This honestly sucks so hard. Like wow this is actually truly disheartening for the quest, it seems like we literally can never catch a break. I get as the main point of a quest there should be challenge, but this is fucking insanity not caused by our own mistakes or the action of others.

Just generally, what was our last Critical Success? One that equaled this level of "oh you rolled so everything changes" but in a good way?

It's one thing to disagree with me, but it's beyond the pale to insult an ethos that I hold dear without attempting to engage with it and insulting the millions of those who hold on to it. If you have nothing productive or respectful to say, then keep your mouth shut. All you're doing is putting your own ignorance on display.

I just dont deal well with "higher powers" and their earthly disciples constantly socking me in the jaw and then *expecting me to be thankful for it because they didnt go harder on me*.

Got enough of that from "my" Catholic Church already, you know?

I know that in your mind, quotes like that "humbling and soothing", but for me they are pretty much the opposite.

Okay um, after seeing this this, I would have said what has already been said before, but I'm not going to add to the negative atmosphere that's going around right now.

I'd have to go over the turn results but off hand I can't think of any crit success that had even close to this level of impact.

There usually like, extra public relations boost, extra income from action, loyalty boost from hero, new bonus action unlocked, action more effective than expected.

I'll look and see later if we have any "Holy crap!!! This changes everything in a super great way" crits.

The only thing that comes to my mind is Spark, and that was the confluence of four separate National and Personal actions.

I don't share stuff because it's "humbling and soothing", but because I think it is true and reflective of an aspect of reality. Given the immense disappointment from the action, I thought people could use a reality check. It's especially true for a forum game based on dice rolls that we are not entitled to successful actions, that probability and chance can and will screw us over like it did here. Failure because of not beating the odds in no way diminishes the hard work and good judgment that went into planning the turn to begin with; I think we can take pride in that much at least.

Yeah, would it be possible to just... pretend we forgot about Ludivine's mechanic entirely as a result of the Council being a completely new thing? I'd be fine with promising to never remind the QMs of anything ever and/or definitely doing the 'Remove Flubber' Action next Turn as recompense.

Seriously, Ludivine was one of the people who Vetoed the damn thing! A couple more bad Turns like this and people are just going to stop caring. We can't play risky, because then we get screwed over by our risky plays, and we can't play conservative, because the dice hate us and we get screwed over anyway! People are going to start throwing their hands up in disgust and either stop caring about the Opinion meter and things like it, or start blowing everything on all-or-nothing gambits out of spite against the dice. I'm half-considering it now.

I mean, when I read that, my reaction was a slight wince. That's not good. That's a sign I've come to expect some kind of sucker-punch whenever a Turn is going well, which means a) the bad stuff just won't have the impact it's supposed to, and b) getting numb to one aspect of the Quest on an emotional level will start affecting the whole thing.

It's not about "entitlement to success" and "reality checks" - it's about "seeming wortlessness of everything you do" and "getting retroactively punished for mere human flawedness".

I refuse to be meek and submissive in the face of that - a big reason I am not keen on the "blissfulness" the vast majority of religions have to offer.

Hang on a second. Flubber is explicitly listed as one of the risky actions where we do a fallback action if we fail, specifically Diplomacy. Does that not happen until next turn?

So, I have no authority whatsoever here, but I'd like to encourage everyone to urgently chill.

It is one thing to express frustration, another to do so repeteadly and yet another one to move from there to expressing oneself in ways that are hurtful to others. I am inclined to think that the last should be avoided whenever possible.

As a casual reader who rarely if ever comments.. this did hurt. I was feeling ok about this turn a bit sad at jumbas oops but. Yeah. This hurts. Ow.

Five actually. And I would say it doesn't count at all for a crit changing everything in a good way.

We got these two crits.

--[x] [Martial] Upgrade Normbots to current standard (Ludivine)
1d6=3 Absent Minded does not activate
DC 65 (Reduced by XP)
84+21+15+20+2=142
Critical Success!

To be Continued in Interlude: Spark

--[x] [Stewardship] Repair Normbot hubs (Phineas and Ferb)
DC 110 (Reduced by XP)
91+24+38+3=156
Acceptable Success

To be Continued in Interlude: Spark

But spark was almost entirely about AI getting cracked and the musical doing well. The positive results were exclusively from the AI and musical actions, with the exception of this bit here.

Phineas and Ferb have repaired your Normbot hubs to full functionality! Your Normbots have given your Paramilitary Mongol Corps an additional +3 to all rolls against crime in Doofania!

So the normal action was repairing the hubs. But I'm not sure if the plus 3 is from the crit or from the normbots not being broken anymore and the crit did nothing.

And nothing at all was listed coming from Ludivine bringing normbots to our modern standard let alone what we got from the crit.

So... yeah. Spark is definitely not a example of good crits doing a lot. It's a example of good crits doing almost nothing.

As far as the Ludivine situation goes, I feel like the best option is to publicly disavow her and then work behind the scenes to negotiate her release with the explicit understanding that she is never getting a position of authority ever again.

I am not crazy! I know she swapped those files! I knew it was Exotic Vehicles, not Flubber. One after the ODI. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just – I just couldn't prove it. She – she covered her tracks, she got that idiot in HATEBAGEL to lie for her. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? She's done worse.

Doppelgangers! Are you telling me that she just accidentally researched Coffee Machines? No! She orchestrated it! Ludivine! She vulcanized flubber! And Doof saved her! And he shouldn't have. He took her back into his own firm! What was he thinking?

She'll never change. She'll never change! Ever since she was cloned, always the same! Couldn't keep her hands out of the research archive! But not our Ludivine! Couldn't be precious Ludivine! And she gets to be a scientist!? What a sick joke! I should've stopped her when I had the chance! And you – you have to stop her! You-

I leave for a little bit to take care of some things in my personal life and this happens. This fucking happens, honestly when I first read it I thought it was some cruel joke! Now we've lost one of our units, our reputation is ruined, and there's nothing we can do about it because of someone doing a retroactive active role out of fucking nowhere and having one of our units go rogue and do something she was explicitly against IN THE SAME TURN!

Why can't we have a good turn?

Friendly remember that your contemporaries have done worse and people forget about it after a year.

Xanatos was arrested and did time for his actions during Awakening.

Shego committed countless crimes with Drakken. At least one per time she showed up.

Shere Khan sold fusion power to Thembria in this quest!

Formulate a plan, make some deals, and you'll be fine.

(Insert a joke about IRL companies getting a slap on the wrist over crimes and attrocities here. Pick your favorite.)
