So, the warning is that a "one-turn bad end" is very much possible if we are careless with our powers? (maybe with or without warning, hard to tell without context of what lead up to that omake)

Please keep in mind that he also said this.
In order, yes, no, his is actually broader and will correspondingly give broader powers.

I'm not going to screw you guys over on the Wish, because... well, I need to stack the deck in your favour. You're going to need it.

Ugolino's wish does not result in me spoonfeeding solutions to the players, or not directly, so I consider it fine.

Yea, Firn is not going to be an asshole about it, like, say, bad-ending us without warning for something we took reasonable care and precaution with*.

However, I think that the warning of that omake is that when it comes to our use of powers, that is one of the areas he isn't going to "pull punches".

*It is worth noting that for a few things, "reasonable care and precaution" is "don't mess with and stay the hell away from at all costs"; some things are just that dangerous.

He also said he wouldn't bad-end us over experimenting on a witch.

*cough* though that doesn't mean it is a good idea.

Btw Ono will probably blow us off on any verbal offers in current votes. Might have to start planning for that, but in the moment I don't feel like stalling. (though objectively Bandawagon is probably always the best vote)

[x] Ugolino
I gave you "Funny" so you wouldn't be so sad.

This vote ends with us finding out where Ono is, so we can go there whether she wants it or not, so... Everything else is more an attempt to not roll over her 'feelings' (stupid fragile feelings) and alienate her.

I gave you "Funny" so you wouldn't be so sad.
Of course it helps. :)

But now I'm seeing you're the only one who rated it 'Funny'. It's all 'Hugs'... SV, what have you done to me?

The problem is that Kriemhild Gretchen absorbing everyone into her barrier turns out poorly for those involved. Dedolere would probably do something similar - she wouldn't have the same range limitations as Sabrina, so she would absorb all of the grief. Including the grief that is a normal part of life. Smiles for everyone!
Non-ultimate Gretchen can never finish her quest to eliminate misfortune.

Dedolere, as an existence on par with Madokami, can finish her quest to eliminate grief. Except that she can't do that and still exist (made of grief, natch), and if reality exists without her someone might end up sad. And that would be terrible. The only solution is to use her power to eliminate herself and the multiverse (aka, that place where all the sad stuff happens. Also, where all the sad people live.)

Also: Y'know how angst-bolts to the brainpan stop Sabrina from taking control of familiars? Yeah, I doubt that would slow Dedolere down any; I expect she basically ascends because she gattais the witches. All the witches.

Just like Sabrina can never fulfill her wish of controlling all grief.
I suspect there are non-witchout ways for Sabrina's range to increase. Although I doubt it'll ever get to the point of all the grief anywhere before the finale.

As for Gretchen, it's more the way Kyubey salivates over her power instead of screaming in terror that convinces me she can't get all the misfortune.

Yeah, but Kyuubey is clearly an idiot when it comes to playing around with forces that he cannot control or even comprehend. In canon, he was burned twice for doing so - once by Madokami (who replaced his lucrative system with a much less lucrative one by eliminating witchouts) and once by Akuma Homura (who enslaved him). Just because Kyuubey isn't worried about Kriemhild Gretchen (even Ultimate Kriemhild Gretchen) doesn't mean that he shouldn't be worried.

This is sort of like what SV would do in those circumstances, be an idiot to try and get more power.

Residue processing pt. 11
Your lips tighten in a flash of irritation. Is she blowing you off? Judging from the frown growing on Mami's face, you're not quite alone in those thoughts, either. You exchange a look with Mami, and she shakes her head microscopically, her hair brushing against you.

Megane has no idea of what she's doing. Really no idea.

Either she's just this bitchy, or it's her pride, or it's her Wish... Really, you don't believe that there is something happening.

So for once... you think you're perfectly justified to insist.

"I see," you say, fighting to keep your mental voice even. "Nothing dangerous, I should hope?"

"Of course not," she retorts sharply.

'Of course not?' You raise your eyebrows at Mami, then Homura. A faintly sour expression flicks across the time traveller's face as she drops onto the sofa, crossing her arms patiently.

Or maybe that's impatient. You're getting better at reading her, but still.

"That's good," you reply cautiously.

"If there's nothing else, I have matters to attend to," Megane replies, voice hovering somewhere south of arctic. "As I'm sure you have, with your busy schedule."

... Definitely trying to blow you off, with a side order of 'being bitchy as hell'.

You frown, exchanging another glance with Mami. Her frown deepens, and she slowly pulls herself upright on the sofa.

"I think she feels insulted," Mami offers. "That we didn't honour our initial promise to see her."

"Feh," you grunt. "Do you think I should apologise?"

"It should help," Mami says. "But... she's being difficult on purpose."

"Yeah, I agree," you mutter. Steeling yourself, you speak telepathiclly to Megane again. "Miss Ono, I am truly sorry that I couldn't meet you after school like I said I would, and you have my deepest apologies for that. I hadn't meant to just blow you off like that."

"So noted," the girl replies, and falls silent again.

"... for goodness' sake," you mutter under your breath, rubbing at your forehead in frustration. "I take it you're not interested in going hunting for a Witch right now?"

"Why would I do that?" she counters.

You glance at Homura, who's looking increasingly annoyed. Even Mami looks displeased, an unhappy frown tugging at her lips. You blow out a breath, reaching up to tuck a wisp of hair behind your ear.

"Fine," you say. "But it's vitally important to keep your Soul Gem clean, for your own well-being. May I make up for not meeting you earlier by dropping by and cleaning off your Soul Gem and Grief Seed?"

Silence, for a moment. "No, you may not. As I said, I'm busy."

You grind your teeth. "It'd be barely a minute, and we can be there very quickly, if you want."

"I think that's all we have to talk about, Miss Sabrina," Megane replies. "We can meet tomorrow." With a distinct air of finality, she ends the call.

"Damn that girl," you hiss, your hands tightening into fists. Why the hell is Ono so damned petty? "She doesn't bloody know what she's doing."

Mami nods. "She does seem rather... dismissive."

"Homura," you glance at the black haired girl. "Do you know where to find her?"

"Maybe," she says. "I think I know roughly where she lives."

"Right. We're going," you say, pushing yourself to your feet and offering Mami a hand. "Mami, I'm really sorry, but... this is important, I think." You wish you could leave her alone for the snubbing, but you can't. Not really.

She takes your hand, letting you pull her to her feet. "No... I understand, Sabrina," she saves, giving you a wan smile and hugging you tightly. "You have to."

"Yeah. Yeah, I think so," you say. "Homura?" You turn to find her already headed for the door with a swish of hair.

A few minutes later, you're sitting on a Grief carpet, gaining height rapidly over Mitakihara. You find your mind wandering a little as you watch the city hum through its paces far below, blinking rivers of light flowing across the city. You could use Homura's timestop to get there a little faster, and Madoka and Kirika would probably make a diabetes-inducingly sweet couple but that probably woul-

You shake your head, dislodging that thought, hugging Mami into your side. You glance back at Homura, who's sitting on the carpet. She gives you a slight frown, raven black hair streaming in the wind behind her.

Whoa, bitchy much?

We should have listened to Homura, when she said that Ono isn't worth it :V
I really hope it's her power that's making her such a joy to converse with, because if that is her default character she probably will piss of the wrong person one day. Anyway let's save the idiot from herself.

If this is what Ono is really like, she's a strategic asset.

She makes Kyoko and Homura look smooth!

Edit: Onoplomacy. Oh no plomacy.

I couldn't meet youa fter school

So... Ono's gonna need to understand that alone, her life expectancy hovers intimately close to the time it would take Homura to slap a bitch, if Homura really felt like slapping a bitch right now.

To give her this unerstanding, in a way disallows grief spirals on her part, sounds like a rather difficult game. Ono's psyche does seem to be metaphorically made out of glass, and I think she won't stop herself from casting stones from it once she finds out just how very fragile she is.

Ono might not be very powerful, but she really is contract bait. I could see Kyubey specifically targeting her this timeline just to make more work for Sabrina... Kyubey... Well played.

Right, so the hard way it is then. Of course.

No matter how this goes, it's going to be an incredible headache. So ask Homura what's on her mind and maybe use timestop? It would make things faster and let us take a closer look at Ono. I wonder how we're going to be able handle this without ridiculously alienating her? Unless she really is in imminent peril. Which I still can't help but doubt a little.

I don't know which is worse, that is the result of a poorly thought out wish or she's just naturally that acerbic. I mean we have two save her if only because she gives a +20 diplomacy bonus to whoever we send in after her.

Ono Megane:

Appearance: Sky blue eyes, curly black hair.

Voice: A warm contralto.

Magical Girl costume: A modestly cut evening gown that bares the shoulders, sky blue in colour, like her eyes. Elegant high heels.

Weapon: An ornate, shimmering glassy staff. A ranged weapon, it activates by gathering sparks at its tip, before releasing bursts of light.

Magical Skills:

??? [Cosmetic magic?]: Allows every action done by Ono Megane to look prim and proper. Even frantic, fearful movements become elegant and contemptuous. Lowers her life expectancy due to its seemingly permanent nature.

Personal Skills:

Schrönödinger: Due to her ego being apparently as strong as glass, Ono Megane exists both as a Magical Girl and as a Witch, unless observed.

Oh no plomacy: Beyond other special brands of diplomacy, which tend to backfire, this one specifically aims to hurt oneself and others, achieving even more disastrous results than previously thought possible, and doing this purposefully instead of accidentally.

So, uh...question for the mob. How can we drive home exactly how bad Ono's situation is without bringing up witchouts? Because Mami is kind of along for the ride, and I don't think lesser consequences are going to bother the idiot as much as they should.

Easy. Tell her about grief spirals and how having a fully black Soul Gem leads to death.

Grief spirals specifically. That grief accumulates, let's say, 'exponentially', so while she won't die from it until her Soul Gem fills completely, the more it fills, the faster she'll accumulate grief, and the more she will want to accumulate grief, and die. She shouldn't let her Soul Gem fill to the midway point if she were alone, and not even a third if she's being cleansed by Sabrina.

I think we need to set some ground rules: Normal megucas need to hunt in order to live, so if she wants to blow us off when we're trying to keep her alive, she better start hunting and getting herself a Seed collection to have as a safety net. She can live independently if she can manage that.

But if she doesn't, whlie we're perfectly OK with megucas not wanting to hunt in order to live, that can't come without strings attached. If she wants to live off of Sabrina's power, she needs to make time for Sabrina whenever this one comes knocking to make sure she stays alive.

This is something worrying that has been brought up once or twice. We can't just eliminate the downsides of meguca-ing. The meguca system requires a limiting factor on the megucas, lest they forget how important their magic usage is, or they start using their powers against other people, since the other people can't retaliate and there's no consequences for it.

We're... imbalancing the system. The system needs balance.

A thought: With Ono being as fragile as she seems, we might have to accept this will go wrong. We're avoiding the worst immediate wrong of Scrhönödinger resolving in the wrong side of the meguca equation, but we're definitely burning some of what little goodwill we have with her.

She might become a problem down the line.
