@Sereg

Far, far too little emphasis on Mami and too much on the SCIENCE and the wording's too...impersonal and vague. It's effectively blowing off Mami's trauma to go play with the feather.

The entire purpose of the science is to prevent us from needing to leave Mami. And did you read the last part of my latest vote? The part in green? That's where I do most of the Mami comforting where I don't see this criticism applying.

For the suggestion: if Mami notices us picking up the feather, then there's no point in making it seem even stranger than it really is by acting like its a bomb. Basically, I feel the odds of it being OMG BAD END TRAUMA FOREVER are slim enouh that we really shouldn't make it any more attention getting than it already is. Just pick it up quietly and be done with it?

I don't see how what I do is going to make it seem stranger. Mami is not going to see the precautions other than making a box. That's it.

It's strange as fuck Sereg. And will require an explanation. I don't know what else to tell you. Not worth it. Not voting for it.

Apologies. Issues cropped up again. PMAS will continue when I can.

True, but we probably want to take this as a warning about going overboard with undirected, frivolous SCIENCE. The fact this was the first explicit sign of our main antagonist is probably a good hint that grief is not a toy.
A few points:
1. The first creation of the barrier was SCIENCE. This second time was not SCIENCE but rather an attempt to show Mami what we had already done. The barrier is potentially very useful (we've had a lot of discussions about how we can use barriers in battle or for creating the Grand Mitakihara Meguca Hotel), so showing Mami what we've done so far was neither frivolous nor undirected.
2. Nothing we did here was dangerous in and of itself. It just required thirty minutes of (unexpectedly) intense concentration.
3. We didn't see a feather when we collapsed the first barrier, but we did when we collapsed the second barrier. This means that it's probably not the barrier itself that produced the feather. The most likely explanation that I can come up with is that Homucifer (or whoever) was in the barrier with us at some point and she dropped a feather while she was there.

Obviously grief is not a toy. There are much more important things that we can be doing with it than aimlessly playing with it. But we should not be afraid of it, either. We have perfect control over the grief within our aegis and we have done some pretty amazing things with it already and ultimately we will break the system with it.

Found this in an old update from Mami.

"I've found my range seems to be restricted to a hundred meters out."

Mami gives you a surprised look, avoiding a protruding duct without even looking. "That's... unusual."

"It is?" you ask in surprise, shelving the thoughts of what you'll call the Kyousuke problem for now.

"Um... there are magical girls with a hundred meter range," she says. "Not too many, though."

Another side effect of Sabrina having stupidly high potential or something more meaningful? I don't think Firn'd tell us something like this by accident.

Another side effect of Sabrina having stupidly high potential or something more meaningful? I don't think Firn'd tell us something like this by accident.
Yes, we're still waiting on a good chance to ask about this. I think it was amongst the things to bring up right about now, but well... this happened.

Remember if we had made a more powerful wish ('fix everything', I think), our range would've been something like 5 meters with our power being flat out reality warping.

The barrier is potentially very useful (we've had a lot of discussions about how we can use barriers in battle or for creating the Grand Mitakihara Meguca Hotel)
I really figured Meguca Hotel would need to be an actual, physical thing in the future. It should be a place of relaxation, not a 'Witch' Barrier.

2. Nothing we did here was dangerous in and of itself. It just required thirty minutes of (unexpectedly) intense concentration.
It clearly was dangerous. If we really thought about it, we could have prevented this.

We ought to check the place of our last Barrier, and even ask Kyubey about it if we don't find anything there. And I find it more likely that the feather was created just now, by somehow mixing Witch Grief, despair and love, than that somebody got in just to drop a calling card.

I have a problem with the following line, but maybe there's just something I'm missing. Can anyone explain to me what this line is supposed to accomplish in terms of reassuring Mami:
-[]I...I've been an awful friend, haven't I? I keep hurting you, and it doesn't matter that I didn't mean to.

I just realized a small silver lining to our recent dark clouds. Falling into a trance when creating our barrier this time at least proves that the "Let there be light" witch runes in the vote last time were not what caused us to burn so much time creating a barrier. That means using witch runes as a programming language is probably safe.
I'm not sure what you mean by a "programming language". If it was the concentration involved in creating the cityscape that caused us to spend so much time, then wouldn't the witch runes be purely cosmetic? Or maybe the witch runes were involved and we simply didn't didn't notice:

@Firnagzen were the witch runes for "Es werde Licht" etched around the entrance to the Barrier this time?

I really figured Meguca Hotel would need to be an actual, physical thing in the future. It should be a place of relaxation, not a 'Witch' Barrier.
It's just that creating it would be easiest if we can do so inside our barrier where we have so much control. And we want to figure out a way to make our grief not feel quite so witchy anyhow.

Edit: we don't have the resources necessary to create a hotel in Mitakihara. But we do have the resources to create most of what would be needed for a hotel within our barrier. And we can also create a transportation system within the barrier which can lead to the hotel from anywhere in the world (as long as our range is not limited within the barrier and the barrier is capable of having more than one entrance).

It clearly was dangerous. If we really thought about it, we could have prevented this.
Obviously we screwed up by not realizing that we should have warned Mami first. But my point is that creating the cityscape is not dangerous in and of itself. Because some people seem to be getting scared of barriers at all, but the barrier was not the problem.

We ought to check the place of our last Barrier, and even ask Kyubey about it if we don't find anything there.
Both barriers were created in the same place.

And I find it more likely that the feather was created just now, by somehow mixing Witch Grief, despair and love, than that somebody got in just to drop a calling card.
This is possible, I suppose. But do note that love was not in high supply at time. We were too busy focusing on creating the cityscape and Mami was too busy panicking; she was panicking because she was worried about us, but that's hardly unique. Post-PMMM Homura was unique because the very act of despairing was tied to the hope of seeing Madoka again and the memory of all of the loops she had spent to save her.

I now find this idea hilarious. Hilariously effective, too.

"When I make the Barrier, it'll be nothing but an empty void inside." Explains Sabrina. "I have to actually 'create' things everytime I make the Barrier."

Homura looks faintly curious, but otherwise just nods.

"Now... Last time..." Sabrina shifts in place, "I 'created' an universe for my Barrier. That might be why I was in trance for so long." She looks down for a moment before continuing. "I'll try to make something smaller this time, so this shouldn't take as long, but..." Sabrina looks firmly at Homura. "I can't be sure. I might leave you waiting for who knows how long, so I want you to know that I really appreciate this."

It's Homura's turn to shift uncomfortably, but once more she simply nods.

Sabrina smiles what she hopes is an encouraging smile, before sighing. "Here we go." With a wave of her hand, a mass of deep purple marbles shift and create a hole in reality.

Sabrina throws a quick glance at the girl at her side, but Homura's eyes don't betray her feelings, no sign that the presence of the Barrier disturbs her.

With no further ado, they step inside.

And halt. And stare.

Sabrina furiously rubs at her eyes, trying to ignore the look Homura gives her, which manages to qualify both as anxious and severe at the same time, but when she looks again, nothing's changed.

Standing in that black void in front of the two girls there's a mundane looking piece of a brick wall.

On the wall, a decently well made graffiti drawing of a girl looking entirely too much like Homura with an entirely too smug look on her face stares back at them. Not just that, but the drawn girl's hand holds a long smoking pipe, which points to the side of the drawing, where it reads: "Homu-Homu was here lol". To top that off, where the full stop should be, there's instead a long pinioned black feather stuck on the wall.

It takes a few seconds for Sabrina to react. With a pleading look, she defends herself from Homura's accusing eyes, "I swear I don't know what's... I didn't think... I didn't..." She bows her head. "I'm sorry. This isn't my idea of a joke." A wave of her hand and the wall disintegrates, the feather floating down to the 'ground'.

Homura holds her gaze for a couple of seconds, before looking away with a long suffering sigh. "it's fine." She says.

Standing in that black void in front of the two girls there's a mundane looking piece of a brick wall.

On the wall, a decently well made graffiti drawing of a girl looking entirely too much like Homura wearing a completely scandalous dress winks back at them, lips puckered and hand raised as if blowing a kiss. Not just that, but spiralling away from her palm is a tiny love-heart with equally tiny devil wings and a long, sinuous tail which points to the side of the drawing, where it reads: "Don't forget, Mommy loves you! =3= ~ <3". To top that off, at the foot of the wall sits a bento wrapped in pink cloth and tied with a bright red ribbon.

It takes a few seconds for Sabrina to react, first going pale, then flushing a deep, deep red all the way to the tips of her ears. With a pleading look, she defends herself from Homura's accusing eyes, "I swear I don't know what's... I didn't think... I didn't..." She bows her head. "I'm sorry. This isn't my idea of a joke." A wave of her hand and the wall disintegrates into a cloud of grief that returns to orbit around its master.

Homura holds her gaze for a couple of seconds, (determinedly not noticing a small pink box drop from the cloud to be hastily hidden behind the guilty-looking foreigner's back) before looking away with a long suffering sigh. "It's fine," she says.

'Don't ask, Homura. Just don't ask...'.

Quick, poll guys. Should I take those both or one of those lines out or leave it as is?

Mind, it would be hilarious if every enemy we make drops something for us to pick up and we fall for it every time. Sad, but hilarious.

That just raises further questions... I doubt it's the fact that both Barriers existed close to one another, if at different times, that made the feather appear, but it's another thing to keep track.

I don't know if that's even possible, though considering magic, it could be.

Here's a thought: Making the Barrier entrance smaller made it feel witchier. Would making the Barrier entrance bigger make it feel more or less witchy?

I figure it's like a flashlight, with the light source being all the Witch!stuff inside the barrier coming out of the only opening. If we compress the entrance small enough, can we make a laser? I think that if we made the entrance sufficiently large other people'd probably have a hard time sensing it, but that would require the entrance to be... rather large, I think, considering normal Magical Girls can sense barriers on the other side of town using their soul gems.

Ah, that could be the case. But I'm thinking there's a 'right' size for the Barrier entrance, and changing that makes it feel more witchy. So perhaps making the entrance bigger also makes it feel witchier.

How would a gigantic Barrier entrance look, anyway?

Feather appeared on dismissal, though.
I suspect that the feather appeared because it was within the barrier and that all of the physical objects within the barrier get dumped out when we collapse it. One of the tests that we were intending to do on a barrier was to stick a rock inside, collapse the barrier, and then see what happens. We still need to do that test in order to confirm that this is the case (probably with two rocks to see if they get shifted in space).

Actually, we can see magic, too, so no need to ask.
We already asked Firnagzen if it felt witchy and he said no. I imagine that he would have also mentioned it if it had felt magical. If it does have magic, it's probably just a small amount that we'd have to be close and concentrating on it to detect.

We want to figure out a way to make our grief not feel quite so witchy anyhow.
I don't know if that's even possible, though considering magic, it could be.
It probably can't be done with grief, but it might be doable with magic. This is one of the things that we have been hoping to accomplish with our enchantment practice.

Here's a thought: Making the Barrier entrance smaller made it feel witchier. Would making the Barrier entrance bigger make it feel more or less witchy?
Good question. Definitely something to test.

Normal Magical Girls can sense barriers on the other side of town using their soul gems.
I don't think they can. That's why girls have to patrol around in order to find witches rather than noticing them when they first pop up. It has even been mentioned that our sensing range (200m) is rather far.

Unfortunately, she'll also sense the Witch-stuff simulating all those precautions like she would if Sabrina put an ignited thermite flare in her pocket.

Which is exactly the same thing she'd feel if the box was made of iron, wood or cardboard. So, I don't see how she'd know we were treating the feather particularly cautiously.

Yeah, the science...kind of sinks that vote in my eyes in that it sidelines everything else and doesn't seem necessary.

The purpose of the "science" is to put the actual science on the sidelines and get on with the more important business of tending to Mami. I'm doing this so that we don't have our comforting Mami session interrupted.

Obviously we screwed up by not realizing that we should have warned Mami first. But my point is that creating the cityscape is not dangerous in and of itself. Because some people seem to be getting scared of barriers at all, but the barrier was not the problem.

I'm unconvinced of this. If we are rendered completely catatonic every time we make a barrier, that's a pretty huge problem. You've compared it to sleeping, but Firn has given us a lot of indications that we're a light sleeper, whereas this makes us incapable of reacting to Mami calling out for us desperately while right next to us. Which tells me that nothing is stopping something from walking over and ganking us. Or for all our friends to be taken out while we don't even notice.

Well you're succeeding. It reads to me as saccharine and adorable.
My thoughts on it are something along the lines of

Well, at least I managed roughly what I was aiming for.
Though, on containment note: All that witchy stuff and no barriers of absolute interdiction?
To be honest, I did consider it, then remembered that there was an argument over what we should technically call it. Which I didn't want to go through again.

Honestly, I'm reminded of that time when Oriko left us a note and we went foolhardily picking it up, trying to avoid other seeing or noticing it. I kinda want to ask Mami if it feels magic, for example (her whole panic aside).

Nope - if we use just undifferentiated solid grief, without telling it to emulate anything, it lacks the strong witch signature but still has the physical properties to hold off anything up to a determined Kyouko.
Fake steel or tungsten or corundum or iridium-graphene nanolattice or metastable positronium or whatever, on the other hand, is witchstuff.
I'll clarify this bit.

Diffuse Grief, in its gaseous form, is very nearly invisible to both the eye, but can be somewhat sensed puella magi senses.

Dense-ish Grief, in gaseous form, is visible to the eye, magical or otherwise, and fairly obvious on magical senses.

Solid Grief is visible to the eye, and fairly difficult to sense.

Witch Stuff is aaaaaaaaaaā.

I'm aware that using undifferentiated grief won't feel witchy, but whatever substance we emulate with witchstuff will feel equally witchy. So, yes. Mami will realise that we are making a box, but she won't know anything about the box other than the fat that it isn't made of undifferentiated grief. And we often make stuff that's not made of undifferentiated grief.
