So should we try honesty?
"Familliar/Witch mind. Not a nice place to be. Not trying that again anytime soon."

I think really the issue is trying to "poke" things that are "grief cores" or proto-"grief cores". The worst that happens when we "YOLO grief hijack" "barrier stuff" seems to be pissing off the witch some. I guess that means only "autonomous" "witch stuff" (animated by a "grief core", proto or not) is a risk of mental "feedback"?

If Mami or Homura asks what happens, can we give some sort of explanation involving how familiars seem to give strong mental "feedback" if "poked deeply". Seems to be an easy way to explain in a way they can understand without worrying Mami much more. This explanation should help further reassure them that nothing bad is happening now (familiar we "poked" is dead most likely), and that we know better than to repeat what we did later on.

Also, Firn, can we do standing order votes?

If so, can we add something like:
[] Standing order: If something seems like it is a "grief core", do NOT poke it, do NOT try to control it, do NOT try to "telepathy" with it; AT MOST, cautious, non-invasive "analysis" using grief and magic senses. EXCEPTION: Grief seeds fully or almost fully drained of grief.

Though Sabrina may have enough "character" now to realize this herself.

Uhh, that's exactly what we did with Hildgarde. Cautious, non-invasive analysis with our grief senses. We still got the exact same reaction anyway. There's just something about the grief core that reacts violently with our grief senses, regardless of how cautious we are being.

Of course we couldn't capture the familiar. We need to damage it first. :p

[q] "Now for my next trick..."
-[q] Attack grief 'core'.

Hmm, true, but the familiar's core didn't seem to "feedback" until we poked the core. We were still able to "probe" the familiar itself just fine without issue. Maybe proto-"grief cores" are less "sensitive", and take more effort to get the "feedback"?

EDIT IN FROM CHAT WHERE I EXPLAINED IT CLEARER:
Yea, I think we were able to "probe" without issue because it was a "baby". It took until "taking control" before we got the feedback. With hildegarde, just deep inspection was enough to trigger the "feedback".

But yea, probably do NOT want to science that to figure that out. Mental feedback seems to be one of the few things that can legitimately threaten Sabrina, let's not risk that.

Let's save grief experiments to things without autonomy (like barriers) and things of our own construction...

[x] Examine the familiar to see if anything changed after our disastrous attempt to wrench control
[x] Use the seed Homura gave us. Thank her for it.
[x] "I'm fine. It's just some feedback."
[x] Apologize: you didn't expect that, and you won't do it again. Thank them for watching out for you.
[x] Reassure Mami as best you can. Cleanse everyone's gems too.
[x] Proceed with the witch hunt. Let Mami take center stage, but feel free to bring out what you've learnt to do with grief. Flaming swords and rays of disintegration from your fingers, that sort of thing.

Also, I'm starting to get the feeling that this is a fundamental property of soul bound grief. Those thoughts are too personalized to us to be from the witch itself. It feels more like a ray of despair than any sort of telepathic connection to the witch or the familiar.

Mad science means never stopping to ask "What's the worst thing that can happen?"
Seems... appropriate for the occasion.

Actually with some preparation it could be, theoretically, made safe. Give our Soul Gem to Homura and have her surround it with grief seeds. Maybe even our Clear Seeds. That should keep the grief down and she can time stop it out of range if absolutely necessary.

That said it is absolutely something we should try and avoid from now on. If only for the trauma it causes Sabrina and those around her.

It could also be that the witch felt us trying to take control of its familiar and retaliated.
Since familiars hatch into their original witch, the incomplete core we felt could be an incomplete copy of the witches soul.
Since witch and familiar both kind of share the same soul, we maybe directly connected to the witch instead of only the familiar.

You state aimlessly at the elaborate fractal edges of the Barrier entrance
Should be stare I guess.

Actually we've never used a normal grief seed before. We might be able to learn something from using it conventionally.

edit: Also we need to find a stray familiar and try to find the differences between it and the goddamn chicken.

"Reassure Mami as best you can." isn't going to work if she thinks we're just going to do the same stupidity all over again the moment she isn't looking. That'd be perfectly in keeping with what she knows about us, and we need to say SOMETHING along the lines of "we're not doing this again" to make sure she doesn't worry later. We're going to have to poke the Witch cores, yes , but there's no reason to let Mami think we're idiotic enough to rush in and repeat this little fiasco.

[jk] Yep, from now on, before we probe still "active" grief cores (nascent, witch, or otherwise), we will now shield both our head and our soul gem in tin foil first. Perfect protection!

Ugo, you are seriously overreacting. Calm. Down.

Evidence points towards Mami's supposed fears as valid.
