They know there's a danger of running into an energy field bigger than their heads, and that's part of why they're sending a scout force. If it becomes clear that the scouts ran into something which casually nommed them there's a good chance that they'd simply decide, "Let's not go that direction."
In any case, when a barely subluminal firefly is hurling petatons of boom at you from a couple AUs away it's kind of hard to notice the tail.

Interception won't work, because they're coming in two waves. If one suddenly vanishes--presumed eaten by the locals, it'll mean the second--actually threatening wave will be more willing to go scorched earth--or just not come and talk about it, which raises attention.
