Also lost track of this, yeah. Although Madoka would have to phrase it properly because she's kinda dealing with a jerkass genie here.

No, she's not. Wishes aren't granted by Kyubey and he has no power over a wish's interpretation or fulfillment. The wish is an expression of the girl's desire made manifest, and so is not taken verbally literally but by her sincere emotional intent.

The fallout comes from natural consequences and girls not being honest with themselves. Sayaka's wish destroyed her because she wished for something expecting something else, and Kyouko's wish destroyed her family because she basically violated her father.

There's also the magical potential of the girl in question; the higher it is, the more options that are open to them. Sayaka couldn't wish to rewrite the universe.

Ooh, true. Come to think of it, Oktavia's barrier in Timeline 3 (crazy!Mami) seemed to have slightly different features as well- didn't its boss fight take place on what looked like a pop concert stage, rather than an orchestral hall?

This is because in that timeline, Kyousuke was a guitarist. The barrier had different familiars, too.

Uh, no. Wishes are fulfilled in both wording and intent.

Mostly because the Incubator only serves as a catalyst. It's the girls own emotions that guide the magic - in effect, once the process begins, the girl grants her own wish.

Right, that... yeah, my bad, it would completely change the tone of the series if Kyuubey was a mustache-twirling type of villain who mucked about with wishes like that, wouldn't it. The way everything's set up now, he can rightly (and smugly) state that he fulfilled X wish to Y's specifications, and he Did Nothing Wrong because the consequences are always on the wisher's head.

E: Although if the series did change that much, I fully support Kyuubey hamming it up with Skeletor's voice. "Nyeeh, I just don't understand you foolish humans! Curse you, Puella Magi Holy Quinteeeet!"

This is because in that timeline, Kyousuke was a guitarist. The barrier had different familiars, too.

I keep hearing this tossed around, but I'm honestly confused. How on earth does Kyousuke jump between violinist and guitarist if the only thing that changes between timelines is whatever Homura does? Unless minor things change every time Homura presses reset, her butterfly effects shouldn't reach that far back.

Each timeline can have anomalies.

No two timelines are exactly the same.

... man, just when I thought Homura's job couldn't get any harder.
She's been through almost a hundred loops already IIRC.

If it was easy, she would have been able to save Madoka already.

Her lack of diplomacy doesn't help matters.

Because she's not actually rewinding time, she's going to alternate universes that are similar enough. That's why details change.

Yeah, I meant that on top of everything else that makes her mission an uphill battle, she has to keep an eye out for those kinds of small changes, and- over 100 or so loops- probably has been tripped up by these minor variations before.

It really is a miracle she hadn't snapped during the series itself, and lasted long enough to snap during Rebellion.

Huh. To quote a certain protagonist, magic really is such bullshit.

Traveling between universes seems actually less bullshit than brute forcing the entire universe to turn back a few weeks, in the same sense that it's easier to walk to someone else's house than it is to pick mine up and move it over to theirs.

That's one way to think about it.

However, if one subscribes to a branching-timeline theory of time travel and assumes that Homura is merely moving herself back along the timeline, then one could use a different metaphor and say that it's easier to pull a U-turn and travel back along the road you're currently on turn than to travel sideways to a parallel road one block over.

Uh... huh.

Sabrina is Yamako . Your soul gem color is Brown, and you wear it on your boots. You have Red hair and your outfit theme color is Pink. Your motif is a Eye theme, and your weapon is Cannon.
Godwinson is Kido . Your soul gem color is Brown, and you wear it on your boots. You have Green hair and your outfit theme color is Pink. Your motif is a Spots theme, and your weapon is Tetsubo.
So clearly I am Yamako Kido, who has christmas-coloured hair, an eyeball-polka-dot theme, and a tetsubo that's also a cannon?

That's... uh...

...

*worried look*

It also acts as evidence that the PMMM universe is at least 5-dimensional, whereas we only have proof of 4 dimensions in our own.

*remember, Charlotte would naturally have been an active witch. Witches only become grief seeds once defeated. For that grief seed to be there, someone would have to defeat Charlotte, fill the seed with grief to the bursting point, then leave it there.
Another alternative to @AuraTwilight's idea is that this was a hit on Mami by an outside group after Mitakihara's territory, which is supposed to be huge for a single meguca. Mami is well known for being a strong 'guca, but also one who has a massive heroine complex, so she'd be certain to go after a Witch at a hospital, even if it was so strong that it normally takes a whole team of meguca to handle.

While we're on the topic of the Incubators and Homura... The Incubator currently has all the pieces of the puzzle necessary to potentialbomb Homura, and it's only going to become more likely as time passes. We need to try and defuse that, and I'd prefer to do it sooner rather than later.
Hell, we can do this today. One thing about the Sabrina/Homura power combo is that we can have long, meaningful discussions with her in the blink of an eye basically any time we want.

Hey, maybe we should insist on Madoka herself being present for this discussion. We should insist on Homura holding Madoka's hand the entire time, just to make sure she's safe, too. Homura letting Madoka into her timestop safeworld, holding hands? It would be the pinnacle of our achievements thus far.

The problem with that theory is that if there was a Deadly Meguca Assassination Squad ready to move in and fight Sayaka for Mami's territory, then Kyubey wouldn't have needed to talk Kyouko into coming there to do the same. If anything, having an entire team of openly homicidal meguca gunning for Sayaka would have been a far greater incentive for Madoka to contract to save her.

If Kyubey did plant Charlotte's Grief Seed, then killing Mami probably wasn't the intended result, since if anything her death reduced Madoka's odds of contracting by making her aware of the dangers. Probably he would have been hoping that it would hatch before they had time to go get Mami (note how Kyubey does not offer to save time by calling her there with telepathy) and one or both of them would have been forced to contract to stop it. Hell, if Charlotte had noticed Sayaka was there and started going after her sooner, then she would have had to contract to survive.

Of course, that hypothethical Death Squad from, say , Tokyo might have run into something and be put out of commission... but come on, occams razor.
We know someone who has a) opportunity
B) reason
And C) needed lack of morals.
Kyuubey.

Why postulate an unknown party that then got sidetracked or xhanged plans? KISS.

Random832 is Enaki . Your soul gem color is Blue, and you wear it on your bracelet. You have Green hair and your outfit theme color is Pink. Your motif is a Zoo theme, and your weapon is Musket.

What is even a Zoo theme? Also, green and pink and blue?

(Real Name) is Miku . Your soul gem color is Black, and you wear it on your skirt. You have Red hair and your outfit theme color is Red. Your motif is a Fashion theme, and your weapon is Kyoketsu.

That's better.

"Hello everyone, I'm your backup commentator, Tomoe Mami! And here with me providing analysis, we've got Mikuni Oriko. Oriko, what do you think about these teams?"

"I, of course, already know the outcome of this match, but for the purposes of suspense we will pretend the losers weren't already decided the moment they chose to fight against my girlfriend."

"Right. The teams, then?"

"Team Brain Damage obviously has the upper hand, including one of the most prodigious melee fighter ever seen."

*Preens*

"Let's remind everyone that it's forbidden to use magic directly against the arena platforms."

"That goes double for Sabrina, of course."

*Waves*

*Waves back*

"I have to say, the dedication to the team name was impressive, but I'm dubious about their last choice."

"Oh, Kirika and Sabrina will be dragged down quite a bit by their teammate, and I mean that literally, as Hamasaki Akiko hasn't actually moved of her own volition in a while, not even to sign the pseudo legal consent for this tournament."

"Oh? How did she get to participate, then?"

"I said it was pseudo legal."

"... Right. I'm sure Team Fukushima will take advantadge of this and put up a good fight, don't you agree?"

"Pfff- excuse me-"

*Giggles away from microhphone*

*Clears throat*

"Now, there is a bit of a grudge going on between these two teams, so I remind ALL participants to conduct themselves in a fair and controlled manner.

"IS EVERYONE READY?"

*AUDIENCE CHEERS!*

*Both teams sans Akiko nod to the commentator booth*

"THREE..."

"TWO..."

"ONE..."

"FIGHT!"

← To Be Continued...
So...
"THREE..."

Oriko puts on a pair of sunglasses.

"TWO..."

Mami scrambles to do the same.

"ONE..."

"FIGHT!"

A blinding flash of light covers the stadium.

"And they're moving. Koizumi wastes no time covering her team's movements-"

"-A reminder to not abuse magics against the public-"

As the light starts dissipating, a shadow zooms in into Akiko.

"-and we can see Nishimura is trying to take out Hamasaki as soon as possible-"

"-we all saw this coming-"

"-and with Akiyama and Koizumi pressuring Sabrina and Kure, it seems Hamasaki is literally being carried off the stage-"

"-the next part will surprise you-"

"-Hamasaki punches Nishimura off the stage!"

Moe goes flying down the side of the arena- there's another flash of light over the stadium.

"Koizumi aids- obscuring Moe in shadows and- she's back upside and she flies into a kick-"

Moe's leg impacts against Akiko's frame with a dull sound... to no effect, her momentum keeping her momentarily anchored against Akiko's Grief covered torso.

A Grief covered hand latches onto Moe's leg and Akiko -now completely covered in Grief plate- jerkily turns around swinging Moe overhead like a flail- and down crashing the girl against the ground.

"That must've hurt."

A lenght of rebar impacts against Akiko's black covered frame and wraps itself around her form, forcing her to let go of Moe.

"Helped once more, Nishimura backs away from the not so easy target to pile onto Kure, who's having a little trouble trying to approach Koizumi-"

"Not that Koizumi's beams are having any effect-"

"-as they're constantly being dispelled, but now Nishimura gets in close- cutting Kure off and giving Koizumi time to catch her breath."

"While we admire Kirika's outstanding performance in fending off the super fast Nishimura while masterfully avoiding Koizumi's ranged attacks, I will confirm to the stadium that Nishimura Moe did not touch ground when thrown off the arena earlier on- which would've disqualified her."

"Indeed-"

"A masterful-"

A piece of rebar flies at Kirika's back- who dodges at the last second- the steel bar nails a wide eyed Moe in the forehead-

"-dodge by Kirika Kure-"

Moe's sent flying limp and Sasami jumps up- catches her mid air-

"-Surprise attack from Hamasaki!"

-and is intercepted by Akiko's black covered form reaching up to catch them-

Sasami kicks wildly to little effect, a black hand catching her leg in a vice grip and pulling her close. At the last second, she throws Moe's body aside and covers herself in light-

"... she's saved her team mate, but she's now been caught with little chance to break-"

Both Sasami's and Akiko's shapes are covered in light -Akiko's armor shedding wisps of black mist- then armored arms latch themselves onto Sasami and Akiko's body jumps off the platform.

"A wise move by Sabrina-"

Both girls are but a beacon of harsh light falling off the floating platform.

Moe speeds off towards the edge of the arena-

"-Kirika's having none of that-"

-only to be intercepted by a whirlwind of claws and a wave of dispelling magic, stalling her long enough to-

"HAMASAKI AND KOIZUMI FELL OFF THE ARENA! THEY ARE OUT!"

"As I was saying, a wise move, discarding her puppet while taking out one of her opponents, now Sabrina can fully concentrate on her fight with Akiyama, which seems to be ramping up-"

The stadium RUMBLES as tonnes of scrap metal impact against an equal amount of Grief marbles, which then flow around the reinforced steel to zoom in into Atsuko- the metal controller quickly jumps aside while throwing an arm forward- hundreds of steel pieces flying now unimpeded at Sabrina-

-who flies up into the air, wings of corruption forming in an instant.

"I'd like to remind you all that flying outside the stadium is forbidden, and is ground for disqualification. Also, Nishimura doesn't seem to like this idea."

Before the white haired girl can fly too high, Moe's jumped at her-

"This seems like folly."

Sabrina's hammer flies down to meet Moe- who twists mid air and kicks- is slapped away by a Grief wing.

"Not entirely."

A solid piece of metal flies under Moe's form, who kneels on it as hundreds, thousands of bits and pieces of scrap metal start floating in a wide sphere around Sabrina's flying form.

"Oh, this could be bad for Team Brain Damage."

Sabrina yells at Kirika, who still chasing Moe, stops, turns and dashes towards Atsuko.

"If she doesn't make it in time-"

Now aided by her friend's impromptu platforms, Moe presses Sabrina, not commiting to a full attack, but jumping between the many pieces of floating debris and making use of her greater speed to keep Sabrina off guard.

"This could be it for them, and Team Fukushima's victory, as skilled as Kirika is-"

Sabrina answers with a whirlwind of Grief marbles around herself to match the one made out of steel closing in on her form-

"-two on one she would lose. Watch out-"

-but she's quickly covered in shadows as all the scrap metal quickly rushes towards her floating form-

"Almost-"

A deluge of Grief explodes out from Sabrina's position, tearing into the enclosing tonnes of steel with a hideous screech of metal.

"-but not quite caught in Akiyama's trap."

As hundreds of pieces of rebar and other metals crash all over arena, Sabrina dashes away from a stunned Moe, flying directly towards Atsuko... who's madly scrambling away from a flurry of slashes from Kirika's claws.

"Akiyama's cornered-"

"Nishimura in no state to help-"

"She spots Sabrina-"

"Too late-"

A wave of wrongess, deadness, explodes from Kirika's form-

"-annulled her metal control magic-"

Sabrina flips herself to turn her flying dash into a kick.

"-which takes her by surprise-"

Sabrina's feet connects-

"-and she's flying out-"

-Atsuko twists as she flies over the edge of the arena platform-

-To be met by Kirika's leg as it
scissors into her-

"-and down!"

Atsuko's grunt of pain can be heard as she plummets down to crash into the ground.

"AKIYAMA ATSUKO IS OUT!"

"An esplendid performance by Kirika Kure, and fantastic teamwork between the members of Team Brain Damage."

"Indeed, and what a turn around that was."

"Exactly. Had Akiyama managed to fully catch Sabrina inside her metal sphere with Nishimura inside..."

"Almost fully covered in darkness, Sabrina would've had very little chance to make it out."

"But now it's two on one in Team Brain Damage's favour and it seems Nishimura is struggling to stay on her feet..."

Gasping, stumbing, scratched and bleeding, Moe looks back and forth between Kirika's and Sabrina's slowly approaching forms, circling around her until she can't keep them both in her field of vision at the same time.

"This seems to be it!"

"Will Nishimura surprise us at the last moment?"

Moe raises her arms-

"She's doing something...!"

Sabrina and Kirika tense up...

"Of course not."

"I... give up!" shouts Moe.

A moment of silence...

"MOE SURRENDERS! TEAM FUKUSHIMA IS OUT!"

"Which means..."

"TEAM BRAIN DAMAGE WINS!"

The stadium erupts in cheers.

"... You're monsters," grumbles Moe as she limps out of the arena.
