Yow.

[x] Calm down. Let them know you're OK.
[x] Cleanse using Homura's offered grief seed.
[x] "So, note to self: Never do that again. Was not expecting that."
[x] Give a short explanation of the feedback. Thank them for watching your back on that.
[x] Jokingly: "Don't try that at home, kids."
[x] Make a pirate cap. "Right! Ready when you are, cap'n! Tally ho!" Gesture forward with the cap, then wear it.
[x] Maintain a chipper attitude to push away uncertainty and get back to fun showing off.
[x] At the inevitable Mami Mom-mode:
-[x] Lean in and whisper to her, "Thanks for worrying about me."

It wasn't just taking control of it that triggered the despair feedback. If we had prodded the grief core at all it would've triggered it. The science vote would've triggered the feedback loop around

----[] See if you can figure out how it's behavior is dictated...if you can make sense of it, try modifying its programming so that it will obey and/or help us, rather than the Witch.

This line, assuming the dissection doesn't trigger it. And frankly, after this close call, I don't think we should be pursuing any kind of familiar experimentation in the presence of Mami for, well, the rest of the quest, really.

Why do people keep having problems with us just cutting lose and having fun?

More seriously, those two ideas aren't exclusive. We can encourage them to experiment with things they've wanted to do and show off our new weapons at the same time. They aren't conflicting things.
It's idiotic to try and have fun when Mami's just seen us fall over screaming and probably isn't in the mood for it/distracted?

@Kinematics
I'd bandwagon yours but that line about Mami really bugs me. Taking it out.

Trying to take over is totally what set it off:
You take a deep breath and reach out with metaphorical fingers, steeling yourself to try and grab that core. You pause for a moment- and slam your will down. Mine.
--[X] Begin dissection. Start by analyzing its general structure...
---[X] Does this thing have a core? A soul fragment, or something like it, that controls the rest?
---[X] Is this pure Grief, or is their Magic involved, too?
----[X]If they're both there...what purpose does each seem to serve?
--[X] Try to find whatever gives it intelligence. Whether that's a core, or something else.
----[X] See if you can figure out how it's behavior is dictated...if you can make sense of it, try modifying its programming so that it will obey and/or help us, rather than the Witch.
--[X] If you have any luck with this, try making one of your own...use this familiar as a template, but use your own Grief and/or Magic. Make sure it's loyal to us and obedient.
Okay, the bit in orange might've tripped the same landmine, but the rest seems worthwhile.

It's because Witches are still dangerous and we shouldn't forget that. We can have fun doing other things. Half my posts are basically "This sounds fun. Let's try it!"

This seems like the best option so far.

My suggestion for approach will be either faking our own emotion to calm them down, or just don't do anything just say you okay. Because honestly, i fail to see we can assure them that we fine.

The winning vote was to try and wrench control away directly. The Science!vote would have had us doing a lot of passive observation and then trying to flip a metaphysical switch to try and get it to obey us rather than the witch. If such a switch exists, that approach probably would have been safer than trying to assume direct control. If such a switch does not exist, then it definitely would have been safer (because we wouldn't have done anything).

And my vote on what to do next (slight modification of Cannongerbil's vote):
[x] Examine the familiar to see if anything changed after our disastrous attempt to wrench control
[x] Use the seed Homura gave us. Thank her for it.
[x] "I'm fine. It's just some feedback."
[x] Reassure Mami as best you can. Cleanse everyone's gems too.
[x] Proceed with the witch hunt. Let Mami take center stage, but feel free to bring out what you've learnt to do with grief. Flaming swords and rays of disintegration from your fingers, that sort of thing.

This experiment was to dangerous to ever risk doing it again, but we might as well learn what we can from the results.

Maybe instead of that line, we could tell both Mami and Homura that we'll discuss further possibly risky experiments with them and they could help us point out flaws. I imagine that if we ell them what we are about to do they won't freak out as much, if omething goes wrong.

The rest seems fine.

Honestly guys, it's like you're expecting to gain control of an unliving army of eldrich horrors formed from the despair of teenage girls without having to make sacrifices. Really now, what's a bit more trauma between friends? I mean honestly, Sabrinas history so far seems to be made up of Mami, trauma and tea.

Okay okay, fair enough then. Let's get whimsical

I agree with @Muramasa, we shouldn't bail out on SCIENCE! because of this incident. Sit down with Homura later and figure out how and why shit went so horribly wrong, then plan something out to prevent that from happening.

Uhh...I don't think this will work. I'm fine with the rest of it, but that bit seems, well, like we are making light of the situation. We can't do both that and explain to them exactly what's gone wrong, it just doesn't mesh. If anything, doing so would just make Mami more uneasy, as though we aren't taking it seriously.

It's trying to lighten the mood after explaining we're not doing the dumb again. It's fine.

Also, we're evidently missing something. It's been commented that the voice doesn't really match Sabrina- so if it's not our self-loathing/Dedolere, who's trying to talk to us and why is it happening when we're high on grief?

Well, other than the initial panic, we seem to have mostly calmed down. More worried about how this is going to impact Mami, honestly. Glad we didn't try Assuming Direct Control on our own.

@boonerunner Good point about Science!vote. We should save it for a later, supervised experiment.
[X] boonerunner

Is there a particular reason we shouldn't try to remove all the grief AROUND the protoseed? Like, I can see why people don't want to try it, but...

...I mean it's right there. Rending it apart and leaving just the protoseed isn't really that different from straight up blasting the bugger.
Good idea. We should try this.

I kind of figured if we got grief-bombed again that our additional baggage since the first attempt would prevent us from doing anything about it.
Kine's vote seems a little too flippant, which I feel would just make her worry more. She'll catch us if we try to bullshit her and pretend that wasn't too serious.
[X] Cannongerbil.

While I don't think we should feign a more serious reaction, we are kind of doing that "appears to have the survival instincts of a suicidal lemming" thing again.

Not really. Cannon vote FAILS to make it clear we understand it's a bad idea and we're not doing it again and doesn't really reassure them beyond word for word "reassure them". Kine's vote is much better.
