You do not rifle through a sealmaster's seal loadout if you wish to live.
"Yes, and pointy on five ends," Hazō grumbled. "I'm going to need a new jacket, and she shredded half of my remaining storage seals." He reviewed the damaged papers mournfully. "Just lucky they didn't do anything weird when they failed, but looks like I'm not getting the good pots and pans back."
Huh, I misremembered that. Turns out that was Fifi.

Jashin damnit, I shouldn't be making these comments while distracted by laughing at GoT.

Hm. If the specific policy in place is a "right of first refusal," a sealmaster clan could easily game that system by holding all seals back in the clan reserve until a moment when the state is relatively low on cash (for example, right after payroll day), then 'bomb' dump all seals at once. Unless the state has enough liquid cash to buy every seal (and still have enough to run govt left over), the government would have to authorize all remaining seals for resale. This is even easier if you coordinate with other sealmasters to do it at the same time, and it's almost impossible to properly define and punish this behavior without seriously invasive violations of clan privilege.

So what I'm getting from all this so far is that (very tentatively, subject to whatever QMs decide):
1. If we have a mortgage that is big enough to matter, we can turn it into something useful as well(reverse mortgage, housing for clanless, etc).
2. We are probably making a lot of money from seals (or we will be soon). The actual rank of a sealmaster matters little in the value of his seals, it's all about what seals he's making. Hazō and Kagome can make skywalkers, which are the most expensive/useful seal, and therefore a seal that would count in the area of 'jonin sealmaster' in Rihaku's analysis. Therefore, we have the theoretical output of two jonin sealmasters, moderated by the fact that most of the seals we make are used instead of sold.

Edit:
Sealmaster Labor @ 200 days / year
Jounin: 16.8 million ryo / year; 84,000 ryo / day; 1 seal @ 60 seals / day = 1,400 ryo
Chunin
: 5.07 million ryo / year; 25,350 ryo / day; 1 seal @ 60 seals / day = 422.5 ryo
Genin
: 1.69 million ryo / year; 8,450 ryo / day; 1 seal @ 60 seals / day = 140 ryo
Since what seals are made matters more than rank (Jiraiya's normal explosives were still just explosives, for example), I would guess that the types of seals specified are as such:

Jonin = Skywalkers and other high level seals. They are expensive, valuable, and require a good amount of sealing skill to be able to learn.
Chunin = This is pretty much anything that is less expensive than jonin seals but more rare than explosives/storage seals. An example would probably be air domes and earth domes.
Genin = Explosives and storage scrolls. Probably alarm seals too. These are easy to learn, and pretty much every sealmaster can make them. There are probably some other weak/easy seals in this category, such as night light seals.

I think we're looking at the mortgage all wrong actually. If we actually have a kajillion dollar mega-estate, we can have Kenta and Naruto tagteam to fix it up in a weekend or two after buying the raw materials. After that, we may as well invite the Shimura clan to come in and rent some of our space, as well as get every competent yet poor clanless ninja out there to move themselves and their families into some of our side houses and work for us on retainer.

I'm sure Nakano, his parents and his 9 siblings who all sleep in the same 1-2 rooms will very much appreciate this.

It's not even adoption, they just live with us now.

Don't bother buying the raw materials, just cut down all the chakra trees and use them for building materials. :p

Well, you can pull out money from the reverse mortgage equal to your equity in the property less financing costs, so it would depend on how many months you've held it already. If it's 4 million ryo per month and you've held it for 3 months then you'd have 11.8 million or so (plus the down payment) in cash from the loan, diminishing by 4 million per month until you decide to default. If you've held it half a year, you'd get 23.5 million or so. You can get 80% of a pangolin gold payment x the number of months you've held the estate + the down payment on the estate, assuming an entity liquid enough to finance this loan.

KEI: So how're you gonna get your debt plan through?
HAZOU: I guess I'm gonna finally have to listen to you.
KEI: Really?
HAZOU: Talk less. Glare more.
KEI: hm
HAZOU: Do whatever it takes to get my plan on the council floor.
KEI: You know, Hyuuga and Inuzuka are merciless.
HAZOU: Well. Hate the sin and love the sinner.
HIASHI: Gouketsu.
HAZOU: Oh sorry sis, I gotta go.
KEI: but--
HAZOU: Decisions are happening over dinner.

How does an outcast, traitor, son of an heiress and a
clanless, dropped in swamp hopeless and planless,
who ran from this, hunted by Leaf and Mist,
Become poised to guide both, into Uplift?

reflexive check for invistext
I actually have an addon that turns SV invisitext into a black box that displays when you hover over it.

The addon's name is Stylish, which is a more global css-editing addon, and a quick google of something like "Stylish SV invisitext" should get you the relevant module.

Reaaaaly handy when an author makes frequent use of it, pretty convenient for unexpected random usage of it.

Yes, screw what the Tower is paying for things, I want to know at what price the Tower is selling

I don't see why they'd be selling military seals. That'd just be a needlessly convoluted form of taxation.

Yeah, I assumed Sealing was insanely dangerous to learn without guidance, and required both a specific knack/mindset AND a personality type suited to it. Early sealmaster attrition rates when they were first figuring sealing out must have been insane.

Maybe Kagome's emphasis on safety has just made him a much, much better teacher than we realised, and most new sealing students are expected to die pretty quick?

EDIT: Could it be possible for there to be some sort of attrition of storage scrolls, or some other force that's taking them out of the available pool? Some ongoing process that most scrolls have to go towards, and can't be reclaimed from?

Sealing is insanely dangerous to learn even with guidance. It has the single highest fatality rate of any ninja specialty despite sealmasters almost never leaving the village, and that's with ninja normally not being accepted to even begin learning until they are chuunin.

Imagine trying to learn programming, but you have to use your own randomly generated bare-metal language literally nobody knows all the rules to, and the rules keep changing, and if your program doesn't compile correctly you and the next few city blocks get mummified by rabid cabbages.

Did you manage to write a working program? Great! Now every time you want to run it you need to retype the entire thing from memory, and sage help you if your finger ever slips.

Any society that failed to use chakra for economic expansion (assuming productivity of fully utilized chakra is within 1 order of magnitude of productivity of mid-tier industrialization) would be massively outcompeted by a society without such taboos. 10x more food = 10x more population base = 10x more ninjas. This means not just more jounins but 10x chance of getting an S-rank prodigy. A minor village that rids itself of such a taboo even by accident would have a good chance of growing into a major power.

It's possible that the Malthusian arms race between villages has left minimal spare talent dedicated to research in this field; if so, even better for Hazou, as this would be low-hanging fruit he is ideally positioned to capture.

Scorch squads and the escalation to open war. It's a crab bucket problem.

This comes up a lot, and I figure Hazō will have worked it out by now through looking at Jiraiya and the products of other sealmasters' efforts: Kagome is not terrifying. He's an average sealmaster who spent ~15 years living in the wilderness thinking about explosives.

Jiraiya seemed pretty complimentary, and child Kagome is portrayed as downright prodigal. I've been assuming he's a high-functioning autistic savant.

-and the interior of a hidden Kagome fortress has fewer distractions than a Swiss patent office.

Don't just rent to the Shimura clan.

Rent it to the other clanless who we can't yet afford to adopt. Start a fuckin' Kagome's Academy for the Gifted Elect on the side. Don't just cut down the lumber, tame the forest slightly and turn it into a rentable private training ground.

Remember, kids: renewable income, not influxes!

I don't expect this to be remembered this time either, but pretty much the ideal job for Mari would be running an inn/tavern as a front for a spy network and gossip collection. A tavern needs a brewery, and a winery, and the basement is full of distillation equipment.

I swear to Jashin-sama if we introduce pyramid schemes next

I suggested tontines.

Hazou can't make skywalkers. He became the blademonster summoner when he tried. He can only make blanks for Kagome to infuse due to his bloodline.

[x] Poll: Let Hazou Listen to Kagome's Forbidden Lore and Duel the Grue Until Economics Make Sense

It's like a hiatus, except instead of interludes the QMs write our attempts to extract actionable forbidden lore out of Kagome and get around the antimeme, all in the course of a single extended conversation. I'm pretty sure we can do it for three OOC weeks, and only take up ~6 IC hours.

@eaglejarl, @Velorien, @OliWhail, would you be fine with it?

What about you, Grue, are you okay with it?
