We've told her we suspect Ono is the Glass Witch.

This from her:
Homura exhales a slow breath into her stew. "Her magic," she offers. "She has it running constantly."

Not much else, I think.
If Homura knows that Ono runs her magic constantly, then she has either been checking up on her regularly today or else she has had experience with Ono in a past loop. In either case she knows more about Ono than we do.

I think Homu is just good enough to figure this out in the one time she met Ono, specially since we put everybody on edge with our 'Interloper' paranoia, so she might have been paying extra attention.

Well, obviously Homura was able to notice that Ono was using magic during our meeting. We also noticed this. But I understood Homura to be saying that Ono is constantly using her magic in normal everyday life, which is not something that she could have inferred just from that one meeting.

Homura's got a lot of experience with magic; it's possible there's a tell for people who don't/can't stop their magic. Homura met at least one example in Oriko, that one timeline.

That's possible, I suppose, but I got the impression that Ono's composure/appearance related magic was under her conscious control. The first time we saw her (in timestop) she was visibly distraught and weeping, so (at the very least) the part that controls her appearance wasn't on when we first saw her. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that she had left it on constantly since then, though.

Well, perhaps her powers are under her conscious control, but her personality disallows her from not running her magic constantly, which would also count as not being able to turn off her magic.

From what we've seen, I'd say doesn't turn it off except in moments of great duress. She seems like someone who is deeply ashamed of her own self, so even if there was nobody else around to show a facade to, she would still want to 'disguise' herself with magic, as she's hiding from herself more than from others. /talkingoutofmyass

This would be a likely explanation for why Ono would have her magic running constantly, but it's not something that Homura would be able to divine just from a single meeting. Which is why I conclude that Homura probably has some experience dealing with Ono from a previous loop.

I get the feeling Homura doesn't know Ono at all from before this loop.

"Not very strong, then," Homura says, frowning in consideration.
She makes this assumption based on us pointing out Ono might be the Glass Witch. If she knew Ono at all, she wouldn't need to make half-assed comparisions.

Of course, after all the magical girl is quite different from their witch in many ways, including parts of their personalities.

Yeah, that's kind of odd. At some point I'd like to actually ask her directly what she actually knows about Ono and the Glass Witch.

Edit: maybe Ono contracting (and surviving long enough to meet Homura) does happen, but only rarely. And they haven't fought together any of the times it did happen, so Homura doesn't know how strong Ono is.

This reminds me, we haven't updated Mami and Homura on our 'premonition'.

Hope they forgot about that... so embarrasing.

You mean the interloper? There's nothing to be embarrassed about (or to update Mami and Homura on) apart from the fact that we still don't know who it was. Some people think that it was Sabrina, but I'm not convinced. Sabrina is a possibility, but maybe it was Kyuubey. Or maybe it was "Feathers". Maybe it was somebody else who slipped completely under the radar. The most I can say is that it probably wasn't Ono.

Photons flood into the world, kaleidoscopic colour bleeding through reality in wispy torrents.

You build. You guide the formation of structure, wrapping it around you as air and carpet and concrete. You can feel the apartment expanding around you, the building, and Mitakihara expanding out around you. Your Barrier accretes around the nucleus of yourself and Mami.

Your boots touch down on rug, and you can feel the soft fibers give way underfoot. Another presence at your side - Mami. Fingers vise tight on yours, arms wrapped around you, and noise in your ears. Noise that comes unbidden to your Barrier, something forei-

"-abrina! P-please. Talk to m-me. Sabrina?"
Well, that was a thing. I didn't expect that to happen, though I expected showing off the barrier a bad idea. (I thought the 'missing' half hour was either just Sabrina losing track of time the mundane way or just kind of enjoying the feeling of 'home' without the world impinging on her; less mundane, but still easy for someone else to pull you out of the reverie.

Mind, this hinges on the idea that witches don't really understand that they're witches, just that the labyrinth they created keeps them safe from the accursed world outside.

What I expected was that since, as I understand it, the heart of the labyrinth is the place where the creator feels they belong1, it wouldn't match up to reality for anyone other than Sabrina. The idea being that she's making a version of Mami's home that feels right to her heart, not one that physically matches the place; the problem is that Sabrina would genuinely be unable to tell the difference, while anyone else could since they'd actually be using their eyes (as well as having different feelings about Mami's apartment.)

Aside: That the heart of Sabrina's barrier looks like Mami's place2 is more than a little daawww~ worthy.

The differences might be as subtle as the difference between the movie and series versions of PMMM, or as blatantly obvious as the difference between the Sailor Moon anime and live action. Or, alternately, little details are wrong, like the poster on the wall above/behind the TV with the legend 'Remember: Only You Can Prevent Tetris' (and an appropriate picture) or the group shots in photos showing puella magi Sayaka, Nagisa, and Madoka.

There'd've been a chance Mami would have found the differences a good thing, but buried in witchstuff like that I expected a bad reaction. And Sabrina would be all confused because all those little details 'felt' right to her.

From what I've read (up to "Our Benefactor, part 19," as might be expected) the unintentional divergence from reality might still be a thing; Mami has so far been too distracted to offer any kind of critique on the barrier's actual form.

Ah, well. Catching up, though. Only ~200 pages behind, now.

  1. Another reason to try and keep Kyubey out of the barrier.
  2. At least to Sabrina, although I doubt Sabrina's damaged enough that the place is unrecognizable to anyone else.

... Dude.

It's not like Sabrina knows that many places, after all. And she was really quick to start calling Mami's place 'our home'.

Helping how?

Residue processing pt. 10
You blink at Homura over Mami's shoulder, faintly startled that Homura even offered. And you're tempted to take her up on that offer. It'd hopefully sort things out, letting Mami have her quiet night, while Homura sorts out Ono... Well that last bit's a problem, isn't it.

That's what you tell yourself, anyway.

Nevertheless, a huge smile breaks out on your face as you separate from Mami, still keeping her close to you.

"I... thanks, Homura," you say. "Thank you so much for offering. It's... really nice of you, and... I really appreciate it, I do. But I'm sorry, Homura, and sorry, Mami." You glance between Mami's disappointed look, and then Homura's neutral expression. "We've made Miss Ono wait quite a lot already, and I really should start making good on my word to her, so I really do have to do this personally."

You're not going full Gilgamesh again, you're not. Homura has known problems with social skills. And you did promise Megane.

... you are going to have to insist on talking to Megane in the flesh tonight, though, even if you have to be invisible to do it.

"I'd be happy to have you with us when we go, though?" you suggest. "If you want to, anyway."

Homura nods fractionally. "Yes."

"Alright, then," you say, smiling at her in thanks. "Mami... I'm very sorry, but we do need to do this."

"I know," she says, giving you a smile that's only slightly forced. "You wouldn't be you, otherwise."

"I guess not," you murmur. Sometimes you're not entirely sure that you are really all you're cracked up to be, but... close enough.

You huff out a sigh. "By the way, Mami, before we head out... do you still have that feather? The one that came out of my Barrier?"

"Um... yes, I think so," Mami replies. "It should be in my bag?" You follow her over to her bag, where she pokes around a bit before before eventually producing the Feather. It looks a little rumpled, worse for the wear for being stuffed into a pocket.

... really, it just looks normal. Rather larger than you'd expect of a feather, but really. It looks like a feather. It doesn't seem to be magical or Witch-y or Grief-y in nature.

Just to be sure, a thought summons a sphere of Grief, dropping down from the rooftops and scooting in through the window with a rustle of curtains. You take the feather from Mami and seal it in Grief, locking it away into another innocuous sphere to join the others. Absently, you check your pocket - you've still got Hildegarde's Grief Seed, sitting quietly there.

"Alright," you say. "I suppose we should prepare to head out?"

Mami nods, giving you a quick hug. "Let me go to the bathroom first?" she asks.

"Of course," you reply with a smile. As you wait for her, you collect your sling bag of Grief marbles and drop into the couch, kicking your legs out. Absently, you summon the Grief sphere containing the obrez to you and slip the cut down rifle into your sling bag, concealing it underneath the marbles. No point having it 'in case of emergency' if it isn't to hand, after all.

You shoot Homura a quick smile, which she replies to with an eyebrow raised a fraction of a centimetre. You smile broadens into a grin.

You hear the bathroom door click open, and you glance over to see Mami stepping out, plumping her hair drills. It looks like she washed her face too, at a guess.

"I'm ready," she says.

"Alright," you say, patting the couch beside you and raising your eyebrows. "Let's just check in with Miss Ono, then." With a thought, you reach out mentally for the girl who might be the Glass Witch - but not if you have anything to say about it. You let Homura and Mami listen in, too, the latter now cuddling into your side again. "Miss Ono?"

... Heh. Quantum Ono; simultaneous superposition of Witch and meguca until observed.

It takes a moment before she responds. "Hello, Miss Sabrina," Megane replies.

A touch of relief suffuses you. "Hello," you say. "I'm very sorry for the delay, a lot of things came up today. But we're ready to meet you now; would you happen to be free?"

"I'm terribly sorry, I currently have matters that need my attention," she says, voice frosty. She doesn't sound sorry at all.

[x]Oh. Okay.
-[x]Concern. Everything alright? What's the problem? Whatever it is- and we really do mean whatever- we really do want to- and probably can- help with it, no strings attached or anything.
[x]Sorry for making you wait earlier. Just...a lot's been going on.
-[x]Ask her where she'll be?
-[x]If she gives us the cold shoulder...
--[x]Ask Homura if she minds using her power.
--[x]Well...Um...We'll just swing by. We'll be right there. Don't be rude, but don't make it a request.
