It's Hildegard...

You nudge it with your Grief manipulation, trying to elicit a reaction from it. Sudden, it twitc-

Despair lances through your mind, a powerful, sledgehammer blow that rips right through you. Useless. Why did you ever imagine you could help? Now Mami and Homura are looking to you, and you're going to fail an-
You pause for a moment- and slam your will down. Mine.

Pain.

Pain, raw and jagged, rips into your mind in a flood of white-hot agony, pounding upon you in a tremendous, sledgehammer blow. Your back arches, your breath driven from your lungs in a single, harsh scream. The searing attention of something vast upon you.
I wonder if there's anything to this, or is it just words.
There's something that might be a Witch's core, albeit one so minute, so fractional that it's nearly imperceptible. It'd... be fair to say that this is a nascent Witch, which, well, it is. It feels... incomplete, incredibly so, something essential to it missing.

Only way to find out is to see what happens when we feed a familiar grief marbles. A failure there means that it probably needs to eat souls to become a Witch with a seed.

Ten pages! I was beginning to worry you guys lost your touch!

Kinda refreshing to see being on the other end of the suffering scale. But it's not something I'd welcome to see again.

Buk!

Also, I'm starting to get the feeling that this is a fundamental property of soul bound grief. Those thoughts are too personalized to us to be from the witch itself. It feels more like a ray of despair than any sort of telepathic connection to the witch or the familiar.
OR maybe when we tried to take control of the familiar, the universe interpreted that as "Dedolere takes control of the familiar" - we got those personalized despair thoughts because Dedolere woke up.

[x] Examine the familiar to see if anything changed after our disastrous attempt to wrench control
[x] Use the seed Homura gave us. Thank her for it.
[x] "I'm fine. It's just some feedback."
[x] Apologize: you didn't expect that, and you won't do it again. Thank them for watching out for you.
[x] Reassure Mami as best you can. Cleanse everyone's gems too.
[x] Proceed with the witch hunt. Let Mami take center stage, but feel free to bring out what you've learnt to do with grief. Flaming swords and rays of disintegration from your fingers, that sort of thing.

[x] Calm down. Let them know you're OK.
[x] Cleanse using Homura's offered grief seed.
[x] "So, note to self: Never do that again. Was not expecting that."
[x] Give a short explanation of the feedback. Thank them for watching your back on that.
[x] Jokingly: "Don't try that at home, kids."
[x] Make a pirate cap. "Right! Ready when you are, cap'n! Tally ho!" Gesture forward with the cap, then wear it.
[x] Maintain a chipper attitude to push away uncertainty and get back to fun showing off.

[x] At the inevitable Mami Mom-mode:
-[x] Lean in and whisper to her, "Thanks for worrying about me."
Current state of both votes

The main difference is that Kinematics adopts a more flippant attitude, they are otherwise almost identical.

Why do I feel that this is gonna end up with our witch taking human form, splitting off from us, and headed off to cause chaos?

At the rate we're headed, that might turn into 'Dedolere splits off from us and, fed up with our brain damage mental mayhem, opts to move to America and start a coffee shop so that she never has to deal with us again'.

In red: what I don't like about each vote.

Could you elaborate on what you find objectionable about the examine option? It seems perfectly reasonably to try and find out exactly what caused the reaction, and taking a look has proven to be fine, as long as we don't grab it again.

I dunno, just more once bitten, twice shy than anything else. Don't want to worry Mom and the limpet anymore than we already have. Still better than being flippant though, so

Serious random thought.
Since we won't using grief power to enhance puella magi, what if mundane weapon instead?
Edit : actually, nevermind.
