But there's a big difference between us being one of ten targets, vs us threatening their whole operation and getting all ten armies aimed at us.
And there's a difference between putting a knife to their economies threat before they really get the ball rolling, and doing it in a way that will just as likely not cause a war, and suffering through constant piracy we could've avoided when we need all the wealth we can get.
All the more reason to suppose that their system is unstable. They copied this from us, they don't have the experience or numbers or social foundations to make it work sustainably. There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.
I can't just stand aside and take that risk, this isn't like the Lowlanders, where we could sit in our hills out of range of their depredations, this is like the Lowlanders being dropped where the Western Confederacy where, right in our range.

Patience is all fine and good if you don't have to really bear the affects of waiting it out

*clears throat* In my opinion:
It is correct to believe that the Trell will become more problematic as time passes.
It is correct to say that at present our lack of offensive naval technology makes opposing them now more risky than it will be if/when we gain such.
It is correct to say that if we do nothing now we probably won't have time/motivation until the Dam is done.

anyways...

And for the weebs:

If we have the naval technology, this would be a no brainer for us. But it's not. We are on megaproject support, and we have to hope, pray that our subordinates focus on it.

Seems to me like east post+boats plus mercs next turn would be as good preparation as any?

Before they get the ball rolling? They're way past that! They've subjugated or enslaved all their neighbors and sold the proceeds! They have mercenary armies running around everywhere! They're already rolling. And they can send all of them at us in one turn if we do something to make them panic, like threatening the tin that keeps their mercs equipped.

I think it's almost exactly like the Lowlanders. We can sit on the east side of the sea, and we really won't be worth their time and effort considering how dangerous we can be on our own turf. We survived just fine before we discovered the Trelli and we don't need them now. We have other trade partners, and megaprojects, and expansion options.

Do the Trell switch between renting their mercs out to the opposing side?

They switch them out when someone can no longer afford their services, which sometimes is to someone else, but again, they get the idea enough to not let the mercs that might be able to be bought out anywhere near anyone who might be able to buy them out. Hostages are often also involved, in that they will keep the families of mercs out campaigning for them "safe" in the comforts of Trelli.

Do our villages tend to prevent people from building really high, yet feasible apartments? What philosophical justification do they use, if any?)

Generally going past five floors is frowned upon for being a pain to go up and for being a fire and disease hazard. Plus most consider it not worth it.

We need twelve more votes, but who are we going to convince?

Green river will feel the need to. Hatvalley and Westwall though... probably not. WW is probably focusing on reaching the mountains to their west so they have an anchor point. Hatvalley is either trying to edge out HK by expanding around their border or spreading into the nearby valley in response to the banditry and disorder occurring on their border.

You know, since the East Trade post is losing, I suggest all of those who voted for it switch over to the North trade post so we can actually beat the East Trade post vote. Don't be a spoiler.

Ugh. I'm actually not voting for North, because I think it's just as likely to kill the Red Banner as the Trelli are, and it will definitely tie them up right when we need them to fight pirates. The only reasonably non-suicidal options I can see are East or mercs (or nothing) and those are way behind.

@gutza1 Sorry to be disunited and all, but I actually think North may be even more damaging than West.

You can vote for both iirc.

A) Again, how will the RB be useful against pirates?
B) I don't think they will die as long as we support the TP sometimes.
C) Damaging in any sense beyond the loss of RB?

E: Response to old question: TE + Boats offers less tech dev than NTP + boats due to the NTP's provision of new wood. Which would, incidentally, increase their survival rate and probably quicken their velocity toward security, if that terminology is at all sensible. (Progress? Progress.)
E2: Also, personally, while I won't hate the ETP should it win it's also just a boring option.

@Lilithium except cats, arguably. Two cats can be cute or they can fight and be pouty.
