As far as this talk about enchantments and speckled enchantments goes, I'm... honestly not too keen on the speckled variety. If we need something a bit esoteric right then and there? Sure, that's a use for it. Unfortunately, I think the speckled stuff loses one of the biggest strengths of enchantments: Effects derived from enchantments can leave our range. And pretty trivially too.

If we want eventual long-range options, be it a combat stuff like making Prima Luce battlefield-safe or non-combat options like remote cleansing or just long range telekinesis, the most obvious way to do so is to use enchantments to impose the magic at range. Be it making, possessing and storing grief, or using a larger scale enchantment as we just used on that rock to give ourselves telekinesis waldos .... or do Danmaku patterns.

Effects that use our raw will seems to be the main limiting factor for range, so I think the best option would be to find ways to work around or avoid using that. Thus, enchantment.

Enchantment is important, and speckled enchantment isn't a replacement for it. Rather, it's an alternative to griefhax that doesn't trigger the spidey-sense of every meguca in a five-block radius. Basically, it's letting us have some protective magics available that we ordinarily wouldn't: these have no need to leave our range.

If we can use the griefhax enchantment booster to boost the rate that we can enchant grief into its primed form with, that'd be a major improvement to our abilities (although not necessarily an exponentially increasing one).

That said, grief boosted enchantments that recursively reference grief have proven to cause a feedback loop before, so I'd temper my expectations of how effective that route will be.

I'll try to come up with something tomorrow.

Also, enchantment proposal: see if the enchanting booster makes us able to enchant grief faster or better.

I expect that a clear intent will result in this being possible, without feedback issues.

It would require extreme care during use, and perhaps inbuilt limits. Think SAFETY.

What is the desired function, really? If I look at it one way, "device pulls Magic out of Sabrina much faster than normal, and sinks it into target Grief region."
Do you think we need any caution about draining magic from ourselves with a pump?

Tell me how to make it safe?

Bingo!

We need to capitalize on our Munchkin cred. Can we make a speckled enchantment - that breaks up to become speckled utility fog? This might let us further camouflage the fog, and grant it temporary survival outside our range. Now, it can adhere and remain! Perhaps we can get it to carry a fog of primed enchanted Grief. Then we can trigger the enchanted particles for physics effects in unexpected ways?

Most of our effort should go into reaction time, and substitute Grief seed construction. I think any Grief mover we build will unlock a ton of options. Also, we should do our best to keep this event secret from the white death. Can we make an Incubator radar? Or are they diffuse in some way? Perhaps we just need to finish those step leading to success inside our Privacy.

We should remember to check on Aurora before going to sleep tonight. Probably take away the hope/happiness enchanted magic, too, just in case.

Thinking about happy magic...

It seems when we feed happy magic directly into a Seed, they take it; the impression I get is that we could keep feeding a Seed happy magic all day and they would keep gobbling it up.
You press your hand to Aurora.

And the magic drains away, almost yanked away by Aurora.
You hold it, hold that pure moment, and let it flow through your veins, and you let the magic saturate the Clear Seed. Aurora soaks it up like a sponge, drinking it down greedily, and you let it, keeping a close eye on the Seed.
Magic soaks into the Seed, saturating the crystal matrix. It's no different than Aurora, drinking up the magic eagerly and letting it spread throughout the core, and you nod, satisfied as you continue the treatment.

Well, maybe. Maybe if we feed them enough, they will saturate with happiness...

You take a careful look at Aurora.

The magic is... there. You can't really tell if it's happy magic, but it's there. Barely. It's spread thin throughout the Clear Seed, a thin haze you wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't been looking for it. Whisper-thin, like paint diluted in too much water.

Saturate is a word that comes up while working with seeds, happiness, and Grief.

You hold it, hold that pure moment, and let it flow through your veins, and you let the magic saturate the Clear Seed. Aurora soaks it up like a sponge, drinking it down greedily, and you let it, keeping a close eye on the Seed.

Differently than when we just feed happy magic to the Seed, it seems a Seed that comes in contact with happy magic enchanted Grief takes some of the magic into itself, but that magic stays connected to the Grief; then the Witch covers itself with that Grief, but doesn't gobble up the magic.

Regardless, you have work to do. You withdraw Aurora from your pocket, holding her up in front of you. She's wrapped in your enchanted Grief, still. But not... draining the magic, as you'd surmised. There are tendrils of magic sunk into the Clear Seed like roots, yes, but magic isn't running out, no more than the lump of enchanted Grief you're keeping as a control. Maybe the Grief is just a protective layer, something to shield herself with?

... Perhaps nerves would be a more accurate description than roots.

Why, though? Maybe they can't take the magic away from the Grief? Because the magic is rooted to our Grief, rather than given freely, and we're not making Soul contact (to avoid getting mind blasted by a witch's despair)?

You end the call, returning your attention to Hildegarde. She seems perfectly happy to soak up the... hopeful magic, just like Aurora. For good measure, you try a spark of regular magic, too, and find that it just washes off, exactly as before. And finally, you set her aside so that you can enchant another blob of Grief to test.

It takes you a few minutes of kneading and channelling of magic before you feel it's ready, just a few finger's worth of enchanted Grief. You press Hildegarde to it, and-

pleb

-Hildegarde all but snatched the Grief from you to cocoon itself.

Hm. Nothing notably different from Aurora, then.

Maybe the way the witches take the happy grief and shield themselves with it, is similar to what they do with their own Barriers? The happy magic probably feels better to them, than whatever warped fascinations witching out leaves them with. Like water to a drowning man girl.

I wasn't sure whether we have observed something similar with Hildegarde way back then, so I went back to check:

You stalk around the bundle of neurons, the core of the Witch, examining it with both your eyes and your magical senses. To your eyes, it's just a quivering lace of yellowish-green nerves, twitching spasmodically despite the fact that it has no muscle. To your other senses...

It's Hildegard. It is fundamentally the Witch, the tiniest mass of coherent Grief, slowly, constantly everting more Grief, stripped bare of the trappings of its form. Insofar as you can tell, this is the nexus around which a Grief Seed forms, the tiny wellspring of Grief you find in a Soul Gem. You can feel it stuggling to draw in more Grief from the Barrier, presumably to reform and fight back.

You nudge it with your Grief manipulation, trying to elicit a reaction from it. Sudden, it twitc-

Despair
lances through your mind, a powerful, sledgehammer blow that rips right through you. Useless. Why did you ever imagine you could help? Now Mami and Homura are looking to you, and you're going to fail an-

You scream, and break it off, staggering back a step and dropping to a knee with a wet squelching noise, supporting yourself on your hammer. Harsh breaths whoosh out of you in fast gasps, your mouth dry and heart thundering in a way that it hasn't since the beginning of this fight.

That... was... something.

With trembling fingers, you cleanse your own Soul Gem, siphoning the Grief off in thick, ropy streamers that you add to your wings. You don't have to look to tell that there's far more corruption in there than there's ever been to date.

You shakily rise to your feet, leaning heavily on your warhammer, the head of which sinks into the floor with a fleshy squelch as you put your weight on it. You stare at the Witch.

It... it makes sense, you suppose. A Witch is formed of a puella magi in the deepest, darkest pits of despair, and there'd be little to move it from there.

You... probably don't want to actually try prodding that further, you decide, and you steel yourself to try something else.

Maybe if you tried removing the Grief from it and replace it with magic? If a Witch is powered by Grief and a puella magi of, well, magic... Well, it's worth a shot, you figure, reaching out with shaky fingers-

No. No, you're going to rest a few more minutes first.

Cut off from all Grief, Hildegarde tries to form more Grief. In order to fight or just to have her body, don't know.

We Soul Snuggle make soul contact. Ouch.

Then we try to make an isolation field to put Hildegarde in, but we haven't unlocked Witch Hax yet, so we do nothing.

Nothing's happening. Maybe if you tried to feed it some magic? You spin out a bit of magic, very carefully poking it at the Witch. To your other senses, the Witch goes berserk, tiny spikes of Grief bubbling off the squirming bundle.

You flinch. No. Not again.

Your hands clench into a fist, and the sphere implodes, smashing the physical form of Hildegard into a pulp.

And-

With your sense focused as they are, you can feel Hildegard go quiescent, and a protective shall - the Grief Seed forming around it. The Barrier wavers, dissolving with the defeat of its Witch into its constituent Grief, rushing inwards in a torrent that pours endlessly into the Grief Seed. You release the Grief that forms your wings to go with it.

Feeding Hildegarde magic (not 'happy' magic, just magic, but not JUST magic, just magic) makes her berserk, and we kill Hildegarde out of fear of Soul Snuggling the Witch.

Hm. Thoughts so far, I need to go to sleep. :V

I mean, Witches want the happy feelings, probably addictive, after what they're gone and going through. I guess the fact they cover themselves in happy Grief but don't absorb that magic means they can't take the Grief's magic away, or maybe they just want the whole package deal: Happy feelings and Grief like they used to have available; the shell they form with the Grief might be an imitation of a Barrier... we'd just need to spen a year kneading Grief in timestop in order to test what would a Seed to with a Seedful of happy Grief. :V

Crazy thought: Rather than trying to witch up communications... we know the Witches like and want the happy magic, and try to shield themselves in happy Grief.

... Could we somehow use this to teach a See to communicate? As in, use logic puzzles which the Seed would have to solve in order to get the happy Grief? If that somehow works, we can make it more complicated over time...

And if we were totally ghoulish, we'd have Niko and Anri help us turn a girl's corpse into a blank revenant, pump it chock full of happy magic, and insert the Clear Seed...

But this would be wrong. The result might be a witch trapped in a body, but not a de-witched magical girl. Tons of horror for the witch, too.

The right way? Try a dosage study of happy magic infusion. We need a much larger supply to see if this has a meaning we can understand. We also need to pursue education. If Rionna can help us, either by measuring something we can't, teaching us something that would require experience, or using a power to shortcut one of the steps, that would be great. If she ultimately doesn't grant progress, we must keep at it, and scour the world for partners.

How are we going to introduce the new girls to Privacy? Do they even Kyuubey, bro? It would be bad to contradict their world view if they don't understand yet, but this is a real issue. The demo Privacy talk is that we go into the sphere to tell them we intend to keep secrets from Kyuubey. Not sure if we should reveal that Infohazards exist, they seem a bit weak ATM. We will have to do that in a few days, though.

We need to ask about their personal ties to home. Why not?

Presenting and using the town map is a basic step. Don't skip host points.

My rework of the bandwagon. Compressed and deleted, now there is space to fix or extend. Added minor teaching, not session. I feel we really only need the speed enchant in the speckled format. Other time could be used working on the magic enchantment Grief mover. Positive meditation is too easy and beneficial to pass up; we should advocate that.

[] Emphasize everything is voluntary. Ask them to think it over, at leisure.
-[] Offer a Clear Seed. Standard disclaimer.
[] Chat, offer tea. Reduce apprehension.
-[] Enumerate our magical population.
--[] In general terms, describe your Mitakihara and Kasamino friends. We want them to meet and explore.
---[] Explain, ask if they'd mind Sayaka copying their powers. They can feel free to decline.
-[] Explain enchanting and 4D trick.
[] Call Nagisa. Check how she's doing, offer another visit.
[] Enchant with Grief. Test to create effects, for reproduction as enchantments:
-[] Reflex/Thought speed booster.

Keeping my vote content, might try to compress later.

The "Tautology Club" is humor a few years outside her preference, by my guess. But it isn't wrong! @Onmur, you have something there.

Lets get a word game going with Yuma, where we make and use tautologies in nonsense ways. Not now, but when next we talk. It will be a private joke, a verbal intimacy we can share with her. Playing with recursive definitions is higher grade level, but not the mechanism. She uses it herself, and we should let her pull us in.

On an unrelated note, Madoka seems to have become an anime/manga archetype on her own right.

Look at this Magical Girl Kokone, the protagonist of Mahou Shoujo Kokone wa Kaku Katariki, and tell me if you spot five differences, because I can't.

  1. Jet-powered warhammer.
  2. Less frilly dress.
  3. Black hair decs.
  4. longer twin-tails.
  5. Eyes are already gold without achieving apotheosis.
:p

On a side note, I couldn't find anything about this series on TVTropes. But apparently it has megucas and mecha? You have my attention.

1. It's actually a technomagical staff as far as I understand.
5. What's that got to do with the price of butter? :V

Well, check it out. The main heroine is a mahou shoujo otaku in a world where one magical incident caused deaths of 40 million people, so she's sorta... weird.
Otherwise, her personality is something like Madoka in the timeline before the loops.

She's constantly saying things like "I know of this development!", so if she by any chance meets a dark-haired kuudere transfer student, I'm betting she's just gonna blush like a tomato and run away.

Compacting... not happy yet.

[] We realize Noriko and Akemi want protection.
-[] We need peaceful magi also. Call if people are in danger. We will take care of it.
-[] Hunting is too scary? Is this their choice?
-[] No obligated to help. Volunteers only. Ask them to think it over.

[] Demo the Clear seed, teach safety rules.
[] Powerpoint, using city map. mention all our local friends. Suggest meetups.
[] Actual recreation. Play or watch something with them. Reduce stress.
[] Find out if they still have family in Shiogama, or not.

[] Magical Girls are pro-active!
-[] Express their selves, and then do those things.

[] Suggest daily happiness meditation. Possibly:
-[] Secret diary?... Demo the teacup trick!
-[] Show them basic enchantment - happy emotion infused magic.
--[] Each session, they need to review, select positive events of the day. Use during enchantment.
[] Call Nagisa. Check how she's doing, offer a visit, including Yuma.

Gundam / PMMM kitbashing happened really early? I take this to be a derivation, thus even more specific.

Point Insertion pt. 17
You blink, pulling back mentally. You can't help but replay the way the conversation went, the way their expressions just fell when you brought up Witches, and the way they've been waiting for a shoe to drop this entire evening.

... no. This is not how you should do things.

You flip both your hands up, palms out.

"I... hold on," you say, squeezing your eyes shut and pressing the fingers of your free hand against them. "Miss Watanabe, Miss Saito, I'm sorry. I don't mean to make it an obligation, and I... I realise that I was unconsciously framing things rather callously. I don't want to take advantage of an unfair situation, so..."

You blow out a hard breath. Mami squeezes your hand, under the table.

"Miss Watanabe, Miss Saito, you are under no obligation to help," you say, meeting their eyes in turn. Both of them look more than a little confused. "I just... I just want to emphasize that. I'm looking for volunteers, and I don't want a decision because I led you into it or something."

Noriko exchanges a look with Akemi before turning back to you. "Ah... Miss Sabrina, you seem to have the impression we're..." she says, trailing off. Her gaze skitters about as she searches for a word. "That we're phobic of Witches?"

"What? No!" you protest, blinking. "I mean... I assume you don't, uh... you don't particularly relish encountering them, though."

"We don't," Noriko concedes. "But we're not afraid of them. We wouldn't have survived very long... after, if we didn't hunt."

"I believe you, and I'm not trying to insinuate otherwise," you say, holding your hands up. "But, I... look, I'm making a mess of this. I don't want to make it a point of pride or anything, and I don't want to pressure you into it, and everything we've provided, and will provide, is free and will remain so, and I just want to make sure that you genuinely want to do this - you're still recovering and settling in, and the help is nice but absolutely not necessary, and-"

Mami's fingers touch your wrist, and your mouth clacks shut. You're babbling. She gives you a warm, reassuring smile, and you force yourself to relax.

Akemi's lips tug upwards into a wry smirk. "It's nice to know you're as bad as we are about dealing with this."

That startles a giggle out of Noriko. You stare at them, and then you groan, covering your eyes.

"There goes all my cred for being suave and in-control," you grumble.

Mami takes your hand, patting it with her free one. "Did you ever have any, Sabrina?"

You shoot her a betrayed look, and she giggles.

"Miss Watanabe, Miss Saito, what we're trying to say is that we truly wish you to live well," Mami says. "We want you to take all the time you need to deal with your demons."

"We... I, I..." Akemi sighs, words failing her as she tries to speak. Her shoulders slump, and she shakes her head.

"I don't think we're ever going to... leave it behind," Noriko picks up the conversation. "And we are very grateful for the opportunity you've given us, Miss Sabrina."

"You're very welcome," you say.

"I..." Noriko exchanges a look with Akemi. "If it's OK with you, I think... maybe in a few days? We'd like to settle in and get used to the city. As... as you told us before, if we run into any Witches, we'll tell you, but I don't think we want to go out looking for them, right now?"

"That's more than fine," you say, smiling. Your hand seeks Mami's, under the table, and you interlace your fingers. Mami smiles at you.

"And, um... you mentioned roommates," Akemi pipes up. "That's fine."

"OK," you say, nodding. "I'll let you know as and when it becomes necessary, and I won't force them on you either." You exhale slowly, and smile. "One last heavy thing, and then I think I'm out of serious discussion for the night?"

"Yes?" Akemi says.

"Alright, so..." you fumble in your pocket, reaching awkwardly across your body because you don't really want to let go of Mami's hand. You pull out Hildegarde's Seed. "So... this is a Clear Seed. It's what happens when I empty a Grief Seed of all its Grief, and it can last a long, long time. Would you like one? Free, of course, though, uh... I'll need a regular Grief Seed to convert."

"I-" Akemi's eyes go wide. "Yes, please-"

"Akemi!" Noriko says.

"Free," you repeat with gentle emphasis. "I'm sorry, I can't give you the ones I have, they're currently, uh, experiments. And, um, mostly no-strings-attached. The only things I demand are that you don't abuse these, and that you help magical girls you come across if it should come to that. No using unlimited magic to attack other magical girls, not that I think you would, and if someone new pops up and needs help..."

"Pay it forward," Akemi says, nodding. "I can get behind that idea." Her gaze flicks over to Noriko's, holding the other girl's gaze for a moment, before Noriko nods slowly.

"What else should we know about them?" Noriko asks.

"You have to keep regular Seeds and Clear ones physically separate," you say, putting Hildegarde away. "Otherwise the regular one will suck any Grief from the Clear Seed out, and respawn the Witch. And these have only existed for a week or so, so I'm still monitoring them for long term stability."

"Ah," Noriko says. "I... we can deal with that."

You grin faintly. "Hey, if it makes you feel better about testing what are technically prototypes, I've got the oldest Clear Seeds in existence. If there's any problems, I'll notice it first."

"No, really, we can deal with that," Noriko says. "Right, Akemi?"

"Right!" Akemi says, smirking. Just a little. "Good luck and all."

"... hey, while we're on that subject, I'm curious - Miss Saito, can you enchant, ah, good luck charms?" you ask.

"I... yes," Akemi says, expression falling. "Not good enough, but... yes."

"Oh. I'm sorry," you say. Their third teammate had one, it seems. You can't say you sense any enchanted objects on Noriko, though.

"We'll be happy to accept a Clear Seed, Miss Sabrina," Noriko says. "Um..."

"I've got it," Akemi says. She fumbles around in her pockets, and withdraws a Grief Seed. The only Grief Seed they have with them.

"I'll be just a few moments," you say, taking it gently. "In the meantime, ah... I've just realised you don't know all the magical girls in Mitakihara."

"We haven't met all of you?" Akemi asks.

"Not quite," you say, and start explaining about Oriko and Kirika and everyone, really, as you start drawing Grief forth from the Seed. Just little descriptions, quick power rundowns. You don't mention that Oriko and Kirika were once your enemies, and are still under house arrest. You almost mention the Animators, but...

Not with Mami right beside you, smiling as she offers comments. Maybe later, or maybe by telepathy. Besides, they mostly keep to themselves.

"A power copier?" Noriko asks, eyes fixed to the forming Clear Seed in your hand.

"Yeah," you say. "Actually, ah... you don't have to agree, of course, but it would be good if she could copy your powers sometime? I mean, again, you don't have to, but between you and me, I'm trying to turn her into magical girl Batman, a power for every situation."

Mami shakes her head, giving you a fond, exasperated smile.

"I... suppose?" Noriko says, exchanging a look with Akemi. "I'm not sure how much use my power would be, but I'm fine with that?"

"Um, same," Akemi says.

You beam at them as the last dregs of Grief slow to a trickle. "Alright! And here you are."

You present them with the Clear Seed. Akemi's the first to try it, snatching the Seed from your hand and tapping it to her Soul Gem. She watches with awed eyes as the Grief drains away, and immediately offers it to Noriko.

"Thank you," Akemi whispers to you. "Thank you, Miss Sabrina."

You smile, squeezing Mami's hand as you lean back and watch the disbelief and raw joy mingle on Akemi and Noriko's faces. Mami smiles at you, leaning against your side.

"Can- can we have a moment?" Noriko asks, already half-rising from the chair. "This is- this is a lot to take in."

"Of course," Mami says, squeezing your hand.

"Take all the time you need," you add, smiling. The words are barely out of your mouth when they stand, and hurry off to the living room.

You beam at Mami. "You've been quiet."

"This is your work," Mami says, smiling softly at you. You shuffle your chair over so you can hug her properly. "I didn't want to step on your toes."

"And I don't want you to feel marginalized," you say.

"I didn't," Mami says firmly. "I- I enjoy watching you speak, Sabrina. You have such conviction."

You smile, and hug her, twisted oddly on the chair to wrap your arms around her. Eventually, though, you have to let go, and by wordless agreement, you starting cleaning up the dishes.

You're side by side with Mami, and up to your elbows in soapy water -you're cheating with Grief to help, of course, but it's oddly soothing to wash some by hand- when a new voice intrudes in your head.

"Hello, is this Sabrina?" The new voice is sharp despite the rounded consonants of English spoken with a distinctly Irish accent. "Where are you? I will come to you."

Ugh. I'm very sorry - this seems to be becoming a bit of a habit, but here we are again: Update cut off at a slightly odd point because I got distracted during the day, and I want to update today. I did genuinely intend to cover more of the enchantment stuff this update, and I'm sorry about that.

[X] Call Nagisa. Check how she's doing, and try to set up another visit.
[X] Make a Grief Enchantment Enhancer; use it to try making Speckled Enchantments:
-[X] Perception: Sense enhancers (Grief, magical, normal), lie detector.
-[X] Defense: Against projectiles, extreme light and sound, mental and soul magics, harmful effects in general.
-[X] Utility: Toggleable privacy field, ability enhancers (combat, multitasking, control, magic).
[X] Test successful Speckled Enchantments for witchy feeling, duration, and effectiveness. Drop those with marginal value.

Yay, soulguca introduced herself via telepathy and not an ambush andor sudden bombing.

This is promising.

Oh yessss. Soulguca. It's happening.

Well, first thing's first, get Homura and Sayaka on the line. Homura's gonna have some useful paranoia advice, and she can do overwatch during the initial meeting.
