In my personal experience, if you abandon a defensive line to go do something else and that defensive line has the potential to crumble, then you best hope whatever it is you are leaving it for goes super well or you'll be in more trouble.

The problem is that defensive line has possibly already been breached and the "something" in this situation is the pivotal event of this entire fight. If Demona gets her hands on the artifact inside it's probably not going to matter how much the defensive line holds

I don't think she just autowin the moment she obtain artifact. In that case prophecy would have been much more grim and foreboding. And if she claim artifact and start her ritual or whatever she need to do next, Xanatos will definitely call for us then. I think it's easier to defeat enemies one after another instead of deciding it all in one big brawl with Pack and Demona and all her other minions. Especially since it does not seems that artifact will directly increase her martial power, so we can afford to let her take damage on Xanatos traps first and attack her later, when she is weakened.

This doesn't meant that letting her grab the artifact isn't dangerous.

As an example, I think there was speculation earlier that it was the praying gargoyle from the show? The powerset includes animating stone gargoyles and "protection of gargoyles from harm". Now, I can't find how exactly it works, but that's dangerous considering the horde of gargoyles currently battering the walls.

Edit:
Especially since all she has to do at that point if she manages to grab the artifact is run away

Here's the wiki link (not sure how reliable it is, but it's better than nothing). If what I'm reading is accurate, we may be in trouble if this is what Demona is after.

You're forgetting about Amur.

Which is one gargoyle on our side against the equally protected Demona at best and the horde outside at worst.

Edit: I will admit, at this point it's impossible to know for sure what the artifact is. But my point was even if it doesn't directly powerboost Demona in combat, it's not necessarily a good idea to let her grab the thing.

That´s one reason why I was hoping to persuade Dracons goons to come with us, making this a hopefully far less costly *coordinated* retreat.

Yes, sure, if she obtains artifact there will be complications, but I think that as long as we deal with her support beforehand we still be able to beat her. For example if it's really Praying Gargoyles then her gaining invulnerability change little since she already immortal, we just switch to restraining spells to deal with her then, most of the gargoyles horde will be destroyed by this point, and Manchatten Clan can deal with rest since if I am not mistaken they are too supposed to become invulnerable, and animated stone gargoyles is just more cannon fodder. My general plan would be to deal with Pack first and if Xanatos managed to protect artifact until then to gang up on Demona, and if not then look at the situation and if it seems that with artifact Demona is too strong then go stealth route with Kitsune making us invisible for example and waiting for the right moment to strike, and save the day. Enemies like her usually most vulnerable when only one step from triumph. On the other hand trying to stop villain from gathering all components of doomsday weapon basically never works. Demona surely has high tier stats, whatever bonus from artifact spear, auction ring and Coldstone support. I am worried that if we are first to the scene, standing between Demona and her prize, she will pass through us like knife through butter. I don't think that in the end she will actually win, but it will up to Xanatos contingencies to save the day then. It's even possible that by then Pack will reach our position and we will be forced to actually do our job and deal with them instead of participating in final assault on Demona.
