Mmm... Considering we've been the ones to contact Ono telepathically once and again, will she take offense at us sending Mami in front for our talk? It's like we're hiding behind her, or something.
That... hmm. Might actually be a plus. Megane, I think, sees Mami as the leader. Or at least that's how I interpret the first meeting. Being foisted off on a lieutenant who proceeds to blow her off... yeah.

I suspect Megane may see it as an incompetent lieutenant finally passing the buck up the chain of command.

That facade isn't going to last long. Miami is best sempai but not right now.

Sitting on the floor: Communication balance. She's sitting on her bed. We should not be standing up (implicit dominance stance), but sitting on the floor gives her an implicit dominance position. We're intruding in her room, so we need to counterbalance that.

I'm inclined to agree. Mitakihara is a rival, but Mami is the 'leader' of our group. One might consider that allowing Sabrina to be the main mouthpiece was indicative that Mami considered Ono 'beneath' her, due to the rivalry. Mami doesn't take it seriously, but clearly appearances mean something to Ono. Every single thing we do is part of the conversation.

[x] Nod to Mami.
[x] Calm down. Trust Mami.
[x] Gesture Homura over to you while stepping back slightly.
[x] When Mami looks ready, drop timestop.
[x] Take a seat on the floor, hopefully drawing attention. Tug Homura down to join you.

Mami's choice of positioning is her own. I suspect she'll pull a chair out to sit on, to put her even with Ono on the bed.

[x] Explicitly defer to and support Mami.
[x] Potential side comments:
-[x] "The average magical girl uses about 1 grief seed per week, give or take. Someone with high efficiency magic can stretch it out to one seed every couple weeks. You're going through about one seed per day. That's not sustainable."

there is a Dark Souls joke in here somewhere, but I'm not caught up in the lore enough to make it.

Chain of command...

Sabrina: *Fussing over Mami* "So you know what you're gonna say."

Mami: *Shifting* "Y-Yes, um..."

Sabrina: "OK, now don't move..." *Brings up a blob of grief*

Mami: *Flinches*

Sabrina: *Stops* "Mami?"

Mami: "I-Is... Is the Colonel hat really necessary?"

Sabrina: "Absolutely vital." *Nods* "Is there a problem, Mami?"

Mami: "I... I like my beret better?"

Sabrina: *Takes back Colonel hat-shaped blob of grief* "Oh..."

Mami: "I-I mean, if you want-"

Sabrina: "No. No, you're right. I'm..." *Fiddles with hat* "I'm nervous, is all." *Open arms*

Mami: *Hugs Sabrina* "So, it's OK...?"

Sabrina: *Hugs back* "Yeah, don't worry about it."

Mami: *Relaxes into the hug, before letting go*

Sabrina: *Smiles to Mami, then to Homura* "OK, we're ready. On your mark, Homura."

Homura: *Nods, reaches for her shield and turns it*

Sabrina: *Puts hat on Homura's head*

*Timestop ends*

Homura: *Paralyzed*

I advocate the direct approach.

[X] Explain the following plan and then enact it:
-[X] Erect a barrier of grief surrounding the room so that Ono's mother/sister won't be disturbed.
-[X] Tell Mami to be ready to restrain Ono with ribbons if she turns violent. Hopefully that won't happen, but it's best to be prepared.
-[X] Pull the grief from Ono's gem.
-[X] Homura resumes time.
-[X] "We regret the intrusion, but your life is at stake. That soul gem represents your soul. If it fills with grief, then you die. You are now a member of the team so you aren't allowed to die."
-[X] Explain how grief is caused by magic use and emotional turmoil.
-[X] Ask about the grief seed. Emphasize that she should never give a seed to Kyuubey because we can refresh it.
-[X] Demand to know what is causing Ono's distress.

Should we be making the decision whether to stay or exit before enacting any plans, unilaterally?

Ultimately, it would be like asking Firn what we should do, Homura probably won't be able to say one way or the other, and Mami might try to read Sabrina for what she wants, but just as a consideration...

That's... beyond direct. Not only would we be breaking into her personal, most inviolable space, but taking it over with our powers?

We've already broken into her house against her will and snooped though her personal things using time-stop. The question now is whether or not we're going to try to hide that fact from her.

We already asked and Homura deferred to us implicitly and Mami explicitly said that we were the better choice to talk to Ono.

[X] Are you sure, Mami? If you're not up to it, I'll do it.
[X] If Mami's up to it, nod. Suggest perhaps that we shouldn't just appear in her room.
[X] If Mami's not up to it, suggest leaving the apartment. Re lock all doors.
[X] Fly to Megane's window. Grief carpet. Maintain some distance. End timestop.
[X] Telepathy Megane:
-[x] Your magic expenditures are a severe problem. If we don't address it tonight, it will kill you.
-[x] Tell her to look out the window.
-[x] It is this important Miss Ono. Please come out.

I'd like to point out that asking her to come out brings us yet another update of nothing but Onoplomacy as we hover outside her window. Could Mura at least include what we'd be saying if she did come out in their vote? Perhaps some of Kinematic's talking points?

We're indecisive. I'm pretty sure what I vote for yesterday was the same as Mura's vote right now, but now I don't know. It's winning, so no pressure...

In case Mami accepts the speaking role, does she get to decide whether we do this frmo inside, or from outside?

Should we include talking points in case she comes out or refuses to? Maybe comment on her lack of grief seed and their importance maybe?
Yes? Maybe so that we don't end up with another update before we can deliver the Meguca 101? I don't want us to end up convincing her and then end up having to vote on what to say next.

In my personal opinion, I'd rather leave those things for next update. A stopping point based on Megane's reaction gives us a bit more flexibility to what actions we can take on the next update.

But if you guys really want them in then I'll put something in.

[X] Muramasa

I'm fine with stopping at waiting on Ono.

Kinematics vote is tempting. But maybe Ono will comply without resorting to that.

Not to be cheap, but I'm reminded of us threatening Kirika in order ot make Oriko talk, while we could have threatened the same to Oriko herself, instead. We kind of jumped a step, a rather important one.

  • Yokosuka is where some crazy gaijin made landfall and forcibly ended Japan's isolation. Dammit, Firn. Not that there was any real guesswork involved by this point.
  • Five years later Yokosuka became the birthplace of modern (or at least industrial) Japan. And Mitakihara is, IIRC, doing the rust belt thing. Can you say institutional inadequacy and/or failure?
Hah. I was wondering if anyone would ask why Yokosuka Middle School wasn't, you know, in Yokosuka.

Also, clarification - the way I interpret it, Mitakihara's industrial district is kind of run down, but they successfully transitioned to a more knowledge-based economy.

I had to take the line out entirely, for now. Mind started going in very weird directions, and now I can't come up with a replacement that I'm happy with. If you want to offer suggestions for any other side comments, please do.
Maybe, instead of emphasizing her powers, emphasize her role?

Oh my god, this is... difficult. I'm just vomiting words and losing all succinctness.

"Every single one of us could try to work alone. And make it, even, for a year or two or ten. But we don't; we work together. I keep our Soul Gems uncorrupted, and provide us with infinite magic; Mami's saved me many times, both in combat, and even more out of it; and whenever we can't deal with a problem appropriately, we can always count on Homura to bail us out.

"Sure, each of ourselves could be pretty strong on their own, but that strenght is nothing compared to what we can achieve together. If we want to protect those who are close to us, we need to rely on each other.

"Today, I asked to postpone our meeting with little to no warning. I really needed the time for myself, to deal with the sudden emergencys, one after another, and I thought: Ono'll live. I simply thought of every matter that called for my attention in terms of lives risked, and didn't consider anything else. For that, I'm sorry. You are also part of our team. All I can say, is that if I had received word from you that you needed help, I would have made time for you.

"But that's just it. I, we need you to ask for help when you need it. Every single time we talk, I felt I couldn't trust your words...
"The life of Magical Girls isn't... easy. When we made our contracts, our lives actually got a hell of a lot harder, and dangerous, and tiring. And that's before getting into the things Kyubey doesn't tell you...

"Ono, none of us, nobody, can make it long as a Magical Girl without losing something. It's a lifestyle that's just... too much for one person. So we are not doing that. We... rely on each other.

"I made my wish so every Magical Girl around me wouldn't need for Grief Seeds, wouldn't suffer the corruption in their Soul Gems leading them into self destructive depressions, and woulnd't... die fom it. Mami and Homura, they don't need me to keep their Soul Gems clean, but it's better this way, so they ask, and I do.

"Mami... I can't count the times she's saved me. Both from my own mistakes made out of pride, ignorance, and both during fights, and even more outside of them. She looks out after us, and brings us together, as friends, something we need more than ever now.

"And Homura, I don't know where we would be without her, but while I'm sure we would be alive... I can't say the same for our friends. So many times, she's just stepped in when we couldn't do everything on our own, and gave us the opportunities we needed, to keep going, without having to lose that something, that other Magical Girls can't hold on to.

"I want to be able to include you here, as part of our team, and perhaps, as a friend, so we can count on you, and you can count on us. But for that, we need to be open with each other: We'll ask things of you, and we won't expect you to comply every time unless you're in the middle of a Grief Spiral into madness; and we'll expect you to ask things of us, even when it might seem impolite, or unimportant. We need to rely on each other, ask each other for help...
"Each of us is a strong Magical Girl on our own. Alone. We don't work alone. I keep our Soul Gems cleans; Mami looks out after us both during fights and even more outside of them; Homura just literally saves our lives and that of our friends now and then. We... rely on each other, we ask each other for help, sometimes even when it seems unnecessary, or when we simply want to have a friend at our side.

"I want you to be a part of this. To be part of our team, even to be our friend. But that can't happen if we can't trust you to ask for help. Or to simply speak your mind. Earlier today, I asked to postpone our meeting because of a sudden emergency. I was trying to balance lives on scale, and I thought: Ono'll live. For that, I am sorry... You could have refused me. If you had asked, I'd have made time for you. Every time we talk, I feel I can't trust your words, and that's simply to big of a wall in between us. We need a measure of honesty, need you to both ask us when you need something, and to refuse us when you're not fine with something we ask of you.
"Alone, we fall apart. Each of us gives something to everybody else, be it my keeping our Gems clean, Mami making sure we don't kill ourselves in fights or social meetings, or Homura literally saving our hides now and then. We work together, and we can do that because we ask each other for help. That's the most important part: Our individual skills and experiences might be useful, but it's the fact that we tell each other when we could use help that makes us strong. We rely on each other. We want to rely on you, and for you to rely on us, but we can't do that without a measure of honesty, and we definitely can't if you are literally killing yourself before letting us know you are in danger."

Screw this, I'm gonna sleep now.
