, and ask them what's really going on?"

"They don't need to be rescued," Homura points out, tilting her head to indicate Oriko. "Do they." Despite the phrasing, directed at Oriko, it's really not a question.

"They will link up with their allies from Fukushima and teleport here," Oriko says with a shrug. "I can see further than that, but I suspect it would be pointless," she adds, glancing sidelong at you.

All together, now: Her brain damage is acting up again.

You lean back on the sofa, staring blankly up at the ceiling as your brain fills up with thoughts and plans and guesses, debating furiously with yourself on the merits of interfering or not... but really, at this point, you're committed to it. Your mind wanders off to committing horrific acts of science before you hastily quash that line of thought as unproductive for now, and return to the topic at hand.

"OK," you say, after what feels like an eternity of mental debate and back and forth arguments. You sit up again, and Mami shifts so that she can still lean up against your side. "OK, so, here's the plan."

"Mami, I... we're heading over to Ishinomaki," you tell her, and then glancing around at everyone. "Things haven't truly escalated yet, so we can still nip this in the bud - but only if we act now." Mami nods against your shoulder - not really agreement, you don't think, but willing to go along.

Your gaze settles on the seer and her girlfriend, and you brace yourself - this next sentence isn't going to go down well. "Kirika, I'd like you along on this trip."

Mami jerks, looking up at you. "Sabrina, you can't be seri-"

Oriko frowns heavily. "With her leg as it is-"

Kirika, by contrast, looks first interested, and then glances at Oriko and shrinks a little.

Homura... looks at you, that silent stare conveying better than words could her doubts.

You wave your hands frantically, and Mami and Oriko stop talking, looking first at each other, then you.

"Kirika, your antimagic is too useful to ignore in a meguca on meguca fight," you tell her. "And... if you come along, we can heal your leg, just in case." Simultaneously, you telepath a message to Homura and Mami, "She's insurance, too, a hostage. Kind of. Oriko hopefully won't walk us into a trap if we have Kirika with us, right?"

Kirika looks at Oriko, obviously engaged in their own telepathic conversation.

Homura's lips press together. "We're keeping them under house arrest because they can't hunt for themselves."

Mami chimes in, with, "She... are you sure that's wise, Sabrina?"

"We took them down once," you say resolutely. "We can do it again. And besides - Oriko is afraid of my... threats," you finish with a grimace at the unhappy memory. "And... Homura, I doubt you want to go, and I really want a trump card if we're going to wade into a war."

The time traveller grimaces.

"We'll go," Kirika says brightly, giving you a happy grin. "Oriko thinks we'll help."

Oriko looks... somewhat unhappy, a faint crease on her brow, but smiles at Kirika. "I won't be going, dear," she says gently.

Kirika instantly deflates, directing an utterly woebegone look at the seer. "But-"

Oriko puts her hand to Kirika's lips, and then slides it across, stroking the girl's cheek. "I'll be fine for a while, Kirika," she says with a smile. "Go," she instructs simply.

Kirika blinks rapidly, eyes tearing up. "A-are you sure, Oriko?"

"Yes," the seer smiles.

"OK, then," Kirika agrees finally. She looks up at you and takes a deep breath, eyes now determined. "Yeah, I'm going. Uhh... question."

"Hmm?" you raise your eyebrows at her.

"'Meguca'?" she asks.

You flush slightly. "Uh... just a word for magical girls. 'Magical girls', 'meguca'?" you finish in English. Homura very slowly brings her hand to her face, hiding her expression.

Kirika flashes you a grin. "I like it!" Oriko mirrors Homura's pained look.

...

"Right," you say, and turn to Homura. "Homura... We'll be gone for a while, so... keep an eye on Madoka and Sayaka, OK? I don't trust Kyuubey not to make a move while we're gone." Telepathically, you add. "And they don't know about the lich thing."

Homura blinks slowly. "Of course," she says. You get the distinct impression that a lesser person would be rolling her eyes right about now. "Rlich thing?" she asks telepathically, slurring the 'l-' phenome a little.

"We'll keep in touch by telepathy, yeah?" you nod. Internally frowning at yourself at the rather silly mistake, you continue. "Oh, uh. English word, but what I mean is the Soul Gem thing, you know?"

Homura nods silently.

"Alright, then," you say, standing. "Kirika, we'll heal you on the way over, or maybe if it takes longer, when we find Rin?"

"OK," Kirika shrugs indifferently as Oriko helps her to her feet. "Who's Rin?"

"Oh. The healer with the Sendai group," you tell her.

"OK," she shrugs again.

"Sabrina, may I request a cleansing of my Soul Gem, and that you leave me a Grief Seed?" Oriko asks, looking at you.

"Ah, yes," you agree. "Yeah, you'll need that... Homura, your Soul Gem, too?" You reach into your pocket, pulling out Gwen's Grief Seed and leaving it on the table, simultaneously cleansing their Soul Gems. You carefully check Hildegarde's seed, still in your opposite pocket.

The seer inspects her Soul Gem, and nods, satisfied. "Please give us a moment," Oriko says, rising alongside Kirika. You stand, turning to hold a hand out to Mami. She accepts it with a little smile, and doesn't let go even after you pull her to her feet. The three of you walk outside the room, heading over to the backyard, Homura giving you an inscrutable gaze as you do so.

You can sense Oriko and Kirika moving closer to each other, before you deliberately stop looking with your Grief senses.

The three of you look at each other in silence, tired amethyst eyes in particular boring into you. "Come back safe," she says, eventually.

"I damned well intend to," you say seriously. "I'm not done here. You stay safe too, OK?"

Mami smiles, a little. "Yes, stay safe, Homura."

Homura nods sharply.

You turn away slightly, and build a large... well, carpet, out of Grief as Oriko and Kirika exit the house. Oriko's long silvery hair is slightly mussed, and Kirika's step is light, even on her crutches. You raise an eyebrow at the black haired girl, and citrine eyes crinkle into an embarassed grin and a small blush.

"Take care of her," Oriko says, studying you carefully.

You snort. "Yeah," you say. "As I said - I damned well intend to get back safe and intact."

"See you, Oriko," Kirika says, her hand lingering on Oriko's as they step apart.

"See you, Homura," you say, looking at the time traveller.

She nods sharply again, amethyst eyes not leaving yours. "By- No. See you soon, Sabrina, Mami."

"See you, Homura," Mami echoes.

Your goodbyes said, the three of you load onto the carpet, Kirika carefully putting the crutches and a plastic bag you didn't notice earlier down beside her on the carpet, stretching her splinted leg straight out on the carpet.

"Some food and drink," Oriko notes, when she sees you looking at the bag. "Enough for lunch."

"Right, thanks," you nod at her, as you raise the carpet slightly. "Wish us luck!"

The five of you look at each other in silence. Trepidation and tension fills the air, Homura giving you a sharp nod, Mami sitting close to you with one hand around your waist, all your goodbyes said... You nod, and raise the carpet into the air, beginning to head east.

The first part of the flight is spent in silence, the three of you lost in your own thoughts as the wind rushes part you, cutting across Mitakihara City. "So..." you send a message to Mami, using telepathy rather than shout over the rushing wind - you're not sure exactly how fast you're going, but it's fast. "I just realized something."

"What is it, Sabrina?" she asks, turning to give your a little smile, squinting against the wind.

"...I just realized I don't know where Ishinomaki is," you admit.

"Oh, Sabrina," she closes her eyes, but the smile becomes more genuine, if amused, as her hand around your waist squeezes you lightly. "North east, Sabrina. A little more north than east."

"Right," you adjust your course slightly, banking lightly. You scoot around to face Kirika, who's looking inquisitively at you, both legs poking straight out on the carpet.

"We should start on your leg," you send to her, letting Mami in, too.

"Yeah!" Kirika agrees enthusiastically. "Not being able to move properly sucks."

"Alright, then," you say, summoning the glow of healing magic to your hands. Mami reluctantly releases you, the golden radiance of her magic rising to her hands, too. You bring your hand to Kirika's knee, letting the healing magic sink in.

"I'm still not sure... I-I- of course, your-" Mami begins, before cutting herself off. "I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize for that," you say gently. "But... we kind of need her for the fights." You'd really messed up her knee, you note.

Mami just sighs. "Y-you're right... It's just..."

"I know, and I understand," you say gently.

Mami falls silent, and the two of you continue to heal Kirika's knee.

"Hey, Homura?" you reach out again.

"Sabrina?" Homura sounds surprised to hear from you so soon.

"What did you mean, when you said that the Sendai girls aren't totally blameless?" you ask.

Homura doesn't respond immediately. "You should have asked before you left," she says tonelessly. "They were... not gentle about their... operations."

"Right. Anything more you can say?" you ask.

"You've met their healer and teleporter, and Hamasaki?" she asks.

"Yeah," you confirm. Rin, Sakura, and Akiko.

"Their last two members are Tanaka Tamiko and Minami Yumi," Homura says. "Force fields, and gravity respectively."

"Hmm, thanks," you say. You switch over to talking to Mami. "Mami?"

"Yes, Sabrina?" the blonde looks inquisitively at you.

"What do you know about the University Group?" you ask. "What are they like, their powers, reputation and so on?"

"Oh," Mami says. "Well, from what I heard, there's six of them, but I've only met two, Ayano Chika and Umeko Yuko, when they came to recruit me. They seemed... nice enough. Nervous, though, maybe they were afraid of being found out?"

"Or maybe of being in the presence of the illustrious Tomoe Mami?" you smile at her and bump her shoulder lightly with yours, still keeping your hands steady on Kirika's knee.

"Ahhh... I don't think so," Mami responds. Nevertheless, she smiles a little in response. "Their powers... I've heard one of them can turn invisible. Uhh... one of them can fly, another has plant powers?" She shrugs lightly.

"Hmm..." you say. "Last thing... do you think any of them would listen to you?"

Mami sighs, the sound lost over the rushing wind. "I don't know... That was... late last year? December... And they wanted to recruit me because I was a powerful magical girl..." Her eyes hold distant, remembered pain.

"Oh, Mami..." you stop healing, instead drawing Mami into a hug. She accepts it, hugging you back tightly. Kirika looks at the two of you curiously, but doesn't comment, instead scratching at her side.

Mami pulls away after a while. "That's... really all I know. Sorry I couldn't help more."

"No, don't apologize," you admonish her, patting her lightly on the shoulder. "That's plenty."

The healing doesn't take too long, to your surprise - all the tissue and bone is still present, albeit... mangled. A few cleanses later, Kirika's knee is fully healed, and at her request, you widened the platform a little so that she could stand and walk around, working the kinks out of her knee seemingly without any fear of the precipitous drop towards the suburbs below.

"Hey, Sabrina?" Kirika says tentatively, on a private connection to you.

"Yes?" you raise an eyebrow at the berserker.

"My ojou's better than yours," she says seriously.

"No she's not," you say absently. "And Mami's not my ojou."

"... haaaaah, I don't believe you," she says firmly. "If you love her, you should be honest about it! But confessions are scaaaaaary! Do you need help?"

"No, I'm good," you say, and deflect the topic. "How's that single bed working out for you?"

No response. You glance back to see Kirika doing an excellent impression of a tomato, and probably releasing that high pitched kettle-like noise to boot, even if you can't hear it over the rushing wind. You grin to yourself, and face forward again, letting Mami tuck herself against you a little tighter.

A while later, the sun racing towards its zenith above you, Kirika's voice sounds in your head again, bright and cheerful. "Are we there yet?"

Dammit.

"No, we're not, Kirika," you tell her, while Mami nestles against you. She slides her arm around your waist, holding on to you, and you reciprocate with your arm around hers. She gives you a wan little smile, and then leans her head against you and closes her eyes.

"Can we... just stay like this for a while?" she asks.

"Of course, Mami," you reply.

She nuzzles her head against you for a bit, and then seems to go to sleep, her breathing evening out.

The suburbs, short apartment blocks by the dozen interspersed with rolling stretched of greenery, roll by beneath you.

"So Kirika," you reach out by telepathy to the berserker, now returned to bouncing on the edge of the carpet, still completely indifferent to the precipitous drop below.

"Yeah?" she turns to grin at you.

"So how do your powers work?" you ask her, turning as far as you can without disturbing Mami - just far enough to see Kirika on the edge of your vision. A thought strikes you, and you add, hastily, "Don't demonstrate now!"

"I know that!" Kirika replies, bouncing indignantly. "I'm not stupid!"

"Right, sorry," you apologize. "Just... y'know, it'd be really dangerous if you did that, yeah?"

"OK!" she says brightly. "Anyway, I can choose who my magic affects. You, uh, might have noticed."

"Mmm, good to know," you say. "How about shaping the blast? Like, projecting a cone or something?"

Kirika shrugs. "Yeah, I can! Can completely melt a Witch like that, too. Kinda funny. I hit the Witch, and then it goes 'oh nooooo I'm meeeeelllltiiiing' and then splat." She waves her hands above her head and then flops bonelessly to the carpet to demonstrate, before rolling over and grinning at you. "Well, after I hit it a few times, anyway.*

"Excellent," you say.

"Anything else?" Kirika asks.

"Not that I can think of," you say.

Kirika nods, lying flat on the carpet with her arms splayed as she stares up at the clear blue sky, the midday sun beating down on you. "Oh hey, food!"

"Hmmm? Ah, good point," you agree. With your free hand, you rummage around in the plastic bag, and find some bread, some wrapped up stuff that's cold to the touch, a few bottles of juice, some lettuce, and assorted other foodstuffs. "Sandwiches."

"Yay!" Kirika cheers. "Is there ham?"

"Probably?" you nudge the wrapped package with your free hand, awkwardly teasing the paper open. "Yeah, it's ham."

Kirika bounces over, eagerly starting a sandwich for herself, while you carefully ease your arm out from around Mami. She makes a little mewling complaint, but is apparently thoroughly asleep, so you begin assembling two simple sandwiches, layering ham and vegetable between slices of bread.

When you're done, you nudge Mami gently. You can see her lips moving as she mumbles something, but it's too soft to hear over the wind. "Mami, lunch," you nudge her again.

She opens her eyes, looking around muzzily and smiling warmly at you, before seeming to remember where she is, and where you're going. The smile fades a little, but you smile at her and present her with the sandwich. She accepts it, warm fingers brushing deliberately across yours as she takes it.

"Thank you, Sabrina," she says warmly, before starting on the sandwich, tucking it away in neat bites.

"No problem," you reply, equally warmly, while you begin eating your own sandwich. Some rustles, barely heard over the rushing wind, signify Kirika constructing her second sandwich, having scarfed down the first.

The suburbs, by now, have given way to countryside, which then shifted back to suburbs again - you're definitely on the outskirts of Ishinomaki, now, you think as you pass a bottle of juice to Mami. So this'd be a reasonable time...

"Rin, Akiko," you call out telepathically.

"What is it?" Rin responds first, mental voice still strained and upset. "Yes, Miss Sabrina?" Akiko replies next, a trace of worry now present in her voice that wasn't there before.

"I, and my friends are headed in to Ishinomaki right now."

Dead silence.

"For the purpose of?" Akiko manages.

"To end the war," you reply. "Would it be... terribly inconvenient if we made a... scene?"

"... no?" Akiko says faintly.

"Right. See you- actually, hold that thought," you say, and end the call. "Hey Mami, Kirika?" you glance around the carpet, at Mami, still leaning against you, and Kirika still burning off her energy pacing around.

"Mmm?" Mami peers up at you, while Kirika snaps to comically series attention.

"Can you sense the Grief I'm manipulating?" you ask, pointing at the carpet beneath you.

"A little," Mami says, at the same time as Kirika's cheerful "Nope!"

"It's faint," Mami continues, shooting a look at Kirika, who pulls her lower eyelid down and sticks her tongue out at the blonde.

"Hmm... do you think that it can be sensed from the ground?" you ask.

Mami thinks about it. "I think so?" she says. "But I think my... experience... lets me sense it better?"

"Hey!" Kirika complains.

"Do you think the Ishinomaki group might sense me, then?" you ask.

Mami frowns. "I think so? They've been established for a while..."

This update just kept on going and going, 'til I decided enough is enough.

"... Hmm," you say to Mami. "I think we should land, then, and roofhop further in?"

Mami nods. "That's a good idea, Sabrina."

Out of the corner of your eye, you can see Kirika give Mami a narrow little look, and then she looks at you and grins sunnily.

...

Right.

You're already descending for a rooftop below, a particularly tall apartment block. "Thank you for flying Mitakihara Meguca Airlines, we hope to see you again soon," you mutter under your breath as you land.

The carpet dissolves under your feet, whirling into a constellation of marbles that whips around you and pours into your sling bag. A handful of marbles remain hovering in a loose cloud around you, ready for defense or attack. You, Mami, and Kirika drop smoothly to your feet on the rooftop, Mami still sticking close by you.

"OK, Akiko, Rin," you send out telepathically, including Mami and Kirika. "Akiko, we're coming for you first. Where are you... or rather, any landmarks near you?"

"There aren't," frustration bleeds into Rin's tone. "If we had a good landmark, Sakura can teleport there and we'd be out of here!"

Akiko pauses for a moment before responding. "Hiyoriyama park, near the center of the city, it should be quite obvious. It's on a hilltop. We teleported there... I'm somewhere... north of it."

"Good enough," you say. "Rin, how about you?"

"Somewhere there," she says, voice stressed. "We're hiding from a bunch of magical girls who attacked us, so pardon me for not keeping track of where I ran!"

"On our way, then," you reply, looking around at Mami and Kirika, both listening clos-

Well, that'd be a lie. Mami's listening closely, yes, and you catch her eye, giving her a smile which she returns faintly. Kirika... is playing with the little plush bunny that's always hanging off her waist. When she sees you looking, she eeps and hides the plush toy, giving you a sheepish grin.

You shake your head. "Aaaaanyway. Let's go... can't be too hard to find that park, right?"

Mami takes a deep breath. "Yes, let's go end a war," she says, trying for a firm, resolute tone.

"Whoo! Let's go!" Kirika says, and immediately leaps for the next roof with a tremendous cracking noise of shattering concrete underfoot.

You touch Mami lightly on her elbow, and smile at her, trying to put encouragement and gratitude and apology into the simple gesture, before following the berserker. Mami's a step behind.

You spread your senses, magical and mundane alike, as you bound across the roofs, simply observing. This city's different from Mitakihara. Older, not as shiny as Mitakihara. Worn. Even the rooftops you and Kirika are leaving cracks in are more weathered, more tired than the ones back home, and you fancy that you can smell the sea even from here, a faint tang of salt air.

You have the faintest impression that there should have been tsunami damage, but there's none to be seen - it hasn't come through yet, maybe?

The park, indeed, is quite easy to find, a rolling expanse of greenery laid over a small hill. It looks like a nice place, you muse as you veer north of it as Akiko suggested.

One magical presence, on the edge of your senses.

Then two.

Then more.

You suck in a worried breath as you land, taking the landing on your shoulder and bleeding off momentum. Mami halts beside you, her landing far more graceful than yours, and a quick call has Kirika stopping, too. Four magical girls, on the edge of your perception, three in one group, and one alone, bounding along rooftops.

"Akiko-"

"Not now!" she barks back, cutting you off.

Yeah, that's close enough. "Mami, Kirika, they found Akiko, it looks like. I'm going to try and catch their attention."

Kirika grins.

Mami nods. "Are you sure about this?"

You take a breath.

Point of no return.

You nod, and spread your hands, palms up. A torrent of marbles leaps forth from your bag - closing on two thousand of them that settle into a steady orbit around you. And you let them decompress, expanding into a whorling, eddying cloud of deep purple covering the entire rooftop and then some in a slowly turning hurricane cloud that blots out the sun and stains what little sunlight that gets through purple. Mami's face looks strained, and even Kirika looks a little antsy, fingers curling into claws.

You can feel is Ishinomaki group freeze. The lone presence, the one you're guessing to be Akiko, halts for a moment, before resuming her run, now cutting at an angle towards you.

The Ishinomaki group seems to confer for a moment, and then... there's suddenly a fourth presence, beside them, one that bounds towards you while the three resume their chase. The new presence is... weaker. Less present.

"Is that fuckin' you?" Sakura's telepathic voice.

"Yeah," you reply. "Pulling them off Akiko."

"What the fuck," she says eloquently.

"Mami, Kirika, we have one girl coming in," you warn. "Kirika, hold back for now, your antimagic's our trump card, and we don't want them to know about it too early. Go for the disable."

"Aw," Kirika pouts. "Fine." A pair of wickedly sharp, obsidian black claws form on the back of her hands with a shimmer of light.

Mami nods, pressing her hands together and drawing them apart to reveal a musket between them.

For your part, you funnel the cloud down into your wings, midnight black swathes unfurling from your shoulders. The remainder you draw into smaller, drifting clouds that you leave drifting lazily through the air, loose enough to still be sensed, and you pull a warhammer from behind you.

Vwwp.

Your hammer comes up into a guard position, echoed by a click as Mami's rifle snaps up. Kirika snarls, bubbly cheeriness evaporating instantly.

Two very familiar presences materialize in front of you, one in a brown jacket, with a katana out, and the other in heavy, deep green robes, jagged daggers in her hands.

"Wait!" you call in alarm at Mami and Kirika. "I know them!"

"And you are fuckin' nuts," Sakura snaps at you. Rin wobbles faintly as Sakura releases her shoulder, while Mami and Kirika relax slightly.

You'd snap back, but that other girl's still approaching, fast. "Later," you tell her. "Incoming, there." You point.

Sakura nods, her anger fading into a grimace.

The new girl crests the neighbouring building, frilly yellow dress flaring out around her as she leaps. You see shock cross the girl's face.

You all tense again - with five puella magi here, this shouldn't be an issue.

Vwwp.

You hear the crack of shattering bone when Sakura appears behind the girl midair, and slams an overhead, axing kick into the girl's back.

The two begin to fall, and Sakura distorts again, disappearing.

Vwwp.

"What the FUCK!" It's your turn to round on Sakura, swearing, while Mami flinches, shock crossing her face at the sudden demise of the girl in yellow.

"She's a cloner," Sakura answers evenly.

In the distance, you can feel the three Ishinomaki girls halt midstep, conferring, before bounding off in another direction, away from you and Akiko both.

You snort, still glaring at the teleporter. "Fine. I'll let that one go, but from now on, no more of that bullshit. I'm here to stop a war, not leave a body trail. No killing. No severe injuries, unless we absolutely have to. Got it?"

The brunette stares at you. "The fuck? That was a bloody clone! I've popped, like three today!" she pauses for a moment, and amends with a smirk, "Four. And I thought you were bloody here to hel-" her eyes dart sideways to Rin, before she seems to think better of what she wanted to say.

You snort. "I'm here to stop a war," you repeat. "Anyway, hold that thought," you point past her, at the rooftop behind where you can sense Akiko closing on you.

The bluenette crests a nearby roof, dressed in what you will presume is her puella magi costume - a white jacket trimmed out in sky blue of a similar cut to Sakura's, albeit one suited to her more generous figure, over a short skirt in similar colours.

Akiko lands smoothly on the roof, giving the three of you a polite nod. "Miss Sabrina. Miss Tomoe. Miss...?"

"Kirika! Kure Kirika!" the black haired girl says brightly.

"Miss Kure," Akiko nods. "Thank you for the rescue. Might I ask what prompted this?"

"Not here. The Ishinomaki girls are..." you frown. They've left your range. "Running," you say lamely. "Sakura, can you teleport us out of here?"

Akiko holds up a hand, cutting off Sakura's instinctive denial. "Sakura, I think Miss Sabrina has the right idea. We should continue our discussions somewhere safe. Bring us to... Mitakihara?" The bluenette glances at you with a raised, eyebrow.

You shake your head. "No. I don't want Mitakihara in the line of fire."

Another delicate, deep blue eyebrow joins the first. Nevertheless, Akiko nods. "Somewhere... safer, then. Sakura?"

"Fine. Grab on," Sakura grunts, holding her arms out to you. "And don't fuckin' interrupt me when I'm charging." You nod, folding your Grief Wings down into marbles and packing away the loose ones. The five of you - yourself, Mami, Kirika, Akiko, and Rin, alternately grab onto Sakura.

Sakura closes her eyes, and concentrates. A gentle radiance ripples out from her Soul Gem to emcompass all of you, and then a moment later, you are-

Vwwp.

-elsewhere. Another rooftop, and a different skyline - Ishinomaki proper barely a grey blot in the distance. Sakura roughly shakes off your grips, fumbling in her pocket and withdrawing a Grief Seed even as she leans over, supporting herself with her free hand on her knees. Her breath comes in harsh gasps.

"I could-" you begin to offer, hand reaching towards her Soul Gem.

"Bugger off," the brunette says succinctly, pressing the Grief Seed to her Soul Gem.

Mami, standing beside you, frowns at the teleporter, folding her arms.

You fold your own arms. "Alright. So what the hell is actually going on? You girls went to Ishinomaki, and the next thing I hear, there's a war going on. What were the three of you doing in Ishinomaki?"

Akiko gives you an evaluating look. "Negotiations, and healing."

You narrow your eyes. "Then how did this start? Why were those girls after you?"

The bluenette shrugs. "They hold an... old grudge. I suspect that they orchestrated this entire thing."

"A grudge," you say skeptically, idly noting that she seems to be pinning the blame on Ishinomaki, rather than the University group.

"Yes, a fuckin' grudge," Sakura snaps at you. Rin, standing beside her, puts a calming hand on her shoulder, which Sakura shakes off with in an angry motion.

Kirika flexes her hands lightly, eyeing the teleporter warily, while Mami gives Akiko and Sakura both an equally unimpressed look. Rin... shrinks a little, eyes darting between all of you nervously.

Akiko closes her eyes, tilting her head back up at the sky. "We attempted to... aggressively acquire their territory, once."

"You tried to steal their city," you say flatly.

"Yes," Akiko admits.

"Hm," you say, glancing at Mami, who now sports a worried frown creasing her brow. "Leaving that aside... The University and Fukushima groups? Why are they involved?"

Akiko's eyebrows shoot up. "You are remarkably well informed."

"Not an answer," you tell her, feeling a moment of deja vu.

"I suspect the University group was convinced to do this by the Ishinomaki Group," she says. "And I called in a favour with the Fukushima group to help when it became clear that we were outnumbered."

"Alright," you continue. "What can you tell me about the University group? Leader, capabilities, that kind of thing?"

Akiko frowns. "There are four of them. Umeko Yuko, Tsubaki Chouko, Suzuki Rei and... Suzuki Haruna?"

"Haru," Rin supplies, looking up.

"Suzuki Haru," Akiko finishes.

"Four of them?" Mami asks. "Weren't there six of them?"

"One of them left," Akiko says. "The last one... died." She grimaces, looking away.

Remember, keep it civil!

"I'll be asking more about that later. But not in present company," you send to Akiko telepathically. Her expression shifts, subtly. Out loud, you ask, "So, what happened specifically? Rin-" bottle green eyes flick over to you "-was on her healing circuit? You were conducting negotiations for...?"

"I was there t-to heal another independent," Rin offers. "Kato Setsuko."

Akiko tilts her head to indicate agreement. "I don't know how much you've heard, Miss Sabrina, but Ishinomaki and us have... not been on the best of terms, in recent years."

"I heard about it," Mami says, voice forbidding. With her arms still folded, she directs a disapproving, regal frown upon Akiko, looking down upon her despite their nearly equal heights. "You've been fighting back and forth for... two years?"

Akiko's face tightens. "We have, yes."

Sakura's scowl deepens, too, and her grip tightens on her katana as she stares down Kirika. The black haired girl gives as good as she gets, an unblinking, citrine orange glare and a feral smirk displaying far too many teeth.

"So how does a negotiation and a healing turn into a fight?" you press.

"They claimed to be suing for a truce, but attacked me when I got there," Akiko says, as if it's the most obvious thing in the world, her lips curling into a scowl. "During the negotiations... which were presumably a feint."

"You went to them alone?" you ask, disbelief colouring your tone.

"I'm still here," the bluenette says, waving at herself. Utterly confident of herself... or at least pretending to be.

You snort. "Right. So. How many groups are involved, that you know of?"

Akiko frowns, looking away, and then back at you. "Ourselves, the University Group, Ishinomaki, Fukushima... and Mitakihara." She nods, seemingly to herself, and then looks at you again. "I've answered your questions, Miss Sabrina. Answer two of mine: What do you mean, that you want to stop a war? Why are you here?"

Turnabout.

You, glance away, looking over the very distant skyline of Ishinomaki, briefly debating revealing the source of your certainty, before deciding against it. Oriko probably wouldn't appreciate it, anyway.

Instead, you look back at the bluenette, arms still folded. "Do you really have to ask? This little-" you inject as much sarcasm into the word as you can "-has the potential to escalate to entire cities. Do you know you made the news last night, because someone's been throwing around earth magic?"

Akiko's mouth twitches to the side. "That's hardly my-"

"To answer your question," you cut her off with a sharp wave of your hand and raised voice, "We want to nip this in the bud before people, girls like us, and normals, get killed. We-" your wave includes Mami and Kirika, "are here to keep things from going to hell." Mami nods firmly, backing you up.

The bluenette raises an eyebrow. "In this to save lives, then?"

Rin's head twitches, looking at you, then at Akiko.

You shrug. "Yes. And I don't particularly like the idea of magical World War 2. Or 1. We especially don't like it when our city could get dragged into the shitstorm."

"It's not the first time we've... skirmished," Akiko says, with a dismissive wave of her hand, before softening it with a smile. "You're new, so... trust me when I say it's nothing so dramatic as a magical World War." She pauses. "I'm grateful - we all are, right, Sakura?- for your intervention, but it wasn't necessary," she adds in clarification. Rin nods fervently, while Sakura just grimaces, breaking the staring contest with Kirika and nodding.

"I'm sure Miss Tomoe can attest to that," Akiko continues, glancing at Mami.

Mami simply blinks lazily, half lidded gaze placid.

"Well..." Akiko says, seemingly slightly put off. "As I said, we are grateful for the save. If there's nothing else... I would like to take you up on the offer for... refreshing our Grief Seeds?" She glances aside at Sakura, and then back at you.

Hmmm.

"I'm aware that you've fought with Ishinomaki before, but honestly?" you shake your head. "This one's different. When I called this magical World War? I wasn't exaggerating that much. The University group's been in contact with one of the Tokyo groups... and they've been hunting for allies from other local groups since at least the previous year."

Mami shifts her weight slightly in response, but her face remains serene, her arms crossed as she stands at your shoulder.

A flash of... something flits across Akiko's face. Interest, maybe, or satisfaction. "That's... certainly interesting," she allows. ""

"In fact," you add, "I was under the impression that the University group are the... masterminds behind this entire affair."

Akiko shrugs, her expression tightening almost imperceptibly. "That's entirely possible," she says, inclining her head in acknowledgement. "I'm just guessing that it was Ishinomaki, in any case. Which means, either way, that I have some pointed questions to ask the University Group."

You almost grind your teeth in frustration. She's not listening. Or maybe she is, but just to stubborn to change.

"In any case, I am grateful for your help and information, and if we may impose on you a little more..." the bluenette says leadingly.

"Yes," you say. "I said I'd do it, so I will. But if you keep fighting when you don't have to, don't expect me to stick my neck out for you."

Akiko smiles, and dips her head in agreement. "Girls?" She withdraws a single, partially used Grief Seed from her pocket, as done Rin - one that you vaguely recognize in your Grief senses as the one you'd recycled earlier as a demonstration for Akiko.

You look at Sakura, who stares defiantly back at you, until Akiko pointedly clears her throat. Sakura mutters something darkly, and reluctantly pulls out three Grief Seeds, each seething with Grief.

With a careless wave of your hands, you have the Grief contained within the Seeds rippling free. You're careful to merely reduce the Seeds to a 'fresh' level, and not an iota beyond that - you still have no idea what's up with Hildegarde.

Sakura scowls at you, expression shifting between slight queasiness and raw dislike. Rin, on the other hand, gives you a quick smile, before it's subsumed back into the worried frown that she's been wearing the entire time.

"Thank you, Miss Sabrina," Akiko nods, looking at the renewed Grief Seed in her hand, before slipping it into her pocket. "And of course. You've already done alot, and we couldn't expect you to do anything more than what you've already done. In fact, I would say we owe you a favour for your help, even if it's freely given."

Sakura surprises you, speaking up. "We will... respect your request and... stay out of Mitakihara," she says, adopting formal tones distinctly at odds with her usual, crude modes of speech. The brunette glares defiantly at Akiko, daring her to contradict the statement.

Akiko frowns at her, eyes conveying a wordless 'we'll talk later' to the girl, before looking at you. "I... agree. We will stay out of Mitakihara, if we can."

Mami begins to nod slowly, before glancing quickly at you.

You glance at Sakura, the small motion enough to catch her eye. She meets your gaze, and scowls back at you. You smile, and give her a little nod of acknowledgement. The scowl deepens further, and she breaks the eye contact, gaze flickering to Rin, and then to Akiko.

Out of the corner of your eyes, you can see Rin fidget slightly, before folding her hands into the opposite sleeves of her voluminous over robe. Mami looks placidly unruffled, half smile on her face as she watches, content to defer to you, while Kirika, deprived of her staring partner is bouncing happily on her feet and staring off into the sky.

Finally, you return your regard back to Akiko.

"'If we can'?" you ask, airquoting the phrase before folding your arms again. "I'm sorry, but that isn't good enough. You will stay out of Mitakihara until the war is over. We can meet you somewhere else if we have to."

Akiko's eyes narrow. "Understandable," she says slowly. "Is there anything else?"

You nod. "Yes. You know full well that any escalation is risky," you say. "I'm not calling this in as a favour, but I'd... appreciate it if you were to hold back for some time. It's as much in your best interests to do so, anyway."

A touch of anger enters the bluenette's eyes. "Two of my girls are still under attack, and they might not need my help, but you want me to hold back?" she asks.

"No," you reply. "That's not what I mean, and you know it. But I am going to go and talk to the other side and end this. If they're reasonable, and they back down? I'm offering my services to them, too."

Akiko flinches minutely, the motion suppressed almost before it begins. "That is... less then well advised," she says carefully. "I understand that you want to-"

"I," you raise your voice to cut over hers. "Would like to try to be fair to everyone involved. It makes things easier to deescalate, in the longer run. But that is an ideal, and I'm very aware that ideals don't always translate into practical choices."

"Admirable," Akiko says, voice dry. "But-"

"I said that I wanted to end a war," you continue, ignoring her interruption. "And I meant it. I want to help everyone to end this war. And, Akiko-" you give her a flat, unamused look, holding her gaze with your own. "-I do mean everyone. I think it'll be... better that way."

Akiko opens her mouth, and then shuts it again, a displeased frown warring with stark amusement. Finally, her expression twists into a jagged, half-hearted smile. "I wish you the best of luck. Sakura, Rin?"

You look at the two Sendai girls as they move over to their leader. Rin gives you a worried smile, and wishes you a quiet, "Good luck," before visibly forcing an emotionless mask onto her face and grabbing Sakura's proffered hand.

Sakura... scowls at you, gripping Rin's hand on her left and Akiko's on her right. She frowns, focusing again, and you can feel the magic build up for another long teleport.

You have a split second to consider what to do next. But... Your lips flatten into a frustrated line as you watch Sakura focus on her teleportation. She's already started powering up, and... you could interrupt it, but it's not worth it. You could call for Homura's help... but it's not worth it, either.

So much for that line of inquiry, as it were... but they're not the only lead in you have. Not at this point, anyway.

Still, you don't want to simply let them go like this.

You send a quick telepathic message to Rin. "Hey. If things get out of hand, or if you need my assistance, just ask, OK?"

There's just enough time for her eyes to widen as she receives the message before Sakura's teleportation snatches the Sendai trio away, their bodies distorting into the distance.

Mami relaxes the moment they disappear, tension easing out of your shoulders. When you look at her, she smiles tentatively, and opens her arms in a silent offer of a hug. You accept it gladly, stepping into the hug, and wrapping your arms around her. In your Grief senses, you feel Kirika meander off to the other end of the roof.

"Why won't they listen," you mumble plaintively.

Mami sighs, warm breath puffing out strands of your hair.

"Oh, Sabrina..." she says quietly. "Sometimes... sometimes, people... make up their minds to do something, and they won't... listen to reason."

You sigh wearily. "It doesn't make it easier."

"No, it doesn't," Mami says. "But... I... I think you're doing something great, Sabrina. For... for what it's worth."

"It's worth a lot, Mami," you say, hugging her a little tighter.

She holds the hug for a while longer, then steps back, trailing her hands down your arms to grab your hands, and giving them a comforting squeeze. She's trying to be strong for you. "What's next, Sabrina?"

You give her a grateful smile, returning the squeeze. "I... was thinking we should check in with Oriko, and see what's changed?"

Mami nods. "OK," she says, gazing steadily at you.

"Oriko," you reach out telepathically for the seer.

"What," she says, mental voice sharp and irritated.

"Are you doing OK, there?" you ask, a hint of genuine concern entering your voice. You... don't exactly like her, even if she is adorable with Kirika and all, but still, if what you're doing is causing her debilitating headaches and Grief accumulation... "I know I've been changing a lot of things."

Speaking of Kirika, she's... lurking at the landing of the stairwell heading down from the roof, one citrine eye and half a grin peeking around the corner at you. She notices you looking, and the grin widens, the one visible eyebrow wagging up and down.

Mami twists, trying to see where you're looking, and promptly blushes, stepping back from you.

She keeps a hold on one of your hands, though.

Kirika looks disappointed.

"Yes, you have," Oriko snaps back at you. "Ask your questions so I can go to sleep."

... right.

"The University group?" you ask, deciding to include Mami in the call. She gives you a little smile in response.

"Fleeing the city in... seven hours," she replies. She pauses, and pre-empts your next question. "They make it out alive, but injured."

"And after that?" you ask. Mami tugs lightly at your hand, and you let her lead you over to the side of the roof, an area that happens to be out of sight of . She inspects the raised edge of the roof, and then sits down, patting the space beside her invitingly, while looking up at you. You return Mami's smile, and sit beside her.

"They are... joined by the Osaki group," Oriko replies, after another long pause.

"Hmm," you reply. "Thanks. Hey, if you need more Grief Seeds, you can ask Homura, OK? You can link me up if she doesn't want to."

"Noted," Oriko grunts. "Is there anything else?"

"Actually, yeah," you say. "What can you tell me-"

"-about the Osaki group," Oriko completes the sentence, biting off the words. "Three of them coming over, an empath, a healer, a... it's hard to describe. She can make things... hit extra hard. Nothing else, right." Despite the phrasing, it's really not a question.

"No," you say. "Have a nice nap, I guess."

No response, as Oriko immediately shuts off the connection. She'll probably be even tetchier if you wake her up, but it's not like you can't do that if you need to - goodness knows you've woken up Sayaka often enough.

Mami giggles a little. "Someone's grouchy," she says lightly.

"Yeah... I give her migraines, apparently," you say.

"I'm sure I have no idea why," Mami says.

You giggle in response. You can... pretend, for a moment, that the spectre of war isn't constantly looming over your head. "So, anyway," you say. "If... if we run into members of groups you know... would you like to handle the introductions?"

Mami brightens. "That's a good idea," she says. "I have a... reputation. Maybe it'll help?" She looks sheepish, and a little shy at the revelation. Not terribly used to outright bragging, even if it's true.

"Then it's settled," you smile.

"Are we going to Sendai?" Mami asks curiously. "Hmm... The girls from Ishinomaki... probably know of me, too," she adds, ducking her head with another sheepish smile.

Mmm.

"Back to Ishinomaki, I guess," you sigh, considering, and discarding, the possibility of heading over to Sendai. They... have a while, you hope, and... well, they're not dead by the end of that time. You'll take what you can get.

Mami glances over at the gleaming steel and glass monoliths of Ishinomaki in the distance. "OK," she says. "Are you sure? They saw us... with the Sendai group, after all..."

"Hmm..." you say, absently tucking your hair behind your ear as you think. "Not entirely, but we have to try. If not, this war will just keep building up..."

"Alright," Mami says, gazing steadily at you. "If you think we need to."

You raise your voice. "Kirika?"

The black haired girl bounces out from the stairwell, grinning brightly at you. "Here!"

"OK, so," you say, addressing both Kirika and Mami. "We're going back to Ishinomaki, to see if we can't talk the girls there down."

"Got it," Kirika says, as she meanders over to join you at the edge of the roof, sitting beside you... in the other direction, fearlessly kicking her feet out over the ten storey drop below.

"Hm... Mami, could you make a truce flag or something?" you ask.

"Of course," she nods, holding out one hand. You watch in fascination as a mass of ribbons bloom into existence, twirling themselves around an invisible rod before solidifying into a solid, meter long pole. More ribbons weave themselves together, unfurling into a golden flag.

Mami frowns for a moment, and the flag changes colour to a pure, shimmering white.

She holds it up for your inspection with an uncertain smile. The flag waves gently on an unfelt wind, in defiance of the dead, still air around you - animated by magic. Heh.

"Perfect," you smile back at her, and in return, the smile on Mami's face blossoms into something more natural.

"OK, so," you say, twisting to look at Kirika, making sure she's paying attention. She schools her face into impassive attention, as if to say, 'see, I can be serious too,' before letting it dissolve into a fanged grin. You continue. "We need to try and avoid hostilities... I want to talk to them."

"Gotcha," Kirika agrees.

"OK," Mami says.

"Then I guess we're going, then," you say, standing and offering a hand to Mami. She accepts it with a smile, and you pull her up. Kirika twists away from the edge of the roof, and bounces lightly to her feet

A gesture with your free hand has marbles leaping from your bag by the dozens to build themselves into a carpet.

The three of you board, and set off to Ishinomaki proper, the wind rushing through your hair. Mami at your side, Kirika behind you...

"How are you feeling?" Mami asks you.

"OK, I guess. Annoyed and frustrated, still thinking about what to do next... how to handle the Ishinomaki girls," you respond.

Mami sighs, the sound lost over the rushing wind, but you can feel it in the rise and fall of her shoulder against yours. "I'm sure you'll figure something out," she says reassuringly. "I mean, you helped Masami, right? And you made Homura... human."

"Yeah," you agree. You can't point out that you had the benefit of... knowing Homura, and being uniquely positioned to help her.

"You helped me," Mami says, looking at you.

"... thanks, Mami," you say.

It doesn't take you too long to reach Ishinomaki proper, coming up to that park on a hill again. Under the afternoon sun, the tang of salt is heavy in the air, as you bank, and begin to look for the local magical girls, settling into a smooth, steady spiral outwards. You take no particular pains to hide your presence, cruising steadily along.

Four... five presences, on the very edges of your senses.

"Found 'em," you say announce to Mami and Kirika, pointing. They're out of sight, in the dense concrete and steel and glass jungle of the city, but you're rapidly gaining height.

Mami nods, and stands. She raises the flag from its position leaning against her shoulder, and begins to wave it overhead in grand, sweeping gestures, the swathe of shimmering white unmistakeable in the air. Kirika also bounces to her feet, a wide, fanged grin on her face, claws already summoned to her hands.

Feeling a little silly at being the only one sitting, you stand alongside them, schooling your face into an impassive mask as you round the last building.

Your first warning is the buildup of magic in one of the girls.

The second is the greasy, slick feeling of your hair rising.

"They-" you begin to warn. Kirika and Mami are already moving.

Thunder.

A blazing strobe of light burns a white bar into your eyesight, an enormous spot of blues and greens and painful red seared into your retinas. Your eyes tear up instinctively - but you don't have to.

You force the tears back. You force your eyes to work. You spread your senses wide, and find Kirika crouched in front, ebullient grin gone and black claws crossed in front of her. Buzzing sparks crawl over her claws where she intercepted the lightning, crackling streamers that spit and arc across the jagged implements.

Mami stands proud beside her, flag still in one hand, while ribbons flow from her other hand, forming a loose, protective wall.

You halt the carpet, in view of the five forms on the distant rooftop.

You can feel another burst of magic building up.

Five becomes six, then seven. Three of the forms on the roof break left, leaving four behind.

This time, you're ready for it. A sweep of your hands has marbles cascading out of your bag to coalesce into an enormous barrier of Grief, a deep purple shield hovering in front of you. Mami's ribbons ripple forward, while Kirika tenses to take the blow, baring her teeth.

The titanic lightning bolt splashes against your shield, thunder booming again. Fat, vicious sparks snap and strike across the shield as you tear it apart again into a cloud of Grief that you leave hazing the air between you and the Ishinomaki girls.

Three magical girls - two clones, one real, on the building to your left.

All three leap at you.

"Left!" you bark, bringing your Grief cloud around - Kirika and Mami are already reacting. The berserker leaps, shaking the carpet with the force of her jump. Golden ribbons blossom, streaking viper fast across the distance to snatch at the incoming magical girls - two in familiar, frilly yellow dresses, short swords in their hands, and one more in garishly ornate, bright purple armour.

Kirika slams into the girl in purple, the two of them spinning and crashing back to the roof, tumbling and rolling across the rooftop.

Mami's ribbons spin into cocoons around the two clones - which promptly vanish, reappearing next to their creator, still on the distant roof.

There's a sharp snapping noise, and Kirika is hurled back from the girl in purple with a cry, tumbling back nearly to the edge of the roof. The girl in purple drops into a crouch, heavy gauntlets visibly glowing. Kirika rolls to her feet, claws extended as she squares off with the girl.

You can feel the Ishinomaki girls splitting up to surround you.

Yeah, if anyone's wondering, my exams are coming up. What writing I'm doing is in between studying.

"Non-lethal!" you roar, putting your diaphragm into the shout. The words ring out over the buildings, as much to remind Kirika as it is for the Ishinomaki group's benefit. You look around.

Kirika, on the left, springing forward to clash with the girl in purple armour again. Claws ring against gauntlets and score off heavy armour. She's fast, almost a blur to your eyes as she twists and waves and snarls, not letting herself get tagged by her opponent again. She learned her lesson the first time, whatever that girl's magic did.

Two girls on your right, flickering motions in the corner of your eye as they bound across the rooftops. They're staying out of your line of sight.

Smart, but not good enough. You track them unerringly in your Grief senses, feeling the heights of the buildings as they land and push off again.

Three circling behind you, bounding across rooftops. Two clones, there.

One more, her form blurry even in your other sense, moving to join the brawl with Kirika. Again, smart.

Again, not good enough.

You and Mami standing shoulder to shoulder on your carpet, drifting slowly in the middle of the buildings.

The white flag's gone now, a musket held lightly against her right shoulder, a hard, implacable look on her face as she watches warily.

You take a step, shifting back to back with Mami. A silver warhammer forms in your right hand, and around the two of you draws the loose Grief into a slow orbit. A defensive screen, one that thrums unsettlingly in your senses, and one that could become all too lethal at a whim. A feeling you've long gotten used to.

Mami's tight grin, conveying worry and firm assurance in the same contradictory expression. Your own answering smile, shot over your shoulder with a half turned head.

We'll be fine.

Two dozen Grief marbles slam down on the girl darting over to Kirika's fight, webbing out into a net crushing down on her. The girl shudders, and sheds. An outer layer melts off, leaving a smaller, lighter form dancing away from the amorphous, tangling mass of threads you morphed your Grief into.

Huh.

You keep at it, a fraction of your attention on preventing that girl from turning Kirika's fight into a two versus one. It doesn't take much. She seems to be afraid of the mass of Grief hanging motionlessly in front of her. Or perhaps wary would be a better word. She jukes left, and stops when you shift the mass to match, making it rotate in on itself in eyebending geometric impossibility.

Then something, something you can't see in your Grief senses, slams into the Grief. It rocks to the side, and in that moment, the girl bounds past it. The Grief zips after her, tangling in her legs, only for her to kick it free, scraping off another layer.

"They're coming," Mami warns, and you nod. Really, you should have given that warning - you've been tracking the girls. All of them are crouched to leap, or poised to attack.

Without any further warning, Mami levels her musket and fires in a single smooth motion. The shot booms out, exploding into a mass of ribbons midfight, intercepting a girl - wearing what's almost an armoured bodysuit in silver and fluorescent green - just as she bounces into sight. The ribbons weave into an intricate cocoon that wraps around the girl and snaps her back to the rooftop like a bungee cord.

And Mami did that without seeing the girl before she jumped.

One girl raises her clenched fist to the sky, and another white-hot bolt of lightning roars down at you.

You're ready for it. Lightning splashes against an flash formed shield of Grief, crackling and spitting and expending itself in a futile show of flash and fury.

Mami spins around you, footwork light and dancing across the carpet. A new musket forms in her hand, the spent one falling away and dissolving into ribbons. You move in counterpoint to Mami, gesturing grandly with both hands as you direct the defensive screens.

A clone, in that same frilly yellow dress with a bladed halberd in hand. She smashes feet first into a plate of Grief, slamming a massive blow into the plate with her halberd with a sound not unlike slabs of lead impacting cement. The plate doesn't yield. The clone vanishes in a burst of yellow light, reappearing next to its creator. A probing strike, then.

Behind you, Mami's rifle booms out another shot.

You spare a glance for Kirika's fight - a reverberating clash of magically forged metal on metal, now joined by a hulking figure in grey. That gives you pause for a moment. The juggernaut moves as swiftly as any magical girl despite the bulk... and as it turns, you spy a pale oval of flesh amidst the stone. The geokinetic, the earthbender, wrapped in a suit of concrete.

A snake-fast strike with your zipping mass of Grief, tangling and twisting their legs to foul them. Kirika's on purple-girl in a flash, hammering an elbow at the girl's face in a vicious, hooking motion that snaps her head back. The earthbender girl powers through the Grief, concrete-gauntleted hands swinging through one-two jabs Kirika twists adroitly away from.

The girl in silver and green rips free of the cocoon of ribbons. A silver disc a meter across flashes into existence beneath her, and she drops onto it. A small sphere forms in her hand, accompanied by a prismatic spray of square, almost two dimensional particles. Without hesitation, she lobs it at you, face drawn into a frown, and then another.

"Moving!" you send to Mami in warning. She crouches slightly, and you jerk the carpet upwards just in time to avoid the orbs - which swerve upwards and slam into the bottom of your carpet, detonating in rippling blasts of the same prismatic pixelation. The solidified Grief sheds the explosions with aplomb.

You feel Mami tense behind you, and you've fought with her enough to know what she's doing. You spin across the carpet as she leaps, and you follow. The carpet collapses behind you, streaming into the wings of corruption which explode out from your shoulder.

The wings pump, and you slam into the building beside Mami, already dancing with ribbon and musket in a dense melee against silver pistols spitting pixelated green beams.

A whisper of your attention, and a band of Grief snags around purple-girl's wrist as she rears up behind Kirika. You yank, and she staggers, before slamming her other hand into the band and blasting it off with a pulse of magic. The same thing that threw Kirika earlier?

You frown, and the Grief swerves back to join the larger mass twisting and writhing to interfere with them, preventing the two girls from tag teaming Kirika effectively.

More present worries. Miss Clones freed herself, and three of her are squaring off against you. Miss Lightning darting in behind you, hands crackling with lightning she's too afraid to throw for fear of hitting her ally.

Halberd rings against your hammer, hard enough to buckle your wrist. A second halberd sweeps a blow that'd bisect you if it hits, and you meet it with a shielding screen of Grief. You jump back - three against one is a losing proposition unless you cut loose. And you're not doing that yet.

You whirl away. A flick of your hand, a flick of your attention, and a tendril of Grief licks out to hook Mami's opponent. The silver-and-green clad girl trips, and finds herself bound in ribbons for the second time. This time, a padlock the size of double clenched fists put together forms, slamming shut with a very final click. Less a physical lock and more a declaration of magical intent.

You complete the spin, leading with your hammer just in time to smack Miss Lightning's hands away. You jab with the head of your hammer, slamming it into her stomach. Her breath leaves her in a surprised whoosh, as pink eyes framed by lavender hair glare at you.

Clone behind you. You sidestep swiftly, and yet still too slow. One of those bladed halberds score a line of fire across your side. You ignore it, forcing the pain aside, and step backwards, leading with your elbow and twisting on your waist. A nasty crunch of breaking cartilage - the clone's nose. It vanishes, and another one flashes into existence.

Those clones are a problem.

Kirika... Kirika is still fighting her duel against the two brawlers.

Mami catches your glance. "Move?"

"Lure," you respond. Which had always been the idea, but... plans, and contact with the enemy. Dodge. You move in concert with Mami, and another lightning bolt sizzles past the both of your to blast a crater out of the rooftop. "Kirika!"

She responds with a snarled, "Stupid armour!"

"Can you get them over here? Then hit everyone but us with antimagic?" you ask, slamming the flat of your hammer against a forearm, weaving around a grasping hand crackling with purple sparks of electricity. The smell of ozone fills your nostrils as another hand sizzles past your face, close enough to crisp the ends of your hair.

Kirika plants her hands on the rooftop and her feet into the midsection of Miss Earthbender in a flipping kick that actually shatters concrete and lifts the girl into the air. Impossibly fast, Kirika rubberbands back upright and bounds into the air on a ballistic arc for your roof, leaving behind a tangled pile of heavily armoured girls.

She crashes to the roof and immediately joins your offensive against Miss Lightning. She catches a blow on her claws, smirking as the lightning expends itself fruitlessly on the gleaming black metal. You nod, and dart away to join Mami in fighting the cloner - she's trying to get to the silver-and-green girl.

You barrel into the back of one of the clones, warhammer flicking out to hook her leg and slam her facefirst into the rooftop with your weight behind her. The clone vanishes with that frustrating blaze of yellow light and reappears, fresh. You roll to your feet again, and glare at the originator of the clones.

Mami's muskets boom out another shot, and the cloner's forced to dodge away from a mass of embracing ribbons.

Another loud crash of concrete and boots on the rooftop - Kirika's foes landing behind you.

The rolling crush of Kirika's antimagic, looming and bearing down on all of you like an enormous tsunami. And yet... this time, it passes you by harmlessly.

Magic grinds to a halt.

The two clones waver and vanish like so much mist in the sunlight. Miss Earthbender seizes up, concrete locking around her. The crackling corona of lightning and the ominous purple glow winks out.

Nothing much happens to the girl already trussed up in ribbons.

You clap your hands together, letting your warhammer clang to the rooftop.

Sharp tugs all around - Grief Seeds flying free of pockets and clouds of Grief billowing into the air all around, a deep purple pall resonating in your senses shrouding the air.

You squeeze your hands together, interlacing your fingers into clasped fists, and Grief crushes down into bindings around all the girls, around their hands and feet and waists to immobilize them. Earthbender girl is trickier - a flurry of slicing Grief blades has the concrete armour in shredded, faintly glowing leavings on the roof before the girl before the bindings slam home.

Kirika drops to her knee beside the form of Miss Clones, claws ready to strike and lips peeled back in a bubbling snarl.

The magic distortion passes.

And you breathe.

You sweep your gaze around the rooftop. Scorched craters blown out of the the roof, shattered concrete, three girls bound securely, one thrashing in her bonds, and one frozen in terror at the spectre of Kirika with claws raised in threat. One bound in ribbons, the others in Grief immobilizing their hands and arms and feet. Their Grief seeds drifting in a slow constellation around the rooftop.

Finally, you meet Mami's gaze, and smile triumphantly, a look which she returns, relief and happiness that you won, coloured by a little worry when she spies the gash in your side.

You glare at the girls on the roof. A twitch of your attention jerks them upright to face you - you let them stand in a row in front of you, but the manacles keep them from moving. A twitch of Mami's fingers has silver-and-green girl standing, too. "Seriously?" you roar. "Did you not see the truce flag? We are not your enemy! We just want to talk!"

Silence, as Mami joins you at your side, lightly touching your shoulder with her hand.

Looks pass between the girls - telepathic communication you let play out. The girl in purple is beginning to tremble in her bindings, wide eyes darting from side to side.

Silver-and-green girl looks up, meeting your gaze. "Release Hoshiko," she demands, deadly serious. "You say you're here in peace. Release her."

So, for the negotiations, let's try something different - don't give me specific wordings save for the important parts. Just give me an overview of points to be covered, and the tone you want to take, that kind of thing.

"Hoshiko being Purple?" you ask, tilting your head at the girl trembling in her bonds.

"Yes!" Silver-and-Blue, the geokinetic, snaps, teeth gritted as she glares at you.

You shrug. Hoshiko's stares pleadingly at you, shaking in the bindings. You grimace, and a careless wave of your hands dissolves the manacles and drops her to her feet, where she hunches over, hugging herself tightly.

"... thank you," Silver-and-green says, surprise and relief mixing in her tone. Silver-and-blue, the geokinetic -some familial resemblance there?- relaxes noticeably, some tension bleeding out of her body.

"I am here to talk, events notwithstanding," you say evenly. Another casual sweep of your hands wipes the Grief from your own, Mami's, and Kirika's Gems in an equally casual display of your power that had loose Grief billowing into the air to join the diffuse cloud already occluding the sun. The light filtering through casts the scene in an eerie, dappled purple.

It's not a display that goes unnoticed, either. You observe their reactions, and their levels of corruption, with your mundane and your extraordinary senses. Silver-and-green girl looks, first at you, then at Miss Sparky. Their eyes flick to the Grief Seeds, still orbiting like distant stars in a nebula of Grief, and then lock on each other's again. Miss Earthbender's eyes go wide, and her gaze darts between the Grief leaving the Gems, and the masses drifting lazily in the air.

Clone-girl doesn't seem to be paying you much mind; her attention still fixed on Kirika. The black haired girl's backed off a little, but is still poised to leap, muscles tightly strung in readiness.

Purple-girl looks up from her little huddle, her face twisting into confusion as she sees the last of the Grief leaving your Gem, before the thought fully percolates through her brain, and she, too, stares in shock.

Mami just gives you a warm smile, while Kirika opts to keep a wary eye on the clone-girl.

"Right," you say, folding your arms behind you. Now that you've given a very stark demonstration of what you can do... "I'm actually willing to let you all down. So long as you don't run away. And stop attacking us, of course."

Another lightning fast exchange of puzzled looks and mental communication.

"That would be good...?" Silver-and-green says.

"Do you agree to hear us out?" you reply evenly.

"Yes," she answers.

"OK then," you say simply, and release them from their bonds. Their Grief Seeds pull out of their orbits as you replace the bits of Grief you tore free, hanging motionless in front of their owners. Kirika, taking the hint, backs up to stand beside you, on the opposite from Mami.

The Ishinomaki girls look at once uncomfortable, baffled, and vaguely apprehensive. Hesitantly, looking at it as if it's going to bite her, Silver-and-Green reaches out to pluck one of the Grief Seeds hovering in the air in front of her. You let it drop into her hand at the gentle tug, and she flinches, almost dropping it.

"So," you say. "This is Tomoe Mami-" something that might be recognition of that name flits across Yuuki's face, "-and Kure Kirika. I'm Sabrina... just Sabrina. We're here from Mitakihara." You gesture at Mami and Kirika in turn as you speak, and Mami nods regally, while Kirika shakes her head in a sharp jerk as if she's trying to chase off an irritating fly.

Silver-and-Green nods slowly, carefully pocketing the Grief Seed. "Uh. This is Koizumi Aki-" she waves at the cloner-girl, in her yellow, aggressively frilly dress. Tired, yellowish-brown eyes, shaded by a heavy frown, regard you.

"-Sato Kimiko-" A gesture at the lightning thrower, in her ruffled dress of lavender purple and white and pink, similar to the lighting she throws. Pink eyes look warily at you.

"-Tsukada Hoshiko-" The girl in her ornate plate armour of bright, vivid purple, trimmed out in a lighter, silvery metal in elaborate filigree. Unreasonably sized pauldrons cap her shoulders, and her heavy plate gauntlets hang loosely at her side, fingers still trembling slightly.

"-Inoue Yuuna-" Here, Silver-and-Green hesitates slightly as she waves at the girl in silver and blue. There's definitely some familial resemblance there, you note. Something about their cheekbones, the shape around their eyes... Even their costumes have... remarkably similar patterns of light, carapace-like armour over an underlayer, blue in her case.

"-and I am Inoue Yuuki," she finishes.

Mami inclines her head regally. "Nice to meet you," she says, tone imperious. You nod your agreement.

"So, then," you say. "Will you hear us out now?"

Confusion crosses their faces again, and Miss Silver-and-Green -Yuuki- speaks up. "I suppose so...?"

"Good." You nod sharply. "Then, quite simply. We're here to talk. Not here to fight, for Sendai, Ishinomaki, or even for Mitakihara per se. We want an end to the hostilies. On both sides."

You raise a finger. "As a gesture of good faith, I'm willing to refresh your Grief Seeds. As I demonstrated, I'm perfectly capable of doing that."

Some days, you wish that the weather would cooperate for once. A roll of thunder or a gust of wind to set your coat billowing dramatically would be awfully welcome. You don't even wear glasses that can catch the light to become shiny and intimidating, dammit.

Yuuki frowns. "You... do know why we're fighting, right?"

"Not completely," you say, cocking your head to the side, and favouring the Ishinomaki group with a raised eyebrow. "I would quite like to get your side of the story. I've heard Sendai's, of course."

Yuuki glances at Yuuka, and then back at you. "What's to tell? Chouko... ah... Tsubaki Chouko, from the University group comes and asks if we want to help put down the Sendai group. We agreed, of course, so we drop an ambush on Hamasaki-" the lines around her eyes tighten on the mention of the name "-when she came by."

"She claims she was here to broker a truce," you observe.

She rolls her eyes. "You believe that? You've met her, haven't you?"

On the fringes of your senses, you can feel another two magical presences moving in by roofhopping. They're moving slowly, warily, but indisputably heading in towards you.

Random fact of the day: Electrical discharge in air tends to be purple and white with hints of pink, not yellow. For example one a long discharge from a tesla coil. Not one of mine.

You frown. Two more puella magi, not exactly sneaking along the edges of your perception... But yes, definitely heading in towards you. Independents, maybe, or another two of the Ishinomaki group? You decide to ask; better not to assume.

"Not to change the topic, but there's two more magical girls approaching us," you note, eyeing Yuuki warily. "Anyone you know?"

Surprise flickers across the girl's face, chased by minor shame. "Um... yes."

"Yours?" you ask.

"Yes," she says.

You raise an eyebrow at that. Probably setting up a contingency, just in case? Not... unreasonable, you guess. You wave your hands airily. "Eh... ask them to join us, then? I'm here for a discussion, not a fight."

Yuuki nods relucantly. "Very well."

The two presences jerk, and then begin moving more normally - well, normally for a puella magi, anyway.

As you wait, you note Kimiko nudging Hoshiko, murmuring quietly to her. Hoshiko nods jerkily, and gropes around in her armour before locating a Grief Seed and pressing it to her Soul Gem, siphoning off the accumulated patina of Grief.

The last two members soon arrive, bounding over the rooftops to join the group already here - one in a dress absolutely festooned with ribbons, with a long, orange braid of hair flapping after her.

The other's in a far more sedate costume of blacks and greys, one vaguely similar to Kyouko's - predominantly white, trimmed out with in black, and open in the front to reveal a white shirt and skirt combination, and a grey scarf wound around her neck. A large round hat, with a small ribbon sticking out of it, sits atop a neat bob of black hair.

You let the cloud of Grief drift free of their path of approach, and they do so, eyeing it warily. The one in black seems to recognize Mami, eyes widening in surprise. Mami's gaze similarly shifts over, and surprise mirrors itself on her face, too, before it shifts through regret to settle on a harder, wary look.

... with ten people, seven of whom are more than a little uneasy, on this rooftop, it's beginning to feel a little crowded.

Yuuki glances at you. "This is Ueda Miyako, and Kagome Ayaka," she says. "Miyako, Ayaka, this is Miss Sabrina, Tomoe Mami, and Kure Kirika. They're, ah, here from Mitakihara."

"Hello," you nod at the newcomers. Mami edges closer to you, chin tilting up as she focuses on Miss Ribbons, Miyako. Her hand touches lightly against your elbow. You can feel Ayaka's eyes lingering on that.

"So," you say. "What exactly has Hamasaki done?"

"You don't know?" Yuuki asks in faint disbelief.

"I'm just trying to get a fuller story," you say. You cup both hands and hold them up, weighing one against the other, before spreading your hands demonstratively. "I've got one side of the story. I'd like to know the others."

"That's... fair," Yuuki allows, brow still knotted.

"So..." you say leadingly.

"Let me think," she says, scowling. After a moment's thought, she starts, "OK, look, this goes back... two years ago?" she glances questioningly at the cloner, Aki, who shrugs back at her. "Or... Aki. Why don't you or Kimiko tell the story? Or Ayaka? You were there."

Aki grimaces, but nods, and steps forward. "Somewhere around there, I guess. So there's this big fight or something, I don't know, in the Sendai girls. Whatever. Result is, one of them dies or something, and another one, Kato, I think her name was, leaves them." Her voice is a little raspy.

"Ah!" Mami says. "Kato Setsuko?"

Aki shrugs indifferently. "Sounds about correct. And yeah, she probably passed through Mitakihara?" At Mami's nod, she continues. "She passes through Ishinomaki, too," she says, waving to emcompass the city. "We... well, I think we were nice to her. There were four of us, back then."

"Five," Ayaka corrects the cloner.

"Whatever. Point is, we asked if she wanted to stay. She didn't, we let her hunt a Witch, and pass through," Aki says.

"Right..." you nod.

"Thing is, a month later, Hamasaki and her cronies come screaming at us about her," Aki says. "Said we killed her, and they tried to kill us." Her face flattens into blankness. Similar expressions, blank looks and grimaces, echo across Kimiko and Ayaka's faces. "We win."

"I see," you say.

"We... were willing to let... bygones be bygones," Aki says. "But... eh." She shrugs again, and makes a 'what can you do' gesture.

"And so an 'of course' for starting a turf war?" you ask.

"It's not a turf war," Yuuki corrects. "Or... I guess it is for the University group. Like, the Sendai girls? They're don't exactly go easy on them," Yuuki says. "They're... 'allowed' to exist in Sendai, right?" The girl's tone makes it very clear precisely what she means. "For a 'rental fee', the way I hear it. So the University Group have been trying to get out from under them for a while." Lightly armoured shoulders rise and fall in a shrug. "So they look for help, and got it."

"I see," you repeat.

Bleh, infodump. And exams.

You purse your lips and cup your chin, turning over the revelations. There's some uneasy shifting amongst the Ishinomaki girls as you do so, and you try to observe their reactions without being too obvious about it. There's more than a few wary glances towards the free floating Grief you still having drifting about, and the wings still billowing over your shoulders.

Mami stands placidly at your side, hands folded firmly across her chest and half lidded gaze sweeping across the Ishinomaki girls.

Kirika's bouncing happily on the balls of her feet, tapping her claws together with little ting noises. One-two-three, one-two-three...

"Hmm..." you shake errant thoughts of flocks of invading Incubators from your mind, and glance around at the Ishinomaki girls. "OK, look. I know that you won't have all the answers to my questions, but frankly, every bit helps. What can you tell me about Miss Kato? Why did she leave Sendai, what happened to her and so on?"

A sudden plague of shrugs strikes the trio you tentatively identify as the veterans of the Ishinomaki group - Aki, Kimiko, and Ayaka. they look around at each other, and Aki speaks up. "Dunno. You realize this was a long time ago, yeah? And we really only talked to her a little bit."

"Actually..." Kimiko says slowly. "You remember when we were asking if she wanted to join us?"

Aki shrugs again. "Nope. You just remember 'cuz she was pretty, don't you?"

"You know it," Kimiko agrees.

You cough lightly, drawing attention back to you.

"Aaaaaaaaaanyway," the lavender-haired girl says. "She said something about running from memories and stuff. Dunno what those memories were, but yeah. Something big happened back in Sendai."

You nod. "Thanks for that," you say. "Do you know why Miss Hamasaki would lash out like she did? Was she just an excuse or something?"

"Doubt Hamasaki thought she was pretty enough to start a war over," Kimiko shrugs.

That'd be a no, then. You'd expected as much. Next question, then... "What did she do, anyway? Come to that, what was she here for, today? If she wasn't here for negotiations...?"

Yuuki's lip curls. "I dunno. She called for a meeting, right, so I figured we should be the bigger person and agree. But then when we find her here early, skulking about and her two friends also skulking about... Like, wouldn't be the first time she's set up an ambush," she says, frowning.

"Sooooooo it sounds like you guys attacked first?" Kirika pipes up, grin exposing her fang.

Yuuki's face hardens. "We did," she says. "If you were where we are, you would too."

Kirika merely grins and shrugs, still bouncing on her feet.

Mami tugs lightly at your elbow, and you turn to look at her. A small, troubled frown mars her face. "Sabrina, didn't Miss Mori say that she was here to heal a Kato Setsuko, too? I thought maybe it was just a coincidence, but..."

You frown equally. Now that she mentions it... "You met... a Kato Setsuko before, right?"

"I did, yes, she passed through Mitakihara about two years ago," Mami says. "She didn't want to stay..." she trails off, looking crestfallen.

You lightly touch your hand to Mami's arm, and smile reassuringly at her. "Do I need to tell you how wonderful you are again, Mami? Because I will."

She gives you a quick, grateful smile. "No... I was just thinking... she was troubled, I think, is the best word to describe her."

"Hmm..." you say, glancing sidelong at the Ishinomaki girls, who are, by the looks of things, conducting their own telepathic conversations. Ayaka happens to be looking, too, her eyes rising from your hand on Mami's elbow to meet your gaze. "Do you think it's just a coincidence, or are Sendai or Ishinomaki lying?"

"I think it's Sendai," Mami says. "I don't... think much of Miss Hamasaki's conduct."

"Hm," you repeat, and look back up at the Ishinomaki girls. "Are you aware of any independents living in Ishinomaki?"

"Yes?" Yuuki says. "Why?"

"Rin... uh, that's Mori Rin, one of the Sendai group, said she was here to heal one of the independents."

Yuuki cocks her head to the side. "That so? Hold up a minute..."

"Hey, Nakano," Yuuki's voice sounds in your head. "Did you need healing?"

"No, why?" an unfamiliar voice replies.

"Just checking," Yuuki replies, breaking off the call. She shrugs at you. "There you go, then."

"And she's the only independent in the city?" you ask.

"Yep," she says. "Unless someone popped up in the last day or so."

"Alright, then," you nod, exchanging a look with Mami. Sendai's lying. Rin was lying... Or herself misled. "Well. We don't particularly condone what the Sendai group is up to... But I want this entire thing over. It's not going to turn out well if it keeps escalating like it is. I... look. You guys have your issues with the Sendai group, I understand that. But if we can guarantee that they won't come after you, would you agree to help end this?"

"You... you've dealt with Hamasaki before, haven't you?" Yuuki asks, rolling her eyes. "You can't guarantee that. But yeah, I get what you're saying." She flaps a hand at you. "If you can actu-"

"No," Aki grinds out. "I want to see her dea- No, actually, you know what. Fuck her shit. If she stops coming after us, I'm happy."

"Right," you nod. "So we're agreed, then?"

"If." Yuuki raises a finger. "It's a fairly big if. We've beaten the tar out of them before, and she still came back for another go. At this point, I really don't know why or what she expects, but she did. So..."

You nod again, conceding that. Silence falls for a moment.

"Y'know, I don't get you girls," Yuuki observes conversationally. "You in particular, Miss Sabrina. You come here, we, ah, attack you, you beat the hell out of us-" she gestures around at her group, prompting little cringes, "-and then you talk to us and then... you're done. Like, what the hell, girl?"

Mami answers for you. "That's because Sabrina wants to," she says, iron conviction in her tone and a warm, proud smile blossoming on her face as she glances at you. "She wants to help. And she can."

You redden in embarassment, but forge onwards. "And, uh. Not to... deliberately try and prove the point, but I've got one more thing to say... I can cleanse Soul Gems and Grief Seeds alike, and I'm willing to offer my services. Free of charge. After all this is over."

Looks of surprise, followed by darting glances at each other spread amongst the Ishinomaki girls. "Uh," Yuuki says, finally. "OK."

More awkward silence.

"Hey," an unfamiliar voice sounds in your head, and you see Ayaka looking directly at you. The black haired girl gives you a serious look. "You're staying with Mami, right?" At your nod, she continues, "Treat Mami properly, got that? I mean, I've... got my differences with her, but... I can see what you mean to her."

"Yeah, I know," you reply. "I know damned well."

"Good," she says, seemingly satisfied.

Yuuki shakes her head. "So. Is there anything else, or may we leave?" she asks.

=====

I was wondering whether anyone would pick up on the Setsuko thing before Mami. :V

Also, whooo! Exams are done!

You contemplate the bewildering array of information that's been presented to you - by Akiko, by Yuuki, by Aki... And really, the only conclusion you can draw is that something stinks. Someone, maybe more than someone, is lying, lying hard, and you're not sure who. Little contradictions everywhere.

"Yeah, actually. A few more things," you say slowly. "First... really two years of skirmishing over one girl? I mean, Mitakihara is closer to them than Ishinomaki, until recently, was... less well defended," you ask, barely-faked bewilderment in your voice. You are rather baffled, after all.

"Not hardly, with Tomoe Mami there," Aki says, jerking her chin at Mami. Ayaka looks chagrined at that, glancing away.

"More to the point," Yuuki says. "We don't really know."

"Yeah," Aki agrees, sobering. "Like, that's what she was screaming the first time, right? But why she keeps coming back?" She shrugs.

"You said that Sendai arrived early? When, exactly, were the negotiations supposed to take place?"

"Today," Yuuki replies. "Why?"

"No... Just thinking," You shake your head. "Nothing else... I guess we're pretty much done here. Oh, wait-" you glance at Mami and Kirika. "Anything you want to know?"

Mami shakes her head, honey blonde coils bouncing. "Nothing I can think of," she says.

"Nope," Kirika says.

"Oh, sorry," you say, a thought striking you. "One more thing. We're... probably going to go try talk to the University Group right now. Is there any chance you can contact them and ask them to pull out to meet us?"

Yuuki raises an eyebrow at you. "Ask them to meet you? Sure, I can do that," she says. "Ask them to pull out? Would you pull out of your home city?"

"Uh, not what I meant," you amend hastily. "I mean, retreat from Sendai, to talk to us?"

She frowns. "Still no. Like, you're fighting for your life, and someone asks you to stop, to talk? Just... go interrupt them or whatever. Like, you've got experience doing that." She waves at herself and her group.

"... Yeah, that's fair enough, I guess," you say. "Thanks for the information." You stress the last word slightly, in the vain hope that you might see someone react to that. No such luck; Yuuki and Aki simply nod in agreement.

You half turn away from them. A twist of will and a wave of your hands, and the pall of loose Grief hanging over the scene drains away to form a loose carpet, your wings streaming away to add to it. That little act gets you some uncomfortable looks from the Ishinomaki girls, too.

"Goodbye for now," you call to them as you walk over to the carpet, Mami and Kirika following behind you in flanking positions. "Hopefully, with a little luck, we can get things settled in a day or two."

"'d be better luck than we've had," Yuuki snorts. "Eh, who knows. Good luck, and good hunting." She pivots on her heel and walks to the edge of the roof before throwing herself off, the rest of her group following her quietly. Ayaka throws you one last glance as she goes, eyebrow arched.

You roll your eyes at her.

You drop heavily onto the carpet, pressing a hand to your side. It comes away sticky with blood - not that you'd bothered to feel it, but still, nasty. Mami, instantly concerned, hisses sympathetically, and sits beside you to press the glowing radiance of her magic to your wound.

You chuckle sheepishly as Kirika bounces onto the carpet behind you. "I feel silly," you say. "I'm the only one who even got tagged in that fight." Absently, you lift the carpet into the air and begin heading towards Sendai instead.

"Don't be silly," Mami scolds.

"Ahhh, but you were absolutely amazing in that fight, Mami!" You turn a bright grin on her. You've been keeping this in for a while. "They didn't even come close to touching you. And that first hit, where you didn't even see what's-her-name, Yuuki? That was brilliant! And you looked damned cool doing it, too."

Mami blushes. "N-no, that was nothing special," she demurs.

"No, Mami." You reach outand grab her free hand tightly in yours, the roughness of her fingerless gloves contrasting with her soft skin. "That was phenomenal, Mami. You are phenomenal."

"T-thank you," Mami smiles, her blush intensifying. "You did well too, Sabrina."

"Heh," you say, and turn back to look at Kirika, who's smirking a shit-eating grin at you. You roll your eyes -you know what she's thinking- and inform her, "You too, Kirika."

Her grin widens, fang poking out. "I know!" she smirks, and buffs her fingernails against her shirt. "Would've gotten them if they didn't both have their stupid armours."

You laugh. "Yeah, but seriously, one against two, both of them experienced? That's good no matter how you slice it."

"Yeah, yesh," Kirika says, flapping her hand at you. "Go squeal over your ojou some more."

"Not my ojou," you reply, but grin at Mami nevertheless. "And really, Mami, that was really, truly remarkable." Her fingers shift under yours. "You're amazing, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise, not even yourself."

"Thank you," Mami says. Her face remains tinged with pink, and her hand still steady on your side, cooling warmth of the healing magic sinking into your gash - thankfully, it's not too deep a cut.

"I mean really," you say. "I could track them all and I don't think I could have pulled that shot off."

Mami shakes her head. "It's just... experience," she says. "You know... you're amazing too."

"Nah," you disagree. "I just have huge advantages. And look at me, I still got hit!"

"You were fighting three people at once, defending me, and helping Miss Kure, and still coordinating perfectly with me," Mami says, beaming at you. "That's amazing, too!"

"Heh," you say. "I just have advantages."

"Sabrina, experience is also an advantage," Mami says, moving her hand to tap you lightly on the nose.

"Hey!" you pout. "And fine. We all did great there. But you especially."

Mami giggles, returning to healing your wound.

"Anyway," you switch to telepathy as you reach cruising altitude and begin to accelerate. "I think we should tell Homura what happened back there?"

Mami nods. "That would be a good idea."

"Eeeeeh," Kirika drawls. "Hey, where're we goin', anyway?"

"Sendai," you say.

"Gotcha."

You reach out for the time traveller. "Hey, Homura?"

"Yes?" the time traveller replies immediately. You have the impression of her full attention on you, her violet eyes intent on nothing in particular.

"Just a little update, we went to Ishinomaki, and intercepted the Sendai group, who are now probably back in Sendai proper. We, ah, talked to the Ishinomaki girls, too," you tell her.

"... they attacked you first, didn't they?" Homura asks shrewdly.

"Well, yeah," you admit. "We took them down, and, then we talked to them."

"Ah," Homura says. "What now?"

"We're going to Sendai, to see what's happening there," you reply. "Is there anything happening back home?"

"No," Homura replies. "Madoka and Sayaka are shopping."

"Right," you say. "Are you shopping with them?"

"Yes," she says, a trace of... embarassment? leaking into her mental voice. You grin at Mami - her eyes are crinkled in amusement, too.

"Good," you say. "How's Oriko?"

"Sleeping," Homura says.

You snort lightly. Whoops. "OK," you say. "Anything else?"

"Nothing," Homura confirms.

"Alright, then. See you," you say.

"See you," she replies, closing the connection.

You close your eyes, sighing. "Well. One last thing, Mami - can you try reaching Miss Kato? I mean, she's ostensibly the lynchpin of that this entire thing turns around, so..."

"Of course," Mami agrees, smiling. "Hold on... Miss Kato?"

Silence.

"Miss Kato?" Mami tries again. "This is Tomoe Mami, from Mitakihara."

The response isn't any better, and eventually, Mami shrugs helplessly at you.

You push the carpet onwards, heading towards Sendai. The wind whips through your hair, sending it streaming out backwards. Idly, you wonder what Homura's hair would look like, ruffled by the wind, and giggle under your breath.

"Sabrina?" Mami looks curiously at you. Her hand is still glowing with magic, healing your side.

"No... I was just thinking, imagine if we'd brought Homura of this trip?" you say.

"Well, that fight would have been over much sooner," Mami agrees.

"No, I mean, her hair," you say, waving at your own, wracked by the onrushing wind.

Mami's head tilts, and she seems to consider the image, and giggles softly. "Ooh," she grins. "Though... she probably has some magic to fix that," she adds.

"Yeah, probably," you concede. "Heck, she probably carries a mirror and hairbrush in her shield."

"... probably," Mami agrees.

"Hey, hey, what's the joke?" Kirika pipes up.

You grin back at her. "You know Homura?"

"Don't like her," Kirika responds, making a face.

"Well, imagine if we'd brought her along," you say. "Wind, and hair."

"Uh? Oh. Ohhh. Oooooh," a smirk spreads across her face, and she starts making wavy gestures at her head, patting out what you imagine would be a huge, poofy cloud of hair. She promptly begins laughing, heartfelt cackles you can hear even over the wind.

You snicker, and grin at Mami, who gives you a fond smile.

"Miss Sabrina?" Yuuki's voice.

"Yep?" you ask. Idly, you pull a few marbles out from the fabric of the Grief carpet, and begin rolling them in your hand, letting them clack together.

"The University Group says they'll see you," Yuuki says. "You're going over, right?"

"Yeah, we're going," you agree. You close your fist over the marbles, and let it fall open to reveal a sandy pile of little grains. "An hour or two? Maybe a little more?"

"Hnn, you can haul ass, can't you?" Yuuki sounds faintly surprised. "]Yeah, I told 'em you're on your way. You can go kick up a ruckus or something."

"Or you could patch me through later?" you ask. The pile of grains streams out to drift in the air, shimmering in the deep, unsettling purple hues of Grief as the afternoon sunlight catches it. You drag your finger through the air, building a trail of grains that stays with you in defiance of the wind.

"Sure," she replies, an audible shrug in her voice.

"Alright, thanks. Hey, one mor-" Mami prods a finger into your side, and you jerk upright, straightening in reflex. She gives you an innocent look, laughter dancing in her eyes. "Good as new, Sabrina," she smiles.

"Thanks, Mami," you say.

"No problem!" she beams at you. She shifts, shuffling across the carpet so that she can sit directly beside you and leans her head against your shoulder. You smile down at her, and she returns it, nuzzling against you.

"Miss Sabrina?" Yuuki asks.

"Sorry, got distracted for a moment. Anyway, if you don't mind, another question - where and how did you find Miss Hamasaki, anyway?" you ask.

"Oh. Sheer luck, actually," Yuuki tells you. "Yuuna and Kimiko were headed home from their club, and saw Hamasaki walking down the street. So they called it in, and we went searching around and found her... minions two streets away."

"Ah, got it," you say, humming thoughtfully. "And you attacked immediately?"

"No, of course not," Yuuki replies. "We watched them for a while. Both Hamasaki and her... friends-" distaste drips off the word, "-went on walkabouts for a while. She was definitely scouting around, so... Yeah."

"I see," you say. You roll the Grief sand over the back of your knuckles, rippling and shimmering oddly in the light.

"Yep," Yuuki says.

"Alright. Thanks, then," you say.

"Mm," she says, and closes the connection.

Hmm. That's something, then. You contemplate the Grief sand, and focus a fraction of your attention on it while you make your next call. "Hey, Homura?" you call for the second time in... maybe half an hour?

"Yes?" she replies. Her mental voice sounds slightly strained.

You frown, hand stilling. "Hold up, is something wrong?" Mami looks up at your frown, and one hand comes up to gently smooth it away. You smile at her, and mouth 'Homura'. Mami nods in understanding.

"No..." she says.

"You're sure?" you press.

"Trying not to... talk... to Miki Sayaka," Homura admits. "She's saying that magical girls are... cool."

"Oh," you say, relaxing slightly. "Well. Hang in there."

"Yes," Homura says, tone drier than a desert. "What did you need?"

"Yeah. Do you know about one Kato Setsuko?" you ask. Hmm... back to your experimentations... Is changing the colour of Grief something you can do? Make it transparent?

"... something to do with the Sendai girls?" Homura hazards after a moment's thought.

"Yep," you confirm. You bear down on the small bit of Grief now cupped in your hand, and push. Suddenly, it turns a brilliant, shining gold, a handful of shimmering motes sifting gently about. It also lights up in your senses the same way the stuff of a Witch Barrier does. Mami jerks a little, and glances over, seeing what you're doing and frowning slightly. 'One moment,' you mouth at her.

"Dead," Homura says simply. "A while ago."

"You're sure?" you ask. Another presence makes itself felt beside you - Kirika poking her head over to see what you're doing. You mouth 'later' to her, too, and she rocks backwards on her heels, flopping over on the carpet instead with her arms splayed wide.

"No, I'm not," Homura replies. "I only know about her in passing?"

"Hm... good enough," you say. "Thanks!"

"Anything else?" Homura asks.

"Nope, that's it," you say. "See you soon."

"See you," Homura replies.

You purse your lips, considering that. Homura, at least, thinks that the mysterious Setsuko is dead. And while she could still be wrong, her knowledge is considerably more definitive than, well, anything you've heard so far about the girl.

Anyway. You look at Mami, and show her the handful of faux-gold you'd made out of Grief. "Experimenting a bit," you tell her and Kirika.

"Oh," Mami says. "It, uh, feels kinda like the stuff of a Witch Barrier."

"Is that gold?" Kirika asks, poking her head over again.

"I know," you sigh. "And yeah. Fake gold, made out of Grief. On the other hand, I guess that means I can do this."

You wave your hand in a grand sweeping gesture, and pull a wall of Grief up in front of you, which abruptly shimmers into perfect, crystal clarity, forming a windscreen. The rushing wind abruptly dies out, shielded from you, and you grin an exhilarated little grin. It pings loudly in your puella magi senses, admittedly.

Mami clears her throat. "That's amazing, Sabrina!" she says.

Kirika reaches out, and raps her finger on the windscreen. "Cool," she says simply. "Really feels like a Witch Barrier, though."

"Yeah, that's a bit of a problem," you admit. "Good for now, though."

"Hey, Miss Sabrina," Yuuki again, this time sounding faintly perturbed.

"Yep?" you respond, frowning at the tone of her voice.

"The University Group's kinda under attack right now," Yuuki says. "Like, now now. Uh. Maybe go pull their asses out of the fire?"

"Got it," you say.

Whee! And honestly, I do wonder that no one tried for this before. Remember how you could change the acoustic properties of Grief?
