I really like the new trait it should make it so that we get new innovations more quickly especially when paired with love of wisdom because the artisans will be competing with each other to make the best products they can.

I agree, but would like to note that currently we do not have standard way of assessing who is the best. So it's within realm of belief that the competitiveness and reward turned some people into sabotaging and theft to put out their competitors.

Some kind of open competition may affect this, but I'm unsure if it's good or bad.

Also, focus on getting the very best may impact our ability to supply large amount of stuff or people.

Well I wouldn't be because now we know about them and can avoid them.

Why is "picking an option that turns out to be poor/wrong" narratively unsatisfying?

I can say that I wouldn't be dissappointed with such an outcome. Saddened, naturally, but not disappointed.
Because Alchemy is the study of turning one thing to another.
Study Alchemy - Materials can be made to transform their form through special treatment. What wonders can be discovered in this process?
What treatment was she investigating when she decided to create a big dust cloud and set fire to it.
Here I mean narratively unsatisfying as we are expecting that we are meant to predict what the potential reward is based on the description given and from that we decide if its worth doing. This is the building block of quests.
Having the answer being a dust explosion ruins expectations because rather than learning about dust explosions we could likely learn something very basic about alchemy that just happens to make a lot of dust in the process.
It means that we can't predict the likely outcome.
I can't give any reason to argue that this isn't a trap option like VoidZero proposed, but I also can't give a reason that diplomacy isn't a trap option when they capture our young hero and hold her to ransom.

I'll refer you to the Texas City disaster of 1947

I can never seem to find any info on how big that explosion was in tons of TNT, but 2100 metric tons detonated in the first explosion. Ammonium nitrate releases about 42% of the energy, gram for gram, that TNT releases. So the initial detonation of the Texas City disaster was equivalent to about .882 kilotons of TNT.

I'm also seriously off topic.
It seems like it was 2.7 Kilotons of TNT equivalent based on this list.

Largest artificial non-nuclear explosions

If we get gunpowder this early, it will probably takes a couple of centuries to develop. Once we're there, the steppes is basically ours to conquer.

Well.... gunpowder happen to lower the cost of sieging a wall, and you know where i'm going with this. Of course it's difficult to make as it requires quite a bit of infrastructure. But the explosive powder doesn't help with solving the issue of managing large amount of scattered tribes roaming due to poor soil.

I can't give any reason to argue that this isn't a trap option like VoidZero proposed, but I also can't give a reason that diplomacy isn't a trap option when they capture our young hero and hold her to ransom.

I wouldn't put it as a trap option, it's very likely to give us good things; but wanted people to know that is possible to get other stuff.

It can be made from copper nitrate which does form naturally, albeit rarely, though it wouldn't surprise me to find it in our copper mine tailings.
Nifty.

Can you link me to the process that does that? If it isn't too much trouble.

E:

Guys, we use parchments now! We have something not clay tablets! How long we have this?
Uh whut.

*goes too look*

E: Okay we've done it since we finished the Library I think.

Has anyone brought up Greek Fire yet? That could be just the thing to let us compete for dominance of this sea with the Trelli.
Greek Fire burns on water. There would have been much more panic about the fire that ignores water if that was the case.
Martial is really only dangerous at negative stab if we go stab 3 we should have no worries about martial acting up
Its dangerous if it doesn't have a target, the Hats in this case volunteered, it dangerous because the economy is involved. bad rolls mean exciting things happen. Stability 3 doesn't protect you from too much martial on its own... though it would make them far more targetable.

We don't have to get to stability 3. I propose we spit out a March and do a festival. This gets us 1 stab, and gets us out of the danger zone at the same time.

The main uses for gunpowder, at our current level of metallurgy, would be mining, fireworks, and sapping.

No. Expect a fast burning powder until people have refined the recipe to be more explosive.
We're looking at fire arrows and seige tools not something that you'd need an explosion for.
AN does not aim to satisfy, he aims to fill lakes of salt.
Sure, however if he were going to be unfair about it people would get sick and quit long before page 2200.

This is what we've got about her death.
Not died or collapsed, just sort of sat down and looked off into the distance. Taking the scroll from her father's limp fingers, Rulwyna looked at it and found news that her mother had done something in her studies that had resulted in either the gods smiting her or demons getting loose, because the compound where she worked looked like it had been struck by lightning repeatedly.
If we had details about what she'd been working on we'd know but that applies to everything, and its very easy for the Naptha to just not fall in the water.

I still maintain that a Hero dying to a dust explosion when she was trying to do something else entirely would be a critfail, which can't happen.

Know what would protect our martial from losses that would cut our econ out from under us? A new Hero working on the army.
