Uhhh, guys? Madoka already knows about our metaknowledge. We told her during the sleepover Saturday, before Sayaka arrived.
Right. I forgot.

Relevant quote:
"I knew them before I met them," you admit. You fumble for Mami's hand, interlacing your fingers and squeezing tight in reassurance. "I knew all of you. Mami, and Homura, Sayaka, Hitomi... and yes, you, Madoka. I knew Oriko and Kirika and a handful of others as well."

Madoka makes a squeaking little noise, eyes going absolute huge and twisting her fingers together nervously.

You hold up one hand - the other one's in a vise grip around Mami's. "Not... not so in depth, just... I knew who everyone was, when I woke up in that alley. I-" you swallow. "I knew you. Sayaka... everyone. It was a... shock, I'll say that much. I knew of all of you, but I didn't remember anything behind me."
(Conversation follows into the update next to that one).

So... how much does Oriko know about metaknowledge? She keeps giving us green tea to help our memory. :V

Then we have this:
"It- it's fine," Mami says, shaking her head. "Just, it's just one day and I want..." Her shoulders slump. "I j-just want to spend time with y-you. And Miss K-Kazusa."
Mami's big issue seems to be that it's going to be keeping us away from her and Kazumi for a couple hours.

Actually, this is probably something to address: Mami is acting like Kazumi's going to disappear forever again after this visit. We should probably do something about that. Like, before Kazumi leaves, make plans to fly over to visit with the Pleiades next week after school, do something to reinforce to Mami that friends are there.

...What? No, that's not what stressed Mami out at all at lunch.
Mami's issues at lunch are entirely and completely unrelated to Kyouko. They started before we ever mentioned her, and their strength was directly related to Mami's interactions with Kazumi.

Is this how people have been reading that? The hell?

No. Lunch happened, Mami started off shakily and rapidly improved to be totally content + happy by the end of the meal over most of two chapters. Then we brought up Kyouko, trauma kicked in, Mami broke down, and then she concluded that on the chance that she might not see the Asunaro girls again, she had better make the most of today. We presented her with long-lost friends and then reminded her all about Kyouko, of course she was going to end up skipping to spend the whole day with them when we did something like that!

You beam at Mami, wrapping your arm around her waist. She sighs happily, and cuddles closer. The sun is just warm enough to be comfortable without being hot, and you're pleasantly full from that delicious lunch, and you have Mami at your side. You're... allowed to be happy.

You'll have to interrupt it eventually, but you can spare a few minutes to soak it in - just about everyone's in some state of food coma, anyway. Even Homura seems less dour than usual, and just satisfied.

"That was super delicious," Madoka says, leaning back on the bench. "Thank you, Mami and Kazumi!"

"Yeah, thank you!" Sayaka echoes, setting off a chain of heartfelt praise and thanks.

"Ah... Sabrina helped too," Mami says, blushing and shaking her head.

"Not that much," you say, smiling at Mami.

"Mami's a fantastic cook!" Kazumi says, beaming.

"See? Everyone agrees," you say.

"Thanks, everyone," Mami says. She leans against you with a quiet, happy sigh.

"Say, Mami?" you murmur telepathically as Sayaka strikes up a conversation complaining about Miss Saotome moving around homework submission dates or something.

"Mmm?" Mami asks, tilting her head so she can look at you.

"Um... I didn't quite think things through, and I scheduled Sayaka's training for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday," you say. Well, you did, but you thought that Sayaka probably wouldn't want to do Saturday training sessions. "Um. Do you think I should reschedule?"

You can feel the jolt of tension that runs through Mami's body.

"I- w-whatever you think seems better," she manages.

You hug Mami a little tighter, and she presses close with a little noise. "No, Mami. What would be better is you being happy."

"I don't- I don't know, Sabrina," Mami whispers. "I- I don't."

Out of the corner of your eye, you watch Madoka nudge Sayaka and Homura. Sayaka nudges Hitomi as they all fall silent. Kazumi seems to have noticed, too.

These are your friends, but perhaps you should have done this more discreetly. Well. Too late for that. You needed to talk to everyone after talking to Mami, but...

"Just-" Mami swallows, hunching her shoulders. Trying to make herself look smaller. "Just make the decision."

"Would it be alright if I accompanied Sayaka for the training?" you ask gently. "Kazumi and everyone else will still be around."

"That's- that's fine," Mami says, swallowing.

You exhale, and look around. "Guys, could you give us some privacy?"

"Of course!" Sayaka says, jerking to her feet with alacrity. "We- we should probably get going, anyway. The bell will ring soon."

"Yeah!" Madoka says, tucking her lunch box away and hopping off the bench. "Um, goodbye Kazumi, Umika, Kaoru! It was very nice meeting you!"

Hitomi and Homura rise more sedately, and you all exchange farewells. Madoka gives you a quick, anxious smile before hurrying off with her friends.

Kazumi smiles at you, dimples showing. "We'll go explore a bit," she says.

Mami makes a little noise, curling on herself as the Asunaro girls leap off the rooftop for the next building over. "I'm sorry."

"No, don't be," you say, turning so you can hug her properly. "Mami, I... I'm not you. I don't understand what it feels like. I know what happened, but I can only guess what it feels like. But... I'm here for you. Alright?"

"I know," Mami whispers, nestling into your arms. "I- I'm sorry, anyway."

"Then I'm sorry, too," you whisper. "I'm sorry I have to bring up these painful things. I don't want to leave you out of these, I don't want to take control of your life." More than you already have, anyway.

"I trust you, Sabrina," Mami whispers.

"I know," you say, burying your nose in her hair. "But it's not right for me to dictate everything for you. It's not right for me to make decisions about your relationships, past and present, or your friends. I won't do that. I won't... I won't stifle you like that."

"I'm sorry," Mami says, shaking her head with the barest movement side to side.

You fall silent for a while, letting Mami recover her composure. You find yourself stroking her back slowly, rubbing soothing, absent-minded circles around the tense muscles between her shoulders.

The school bell rings. Mami stiffens in your arms, but doesn't pull away.

"Mami?" you prompt gently. With the school bell already rung, she'd be late to class, but still probably get off with nothing but a reprimand.

"I don't..." Mami looks up at you, golden eyes wide and worried. "I don't want to go. I want to s-stay. With you. T-then later you can bring Sayaka to see K-Kyouko. Is- is that alright?"

"What about school?" you ask.

"It- it's fine," Mami says, shaking her head. "Just, it's just one day and I want..." Her shoulders slump. "I j-just want to spend time with y-you. And Miss K-Kazusa."

One moment she's just fine, the next she implodes. Did you somehow have a different reading of this? Like, literally, contextualize the telepathy, she does an emotional 180 in less than thirty seconds, guys.

Then we have this:

Akhem, cough, cough, yes, she is treating them like they're going to disappear afterwards, yes she is. (Caught this after I posted, sorry lol)

We should totally get Madoka to sing "Los! Los! Los!" :V :V

If only had it come out already...

I'm actually not finding songs from Aoi Yuuki before 2012. Well, some during 2011, but way after Madoka canon happens.

You know what, I think I've misread this. You're arguing that the Kyouko issue alone, without Kazumi, wouldn't have been so much of a problem.

The previous time we brought up Kyouko with Mami we noted the possibility of reconciliation. That caused Mami to rapidly improve. But the time before that...

"I'm gonna try," you say. "I said I would right?"

"Just a reminder!" Kirika says with a shrug and a sheepish little grin.

"Yeah, well." You don't glance up at the trees. You don't sense Homura anywhere nearby, but that means very little with her timestop. In all likelihood, she's probably burning Grief right now checking between Oriko, Madoka, and Sayaka. "Probably not for a couple of days yet, unfortunately, with the way thing with Sayaka went."

Kirika nods, smile dimming a little. "Thought so. I get it." She leans forward to stage-whisper to you. "Who's her oujo?"

Mami makes a strangled noise that's most definitely not a laugh. Because if that was a laugh, then the noise you made was a laugh and you're not laughing at Kirika, certainly not. Because that would be rude. So Mami wasn't laughing. Definitely.

"Welllll... you see, Kirika," you manage. "It's possible for two girls that are not an oujo and a... not-an-oujo to like each other."

"Scandalous!" Kirika says, straight-faced.

"Yeah, well," you say, shrugging. "Anyway, I had a thought - since I'd be doing shopping, do you want me to get you stuff for a date? You can do a candlelit dinner and stuff, if nothing else."

Kirika's grin returns full force. "I'd like that. Though, uh, get me a recipebook as well?"

"Yeah, I can do that," you say.

"Cool. Later, then!" Kirika says. "Later, Miss Tomoe!"

"Goodbye, Miss Kure," Mami says, nodding politely at Kirika.

"Later, Kirika," you say, waving with your free hand as the black haired girl turns and heads back into the house. You turn to Mami, meeting her eyes and smiling warmly. "Are you OK?"

Mami bites her lip, and nods.

You maintain your smile, gently pulling her over to the table that Oriko has in the garden. You eye the rosebushes, particularly the one you'd uprooted - apparently neither Kirika nor Oriko care enough to move it anywhere else, so there it remains to rot. You briefly consider covering the hole back up, at least.

Eh, maybe later.

You nudge two chairs side by side, sitting so that you can slide an arm around Mami's waist and pull her into a hug. "Alright. Give me a few minutes to check in on Hitomi and Sayaka, and we'll talk properly?"

She nestles against you, half turning so she can tuck her head against your shoulder. "Alright."

"Hitomi, are you alright? Get home safe?" you reach out with your mind. Telepathy is one thing Kyuubey's good for, you suppose. Though you have vague notions of figuring out your own telepathic relays so that you don't have the specter of the alien listening in on your private communication.

"Ah, yes, thank you, Sabrina," Hitomi responds. "I took a taxi, and I've reached home."

"That's good," you say. "Sorry, just checking in."

"I appreciate it," Hitomi responds, and pauses for a second. "Again, Sabrina, I apologise. I... overreacted."

You bite back a sigh. Some part of you isn't happy at all with her, still. You're not sure if you should have just... knuckled down. You do doormat a bit. But you can be the bigger person and forgive her, and you already have, anyway.

"It's fine," you say. "Anyway, talk to you later. I just wanted to do a quick check in."

"Mm. Goodnight, Sabrina," Hitomi says, ending the call.

You smile at Mami. "Hitomi's fine," you say. "And now for Sayaka..."

You could have called them both at once -even talking to them individually, it's not like you can't manage parallel conversations- but that feels disrespectful when you're doing this out of concern. "Hey, Sayaka?"

"Hmmm? Oh, Sabrina," Sayaka says. "Hey, uh, I ran into this red-haired magical girl, name of Sakura Kyouko. Says she knows you."

"Yeah, I know her, she's from Kasamino," you say, debating with yourself whether to tell her that you've asked Kyouko to train her.

"Right... she says you've asked her to train me?" Sayaka asks. There's an audible wince in her voice. "Uh, actually, she said she's been asked to train someone in Mitakihara and it's gotta be me?"

Which resolves your dilemma nicely.

"Yep. That's her," you agree. You turn to lean your cheek against the top of Mami's head. Reading between the lines, it sounds like Kyouko probably insulted Sayaka's skill. And then turned it around, into something like 'yeah, I see why you need training'. A wonder that didn't turn into a fight, really.

"... are you sur- one moment-" Sayaka says, breaking off midway. "Are you sure about this? She's kind of..."

"Rough?" you suggest. "She is. But she's also really good at the melee thing." The fact that she survived this long running on pure skill says a lot, you feel. Of course, you can't tell Sayaka that in so many words.

"Right," Sayaka says, sounding rather dubious. "Also hey, uh, about Yuma..."

"Not my story to tell, but take it from me - she's better off with Kyouko," you say.

"Uh... OK then," Sayaka says. "She called Sakura tsundere."

"Her new favourite word, I'm given to understand," you say gravely, tamping down hard on the giggles threatening to burst from your chest.

"I... see?" Sayaka says. "Uh, she's giving me funny looks. Later."

"Bye!" you say, and end the call. Looks like Sayaka's cooled off a bit - or at the very least, had her train of thought so thoroughly derailed she can't be angry any more. Which is good enough for you, and something of a surprise.

Mami makes a little noise, looking up at you.

"Sayaka's fine, too," you say with a warm smile. "Now, talk to me, Mami?"

Mami bites her lip, looking down. "I'm sorry," she whispers.

"Don't be. It's OK, Mami," you say, squeezing her around the waist. "Talk to me?"

"I-" she shakes her head, mask cracking. "Sabrina, I- you're just... putting so much effort-"

"Breathe," you encourage, smiling at her. "Breathe, slow down. You don't have to get it all out at once."

"It's- it's hard," Mami whispers. "I just- Kyouko is just- I fought with her and I, I- I might have killed her but I couldn't do it."

"That's a good thing," you whisper fiercely. You fumble for her free hand, lacing your fingers together and squeezing, trying to convey comfort and reassurance.

"I- I know," Mami says.

You pull her into a tight hug. Her head finds the crook of your neck, buried there like she's trying to hide from the world.

She doesn't need a speech right now.

You stay there. You let her shake, let her breathe. Let her regain her balance. It's an old pain and not one that you need to reopen right now. You want to reconcile her and Kyouko, but... not now. This is not the time.

It takes a few minutes before Mami pulls back a little. "I'm sorry," she whispers.

"Don't be," you say, tightening your hug.

"I..." Mami smiles at you, wobbly but sincere. "What's next?"

What is next?

This is roughly what has happened at each occasion in the past: Mami is a complete wreck for several minutes and then a partial wreck for a while afterwards, when Sabrina is there with her.

This may be coloring my perspective on how bad this is now. The prospect of reconciliation seemed to do a lot last time. It's possible that it will alleviate this stuff enough to be... Not ethical, but tolerable. Of course we won't know until it happens again when we don't do anything about it.

Something else to do: have Mami make some kind of "keeping in touch with friends" schedule/journal/log? Every weekend, plan out one a day call a friend and talk to them for a bit. Record, review thoughts, identify problematic thoughts and what caused them. When she's having trouble, look at the schedule for the next week to remind herself that her friends aren't vanishing. Also, having a schedule and a plan might help Mami get over the problem of just drifting away because it's too much work; same principal as doing dishes every day so they don't stack up and turn into a task that feels insurmountable.

Heh, beat me to it. Yes, I think that you're conflating "Kazumi is going to disappear" and "Disrupting school-related coping strategies" with "Kyouko problems", and overestimating the severity of the response to "Kyouko problems" because you're attributing the results of multiple issues in quick succession to that single cause. I think that Mami was off-balance from the Kyouko thing, which made her handle the Kazumi situation badly, which made her handle the school situation badly. Without Kazumi there I think she would've been a bit unseated by the Kyouko thing but would've recovered... not easily, and it would've taken a minute or two, but she'd have been able to return to class.

And yes, I think that reinforcing that Sayaka is getting along with Kyouko should be a way to help Mami out. Mami knows how JUSTICE MODE Sayaka can be; we should be able to help Mami realize that Sayaka wouldn't put up with any shit from Kyouko, and that if they're getting along Kyouko can't be acting up too badly, which should be an argument that she and Mami should be able to get along again.

I agree that things would be better if Sayaka can get Kyouko to tell her story. I also think that you're right that Yuma might get in the way of that; I don't know if Kyouko would want to subject Yuma to it.

I agree that things would be better if Sayaka can get Kyouko to tell her story. I also think that you're right that Yuma might get in the way of that; I don't know if Kyouko would want to subject Yuma to it.

Oh, I'm definitely right about that. The only counterargument to it is that she'll somehow decide to leave Yuma somewhere for a while. If you link to the following post and page back and forth you'll note that Kyouko drags us off to keep this stuff away from Yuma.

Anger surges across your mind for a moment, and you debate throwing something sharp and vicious in Kyouko's face.

"She doesn't say much," you bite out, twisting around to face her fully. "She doesn't even like to talk about it. I mean, I told you. She's in a bad place - she can barely manage two sentences about you before stopping."

You don't miss the pain that flashes across Kyouko's face before her expression twists, bitter and unpleasant. "Yeah, and? I'm waiting."

Your jaw tightens. Oh, you can see the regret and the deeply buried resentment and the pain hidden behind the lashing out. Here and now, though...

"That you were friends," you snap. "That you were her student. That you parted on very bad terms. That she regrets how things went."

Kyouko's head rocks back with a sharp inhale, as if slapped.

Here and now, the truth cuts deep.

"Yeah?" Kyouko manages, voice rougher than usual. "She tell you she drove me out?"

"No. No, she didn't," you say.

Because that's not what happened.

You could call her out on it.

"Yeah, well," Kyouko snaps, looking back over the river. "Hope that doesn't tarnish your relationship."

You pull your legs up with a sigh, shifting to sit cross-legged on the antenna spar, coat dangling over the back. "What does this have to do with anything?" you ask, rather than touch that particular problem.

"Got any family?" Kyouko asks, not looking at you.

"Search me," you respond, sighing again. "Amnesia, you know?"

Kyouko grunts, falling silent for a long moment. "Good f' you," she mutters. "More fucking trouble than it's worth."

"... what happened?" you ask, frowning.

She sighs. "My family is dead," she spits out. "And it's my fucking fault because I used my fucking magic to help-" Her mouth clicks shut, eyes widening in shock. Her throat works, as if she's trying to swallow something.

Jamming her hand roughly into her pocket, Kyouko produces that plastic bag and starts shoving food into her mouth, barely pausing to chew before swallowing in convulsive gulps.

Well, there it is.

You give her a minute, during which she empties out the bag. She tosses it aside to land somewhere with a wet splat, replacing it with a packet of what looks like taffy.

You sigh, thumping your head back against the metal framework of the antenna with a soft clang. "Frankly, I doubt that," you say.

"And what do you know?" Kyouko spits. "You've got all the fucking power in the world, don'tcha? Y' can do whatever you want."

"More power, more things to do with it," you counter, looking up at the sky. It's easier to evade the question when you're not looking directly at her. "More things that can go wrong. But I really, really doubt it," you say. "What happened?"

Kyouko makes an inarticulate, bitter noise, slamming a fist into the metal of the antenna mast with enough force to set the entire thing ringing. She's probably ruining reception for everyone in the hotel right now, to be honest. She collapses bonelessly a moment later, slumping against the steel.

"Y' ever wonder what people'd think 'bout you?" Kyouko mutters, sounding tired and defeated. "If they see how you've changed?"

You can't say you do. You... don't remember far back enough for that to be a concern, and you're striving to be the best person you can be, in the eyes of your friends. You're not perfect. Introspection is one thing, and you do always take care to try and consider how your actions affect the people you know, but...

Well, you can't honestly say yes to Kyouko's question.

Kyouko seems to take your silence as some sort of answer. Or maybe it doesn't really matter.

"'s fucking stupid," she mutters, fumbling in her pocket. Silently, she extracts a flimsy piece of paper from her pocket, practically throwing it at you - to no real avail. Paper is paper, after all.

You grab the fluttering paper, peeling it open carefully. It's a newspaper cutout, a tiny square clumsily torn from a larger sheet.

Article:
Sakura church to be demolished

Visitors to South Eastern Kasamino will soon be surprised by large changes to a local landmark.

Sakura Church has been purchased by Nakano Corporation for redevelopment.

The church, was once the site of the meteoric rise of Pastor Sakura's teachings, which lasted until an unknown schism dispelled his flock. A subsequent fire rendered the building unfit for human use, and the picturesque building has stood for over a year before its purchase.

The demolition is scheduled for July 2011, later this year, and...

Sorry for the short and late update. Been utterly exhausted this week.

You may also note Kyouko's spectacular reaction to being told what Mami feels about those events. I continue to hold that we should really continue to drop those sorts of things, because it will be highly effective as demonstrated. We don't need to meekly wait for Sayaka to sort things out automatically. We can help things along, easily.

I don't think you need to very concerned about making sure all the songs are in japanese. Japan kind has a thing for the west so I wouldn't be surprised if Karaoke bars had english songs as well as japanese.

If we spy one, we should have Mami and Kazumi sing a song about re-establishing friendships.

Unfortunately such songs are in short supply, at least in burgerland. Drowned in a flood of BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY ROCKIN' ERRYWHERE!

No-thought-given ideas for Hammertime usage
1) Triple wield (teeth)
2) Octuple wield (that 8-tails guy in Naruto)
3) Hundred-Wield (that Samurai guy from Soul Eater)(tldr he throws a pile of swords everywhere with enough density that there's always a sword close enough to grab whereever he goes (within an arena))
4) Swing the hammer and have the head detach.
:V
Song ideas:
Sabrina sings an orchestra.

Sabrina can change the albedo of her Mobile Oppression Fortress by strictly using grief mechanics instead of making it witchy. That same technique would allow a DVD player to read divots in a grief disk. We must abuse this to make a Grie-V-D of future songs. Like the Cake Song. Confusing people is easy, confusing people by hearing themselves sing a song they've never heard before... that is an artform.
