You know I do not think the Ymaryn make art for art's sake which is both good and bad, good in that we do not have resources being spent on things that have no purpose except to look pretty and bad because we do not have any defining music, or literature or even an art style sure we have the mega projects but those are made for practical purposes.

Next up, what does Ymaryn philosophy (Ymarynism? Crowism?) look like?
Hmmmmm... tricky.

Trying for humor!

Shaman watches a bird crap on someone's head.

"Wait, why did that happen? Is Crow fucking with him?"

Shaman pauses to think and look around. He spots the bird roosting on a building corner which has also been covered in shit over a small amount of time.

"Okay... The bird seems to shit wherever it goes because that's how it was made... Are you telling me Crow that some birds merely shit where they sleep? I must meditate upon this revelation!"

So many deep interpretations in that last sentence! :V

Medicinal wines exist, and can be used as a disinfectant. It also helps your digestive system!

The problem is that early wines had a relatively low alcohol content as it takes some selective breeding to get the vines to be the high-performance varieties we have today. The same holds true for the yeasts to a lesser extent.

To get decent disinfectant out of this you'd need distillation and that requires a whole lot more tech. Granted, you could dry the grapes out a bit before pressing, but that's also an innovation we are lacking right now.

Wines real use right now would be traveling provisions like the Romans used. But that might be a lesser problem as we already know about boiling water.*

If you want wound disinfectant, try honey. The absurd sugar content is actually detrimental to bacteria. Also, mead.

*And holy crap, that's gonna be big once wars start. Our armies won't shit themselves to death, unlike the opposition.

What does Ymaryn art look like?

At a guess, Ymaryn art is probably fairly austere with a tendency to minimalism. We lagged behind in those more esoteric ventures for hundreds of years, and even now, our culture likely pushes such things towards a more simplistic bent, though no less meaningful for it. You probably wouldn't see Egyptian murals or Greek frescoes anywhere e.

There might be fairly elaborate depictions of nature or certain warding 'spells.' The only major example we are given is the meeting of the Dead Priests and the People when they gave us their collected anatomical knowledge. We were told the meeting was depicted on the walls of Rainbow Trail.

These seem very in character to me. These pieces specifically relate heavily to trees and stars and also incorporate Celtic elements such as knot structures.

This is also something I find likely given the Ymaryn religious beliefs and their similarities to the native peoples of the American Northwest.

Meet crow:

Combination:

Crow Mask:

This one is a raven mask of the Salish tribes of the American northwest.

I suppose it's obligatory by this point, but in my opinion, the Ymaryn still resemble the elves of Tolkien's middle earth to an astonishing degree. I would expect their attitudes towards art to generally tend towards graceful minimalism that incorporates trees and stars.

Tally!

Older wines actually had higher alcohol content than modern ones do. And we will never get better fermentation/wine tech unless we do wine things =v

We lack all those things because we've never started doing the Wine tech tree. I don't get how you can point them out as flaws when... it's like you're saying 'we dont have them now so lets not bother getting them ever!'. It's illogical and defeatist.

With a city our waste production has likely increased exponentially, we should probably expand blacksoil production soonish.

Most likely. We have shared the cure to cholera twice with the Thunder Speaker, Highlanders, and Xohyssiri, now but whether they will remember it is up for question. They didn't seem to after the first time we did it.

@pbluekan Like the Art pieces, especially the Combination piece and the first Crow mask. Where did you get that mask image?

Not sure about that one. My guess would be... yes due to acidity of acetic acid. The more acidic the more powerful a disinfectant but also potentially the more damaging to the patient.

Hmm. I understood that quote as saying that the book of the living was hung up on the walls.
The two are not mutually exclusive.

Yeah, it will work if you can get it to a sufficient concentration. 5-6% is enough.

Obligatory Safety Edit: Don't use that on wounds, especially large or deep ones. I don't really know what it would do to your insides, but large amounts of acetic acid in your blood isn't a good thing. The only reason isopropyl alcohol is ok is that it evaporates quickly and our bodies are very able to break down small amounts of hydrogen peroxide.

Thanks for the analysis, but I still don't see how you came to the conclusion that literally every single point of centralization loss from provinces must be solved via New Trails, which your analysis depends upon. Certainly some of it must be solved via that, but your analysis means that we're not allowed to do anything to raise centralization except New Trails, which seems unlikely.
Well:
I see it more as a case that Centralization dropped as a side effect of More Provinces means less connections, but the main issue this caused was insufficient trails. I consider fixing this to be the more important part of New Trails than raising Centralization with New Trails(not saying Cent is not important, it really is, but raising it can be something other than new trails. Sad that it conflicts with these other things though, I really wish we could separate these two problems), that's why I at least want to go for them since insufficient connections has caused us persistent warnings and issues in our civ since we started.
This. New provinces means new settlements. New settlements which don't have roads to them because there was nothing to build a road TO previously.
The Centralization is a secondary concern and more often an obstacle.
Knowing our civ and looking at the fact that we do not even have professional entertainers I think very simplistic and utilitarian Except for religious art those actually have to be artistic.
We got boosted taxes on luxury and art products, so yeah.
Our art is likely similar to the Japanese style, muted on most things other than religious art and symbols of office.

El Searcho Del Google. Literally just googled 'crow mask'.

Hmm. I understood that quote as saying that the book of the living was hung up on the walls.
The Xohyssiri themselves had actually decided to send their own delegation to the People, and while it was not quite the mythical moment still enshrined upon the stone walls of Rainbow Trail

This implies that the meeting itself was depicted. Also I highly doubt they would hang up priceless and fragile stone tablets on the wall of a holy site. Remember that the tablets themselves were very finely carved with the letters and illustrations filled in with gold. Not something that is ever just left hanging. Especially when you consider that the contents are rather macabre and generally go against most of the people's ideals. Remember, the reason the carrion eaters were the group of shamans specifically charged with the information, as they are specifically set aside for work with the dead and dying.

@Academia Nut do we still have a Death Taboo?

Hey @Academia Nut I think the thread would appreciate some solid information for these questions:

What does the Ymaryn Art look like? Can you point us to real life approximate examples in order to help visualization?

What are the specifics of an average Ymaryn's physical appearance? Are there differences between a full blooded Stallion Marcher and a Southerner?

What types of clothing do they wear in recent times? What types of designs are stitched into it?

Can you share with us any pieces of apparel or adornment that are specific to the Blackbirds and/or Carrion Eaters?

How do our women accessorize? How do our men accessorize?

E: What does an average home look like in Valleyhome? What does the average home look like in a non-city locale? What is the most prevalent shape in their overall architecture?

Annnnnd I think that's all for now.

In all honesty the Ymaryn are probably known for their beauty.

The Ymaryn do not have malnourished people like other Kingdoms, and they are known for working hard, leading to healthy fit bodies. This is only compacted by our people's awesome diets (Veal FTW) and their advanced health services, which would lead to relatively smooth and healthy skin.

Our massive forests would most likely lead to a paler skin tone than the other Kingdoms we know of right now, something that is only reinforced by our valley and hills, which add extra shade and protection from the sun leading to a lighter skin tone.

Something you guys also haven't factored into the people's appearance is the affect of dyes.
The Ymaryn are the main source of the dye trade in this region of the world, that means that it's likely more common and cheaper amongst our people. This combines with the fact metal and hygiene awareness is more common leading to more 'managed' hair styles, to give our people a relatively striking appearance to the common foreigner.

They would see this richly dressed, well groomed, cleaned person. Someone who looks extremely healthy and with the fit body of a near noble, with pale smooth skin.

Overall we look goooooood. :ogles:
