Anyway looking at the update again, we were probably way to vague about the Kirika thing. Eh, we can always bring it up later.

Oriko sighs. "It was only pain," she murmurs. "I had hoped I could deal with it myself."

You purse your lips. "Oriko... I want to help."

"And sometimes, I want to be able to do things by myself," she counters calmly.

And by dealing with it yourself, you mean being half-conscious and insentient from the pain while Kirika worried over you?:V

Sort of wish we had gone more into this but too late now. Also a bunch of hints that Oriko is probably starting to chafe from being stuck in the house. Which could lead to trouble.

Let's cheat.

[x] "Hey, Oriko. Hate to ask this, but, if you're up to it - which action could I take that has the biggest chance of fixing your headaches?"

She's in pain, but it's one question. And if it works, it'd give her some amount of agency-by-proxy as well, which should help in Case 2.

Also, I bet...

> Oriko gives you a flat look. "You won't do it." "Say it anyway." "Kill Homura." "God dammit." "Told you."

Fucking Feathers.

> "Look, just .. go down the list in order of chance of helping. I'll tell you when to stop." "Okay, let's see. Kill Madoka..."

(Also, we're somewhat suffering from protagonism - the assumption that we need to solve every problem and are responsible for every failure.)

Some of us don't.

or going against her at all, you mean.
Duly noted, but frankly I don't care. Homura has been through a lot and the girl needs help. She has done some horrible things, but when your actions stop having permanent consequences because of time loops, it's probably pretty easy to start crossing the line. That and the girl has seen some shit. Naturally she's a bit abrasive. I'm not losing her as an ally because you think she's mean.

Homura deserves us giving her an honest try. She's been through enough shit that just rocking her and doing things our way would be terrible. However, if she becomes a serious threat to our success due to her issues then I fully expect us to rock her and not unrock her until such time as current issues are resolved.

Homura is a huge asset and I want her to get her happy ending but I'll be damned if I let her fuck up this timeline because she can't let shit go.

You know, at this point I don't really see that we have much to gain by taking O&K out and about before lunch. I recommend going along with it and making a tolerable plan that leaves them behind for today. That plan would probably include teleconferencing some of our business for the day to buy time to develop solutions for O.

The other leg of my notion is to come up with a way to bring O&K around in a way that is acceptable to H. We should leave K behind, since we don't have an excuse for her. We should share as much of our metaknowledge-reasons for trusting O as feasible.

Here's a possible precaution that might satisfy H. Encase O's soul gem in high explosive, with a detonator that goes on contact with air. With the encapsulated detonator in place, surround it with impermeable grief, evacuate the air, and expose the detonator. Best do a couple dry runs first, I think. Anyway, that leaves O in the position of instant death if S so much as loses focus, which ought to partially satisfy H's bloodthirstiness. On the other hand, O trusts S enough that there's at least a chance of getting agreement from O&K on something like that, with the understanding that H is the reason for it. O was willing to die so H would be S's ally, after all.

I don't think her powers work like that.

Unless we can come up with a way to beat Homura's timestop, that'd be pretty hard.

Firn has our metaphorical gem in a vise, here. Probably as a punishment for how reactive-instead-of-proactive we've been.
Well, there is only so much pro-active things that a hero can do! I mean, what are you going to do, form a posse of magical girls and hunt down Walpurgisnacht before it even arrives and destroys the city?
...

WHY IS THIS NOT ON THE AGENDA?

WHY IS THIS NOT ON THE AGENDA?
Maybe it should go on the agenda now. Is there a problem tracking it down? Maybe we should shift focus to a few rounds of weapons development and go kill it? We've got grief-rending, the mundane option is most likely feasible as well, though it would require some of the weapons development time, and if we can come up with a plan C for hurting it I'd have no objection.

This seems like a pretty good way to win brownie points with Homura...

[] Ask Homura to at least hear you out. If she still doesn't want them leaving afterward, then they won't be leaving.
[] You already know that they are dangerous and you won't be taking your eyes off them for a second.
-[] Your certain that you can take them both in a fight, if you had to. The only reason Oriko isn't crippled from the pain is because your using your power on her, and you also have a contingency for Kirika.
-[] You would also be keeping their soul gems with you, which you could detonate almost instantly with flicker of your power.
[] And she isn't faking it. She was almost insentient from the pain and honestly looked like half a corpse while Kirika was stressing out. It wouldn't be right to just leave them like this.
-[] And you had checked her soul gem which looked like her power was looping on itself, while your's and Kirika's soul gem looked normal. You think that at least going outside and doing something even for a little bit could really help her.
[] If they had some plan on escaping or coming up with some ambush, then they could have easily done it from inside their house. And you wouldn't just let them run wild outside.
[] If Homura still says no, then just drop it and tell them you'll keep them inside and find some other way to help her then.
[] Tell Oriko and Kirika the news, whatever it is.

I really don't know if this would be at all convincing. But still feels like we should make some kind of effort. Think I'll try and come up with something better later.

If we're going ahead with trying to make the ring permanent/semi-permanent, I have a couple of thoughts on that:
  • Make the same ring, but add two more specific 'functions' to it: Make it self-containing (able to retain its current form and effect), and make it able to accept a magic, either as fuel to maintain its existence, or as an enchantment to keep its form and function

  • Tether it to a half-full grief seed. My thought was that grief seeds are like celestial bodies with each their own gravity field. The denser the planet/star (grief content) the stronger its pull. The precedence was from the same Grief seed we have on hand: Aurora. Or rather when we nearly accidentally re-hatched it:
"Sabrina," Mami begins speaking quickly. "You have a severely overfilled Grief Seed - we could feel it from over there." The blonde points off in the distance.

You blink at her, and plunge your free hand into your pocket, finding the other Grief Seed you have and pulling it out. When you look at it, it is visibly pulsating and surrounded by a sheen of Grief, and now that it's been pointed out - you do notice it, pulsing faintly on your senses.

"I... don't know," you respond, looking blankly between the two Grief Seeds - Aurora's, horribly overfilled and throbbing menacingly, Hildegard's, somehow emptier than it should be. "I didn't even touch that one, honest!"

Mami frowns. "Then why is it so overfilled? It's dangerous."

"Hmm... does Grief transfer between Grief Seeds when you touch them together?" you ask curiously. "It doesn't, right?"
What's accepted is that Hildegarde might be returning into its Soul Gem form, which is why Aurora was draining its grief. But its also possible that happened because Aurora has a much larger amount of grief in it, thus had a strong pull on grief surrounding the seed.

The idea is to trick the ring that it's a partally manifested barrier under the grief seed's control....I have more thoughts on that but its 3 AM and I need to collapse now.

Noooo, really? I couldn't tell!
Your sarcasm is duly noted.
In Homura's shield, with all the Sayakas.
Do be serious here, please.
Yo. Friendly reminder on Firn's note below. I know you're joking Godwinson, but that can be easily misinterpreted and devolve to mudslinging. Landcollector, migh want to ease up a bit.

Whisker's looks alright, so far as convincing her.

Also, since we've never tried it, wouldn't it be sort of darkly humorous if it turned out we totally couldn't gem shatter?

I mean, we can still crush them with the grief outside of them sure, but we've never had an occasion to test it.

And I honestly hope we never have that 'opportunity'.

I still want to make sure we do it right. Uh, the talking with Homura bit, not the gem smashing.:V

Would rather not have another repeat of last time. Maybe show a bit more empathy and understanding of where Homura is coming from so it doesn't seem like we're just dismissing her concerns?

Perhaps reinforce that we're only willing to do this because we firmly believe that we can destroy them at will if they threaten our friends? That we're not relying on blind trust in their "inherent goodness"?
